  • Are you a staunch supporter of tipping as a way to reward excellent service or a critic advocating for fair wages? Hey, it’s Dan Zimmerman and welcome back to Illustrate to Educate. In this video I’ve compiled five arguments both for and against tipping, exploring the complexities and nuances surrounding this age-old practice.
    Pro/Support Tipping -
1- great incentive for quality service.
2- opportunity to make more money than an hourly wage.
3- deeply ingrained in various cultures, and it is seen as a social norm.
4- allows customers to have control of rewarding good service
5- essential practice for small businesses
    Con/Against Tipping -
    1- inequality and unpredictability
2- tipping norms vary globally, leading to confusion for both customers and workers.
3- paying their employees should be solely the employer’s responsibility
4- can be subjective and influenced by unconscious biases,
5- illusion of lower prices for goods or services
What are your thoughts about tipping? If you enjoyed this video, be sure to like, comment, and subscribe to Illustrate to Educate to support more simple and objective videos on topics that matter.

I imagine we can draw a line where tipping on small to medium size businesses allow tipping and not in corporate owned businesses (business in the stock market).
The ability of stock market businesses, with the ability to scale, to pay their people is greater than mom and pops stores...

I have always said tipping should always be allowed and encouraged, but companies that make a level of profit should be made to pay at least a minimum wage hourly.

I believe that tipping should be giving based on merit and not expected. I think in the US is expected to give tips and get a bad service in some cases. In some countries in Europe they dont tip becuase is already taking into consideration (VAT) and service so if you se in the menu a meal cost you $10 yoy pay that price no more not less.

Tipping is ALWAYS optional. Tip was originally an acronym for "To insure prompt service" and was a reward for extraordinary service. Servers are not entitled to extra money just for existing. If they do not offer extraordinary service they should get no tips. Full stop
Any shortcommings in the wages servers are paid, should be discussed between the server and their employer. It is not the public's responsibility to subsidize them. We're broke too.

Tipping is always optional, in my country by law you already pay 13% tip included in the price, thats the way to do it

I don't know Dan. Both sides bring up good points. The employees that are super nice should get a tip. I can say that.

Good point! There’s definitely instances where people do deserve tips like you mentioned. I just wonder where the line is sometimes for some companies that really don’t do much and expect a tip.

Why have any debates about this? Tips are given out of kindness and imo has no business being made into a political topic.

How did this make it political? There are always two sides.
