I think you did really well, especially getting the vibrato spot on! For what it's worth I had front row seats to see SRV at Hammersmith Odeon as it then was, and watched him right up close. People go on about the left hand and the string gauge, but what struck me was the way the right hand attacked the strings - he waved his picking hand all over the place but when he need it, he struck with the speed and power of a python. I'm convinced his tone had as much to do with the severity and accuracy of his picking, at least as much as anything else. Oh and another thing you don't see much on his videos - his eyes would roll back in his head!! He would closed his eyes while playing a solo, swing his head back as if in a trance, then open his eyes - NO EYEBALLS - that was some creepy shit!
I've seen it on a couple videos and it does indeed creep you out a little bit. I don't know if he went to some other place when that happened or what. But it certainly is wild to see
I have to admit (somewhat embarrassingly), I was only a teenager & I didn't really know who he was. My mate bugged me & bugged me to go so I relented (after copious 'herbal' encouragement). Stevie walked on stage & hit the intro to Voodoo Chile & my jaw hit the floor. His tone was so thick you could literally feel it assaulting your senses. Great night, never forgotten indeed!

You guys should combine Sounds Like With and Without Busting the bank by having one of you play the expensive rig and the other the cheap rig so people can hear a comparison.
Mostly the SRV tone is in how you attack the strings, but there are three really key things you can buy that will help; start with a Voodoo Labs' Sparkle Drive, which has a knob that lets you blend clean tone back into your distorted signal to simulate a clean/dirty multi amp rig. Next, you'll need a set of Texas Specials with solid-core cloth-covered wire. These are overwound and sound nothing like a stock sixties Strat's pickups. Thirdly, it doesn't much matter what Stratocaster you have, but you need to have it refretted with Dunlop 6105 or bigger; Stevie used Gibson bass frets, and the mass/energy transfer to the guitar's neck is substantially different from low, skinny vintage frets. The action should be just high enough so there's no fret buzz whatsoever. Next you'll need a Vox V847, NOT the V847A-but an original V846 will do, if you can find one. Then, a TC Electronic Stereo Chorus/Flanger splits the signal to two Fender Super Reverbs. (if you have a Sparkle Drive rather than a TS808, you can skip the second amp. The reissue is just OK, and you'll wanna tune down a half step and beat the speakers to death 'til they sound good and tired. Final tip: The gain knob on Stevie's tube Screamer was barely cracked; it's the level knob that he used to slap the amp's input stage silly.
@@samuelcarter8238 The 847A fixed the slight voltage drop, which I consider to be a feature, not a bug. The gain that's cut sounds more vocal this way. The Morley Bad Horsie is specifically voiced for high gain, and the Vox just isn't. If you use a V847A, you have to remember to dial back the volume a hair, every time you step on it.
Wow. Never thought I'd see an SRV episode. So glad you guys did this. Rabea, I'm from San Antonio. I hear SRV tribute artist's all the time. You should do a sounds like by getting the wrong gear. You buy the absolute opposite of the artist, then try to sound like the artist with the wrong gear. Maybe limit to only the correct pedals?
Nice job guys! Rabea you are so correct about the Squier Classic Vibe series, but I encourage you to check out the Squier Standard with 2 point trem, sealed tuners, quality saddles and sweet pups at an even lower price point.
Yeah, I'm with you on this.. The problem is nobody will sound like Stevie. However, you could get way closer for under 1500 pounds which comes out to a little over $1900 American Dollars. I went to Sweetwater.com, the pricing for a Mexican Standard Strat, Texas Special Pickups, TS9 Tubescreamer, Vox Wah Classic Reissue, and a Fender Hot Rod Deville 212 III comes out to about $1930...if you have an extra $20, buy some heavier gauge strings and put em on. That will get you much closer to his tone than this video. I'm honestly not sure how they ran out of budget so quickly with that Fender Squier...they could've done so much more.
Put some thicker strings (maybe 11's or 12's) and tune down to Eb would make a big difference. Second take an amp like that on the clean channel and crank the snot out of it. You need a non-master volume setup pushed pretty hard to get that magic going.
I think the youtube audio compression may have a part in making it sound thin. The only thing I would have done different is maybe used a fender bass amp instead.
Rabea is The Man. He plays all sorts of genres and plays them so well. Plus he’s entertaining to watch. I could watch him and Pete jam for days. Both so talented they make this videos so entertaining. I never heard of Andertons until I started watching those two guys. I bought a Boss Artist mkii because of both of those gentlemen. Play on gentlemen. Play on.
"He was renound for playing 13 gauge string with action that was massive. He was massively famous for his own version of little wing which was like massive." Lol! I reckon the number if times he said massive in one sentence left me massively rolling on the floor laughing.
Firstly I applaud you for even attempting Stevie Ray Vaughan, but for me this is the one that's probably furthest away from his sound. Admittedly I think the classic vibe 60's comes stock with a string gauge that 4 gauges lower, and as Bea rightly pointed out during the video the sustain just wasn't there from the guitar. For me I would have backed off the reverb slightly, and rolled off the tone very slightly to make it a little less trebly and slightly warmer. You would probably notice a huge difference even on the same settings had you been able to factor a bigger cab into the budget. But fair play for attempting it, and keep making the awesome vids!
For the Blues Deluxe, personally I like the drive sound from the clean channel turned up. Your sound engineer would hate you, but your ears would love it, lol. That was a lot of his sound- an amp turned all the way up, screaming it's guts out. Not surprised to hear that it was the Fender he used for his drive- when you push the hell out of one, you get THAT sound. (the downside, of course, is that you're measuring on the Richter scale, and rattling windows for miles. Totally worth it, though!)
Sounds pretty good to me. I'm probably the biggest SRV fan I know. He was an amazing artist influenced by Hendrix for sure. He did have the coolest sounding tone
I really enjoy these videos and truly respect the amount of talent and effort it takes to do them. I don't know if it was the amp settings or what, but it does seem like you were missing the bottom end that was a huge part of Stevie's sound, especially the pronounced 'clank' of the low E (actually E flat) string snapping against the fretboard that was such a huge part of his playing. All in all, though, good job!
You know what'd be really cool apart from this awesome series? A series in which you sound like guitarists with different gear than what they played, or what they're famous for. Hear you play what they'd play, but toned down, which is awesome. But doing the opposite on a budget, or not on a budget whatever you want would be cool. If anyone wants to see this, thumbs up so they can see it please.
As someone who plays through a Blues Deluxe rather often, don't judge it by it's cover. If you do some "slight" modding (replacing the Pre-Amp tube for one with a lower gain rating and exchanging the speaker for a higher quality one) you can get one hell of a great sound out of it :)
Lol dont think I've ever seen Rabea struggle that much. Should try some more SRV. Good to work outside our comfort zone and you already sound decent. Just need a little more grit.
For his dirty sound: -Telecaster with a bridge humbucker (maybe the current Modern Player Tele?) - Visual Sound Son of Hyde or that really cheap Joyo Hi-Gain, both based on the Marshall Shredmaster (hard to get your hands on one) - And, I shit you not, a solid state Fender. Not sure which one would be closer to his 85 model. His clean and/or modulated sound would be more tricky to get on a budget.
deffinetly wanna see a busting the bank on this one. the squire jus don't do it imo.. great playing as always. but damn stevie is a hard dude to copy or sound like.
We must not forget that one of s.r.v.'s guitars [the red one, I believe] had a left-handed neck...equipped with bass frets...in order to bring the action down a bit. Loved the video!
Honestly, I've watched a lot of people trying to play like Stevie ray, and the pride and joy intro was pretty far off, but the tone is much better than any other I've heard and the improvisation playing is so much closer than any other I've heard. No one can quite get the right tempo and in betweens right all while keeping all the other aspects of the style correct. I was very pleasantly surprised when I watched this
Just a heads up for any SRV/Hendrix fans out there. The Digitech Ventura Vibe is an awesome pedal and is 125 new US. You get great Univibe sounds for that Jimi stuff. It has a nice vibrato that also comes with most vibe pedals. To top it off, you get a very good Leslie simulator for that SRV Cold Shot sound. SRV actually used a Fender Vibratone which was a Leslie copy. A Leslie sound is also good for lots of late 60's stuff.
I have a Squier classic Vibe strat which is the best playing strat I've ever owned and I found a set of Original 94 Texas Specials online for $80. (Guy didn't know what Texas Specials were, don't know how) and put them in it and they have the Stevie sound through just about any amp. I love them
I think what this highlighted was with what is in effect a pretty basic set-up you can get the sound close but not the tone, that's all from the man himself, no criticism of Rabea implied here, he is such a great player. This for me just demonstrates of how good SRV was. Love these Sounds like videos they are tremendously interesting. My favourite was the Philip Sayce video when you guys nailed it to the wall!
Nice sounds. Trying to get close to Stevie is really difficult. He also had so much presence on stage it was awesome. I remember seeing him live in around 1988. Just absolutely fantastic.
Right, ok...That was a really solid effort. Watched it on release, many times after...really really solid...but... This really needs a Bank Busting!!! The SRV strat gets really close, and I'd love to see Bea play "Testify" note for note with some heavy strings (11's would do).
11:57 was the closest point of Stevie's tone I think. Great attempt and my hats off to you. Hard to approximate his tone since it was made up of so many little things melding into one HUGE thing. But this is very close for the budget. I would recommend something along the lines of -your Squier -fender blues junior -wampler tumnus -cs 69 pickups upgrade
1) guitar - yes Mex strats are the most available, best option for the $ and they are always listed on craigslist or abundant at used gear shops. But if you can get your hands on a 1980's MIJ Fender Strat at a good price, these are as good as any off the shelf standard USA Strats. 2) amps - I know the name sounds goofy and corny, but check out the "Stage Right" 15W amp from Monoprice. These are Chinese made and come w a celestion 75/80 speaker, reverb and an effects loop. They're only $200 but the circuit design is excellent and they sound a whole lot more like a $500-$700 amp. 3) pedals - Reissued Tube Screamers are the easiest option but make sure you get the right circuit. I would also highly recommend Brian Wampler's pedals - especially the Wampler Pinnacle Distortion. You can typically get one on ebay for under $200.
A commenter already suggested this, but I thought it was such a good idea that I would re comment myself on this idea. You guys should pick out a setup that is affordable price point wise and the other guy do a no budget spend as much approach for the same artist that you are trying to sound like. It would be more work for you guys, but having the back to back comparison would be so interesting and unique! Think about it for a future episode gents!!! Cheers from a big fan in Massachusetts, USA!!!
Valiant effort. I think a Blackface or Silverface Fender would've gotten a little closer but this was pretty good for the price point. Also, without actually being Stevie makes it tougher. Stevie would sound like Stevie no matter what gear.
There it is, all that glassy Strat clarity mixed with bite and a touch of dirt. Yet another guitarist where it comes down to the hands; the bends, the vibrato, the way you hit the strings. Nice job for someone who comes from a different area of playing. i'm just going to point otu one missing sound. That Univibe/Leslie tremolo sound SRV used on tunes like Cold Shot. Kinda one of his signature noises. i know it's a detail.
I tried my best, but damn this was harder than jimi to get the phrasing right
You still nailed it though man!

Would love to see a "BY Busting the Bank" video for SRV
Finally! :)
Hey Rabea, how long do you usually practise the songs for "... without busting the bank" videos? Always a pleasure!
We usually just learn the songs before we press record man. I usually listen to the track then work it out and give it a shot
+Rabea Massaad Hey rab.....I didn't think you'd do THIS good but you did good buddy. Im a transvestite but I dont like gays, incase you were wondering
+Bad Tranny what the fuck?
+Malcolm Boyd Wtf is your problem you racust !!!
I Heard some of the licks you explained to us in your 3 simple blues licks video. Cool!
Sounds like Paul kossoff
or low end gibson
Well they can't really go wrong...
we still wanna see it haha
As someone who plays through a Blues Deluxe rather often, don't judge it by it's cover. If you do some "slight" modding (replacing the Pre-Amp tube for one with a lower gain rating and exchanging the speaker for a higher quality one) you can get one hell of a great sound out of it :)
Fair play to Rabea for smashing out all these playing styles!
Well done fellas!
Waiting for a sounds like Alex Lifeson.
Lol dont think I've ever seen Rabea struggle that much. Should try some more SRV. Good to work outside our comfort zone and you already sound decent. Just need a little more grit.
If I could play as well as Rabea does when he’s “struggling” i’d take that any day of the week. He’s a beast.
Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead!
yesssss
For his dirty sound:
-Telecaster with a bridge humbucker (maybe the current Modern Player Tele?)
- Visual Sound Son of Hyde or that really cheap Joyo Hi-Gain, both based on the Marshall Shredmaster (hard to get your hands on one)
- And, I shit you not, a solid state Fender. Not sure which one would be closer to his 85 model.
His clean and/or modulated sound would be more tricky to get on a budget.
it'll have to be the squier tele deluxe, cos it has killswitch
***** Ah! Good call!
Great call. Love to hear them try Subterranean Homesick Alien.
Classic vibe saves the day again!
You said it......his playing was unique.....no one I've ever heard can cop his vibe......miss him......
Sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd or Free!
I thought it said sound like Lynyrd Skynrd FOR free,I was like I would like to see someone pull that off;)
deffinetly wanna see a busting the bank on this one. the squire jus don't do it imo.. great playing as always. but damn stevie is a hard dude to copy or sound like.
Sound like Gary Clark Jr please!
Epiphone Casino through a 59 Bassman with a fuzz pedal turned all the way up. Done.
Why?
Rabea is such a versatile player, amazing sound
We must not forget that one of s.r.v.'s guitars [the red one, I believe] had a left-handed neck...equipped with bass frets...in order to bring the action down a bit. Loved the video!
Great playing, Rabea! Sound like Alex Lifeson.
Why haven't they done this yet?
Short Tom Hopefully they're saving the best for later.
let's hope
shame really as he was trying to sound like srv!
Yes! We need sound like Alex Lifeson!
Don't forget, SRV played heavy strings, tuned down one half step.
Pls do a sounds like the Smashing Pumpkins. Both Billy and James. Also sounds like John5 would be cool.
Do Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton or The Beatles
sound like john frusciante by busting the bank
Yes!!
I think everybody wants that at this point
I belive they have already done that one.
Lexcoaster no only the without busting the bank one
I'm fairly certain they've already done that
PJ!! McCready!! Gossard!! fuck it... throw Eddie Ved in there too!! Rearviewmirror.. 3 guitar assault!!! Please ;)
Totally!! Yellow Ledbetter tone and even flow would be rad
Daveyboy you sound like a petty moron.
I have a Squier classic Vibe strat which is the best playing strat I've ever owned and I found a set of Original 94 Texas Specials online for $80. (Guy didn't know what Texas Specials were, don't know how) and put them in it and they have the Stevie sound through just about any amp. I love them
Rabea's playing is phenomenal! It sounds amazingly close!
Sound like Alex Lifeson's 2112 tone! Love his tones in the overture
Could you guys do a sounds like Rory Gallagher episode? He's an underrated guitar legend!
Sounds like Boston!
Sound like Buckethead pls pls pls pls pls pls
that would be great!
Get a chicken shack go sit in it and record your solos. .......ANYBODY know THIS buckethead reference ?
Thanks for posting the amp settings!
this is so pleasing to watch actually :D
Next up: Sounds like KYUSS?
Stevie will be rocking on the other side!
Excellent Lads!
Right, ok...That was a really solid effort. Watched it on release, many times after...really really solid...but...
This really needs a Bank Busting!!!
The SRV strat gets really close, and I'd love to see Bea play "Testify" note for note with some heavy strings (11's would do).
please do sounds like Alex Lifeson/Rush
JERRY CANTRELL AND/OR PETE LOEFFLER
Sound like CHON 😁
YYYEEESSS!!!
Chon... (G)?
Yee homie
11:57 was the closest point of Stevie's tone I think. Great attempt and my hats off to you. Hard to approximate his tone since it was made up of so many little things melding into one HUGE thing. But this is very close for the budget.
I would recommend something along the lines of
-your Squier
-fender blues junior
-wampler tumnus
-cs 69 pickups upgrade
You can typically get one on ebay for under $200.
sound like Dinasour jr. PLEASSSSEEEE
That would be amazing! Love the fuzz J gets!
+Michael Osztertag Yeah Man! his tone is top notch
obviously they have to get the J Mascis Signature Squier Jazzmaster
***** Aha ya, and 300 fuzz pedals!
Shidonlad's V&G gotta apply tax as well. So that might go over budget by a bit.
FINALLY, DO ALICE INCHAINS NEXT
Sounds like the Velvet Underground
hell yeah!
Wish you guys put the amp settings all the time! And maybe if you change picks, that also makes a big difference IMO.
Cheers from a big fan in Massachusetts, USA!!!
sound like Billy Gibbons.
How about a ZZ top or maybe billie gibbons?
Don Felder and Joe Walsh would be perfect for both of you to do.
One of the best Sound like videos, nailed it......Pleasure to watch and listen to
3 years late but that telephone song section was absolutely killer - great work gents.
Sounds like Synyster Gates from A7X!!
do ERIC JOHNSON
Sweeps Alvarado impossible
Jus Oborn from Electric Wizard!
