At the top of the food chain is the “Zamindar” or landowner. Usually this person is also the village headman and a local politician. This increases their power exponentially and attracts hangers on and “Goons”. Usually the Zanindar is also the wealthiest person in the village and will host large gatherings for the rest of the village partly to appease them and partly as a power play. This is what this song depicts. Korbins question: why are the women separate? Because men and women do not mingle in traditional society. Especially uppercaste girls . They would not be allowed to socialize freely with the opposite sex. Women are usually tools in the hands of their male family. To be controlled and married off strategically. Rinky, the protagonist is a village girl and normally would be strictly controlled but her fathers power and influence gives her some immunity. That will explain a good portion of who these characters are and hopefully you will be able to appreciate the brilliant screenplay and movie better for it. Forget everything you’ve seen in Bollywood. This is the real India.
You should definitely watch this movie.. it's very romantic but also hard-hitting.. it made me cry.. Also, this was remade in hindi as 'Dhadak' which was the debut of Sridevi's daughter Janhvi.. not quite awesome like the original one but it was good.. Sridevi's daughter was praised for her performance..
