- Sorry everyone about the original upload being taken down, there was a glitch in the sound... had a lot of trouble getting things levelled for some reason. Anyway, here we go for attempt number two.
I head to Home Depot to build a platform and heat shielding for my Cubic Mini Cub.

I have the cubic mini grizzly in our mobile ski cabin. Absolutely love it! Keeps our family of 5 toasty warm and dry all winter. Make sure you do the initial firing of the stove outside. The toxic fumes that come off the stove from the paint are horrible and it will leave a smell in the van for a long time. After you have cured the paint with the first use you don’t need to worry.
That is excellent advice, never would have thought the pain needs to cure and it's going to potentially be toxic and smell like bad news. Cheers mate
Man, there are other "van life" channels that I've watched that are literally 20-30 minute commercials of equipment to put in a $200,000 van. All of the top of the line equipment and montages of the van being in the shop being upgraded. This guy here stops at the hardware store, orders on Amazon and sleeps in the van while his building it. His channel is legit. Edit: And as i look to the right at my playlist, the following video is exactly that, 4 X 4 Sprinter van. I guess if you have the money, might as well get the best. Still prefer Foresty's van though.

Yah I can’t watch those channels. No offense to anyone, it’s just not realistic to 90% of the population. About a year back I watched a ‘Let’s see their van build” and they had custom carpentry walls, doors, cabinets, slide outs, custom made everything, with heated floors. Remote temperature control & lighting with an app included. ~~It made me want some of that daddy money 😂 then I remember how much I love being able to survive and that comes from learning how to make something out of nearly nothing & bare necessity. They can have it. If we ever need to bug out I’m with y’all who can figure things out 👌. Foresty has the right idea.. one 2 x 4.. a few screws, make it bend to your will LoL
But I don't like the way those expensive vans are designed. Well, maybe the most expensive ones ate good. But I prefer original bone built. Besides, most of them use materials that outgas toxins. No good to be confined in a small space breathing those toxins. I could smell the toxic plastics/chems outgassing when i toured the vans on the RV sales lot.

Gotta appreciate the multitasking. Its hard to install a stove. Its probably crazy hard to install a stove from within a van. Its downright rocket-science to install a stove from within a van AND film it!

Me and my best mate had the qubic mini, was the greatest little fire! Kept us warm in our big rv while we lived on the resort carpark in big white! Great times thanks for the memories

Hey Foresty just a few suggestions. First let me say I have never worked on a cubic mini, however I have put in several wood stoves. Might I suggest the first fire you burn through your stove you do it outside your van. the oils and paints on wood stoves need to cure and the first fire usually stinks up a whole house. Another thing when you put your chimney pipe on I saw how the arrow said air flow and pointed toward the crimped end upwards. I do not know if the mini is different than a normal sized wood stove but if you put your crimped end pointing upward you will have creosote running out of your joints in your pipe. Love the content. Keep up the fantastic work.
I was thinking of just opening all the doors and running the vent full blast... but if the chemical smell is really bad... maybe I will do it outside heh!
It will smell REALLY bad...and then everything in your van will as well. Plus, you shouldn't be breathing the fumes.
Also, your Ninja countertop...how about tiling it?... to protect that would, and paint on it, from catching fire...or just being too hot and releasing fumes). OR, covering the counter with the 18G like your heat panels. Would be easy to keep clean.

I have one of those, definatly first burn outside and get it hot as you can, or just continue to snuggle with it to keep warm.
@@forestyforest the fumes are terrible. Our cubic didn't stop smelling till about 30hrs of burning. I suggest taking it camping and just feeding outside for a whole day and go from there.
Seasoning a new wood stove; Definitely outside. I'd recommend get a high heat burn for a good hour then let it get dead cold Repeat 2 more times. You will notice a significant drop in smell with each cycle. I had to.do this for my arctic bell tent before running it inside. The stove pipe threw off the most smell. Once the metal turned colour the smell dissipated. Hardwood pellets will get it super hot you can add it to your wood to pump up the heat or use pellets on its own. You can play around with different amounts. Hilarious Intro today 🤣

I LOVE these episodes where you work on your van and do a bunch of chores. I can't believe you actually had the motivation to take your work apart to move the stove away from the wood. Wise choice, but it must've been such a pain to take apart the stuff you just spent hours putting together. I can't wait to see the wood stove in action!
Nice! I’m going through about 2 litres of diesel a night right now in Whitehorse Yukon. I expect come January when we get the -40 I’ll probably double that. I need to get a bigger tank, although I did sacrifice the space to carry a 5 gallon jerrycan of diesel with me. I’m just a couple months into this van life. I Love your channel. You are very inspiring.
Spent 7 hours in the ER passing a kidney stone so when I seen a new video up it totally made my day so much better.

Foresty! Before you light the inaugural flame set the whole unit up chimney and all outside for its first fire, so it can cook the paint and won't stink up the van!

I have the same cubic mini cub in my step van. Been using it for over three years now. All the clearance specs are way cautious. I think you will find the shielding is mostly unnecessary except for the countertop. I also use a thermo electric fan. Hope you like it as much as I do.

at some point you will have hot sparks coming out your chimney even with a spark arrestor. Make sure a spark does not get too close to the van gas cap. Sparks are caused in part by using wood that has a moisture content. Use the driest wood you can find.

I squealed when I saw the mini wood stove thumbnail before I started the video. Being in bed with a mini wood stove is THE BEST relationship status EVERRRRR!! The van is heating up, I’ve often thought about the mini wood stove for the bus. Cool video.
Beautiful install. Next time you need to cut sheetmetal, try cutting instead of sawing. Take a straight edge and a new utility blade in your knife. Score both sides and fold the score line over an edge like you are using a sheetmetal brake. Flip it and fold it 180* the other way. Now just flap it back and forth, until the metal fatigues at the snap line. Easy to do and it makes a super clean cut.

Quick tip from personal experience - If you notice the van becoming too hot whenever you use the stove, Insulating the flue pipe with some of that fiberglass exhaust wrap does the trick. I have a high bed and a lot of insulation though, so your results will probably vary. Looks good tho! Could you fit the smaller diesel tank ontop of the larger one, and plumb them both together?
The cap on the small tank was leaky

the only "fail" of the design of this (and most r.v. woodstoves) is that they draw combustion air from inside the vehicle... this pulls in cold air from the outside... and potentially depleting the oxygen in the closed space. They should draw air in from an intake piped to the outside and preheated by passing alongside or underneath the firebox .... working on my own design for my camper. BTW Vermeculite is non flammable and makes a great heat insulator and it is cheap, just don't inhale the dust particles. There is also refractory board available but it's about $75 for a 2x4' sheet. Rock wool is also a great heat insulator. Just some food for thought. I have had a considerably larger woodstove in my 32' 5th wheel for many years. Not a good idea to drive at any appreciable speed with a fire going... you will create a raging inferno in the firebox and chimney from the suction created by the wind passing the chimney and you'll leave a trail of sparks behind you.
I'm planning on leaving the front windows cracked.. the air exchange will be good for removing moisture.. i get frost above the headliner when i leave everything sealed up overnight. Thanks yes insulation is on the list too!

It's funny when I first started watching you, obviously I was here for the hikes and cooks and stunning shots. Then you decided to do a new van build and I was excited to see what the new "setup" would be, what I didn't expect was to actually enjoy watching the construction parts. Something about the way you cut the clips just makes it a really cool montage. Cool to see you still finding new ways to build and expand. Chur bro.
if he starts building a house somewhere in the mountains one day, that would be surely watchable too. I love watching people work :)
If i may recommend something: please pre-fire the stove outside for the first time. It will cook the paint on, and won't leave chemical smell and fumes in your van that would linger for a while. I know the desire to do the first fire in it's designed spot, but i'm only thinking about you long term safety.

love the mini wood stove. Be mindful that wood burning uses up a lot of the available oxygen in any given space. You'll need to keep a window slightly open or have a pipe vented up from the floor(can double as the leg). also, you'll need a kettle with water always heated on the stove otherwise it will suck the moisture out of you. Your clearances look fine(good job:), keep the beautiful butcher block well oiled and it will be fine you have plenty of distance there. If you find your way down to Mendocino, Ca, look me up and I'll take you to a sweet hike-in hot spring. Peace
He mentioned in a previous video that moisture control (namely removing it) is the main goal with this stove, so he'll probably only use it when there's excess in the van already. But good insights all around.
Regarding the oxygen consumption I don't know about the one he bought, but they're supposed to have a fresh air intake, preferably from the bottom. So the cold air comes in, feeds the fire and goes out, all in a closed system.
But yeah, wherever a fire is going on, one must be extra cautious.

Excellent choice for a wood stove Foresty! Cold days and nights will be more comfy inside your van.
That'll be cozy as f with that in there on a cold winter's night, and good backup for diesel heat.
Plus you get the added benefit of looking like a 1780's steamship while driving down the road.

That little Cubic mini wood stove looks fantastic. Have seen it on other Vloggers, and it works really well.
As a suggestion, that fan you put on top of your stove…it’s so big. In our home, we have a wood burner and have just bought on eBay, a tiny double bladed fan which works just the same but it’s two fans which are only around 90mm in diameter, and would work really well in your van. Wish I could send you a picture, but I don’t know how on RUclips.

Get one of the cheap harbor freight touchless temp guns. I used it alot when i installed my wood stove. I only used a single layer of stainless steel sheet metal, and it works really well. With two layers you'll be good to go. Great work!
Good idea, you could point it around and find cold spots in the van insulation too. I found mine doesn't work on shiny metal (e.g brake discs) when I had a seized caliper on my motorbike.
@@dazednconfused31337 agreed, shinny metals give variable temps. I think the more expensive units work better. But i think I paid $15, so i cant complain.
It's kinda sad that I'm this excited for the stove install... I would keep a pot of tea on there all winter long!
New Subscriber here.... It's so nice to watch a RUclipsr who films around my city where I used to live. Right now my husband and I live on 2 acres N.W. of Calgary in a little hamlet called Water Valley. I say "little" because if you blink you would drive right through it. ha ha There is quite a big community here consisting of ranchers and farmers. Most of my subs hail from Ontario and the US, but I now have another one from Western Canada. I would say most van lifers who live in their van during the winter months have a cubic mini wood stove. The first time I saw one I was amazed that it could radiate such heat. I was so impressed. Anyways, I am watching your older videos to familiarize myself to your content. So far, I am really enjoying your channel.

The wood heater can also be used as stove top for cooking or for keeping food or coffee warm. It's great multifunction addition.
@Michael Rows besides roasting your nuts, you can also fry your beacon and eggs & such.
You should definitely do the first burn outside so you don’t have paint fumes in the van and it also helps a The paint set in

Soo excited to see this Cubic install - something I have wrestled with for 15 years since I first discovered the Kimberly, but too chicken to make the jump.
What an awesome lifestyle. I don't know that I'd have the discipline to live productively in a cramped van, but it's enjoyable to watch someone who does have the discipline.
I’ve found coal and yellow duraflame logs work great in my cubic grizzly stove. Cut them into 3-4 pieces, and they’ll last for 1-2 hour at a time.Coal will let you sleep thru the night without having to feed the stove.works great in my suburban. For a couple years now up here in Alaska’s -50F nights. The problem becomes regulation of too much heat
I understand the fire stove as being a self-sustainable system. I'm not sure if the value you are adding to your life is worth it compared to just using a diesel heater and the same cooking systems you have been using. It's very interesting to watch keep up the good work.
The thing anyone who camps in the winter acknowledges and has to deal with constantly is condensation. A wood stove is the only form of heat that doesn't create condensation, but actually dries out the air in its environment. I've been fulltiming for years off and on up in montana and a wood stove is something I've been trying to figure out how to use in my camper without cutting a hole in the roof...not sure if it's possible.
He needs a back up plan. He’s off grid in the fucking mountains.
I also had my doubts, but in his particular case it might be worth it as he goes into the wild in freezing temperatures. With the stove he can use the resources of the area while saving diesel. Plus it emits dry heat.

As opposed to every #vanlifer I’ve seen do this, I trust you know what you’re signing up for. And I respect that you KNOW it’s not meant as a full-time heat source. You have other reasons for installing it in your van. I can’t believe the number of people still installing these thinking it will heat their van through the night. Yes…if you get up every few hours to give it another hand-size chunk of wood.
