Wait what...
Fun one, slightly inaccurate though.
When Gordon enters any vehicle, one of his hitboxes - specifically the havok hitbox- is removed. When you leave the vehicle, that hitbox is re-added to the player.
However, since the airboat is deleted while Gordon is in it, (precise glitch), the havok hitbox is never re-added. Therefore, he is still technically inside the boat, as far as the game is aware. Hence the phrase "he is technically a boat".

In the Source engine that would be an entirely expected thing to happen.

This run is very aesthetically pleasing for some reason, just the smooth way he moves and clips through objects. Bonus hilarity every time he slams an NPC to teleport them.

The speedruns of this game are always so wild.
if you know the different ways to exploit and manipulate movement in the source engine, or like know how to surf and bunny hop, you'll understand how hard and precise his movements are in this game and it's so amazing how he executes all of them almost perfectly. He's pressing so many buttons at a time on top of saving every few seconds, and even commentating the game.

Though I do agree that the category name is a bit misleading, it doesn't change just how impressive this run is, especially compared to runs from a few years ago!
It's more of a terminology problem than anything else, same thing as in portal 2 runs.

For someone that's not fully aware, can you explain what you mean? I don't know much about speedrunning.
Alok1905 As I understand it, source engine games (half life, portal, etc.) define inbounds as anything within the map box. So when they were flying around during the firsts skip, even though they were out of where the game intended, they never left the map and were still technically inbounds.
@@AleHodjason for valve games its considered in bounds as long as you dont leave the modeled area and jump into the "black" area. Unlike most inbound runs you can leave the normal playing area.
I almost didn't watch this because all the cutscenes make the run kind of a drag -- good thing skips have been found for nearly every single one of them. Phenomenal run, great job.
Good old Gordon. Clipping through walls, climbing entire mountains, literally flying through the air faster than most vehicles all while being a boat and not even existing.

10:35 Train frames are weird, they don't seem to happen quite often when I'm playing but back in the day I used to have a lot of dropped frames because of it.

so we basically use the save delete to execute a map command, and use ingame vehicles to execute a noclip command, god damnit this game is spagethi xD

20:00 This bug he's talking aobut with you being invunerable to damage and enemies capable of standing inside you but you can't move (because you can collide with them, but they can't collide with you) problem is very similar to a death bug in tremulous where you can let your health drop below zero and then raise it back above zero to flag yourself as dead. Corpses in tremulous have a boundry box, however unlike quake 3 arena (tremulous runds on ioquake3) other entities can pass through it. The corpse only retains the bounding box so it doesn't fall through tiny gaps in floors i assume.
Not _entirely_ similar, the game still sees Gordon as alive. It's just that he's inside an imaginary boat, and the game doesn't understand that mime isn't real life, so it doesn't realise he should still be hurtable.
(By which I mean, the hitbox that lets him be damaged is removed when he gets in a vehicle, and re-added when he gets out. So, if Gordon gets in but _the vehicle_ gets out, Gordon never gets that hitbox back, and thus can't be hit by attacks.)

Lots of runners have bound the use key to a mouse button, so it really isnt that hard.

When i try to clip nothing happens and I just keep smashing myself into the wall. I don't understand why this is so successful all the time.
you have to do the boat level trigger glitch to clip like that
You have to become a boat.
You have to remove one of your hitboxes first.
I'm replaying HL2 for achievements now.... I can tell I missed a few Lambda caches already... >_

I don't understand the category, "its inbounds but not inbounds" 5 minutes later he's out of the map. Can someone explain?
Out of bounds is defines as the weird void area outside the playable area. The Speedrun rules dictate that 50% or less of the body must stay out of this void to be considered inbound. Some parts of the map seem like they're out of bounds, because normally inaccessible scenery has no collisions, but it's still outside the void.
There are two type of void. The first allows you to keep your velocity while the second stops you. The OOB category is faster in-game but slower RTA - hence why he's doing In bounds.
The category is going to be renamed to something along the lines of "any% no voidclip" instead of inbounds. In source engine, there is a black void that exists around anything not in a skybox, and that is what we consider out of bounds in all source games. There are times in this run where you can actually see the black void but parts of waezones hitbox are always inside of the brushes with the skybox. This would not be allowed by the definition of inbounds in say, portal, which is why the category name is being changed

For those of you this is how i think the boat glitch works.
If you push a boat through a level change trigger but you dont go through it yet and you get in, You will load the next map and the game thinks that you are in the boat, so you have the properties of a boat.
When was this glitch discovered? Yesterday? Because every HL2 run so far has been over 1 hour long.
