So glad to see you're all a little more satisfied with this attempt! We had great fun doing it, and the rig just sounded awesome! Apologies if we don't play your favourite songs note for note! As always they're worked out by ear before we shoot! Thank you all so much for watching and keep those requests coming! We will get round to ALL of them!
I think you guys did pretty awesome, cuz Josh Klinghoffer has like 3 enormous pedalboards just to emulate Frusciante's sound and get his own... You 2 have preety nice ears to get the riffs right and stuff
GigglingDickhead yep: there's a video of JOHN FRUSCIANTE showing how to play under the bridge (with no capo). I'm pretty sure he nailed it quite right :)
Im talking about the sound, cause no one sounds like him. I would say the closest they got was cant stop and not even that good lol and the ds2 doesnt sound close at all, they really didn't do much more than first video
You guys should of soooo got Dave Simpson in to guest on this one. He nails John with a Mexican Strat and a solid state Orange CR120. Could only dream of what he could do with no budget...
Yea definitely they should do me as well I study for John all you need is a DS-2 Ibanez WH-10 v1 or v2 or v3 and a Chorus Pedal and you don't need a Marshall try the stagg 10 ga amp that does the job your never gonna sound 100% like never but I'll never stop working on it
Thank you. It takes a lot to look back at what you have produced and not only acknowledge something is just not good, but to go ahead and do something about it. Can't be good at anything in this world without making mistakes and learning from them.
Preston Mesick hey man, thanks so much! It did bother us how much we missed the mark on our first attempt! I feel a lot happier with this attempt and I know matt does too! Thanks so much for your comment and support dude!
Matt Hornby that Slane concert is what made me go out and buy my first guitar. it was a truly spiritual performance from john. i was blown away. great job on the video though!
This BY busting the banks series is such an awesome idea. Really enjoy watching these videos, even though I'll never afford most of the gear! Keep it up!
Nailed it!! Nice work. I appreciate that you didn’t play everything note for note and learned this by ear. That’s music my friends. John Mayer himself said he doesn’t enjoy watching people play his songs exactly how he plays them. Use different string different parts of the fretboard different chord shapes. That’s music. Anyone complaining in contrary simply doesn’t get music. Well done lads 🙌
the problem is, 90% of frusciante's tone is from his hands. the total and utter emotion that man put into every single note is on another level. it's more than just pedals and amps.
I love these videos! Here's my requests for future episodes: Jonny Greenwood, David Pajo, PJ Harvey, Annie Clark of St. Vincent (definitely need more female guitarists in the mix and Annie Clark especially would be a fun one because she gets some incredible sounds), Nels Cline from Wilco, J. Mascis, Stephen Malkmus, Tom Verlaine, and Robert Fripp.
Simsom Guppington You can't even come close. Bea would have to spend at least a decade doing grueling, violent practice religiously. He would have to fast and stay in a freezer for 6 days in hopes it would summon Satan himself to give him a soul offer moments before he succumbs. He would have to buy a guitar crafted in hellfire by a one-eyed wizard living at the peak of mount Everest. These are just the first steps, there are over 20,000 to go before reaching level 2 of 5.
Simsom Guppington easy. Epiphone Les Paul Special II, Marshall 20 watt, Boss Overdrive and cut off 3 fingers on your left hand and 4 on your right. Only index and middle of your left and your thumb on the right. Who the fuck needs a pick when you are Lil Wayne.
Fuck yeah, he nails John's tone with that Orange Cr120 amp, he is a God! These guys sounds nothing like John, and they bought a Marshall Jubilee for fuck sake :O
William Allison He uses a Vox for his cleans. For the distorted tones he uses a Fender 85 combo, which a solid state amp. Thom Yorke and Ed O'Brien use a Vox AC30 for distorted tones, which sound sick!!!
To clarify, he doesn't get his distortion *from* the 85, he gets it from a Marshall Shredmaster, going into a clean 85 combo, but he only uses the two together, neither without the other
Thanks for revisiting. You guys did great this time around. The wah was missing the middle "fatness" to my ears but I'm being extra picky. The rest were absolutely bang on for me. Thanks again for taking the time to revisit this one!!!
@Balex Strand, I don't know about that, the lead tones in Free Me and Mouthful of Grass do seem to involve more than just plugging straight into a Marshall
Idk why they're even walking around thinking about which pedals to get, for Frusciante they should just get a potato sack and throw every pedal in it... makes the most sense to me
T Salty New Avenged Sevenfold sucks. The Rev era stuff is personally my favorite and I think a lot of people will agree that their best stuff was written then.
TheProgGuy thanks for your opinion. I still like Avenged Sevenfold, and many people would agree with me that they are still awesome. Your opinion doesn't change my desire for a vid, but I hope you feel better!
Great video guys!!! I'm a frusciante fan myself and i have both ds2 and the micro amp, the latter has saved my life a couple times on stage ahaha Thanks for the good work!!! Note: not capo for under the bridge, he does the D in a C shape with the finger bar.
This is much better, maybe try the ds2 on the second setting? Obviously Dave Simpson ( top guy) manages to get the Frusciante sound on many amps including a Marshall Jube so it's worth checking him out if you redo the on a budget version. Really great series of videos guys, well done!
Metallica = VH4 and Mesa Boogie Triaxis amps with an ESP or Gibson guitar loaded with Het Set pups for James, Randall 667 and Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier through ESP, Jackson or Gibson with EMG 81s for Kirk. If you want vintage tallica, then get a Mesa Boogie Mark IV and Mark IIC+. For Dream Theater, Mesa Boogie all day through a superstrat with high output passive pickups.
I know I'm really late to the party, but I'm getting back into RHCP and especially trying to cop Frusciante licks so this video is awesome. Love the choice of songs and I think you guys did a good job capturing his sound and licks. My favorite line is about wishing for the white pick guard, and acknowledging that this is sounds like not looks like. Brilliant!
I think this illustrates the difficulty in sounding like John F. His style of playing, his sound and his philosophy all seems to be about the space in between notes, the space in between sounds and tones. generally what's not being played seems more important to him and what makes him so incredible than what is being played. The relationship of what's not being played to what the rest of the band is playing and what the listener's imagination is filling in the blanks with is the key to him.
Much better :) you forgot the chorus, the new boss ce-2w is pretty close to the ce1 he used. holy grail, dynacomp, moog/mxr phaser helps too ... the most important thing is really the ds2 and the ibanez wha, any strat/tele and any amp that you can set to that slight break up will do the trick.
Well done guys! You got it so close with some of those tones. Couldn't help but leave a big comment on the previous one being a Frusciante fan haha Sounds great! Love these videos
@@caseynewton827 i read somewhere on a video of the performance that it was either dave navarro’s rig (he was using the same board) or it was just there for him to use at the venue, i can’t remember which for sure; but if you look closely and you know johns pedalboard from the mid 2000s you can see it’s not his just by looking at the pedals/layout. considering also that the wh10 along with the ds2 is the staple of his sound and has been since 1988, it’s unlikely he’d be without one if it was his board.
Kai Burns my mistake. Here's the revision: Fender Telecaster with a killswitch (MIM preferably) in drop D, Marshall JCM800 into a Peavy cab, Digitech Whammy, Dunlop Cry Baby Standard, some random EQ, Boss Digital Delay, and a custom power supply.
Another awesome vid and without commenting on how well it soulds like JF or not as I'm in no way qualified to do that.. :P One thing I can comment on is all the sounds like vids have the benefit of back and forth commentary, brainstorming about the gear etc and that is exactly what's missing from the David and Goliath vids. The best things about your crew and the amazing content you all provide for us are the personalities and fun around the gear and music. I forget in which one but Capt. Lee even says at one point how they don't want to do straight up how to or product evals but have to keep the fun and banter. The D&G vids need more of that so they are more like the rest.
Frusciante sounds comes from his hands 80% and the rest is the gear. His guitar tech said that. And watching both videos this makes sense. Even if you try busting the bank, doesn’t sound like him. Of course. With any strat you can get closer but that last step is just almost impossible. And both videos are missing the Chorus sound. He uses a lot. E the moog pedals too. But it was a good video and a good try!
Then his tech is wrong, because most of the tone doesn't come from your hands if it's being run through an electronic/valve power device. He can sound check and fine tune John's gear all he wants, and he will always know more about his kit than any of us, but that's traditionalist exaggerated bullcrap just like "playing 'till your fingers bleed". If you can get the tone bare from just the amp and guitar, and maybe the pedalboard, then his tone isn't 80% his hands. It's the gear.
So glad to see you're all a little more satisfied with this attempt!
We had great fun doing it, and the rig just sounded awesome!
Apologies if we don't play your favourite songs note for note! As always they're worked out by ear before we shoot!

I think you guys did pretty awesome, cuz Josh Klinghoffer has like 3 enormous pedalboards just to emulate Frusciante's sound and get his own... You 2 have preety nice ears to get the riffs right and stuff
Anyway, could you guys do U2, Guthrie Govan or My Chemical Romance? I know they're completely different bands, but still pokey to find their sounds...
could you plzzzz do sounds like slaves?
Rabea Massaad Absolutely nailed it guys. Now if we could just get a sounds like Tesseract or Karnivool 😉
Rabea Massaad sounds like Primus without busting the bank
Props for Bea wearing the same shirt as in the original Sound Like John Frusciante video!
ebbulk it was completely unintentional but it also really pleased me too hahaha
Rabea Massaad it also shows how much weight you've lost.Looking good bro!
Under the bridge is quite playable without a capo. I didnt even think to use a capo to play it tbh
My understanding is that he didn't play with capo. But would barre the first fret and play it.
correct, no capo used, just a some dexterity.
GigglingDickhead yep: there's a video of JOHN FRUSCIANTE showing how to play under the bridge (with no capo). I'm pretty sure he nailed it quite right :)
Nicholas Yamamoto Never. John himself teaches how to play it on RUclips.
Nicholas Yamamoto capo is for female lead singers

"nothing like" ... really?

Dave could play a tin can with piano wire strings and sound just like him. Dave is an amazing player for sure.
Dave Simpson is the man ! ..and I don't think he bust the bank either.

TimB4305 hell yea man have you watched his how to play like John frusciante series?
Vincent Johnson hell yeah man. I swear Dave does John as good as John himself.
TimB4305... Great shout. Bea may have the tech, but Dave's got the soul.
Damn right Tim, Dave is the dogs bollocks and he does it all on low priced gear.
What a difference - much better - well done.
Robin J Moffatt thank you sir!
Please do "Sound Like Dave Simpson by Busting the Bank".

Dave uses mostly inexpensive equipment so that wouldn't make sense
C shape in CAGED as a barre is not fun, BUT, that is how John plays it.
John has those S P I D E R F I N G E R S

Thanks so much for your comment and support dude!
Yeahhh! This one was great to do! So much fun and pleased you guys like it. Seriously, watch that Slane Castle DVD, it's really great :-)
Matt Hornby that Slane concert is what made me go out and buy my first guitar. it was a truly spiritual performance from john. i was blown away. great job on the video though!
You did great! Been listening to RHCP for many many years and I think you really wrapped up the essence of Frusciantes tone in this video :)
PCMESS That concert can inspire everyone, Flea's performance is still a big motivater for me, and Chad just drums like an absolute beast all the time
'Don't forget me' from that slane castle dvd is so good

Without Busting the Bank
- The Beatles
- Aerosmith

Andrew Pappas But The Beatles had so many sounds throughout their years so it's going to be difficult.

The intro solo for Californication at Slane was absolutely amazing, My uncle was at that show, so pissed!

well but i dont think tom is busting the bank by himself :D
Asker Annor He has some pretty wicked modified guitars tho

Rabea is one of my favorite guitar players. Gosh he is SOOOO good and fun to watch.
MUCH better job than the first one - really close sound and Bea improved a lot on his RHCP songs :)
Very fun episode, thank you both!
You guys need too get Dave Simpson on here.
And now they have
Just got out of an RHCP concert, I open up youtube, and I see this video. Great stuff guys!
Love Under the Bridge! It's one of those immediate flash back songs for me as a freshman in high school. Good times. Thx
the problem is, 90% of frusciante's tone is from his hands. the total and utter emotion that man put into every single note is on another level. it's more than just pedals and amps.
Under the bridge needs capo? What world do you live in?
ananasie1211 I was just thinking this lol
hahhaa lol
Under the bridge doesn’t use a capo, never has, never will. Look at any live performance of the song and none of them use a capo.
@@jfw1991 the boys are playing in the wrong key. Should be D ….still wish I could play as good as Rabea
so I will let him off lol
No capo is used he uses the caged system. C shape 2nd fret. Very hard to play

For Under the Bridge intro, the chord shapes are supposed to be D major in C shape, and F sharp major in E shape

Do sound like The Stone Roses
Or The Who
hmm do we have a mod here?
Done ✅
what about doing a sounds like deep purple, jeff beck, primus or free?
Yann E. I Totally agree on deep purple!
papa pusi DEEP PURPLE
Yann E. Free is just a les Paul through a marshall. Nothing special.
jeff beck would be so difficult, because most of his tone comes from his finger style and messing with the volume knob
@Balex Strand, I don't know about that, the lead tones in Free Me and Mouthful of Grass do seem to involve more than just plugging straight into a Marshall
Fot under the bridge its not using capo its using d chord in c shape
That’s how I play it
thats how john played it live at sloan castle too - no capo, just c shape
Ridho Wiranatakusumah also, John plays Can’t Stop with his thumb on all the bass notes and an open D (that’s me being nitpicky tho)
The open chords is him being lazy
Shut the fuck up.
Awesome! Been waiting for this video for so long, frusciante is my favourite player, you nailed it :)
Well done getting those Frusciante tones!
Please do Sound Like The Edge!
Simeon Waia Absolutely good suggestion

This human knows what's up. I can't choose if I want it to be based on Blue or Pinkerton though.

16:13 Huge relief. I was wondering when you'd get to a compressor for Under The Bridge. Nailed it. Thanks 👍
Rabea and Matt... the best ever.... this combination has never been bettered.
Can we get a sounds like Tool by busting the bank???
PLEASE do a "Sound like The Libertines" :D

Nice work and good playing! Using that Green Rhino was a neat trick.
Gotta love the Way Huge stuff. Always impressed with those.
