Sometimes I feel this abhang is dedicated partly to Lord Vitthal and partly to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj...I have read detailed history about sambhaji maharaj and he was the king who provided military protection to the "Vaari" all the way from Alandi/Dehu to Pandharpur...Also there is mention of "Purandarcha Parmatma ha" meaning lord of Purandar...Interestingly Sambhaji Maharaj was born on Purandar fort too...So it's just a hunch but I think this abhang is dedicated to Sambhaji Maharaj too- The greatest king Maharashtra had after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

In Indian culture you can unite with the supreme through “Nada Brahaman” literally meaning reaching supreme via music & chanting. That’s what he was doing. He carried his audience along with him to experience “Nada Brahaman” It’s called divine experience. He was singing Rag Malkauns. Initially he started with alaapi & then he sang Bhajan for lord Vithala & after that it’s called Gajar. Gajar means chanting lord Vithala’s name in musical way. The bhajan is in Language Marathi. This is one of Mahesh’s best performance out of many such brilliant performances.

Shri Omkarnarh Havaldar of the kirana gharana is one such lesser known but absolutely fantastic musician. I heard him perform at Sawai Gandhrava 2019. What a musician! His Multani was scintillating as was his mazhe maaher pandhari. Exceptionally talented.

I am proud that I am from the same city as Mahesh Kale - Pune. This falls under the ‘bhajan’ or ‘abhang’ genre. This is a centuries old abhang sung in praise of Lord Vithhal - the deity of one of the very famous temples in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. This is very famous with the ‘Waarkari’ people of Maharashtra. This and many such bhajans/abhang are sung EVERYDAY in the temples of remote villages of Maharashtra, especially by Waarkaris. Waarkaris are mostly farmers. You can imagine, farmers after a long day toil in their farms, going home after sunset, taking a bath and then going to the village temple and singing these bhajans/abhangs together to praise their deity. This also keeps them away from indulging into other sinful, wasteful activities like boozing, etc. Most waarkaris and pure vegetarians and they don’t drink as well. Maharashtra has a rich tradition of this all over. This particular abhang has been sung umpteen number of times many times by stalwarts like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and many others. In fact, I have seen Mahesh Kale and Rahul Deshpande jamming on this abhang, live on an event call ‘Diwali Pahaat’ in Pune. Diwali Pahaat literally means the early morning of Diwali. It is an annual event held on the first day of Diwali. You can find that video as well on RUclips - that’s even more mesmerising.

"Kanada Raja Pandharicha " translates to "The Canarese /Kannada king of Pandharpur " . The title is reserved for Lord Vitthal / Panduranga who is essentially Krishna. His great shrine was at Hampi in Karnataka but the deity was shifted when the 5 Bahamani Sultans of the Deccan attacked the empire of Vijayanagara and killed the king Aliya Ramaraya in the battle. That ensued a destruction of the city and desecration of Hindu temples around. Therefore, the deity was smuggled out just in time and He finally ended up in Pandharpur of Maharashtra

The inscriptions clearly stste the patronages provided to the temple by prominent people like Samrat Mahadevaraya Yadava , Dwaravatipuravaradhish Samrat Ramchandraraya Yadav , Kaaranaadhipati Hemadri Pandit etc . Even the old temple before renovation was built `in a unique style called Hemadpanti Architecture (named after Hemadri Pandit)

I'm an ardent learner of Indian languages and Music. I've learnt 6 other Indian languages other than my mother tongue Tamil. Marathi is one of them. As I've been learning Carnatic and Hindustani, I could tell for sure: Marathi Abhangs totally transcend me to another level of devotion towards Lord Vithoba. Shri Omkarnarh Havaldar of the kirana gharana is one such lesser known but absolutely fantastic musician. I heard him perform at Sawai Gandhrava 2019. What a musician! His Multani was scintillating as was his mazhe maaher pandhari. Exceptionally talented.

I am proud that I am from the same city as Mahesh Kale - Pune. This falls under the ‘bhajan’ or ‘abhang’ genre. This is a centuries old abhang sung in praise of Lord Vithhal - the deity of one of the very famous temples in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. This is very famous with the ‘Waarkari’ people of Maharashtra. This and many such bhajans/abhang are sung EVERYDAY in the temples of remote villages of Maharashtra, especially by Waarkaris. Waarkaris are mostly farmers. You can imagine, farmers after a long day toil in their farms, going home after sunset, taking a bath and then going to the village temple and singing these bhajans/abhangs together to praise their deity. This also keeps them away from indulging into other sinful, wasteful activities like boozing, etc. Most waarkaris and pure vegetarians and they don’t drink as well. Maharashtra has a rich tradition of this all over.
This particular abhang has been sung umpteen number of times many times by stalwarts like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and many others. In fact, I have seen Mahesh Kale and Rahul Deshpande jamming on this abhang, live on an event call ‘Diwali Pahaat’ in Pune. Diwali Pahaat literally means the early morning of Diwali. It is an annual event held on the first day of Diwali. You can find that video as well on RUclips - that’s even more mesmerising.

your story is incorrect . The deity was taken to Hampi after Yaadava Kingdom collapsed in Maharashtra and it came under Muslim rule . Afterwards , during the reign of Shri Krishnadevaraya , Bhanudas Maharaj took the deity back to Pandharpur with his devotion . The deity was already at Pandharpur even before the Yadava period. The inscriptions clearly stste the patronages provided to the temple by prominent people like Samrat Mahadevaraya Yadava , Dwaravatipuravaradhish Samrat Ramchandraraya Yadav , Kaaranaadhipati Hemadri Pandit etc . Even the old temple before renovation was built `in a unique style called Hemadpanti Architecture (named after Hemadri Pandit)

* I was introduced to classical music by your reaction to Kaushiki Chakraborthy's amazing performance of Bhimpalasi. And for that I can never be grateful enough. I sometimes come back to watch their reaction to it rather than listening to the original video, just for kicks.
* The lyrics in this performance is taken from the Marathi poem Kanada Raja Pandaricha written by G.D. Madgulkar. The title translates to "The King of Padharpur, whose origin is from the land of Kanada (Kannada)". This is because the idol of Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur is believed to have originated from the Vijayanagara empire, now Karnataka.
* Vitthal is an incarnation of Lord Krishna. The story behind the Lord acquiring this alias is that once He went to visit one of His devotees, Pundalik, as a test to his devotion towards his parents. Pundalik gave a brick (Veeta in Marathi) for the Lord to stand on while He waits for Pundalik to finish his duties towards his parents. Seeing his steadfast devotion towards his parents Lord Krishna granted a boon to Pundalik which is the cause of the creation of Lord Vitthala, the One who Stands/Stood on a Brick.
* In most of the classical/semi-classical music, be it either Hindustani or Carnatic, the full poem seems to be rarely sung. And instead portions of it are sung and resung again to fit the various rhythms and flows of the raga. Which also means two performances of the same poem can have completely different feel to them. And because of the missing lyrics, seem like different poems all together. Not to mention the complications brought about by minor differences in the lyrics themselves, and add to that differences in pronunciation.

Abhang means "without end", which is quite well seen in the repetitive chant of the Lord's name, Vitthal towards the end of the performance. The chant is intended to induce a trance where all sense of time is lost and only Vitthal remains in your thoughts.
* It was heart warming to see you participate in the chant at the end, and I say this as an atheist. The purpose of this type of music is to feel entranced and that induces happiness in both the singer and the listener. It doesn't matter if the content is devotional be it Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Pagan or any other.
