I was skeptical about Bob-omb because unlike the rest of the cast, him being generic actually worked in the character’s favor (in a vacuum). But you made the design more interesting without sacrificing the fact that he is a mass produced sacrificial lamb.
Holy shit where has this video been all my life your designs are EXACTLY what I think should be a given about Paper Mario. It made me seethe at the IP Team even more after seeing what this game's NPCs could have been just by visually taking full advantage of their existing roles.
I love all of these designs! Bob-omb's is simple but cool! It really conveys that he's been through an accident. However, the irony of making Bob-omb (or Bobby, as Olivia called him) look unique is that in PMtOK, Bob-ombs _aren't_ unique. This is actually a plotpoint for after Bobby dies (spoilers, but people need to know this). Bowser's Bob-ombs are all mass-produced to sacrifice themselves for Bowser and share the same philosophy: life is short, so make the most of the time you have by leaving a big impact. While Bobby was nothing more than a typical Bob-omb, what made him unique (besides the amnesia) was the experiences he shared with Mario and Olivia, the impact he made on their lives, and his inevitable heartbreaking self-sacrifice. So when Olivia meets another generic Bob-omb some time after Bobby's death, she briefly mistakes it for Bobby, only to be told that he is not the same Bob-omb. However, Olivia decides not to think too hard about it, and calls him and the other Bob-ombs "Bobby" anyway, stating she is glad to see him. 😭 ...This is right before a shooting segment where you get to fire endless amounts of Bob-ombs out of a cannon, all of whom are happy to leave a "big impact" on Bowser's enemies. Truly, dark comedy at its finest. ...Huh? Oh, right. All the other designs in this video are bangers!
Well in that case, he coulda added a crack or some signifier that Bobby survived a non-explosive altercation that caused his amnesia. Maybe even have a slight gradient to a coal black, to signify that hes lived far past his due date.
It’s nice to see them try and work the stupid restrictions into the story like this, it at least gives it SOME upside… but of course it would just be way better if we could get unique designs again
Hey, I really appreciate the sentiment behind this video. The biggest downgrade for the series for me has been how completely bland and uninteresting the characters have become. TOK would be massively elevated had it used designs like this. As an aside, your art is pretty good! Do you take commissions by chance?
Here's my ideas on how to improve the bosses. Colored Pencils: The colored pencils being an artist is really obvious, but I did like him firing off his pencils like missiles so I'm going full into this. My Colored Pencils will be a military commander. He's also Pencil Pouch now, uses the zipper like a mouth, and the actual pencils are like his soldiers. He is also camo-print. Rubber Band: Completely fine. The rubber band man is a fun idea, and being a theater guy is unexpected. Hole Punch: Not really sure what to do here. You could just bedazzle him, but I think something special need to be done for the guy who decapitated a large crowd, stole the sun, and used that to make a dance party in an ancient temple for his king Scissors: I legitimately can't tell Scissors's gimmick, whether it's mad scientist, samurai, or just edgewood best. Mad scientist speaks more to me, so I want that. He fills Bowser's castle with green goo tubes, electrifies himself as a tell before Final Cut, and makes more Paper Mistakes. Maybe invented the Paper Machos? And of course he talks like a mad scientist as well. Tape: Put hot rod flames and smoke-spewing exhaust pipes on the dispenser. Make the tape cutter in the second phase look more like brass knuckles. Maybe the tape shouldn't be clear. Stapler: Make Stapler not a mystery, and instead, show it as Olly's tiny lapdog the whole game, and grows to full size when used to staple Folded Soldiers or fight. Make it aubily whimper when Mario breaks its jaw, too.
I also once made up my own designs, for some reason I made tape have a tiny orb in his center with spider legs on it, and I based scissors off of those pairs that have differently shaped blades so that they can cut paper in different shapes (which would look way more anxiety inducing if Mario was cut by it) Also the idea of Stapler slowly growing up is amazing.
i honestly miss when the story wasn't *about* arts and crafts, and it was instead just a fun whimsical story with an arts and crafts artstyle. just get rid of the stupid stationary themed bosses entirely and make up some evil characters.

I'll chalk to up to just "the game itself not having the most interesting characters" and the sudden personality that all these designs have is almost blinding, but I feel like some of them could be pared down to better fit the game's style.

This is one of the reasons why I don’t want to play these games anymore. I loved how the Npc’s felt like they had their own personalities and weren’t all paper copy’s.
Thanks! The funny thing is, I thought I hated the new art style until I started making this video... then I realized, I don't have a problem with flat colours and white outlines. It's just that boring and repetitive designs are... well, boring and repetitive!
@@TheHarryGoldShow Yeah, the boring designs are the worst part. I do dislike the white outlines though, makes everything feel even more artificial and lifeless. Same with the obsession on making literally everything paper craft. That is how I feel anyway.
I didn’t play far enough to meet Bob-omb… but - “One in a million” means you’re unique from the other 999,999 From Google: “"One in a million" is an informal idiom that means something or someone is very unusual, special, or admired”
6:41 it buttons up in the back so that you can still get a snug fit under the shell but you dont have to try and wrangle it like you would a fitted sheet. the bottom is hemmed so it doesnt flap open and looks clean
I find "Hospital Bob-omb" a little bit wierd and kinda ouf ot place... I mean, A SINGLE little bandage could have work better, Here it looks like he almost died... Also Hospital dosent seems to exist in Mario so, that kinda weird too..... .
I feel like with the whole "we can never make merch of spin-off characters" thing, that's discouraged any creativity with the characters in spin-offs as of late. I'd think that there'd be more creativity if only Miyamoto didn't have a stick up his ass about it
Seriously, Screw the stupid rule that toads cannot be unique, the lack of XP, lack of useful partners, breakable badges, lack of interesting new characters and generic bosses!
The reason why the newer characters are generic is because the creator of Mario said that the characters don’t matter, so they kind of can’t make them imaginative creativity is too expensive
My thoughts: *1) Bob-Omb* While I do think the new design is cool, Bobby does not need a new design. He's SUPPOSED to just another Bob-omb. There's nothing special about him and that's the point. And yeah you can not like that, but you'd have to completely change his character arc, story, and personality to actually change it in a major way like this. I will also say that the amount of details the new design are distracting and make him feel Cluttered. I believe there are a few too many details. Why does he need bandages AND an eye-patch AND a key-patch on his already very altered key? If I were to go with this design I would just give him bandages around his head. Maybe a cracked key, and perhaps change his color scheme ever so slightly so that he's more bluer and has yellow shoes or something. *2) Chef Toad* Once again this feels very overdesigned imo. I am a big fan of his expression and facial hair though. The toasted cap idea is cool, but instead of giving it such harsh colors, I would either change the brown spots to white, or just give him a normal cap that gets darker and more orange near the top. This is a good example of how altering designs works well for NPCs with not much plot relevance. Partners are a bit harder to justify imo because they have very specific stories and personalities built into their character. *3) Museum Curatrix* This one is pretty good, actually. I'd still change a lot. Maybe make the earrings larger, simplify her boots, and maybe even remove the ponytail, or replace her hair with a mushroom bun. As cool as the art-themed Toad cap is, I'm not sure if it would actually feel right in game? Everything else is great though. This one is definitely my favorite redesign so far. And for anyone reading, a lot of this is personal preference! If you like characters with loads of features, that's totally fine. This is just my opinion and I'm actually not too big of a fan on some of thr more intricate designs in TTYD. PM64 is perfect though. *4) Shy Gal* Actually there is a female shy guy in Mario Party Advance! This design is very funny. I think the detailed mask works here because it's supposed to be tacky. I'd remove the upper eyelashes personally (or shrink them). And I would shrink those shoes too. Less exaggerated pose as well, although the idea of the is good. Color scheme is fine, but I feel like it could be a bit better. Not sure how I feel about Shy Guys having hair as we don't even know what a Shy Guy is. But otherwise this is cool! I think maybe she should have an obnoxiously large purse to hold accessories in, as she DOES sell accessories. *5)* The TTYD Koopa Troopa design sucks. The modern one is good but not perfect. PM64's design is peak. I hate the TTYD one though. Anyway, besides that this is good. We've seen other Koopas in cloaks, and their shell was hidden. So I think it should be hidden here too. At the very least the tail should be hidden. The skin color is fine, but I think it would work better if it was more blue and less green, like Kuzzle in BIS. And them give them a darker shell to match. If all the Koopa Cultists were different colors, that would almost be even better. I don't think this dramatic cloak idea works very well for the way the worshippers are portrayed in game. But otherwise there's not really anything wrong with design and I think it looks cool. *6) Monty Mole Grifter* I've seen this idea elsewhere. Not sure if they stole the design from this video but thr idea was basically exactly the same. But I heavily disagree with giving this guy a unique design at all. If anything I think he should have a darker fur color and some shifty sunglasses. He acts a lot more like an auctioneer than a bootlegger.. He even says he just found it on the street after he sells it. He's definitely not this shifty drug dealer some people seem to think he should be. He's just a funny guy. *7) Lab Broodal* The idea of using other species is ALWAYS a welcome one. I wouldn't use a broodal personally, as we've never seen a generic member of the species, but hey, it could work. I just think he looks too much like Topper here. It's also Toad Town, so I think it would be cool if he bought the building and turned it into a lab. Might be cool if instead of wrestling gear, he wears VR equipment, since the dojo battles are high-tec and simulated, rather than being real. *8) Bonnetor Trian conductor* I have no issue with this one other than the body color. This is a fun idea that works well. Overall there were actually some decent ideas here. I think a lot of people misunderstand how Mario's world works, and try to change it in a way that they think is better. The way modern Paper Mario is handled is not ideal at all, and the lack of interesting designs is definitely a part of that problem. The lack of varied friendly species in general is a big problem that for whatever reason, only Paper Mario seems to have a problem with. Fan designs usually lean into oberdesigned, as I've said before. And I think some of these definitely were overdesigned. But there were genuinely fun ideas that I think could really work if developed and refined a bit more.
If the video creator is reading this. I don't mean to offend you at all! I'm just very passionate about the series and I really want it to be better. Despite my issues with some of the designs, I thought you did a great job capturing the style of Paper Mario, and a lot of these ideas made me smile!
Why does Nintendo not hire Harry Gold he made these look exactly like how Nintendo would have done that if they had any origanality left in their offices
1:54 i know said this before but i wasn't very clear back than now i don't hate the redesign i actually quite i like it the thing is it's that it's not consistent with how hes accident happen he didn't fell from the sky he landed in the water after he got knock off the ship
Wow these designs are amazing and if you have to make sure the Characters can't look original I would give Bobby some cracks on his body to show that he's not that sturdy as the other Bomb-ombs in the previous Paper Mario games showing that he can't explode repeatedly.
That is a pretty epic design of the Monty Mole auctioneer in Overlook Mountain. I always found that Monty Mole to be a sympathetic and sad character since all he wanted to do is to pay his rent, so it would have been more interesting if his design made him look more poor. But other then that, I love the design and it is great to have this deep Monty Mole character not just look like a generic Monty Mole. Also, why did you call him the Monty Mole Grifter? I am just curious since I saw literally nobody else call him that.
@@TheHarryGoldShow Oh ok, thats fair, I just was extremely surprised since I saw nobody call the Monty Mole by that name. The song name for that section is called "Monty Mole Shop" so it seems like Nintendo never gave that Monty Mole a name. Also, sadly he doesn’t appear in the Super Mario-kun adaptation, since they skip over that entire section in the Origami King arc. I still find it weird how you treated the Monty Mole like some shady dude that scams people, when I thought he was meant to be a sad broke character who is trying to pay his rent so he doesn’t go to a poor house (he literally says he will go to a poor house if the Koopa Troopas buy the shell stone instead). Also fun fact, a Monty Mole in Breezy Tunnel heavily implies that the Monty Mole auctioneer is his older brother, as that Monty Mole says that his older brother moved to the surface and had to sell trinkets on the side of the road, and the Monty Mole auctioneer (or grifter whatever you want to call him) does say that he found the shell stone on the side of the road. Also, what appears to be the same Monty Mole also appears in a photo seen during the end credits. I was wondering what you think of this extra lore since I am extremely knowledgeable on the Monty Mole species (even stuff from other media like the books and manga)?
0:44 I think both Sonic 06, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric , Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Ice Age: Collision Course, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, Terminator: Dark Fate , Pokemon Sword & Shield and The Last of Us Part II should be on this part because these things are bad and they're not very good.
@@off-the-grounder568 (I came to see your comment and your right but I’m sadly known to have problems to tell the difference between jokes or not (mostly if it’s misinformation))
I'm gonna post a huge hot take here but the more I think about it I actually really dislike the idea of TOK having unique character designs. I know that sounds weird but hold on and listen to me. The reason why I don't like this because if you think about it if all the NPCs have unique designs it would go against the story their trying to tell. Because the story & theme of TOK is that all the characters are characters even if they are just generic enemies. (like for an example Bobby's backstory) Since PM fans seem to be so obsessed with character design, I feel like we are forgetting an important rule about character design. That rule being the design has to match the personality & story of the character. for a good example of how this could be done wrong look at Nyx from the Fire Emblem series. Her back story is that she was cursed and is unable to age because she is stuck as a child but when you look at her design she looks more like a teenager & nothing about her design reflects that. And on the opposite side look at what Sugar Punch said in his video on Melty Blood is that even though the characters designs are bland that ok, because the whole theme of the series is that you should expect the unexpected & the supernatural lives with the normal.
@Ueki to be honest, not really. So many people draw women in the sense of "butt and boobs first, everything else later" to always make the message like women are only notable for their genitals, nothing else.
*Bobby Spoilers* Bobby is what I'd call a good character (with a bad name and design)... but a really crappy partner. He had personality, an arc, and witty dialogue... but his name (realistically, his name is Bob-Omb) and design is downright lazy to an inexcusable degree (I get that his name, and copy/paste character type plays a role, but it shouldn't need to, because it's just an excuse for the laziness. Stop making excuses for these design choices.). As a partner... he's useless. You can't choose what he does in battle, he TRIPS half of the time, has only ONE move, he leaves you soon after completing the chapter you meet him in, he cannot be used to solve puzzles or find secrets in the overworld (because of a stupid plot-based retcon of past entries), and is mainly used as insurance for that one enemy you failed to line up. This partner system is not only pointless because of the way battling works, but is also really annoying to look at when compared to how it worked in the first 2-3 games. I'm already one-shotting just about all of the enemies because of how flawed the battle mechanics are, so what's the point of the partners? They're just there for dialogue, progression, and plot importance. Nothing more, nothing less.
The whole game felt pointless in pretty much every aspect IMO. The retcon really annoys me, but to top it off they go and make a parody of longtime fans who dislike how they made everything into Toads by representing them as Olly in game.
"We have complete control over the creative direction of the series." Then use your "creativity" to make unique characters. "We took away a Bob-Omb's fuse. That's unique." ... "We gave a Toad a hat." Get out.
@@hazelkinoko4779 It's very frustrating. Bobby was extremely annoying to me. He felt like cheap emotional manipulation to me, especially because I've played the classic games. I think his whole purpose was to be a retcon so they can yet again distance themselves from the classic games. When it comes to Paper Mario Tanabe doesn't seem to know how to make a character memorable without having them die.
@Cerebrum @Kidd P Hazel (More Origami King Spoilers, if it even needs to be said!) That's a good point! Even aside from Bobby - whose death not only makes no sense in the context of the older games, but is also undermined by the low-stakes situation in which he sacrifices himself AND the whole platoon of bob-ombs you sacrifice without batting an eyelid later in the game - they pulled the same your-sidekick-sacrifices-themself-at-the-end routine for the FOURTH Paper Mario in a row!

I don't understand why Nintendo would want every toad to look the same. Isn't the whole point of an iconic design is how much you can change it?
Unfortunately, the higher ups are idiots so they probably won’t think that.

great designs hope this gets some exposure

I thought origami king was really good and I almost cried when bob-om died (I like to call him Bobby because that's what Olivia calls him)
I find "Hospital Bob-omb" a little bit wierd and kinda ouf ot place... I mean, A SINGLE little bandage could have work better, Here it looks like he almost died... Also Hospital dosent seems to exist in Mario so, that kinda weird too..... .
Imagine a pmok mod with these kinds of designs
Good lord it’s criminal that you’re not more known, I’m not first nor the last person who will say this.
they aren't allowed to make more interesting toads. there's literally a mandate...
Hey hey hey, Bobby carried, ok 🤨👍
And because of all these boring designs Nintendo now has to realse 2 old Mario rpg games to actually make money from them now.
Nitendo HIER THIS MAN
The reason why the newer characters are generic is because the creator of Mario said that the characters don’t matter, so they kind of can’t make them imaginative creativity is too expensive
My favorite one is the shy gal
And you already know why.
Love these! Can you design more mario characters?
My thoughts:
*1) Bob-Omb*
While I do think the new design is cool, Bobby does not need a new design.
*2) Chef Toad*
Once again this feels very overdesigned imo.
*3) Museum Curatrix*
This one is pretty good, actually.
*4) Shy Gal*
Actually there is a female shy guy in Mario Party Advance!
*6) Monty Mole Grifter*
I've seen this idea elsewhere.
*7) Lab Broodal*
The idea of using other species is ALWAYS a welcome one.
*8) Bonnetor Trian conductor*
I have no issue with this one other than the body color.
*OOOH OOOH! it's STEPHEN KING!!*
Actually his name is bobby
no, it's literally just bob-omb, bobby is just a nickname

Thank you so much
Why does Nintendo not hire Harry Gold he made these look exactly like how Nintendo would have done that if they had any origanality left in their offices
Arlo's gotta see this.
Unless he already has?
So far as I know, he has not! I'd certainly be pleased if he did.
oh my god i have to know how you make these

1:54 i know said this before but i wasn't very clear back than now i don't hate the redesign i actually quite i like it the thing is it's that it's not consistent with how hes accident happen he didn't fell from the sky he landed in the water after he got knock off the ship
Late to the party but binge-watching
Someone should mod these ingame
Turnbuckle is an apt comparison, and a good name for that character.
5:48 was that... a rarity reference?
Ah yes, my favorite partner: *Arlo*
i mean they already have a shygirl
lets just say she's in a orange youtube
I had to call him something, and Lord knows Nintendo wasn't going to give him a name!
I was wondering what you think of this extra lore since I am extremely knowledgeable on the Monty Mole species (even stuff from other media like the books and manga)?
that's definitely stephen king
i guess the redesigns are not as Bad as i thounght they were
At first I thought Larry King but it's Stephen King, I'm too late though lol
Ah, Mr Horror himself Stephen King
0:44 I think both Sonic 06, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric
, Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Ice Age: Collision Course, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, Terminator: Dark Fate
, Pokemon Sword & Shield and The Last of Us Part II should be on this part because these things are bad and they're not very good.
Bomb-omb’s name is actually Bobby
Another excellent video, I hope Nintendo dont block this video for showing their shortcomings, it is RUclips after all.
seriously what program do you use to create these silky smooth ass art i need to know
Just good ol' Photoshop, my friend!

hes name is bobby for short and hes missing fuse is imporntent to the story dude
Very epic
Can use this video idea?
Yes
I’m not a fan of your content besides this vid, but
HOW DO YOU NOT HAVE MORE SUBS!?!?!?!
Alas, I suspect you may have hit on the answer to your own question...
How did you get the sprites
I got the original sprites from The Spriters Resource, and then I had to rebuild them in Photoshop!
@@TheHarryGoldShow And how you can get them?
@@Flely The Spriters Resource is a website, you can download the spritsheets from there.
NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN!
Stephen king!!!
thank you for not overly sexualizing the women you drew, seriously!
It's a toad
@Ueki to be honest, not really. So many people draw women in the sense of "butt and boobs first, everything else later" to always make the message like women are only notable for their genitals, nothing else.
Bro did not understand that bobby is supposed to look generic
These are Great!
*Bobby Spoilers*
Bobby is what I'd call a good character (with a bad name and design)... but a really crappy partner.
"We have complete control over the creative direction of the series."
Then use your "creativity" to make unique characters.
"We took away a Bob-Omb's fuse. That's unique."
...
"We gave a Toad a hat."
Get out.
@Cerebrum @Kidd P Hazel (More Origami King Spoilers, if it even needs to be said!)
That's a good point!
@@TheHarryGoldShow Yup, and yet people are praising the writing, and especially "Bobby". It is mind boggling to me.
