- Ever wondered how John Frusciante achieves his sound?
Well here at Future Sound Music in Preston we have trawled the net, looked at magazines, read interviews and have compiled what we think is a definitive list of his gear.
This is Part 1 in a three part series into John Frusciante's musical equipment. This video concentrates on his pedals and effects over the years. In part 2 we will look at his guitars and in part 3, his amplification.
We've tried our best, but may have missed some out. Tell us which effects you love, which you think you might buy and if we have missed any out.
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE to keep up to date with our videos.

I heard he joined a new band recently...
My feelings TRUMP your facts 🤣
I heard it’s sum new band called red hot chili peppers
@@guitarcohen2224 I have heard that they are from California
Yea they’re from New Mexico or something
Still praying for BSSM pt 2!!🤞
Really good. Would love to see one of these for Kevin Parker from Tame Impala
John is and has been a personal hero and I think guitar god.
The Fender Tube Reverb is a stand alone reverb unit, not a amplifier or head. It contains a tube driven spring reverb design from the 60's that could supplement guitar players that didn't have reverb built into their amps yet.
Thanks for the info. I'll do some digging and double check that. Cheers
Whenever I feel like I have too many pedals, I just watch a Frusciante rig rundown.
The optimal number of pedals to have is what you own +1
The fender reverb's not an amp head, it's a tube spring reverb
So nice to hear a voiceover that has a bit of personality without making me cringe.
Cheers man.
Future Sound Music Proud to be Manc 👍👍👍
Thanks for all of the positive feedback! We've got Part 3 of John Frusciante to do next then we are going to cover Omar Rodriguez Lopez. Let us know who you would like us to cover and we'll add it to our list. Cheers!
Ken Andrews ( Failure )
Mike Sullivan ( Russian Circles )
Ben Verellen ( Helms Alee )
Steve Von Till ( Neurosis )
I don't even have any pedals. This has now become my wishlist
Maybe I missed it during the video, but didn't John use a compressor pedal during the "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik" years? Probably the MXR Dyna Comp?
Hey! Tell us about Mike Kerr from Royal Blood! ;)
Huge list of stuff, wow! Great job with this. I would really more like to know how he used his equipment to achieve certain sounds. Like certain sounds for certain songs. Eg. On Scar Tissue, Californiacation, Under the Bridge, Can't Stop, etc.
absolutely need qotsa's josh homme rundown
I saw him play his first sho with the Peppers. Thats was a long time ago but a great moment.
JOEY HAVLISCH 1988?
John briefly used an MXR dyna comp on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, most notably Mellowship Slinky, but the pedal is not a major part of his overall sound.
I'd Love to see a gear rundown on David Gilmour.
well i prefer syd.
I would absolutely love one of these with Jon Schaffer from Iced Earth!!!
Do one for Omar Rodriegez Lopez
Here is our Omar Rodriguez-Lopez gear rundown. ruclips.net/video/NzISgB2FxyE/видео.html
He also used the green WH10 for a while. It is the same pedal with more volume.
Awesome video! I'm looking forward to part 2/3!
Can you do Matt Bellamy?
5:22 wahwahwahwahwahwaw i feel that bro, i feel that...
Bro….wtf did I just watch 😂 that list was longer than the list of 20 year olds DiCaprio has ran through the last 3 decades
his tone is the 62 strat, marshall silver jubilee, marshall major 200, ibanez wh10 and the boss ds2. the rest doesn't matter. good job man! love john too
there is a lot of truth and wisdom in this statement about john lol, i appreciated the video too tho =)
A Big Muff and the CE-1 are quite necessary
true
...and next John uses a KitchenAid toaster to get that burnt high tone...then he plugs in through a vintage Kenmore dishwasher with the settings always on 'Rinse Only'....
lel
where's John Frusciante??
-aaand JF is back! Wonder what he'll be using in the latest iteration of RHCP...
Nick DeMayo !!
Loved it. Plase make a video (or two) on David Gilmour's rig evolution
Please do a Jonny Greenwood one 😢
it's on my list :)
yaaaay
Kevin Parker from Tame impala please!
johnny marr would be a great vid
DOD fx65 pedal he used in blood sugar sex magic, due to his boss ce1 in shop been fixed
You can hear john use the Fuzz factory on his solo album Shadows Collide With People
Yup. I think he did mention about it in a magazine interview.
Wow! Good job dude. That's my favorite guitarist :D
You should do an overview of Johnny Greenwoods rig!
It's on the list :)
Mike McCready?
The Fender tube reverb isn't an "amp head." It's _just_ a tube driven reverb tank.
in one interwiew in guitar player, which was about stadium arcadium songs! he say " my job is create new sounds and tones " and that is what he does very well. with good imagination and whith good taste! and that has given me lot of good feelings and pleasure! to listen those songs! what´s wrong whit that? everybody knows, if you play with heavy distortion, bad player mistakes don´t sound so obvius! but john don´t use that in many places! ( sorry my english, because it´s not my own language ) just saing this because some ones accuse him bad player because he use lots of pedals! :D and how good he is as a songwriter! no one didn´t say anything about that!??
Marko Oikarainen Right! He's like a painter creating textures and ambiences with sound! If you listen carefully to stadium arcadium you'll hear he uses some effects for a fraction of a compas but it adds so much! He absolutely mastered the art of using pedals!
awesome great to know how a well accomplished musician creates his sound
Kevin Shields Gear Rundown would be great.
How about Adam Jones from Tool?
You forgot the Dyna Comp.
And suddenly i realize im too poor to sound just like john
Thanks for sharing! Subscribed
I have an Ibanez WF 10 that I was gonna throw out but then I found it's actually sought after because John used to play one. I'm selling it online so I hope I get a good price. Thanks John!
I just bought one from guitar center for like $140 :P
Sold it for US $120. Pretty good considering it was usable but faulty.
Diax1324 I’m thinking ab getting one do u recommend it
Please include Graham Coxon on your list too! :)
Josh Homme has very interesting sounds and is quite secretive about what he is using. Maybe he could be your next project? His fuzz tone is unique to say the least.
comp into octave pedal into Electro harmonix pog, play pentatonic solos without ever playing the 2nd/3rd note in the scale (its one of them cant remember off top of my head) add valve distortion and mix in delay to taste then you're done
Jack White?
He's a bit more generous with shots of his gear these days, but... John Mayer!!!
Johny Marr!
Thanks!
Hey dude, I just found you and I wanted to tell you, that your videos are awesome! Great explanations, very illustrative, great research! :)
Thanks!
Just say every pedal ever made

please do munaf rayani explosion in the sky
An Isaac Brock episode would be neat
Could you please make one for Sonic Youth?
www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/eq/gear.html
Here's an idea, just cover the entire stage with fx pedals, so anywhere you step, you have to change the sound. That might be fun, if you don't break your neck!
can you do tame impala
Michael Landau please...
Terrific video! Please make a video for Robert Buräs from Madrugada.
Conclusion : he uses everything ,; thanks !
Do Mike McCready of Pearl jam
Can you do it for Christopher wolstenholme ?
just curious to why you are asking about chris and not matt bellamy? no disrespect
Because i'm a bass player :)
Thank you for the video! I would like to ask you when did you purchase your MXR Micro Amp. I see difference of price with the 'new' second hand ones and the old second hand ones. Is there any difference in the performance of the pedal? Many thanks.
Great!
Cheers!
Can you do it for Wes Borland ?ì
We'll add him to the list.
FSM There´s a song performed by the RHCP (the Navarro age)... Love Rollercoaster. The guitar sounds pretty cool the first seconds... Is it a pedal effect?
It is recording animation where the track is panned back and forth rapidly.
Nice work !
Always heard of him using Phaser pedals and not Vibe ones. Wonder where they got that info.
HOLY SHIT!!! Great pick, watching commercial now and know this will be fucking amazing. Church of Frusch...
Artist suggestion: Omar Rodriegez
Here is our Omar Rodriguez-Lopez gear rundown. ruclips.net/video/NzISgB2FxyE/видео.html

5:34 in Holland we have René le Blanc, the Dutch Engelbert Humperdinck. check him out.
A gear rundown on Dimebag Darrell would have been awesome.
Great video. You can slow down a little if you like - there's a lot of info to take in.
How about David Gilmour and also the Joy Division rig? Vox guitars??
dimebag darrel rigs? can u please do that.
don't think a coffin is an instrument mate
Gear rundown for Tame Impala would be sick!
Yes!!!!!!
its not an amp head its a reverb unit
When/where does John use the Fuzz Factory?
SpieroMusic in his album "shadows collide with people"... in a magazine he said -he and josh uses that pedal for the solos (sorry for my english) :)
Can you do a video on ace frehley's or slash's gear rundown
The Edge?
You would need 2 hours.
Kevin parker!
So... Just buy all the pedals of the entire world... It's so easy to achieve Fursciante sound!
most of his overall sound are 6 things.
-ibanez wh10
-silver jubilee amp
-ce-1 chorus
-boss ds-2
-mxr micro amp
-Seymour Duncan california 50 pickups (SSL1s)
You really don't need every pedal unless you really have your heart set on playing every single part of every single chili peppers songs (or his solo stuff). You don't need every effect either to enjoy playing a song. In some songs like Dani California you can replace the modulation effects with the use of the Wah for example.
Also you don't need the CE-1 or a Marshall Silver jubilee. You can get a cheaper marshall amp that will have a similar identity to that of a silver jubilee, and you can get a cheaper chorus pedal and likely be content with that.
mxr micro amp isn't even really needed
@@Tman033 cant stop and other songs like scar tissue are far better with the mxr micro amp but i agree they arent entirely necessary, same as a bunch of pedals he uses
What about Omar Rodriguez Lopez?
