That is such a good idea to use the crayon peelings in a half pan. You are the first person besides myself that I have seen use distilled water instead of tap. We have very hard water where I live. I first bought a set of 15 of the neocolor ii. I liked them so much that I bought the full set of 126. It was a surprise when I discovered that they no longer sell that set.
Thank you for this tip. Very handy indeed, and an excellent option to take the Neocolor II colours on the road without using so much space. Happy painting 🖌️🎨!!
You could make your own pans by saving the shavings of the crayons. I do this and have a lovely new palette full of Neocolors II to use like watercolours. Since they are 100% product, keeping the shavings means you don't waste anything.
i did the pencil sharpener thing with my woodless water color pencils and put them into a pallet then added a couple drops water now i have the pigment if i want to use it , 24 new colors to paint with lol
@@TwistedArtdesigns Thank you!😃 Yesterday I immediately followed your advice, I didn't know how to sharper neocolor and what to do with what was left, and it worked!😃 Thank you very much!🥰💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I have some empty eyeshadow palettes maybe I'll try it ☺ I only have the basic colors, so maybe I can create some new colors! Thanks for sharing your idea's ☺😍☺
@twisted art design what a brilliant idea for the shavings! I can do the same are for the gelatos. I just got the 84set,the metallics and the gouache of caran d ache-i cannot wait to try this-thank you.
melody spinrad Thanks for watching! I love doing this and having both the crayons to work with an a “to go” palette to take with me in my bag for art journalling away from home. Works great. I did a tin with just colors I use for making faces and hair! Then I can grab that and sit and art journal a face with all the colors right there in pans! Works awesome! Happy arting and have a blessed day!
I discovered the Neocolor II recently and I’m so in love with them, I got all the colors I could find. I did see the tip for putting shavings in a half pan before and bought a few empty half pans but haven’t used it yet and my local store is quite expensive with empty pens, but I think I still have some pill containers in a box that’s meant to go to the thrift store but I’ll dig them out now!
I think these are great ideas. Thanks for sharing these ideas. I am in the process of adding these to my Plein air gear. I thought I might add them to my current watercolor palette but cut them to fit the size of a pan then put enough water in the bottom to hold them in place. Is the crayon soft enough that a craft blade would go through them? I ask because they appear to go through a sharpener with ease.
That pill container idea is your brilliant!! Literally been looking for exactly that for the last couple of years! If we put in place about that before, and I’ve tried all kinds of different things up to and including having a friend 3-D print an insert to fit inside of an L toyed‘s 10! Thank you for a great video, good idea send an introduction to Neocolors!!🤘🤪🤘
This is a great idea to put the shavings into pans! Do you seal your paintings after using the Caran d’Ache neocolor II crayons? And if so what do you seal them with? Also, do you ever get wax blooms like can happen with colored pencil?
I do not get wax blooms with Neocolor II. I use matte spray fixative over my art journal pages. I like several brands. My favorite is: amzn.to/3VlcILq Once the fixative dries, within minutes, I use Gamblin Cold Wax on top… just rub a little all over the page with your finger and then buff with a soft cloth. It keeps pages from sticking together. amzn.to/4c0rIWc I hope that helps. This is my process and I do both of those steps as the last steps of all my art journal pages. 💚
Another good way to use these crayons is to color them on the tin or some other hard surface then dip your wet brush in it and just use them as watercolor like that.
I have these and like them. They are not richer color pigmentation than artist grade watercolor. But they are more opaque so you can use these for touch ups to cover mistakes.
Dot from UK Hi, I have just ordered an 84 set of these they are coming on Saturday, a Christmas present from me to me, can't wait to use them. Excellent idea about the pill box. I buy them with 4 weeks Mon to Fri so 28 containers for my shavings, Thanks for the tip I didn't think of that. When the days of the week rub off. I usually buy another one and chuck the old one, I won't be doing that anymore. Thank you for the tip, that will be very useful. I also heard you say that you bought the single colours for the ones you don't have. (I'm British and we spell colour with a u in case you or anyone else thinks I have spelt it wrong.) Please can you tell me where you buy the single ones from, I have a feeling I will want to buy extra white ones? I was watching another video earlier today and she was mixing some really cool colours with white, do you do that? Thank you so much for the info, I do appreciate you sparing the time sharing your tips. Lots of love from the UK, Dot x.
Hello Dot! I have a playlist of Neocolor II videos you might like: ruclips.net/p/PL2aUWL5dYIxE8KTpvKru-xqIlgx0Shp7n I am in the U.S. and online they sold open stock on DickBlick.com. I mix with white as well. These are so versatile. My favorite art supply! You will love the gift you gave yourself! Happy holidays!
Yes, they are gorgeous, so opaque. Love them. Good advice, so they stay sharp point AND there is no waste. But please be careful the colours get mouldy in the pans, because they are free from harmful prevervatives (Formaldehyde etc). That’s an advantage, too
I was just going to cut the bottom end of the crayon off and stick it in a pan. I did wonder about using a hot air gun to melt it into the pan but figured it was probably just easier to cut a piece off. Never thought of shaving it off with a sharpener.
Hi I really enjoyed your video, I was wondering which sharpener you used ? I have purchased one similar to urs that is 8.0 mm but I’m not sure if my neocolor 2 will fit in em. I would be happy to get the one like urs! 🥰
Regine Kalo if you want to seal a mixed media piece or even an art journal page, you would use a spray fixative. They come in matte or gloss. I never seal my art journal pages and they are fine. If it were a piece to hang on the wall that I were selling, i would spray with matte fixative. Hope that helps.
I never add enough water to make the consistency sloppy. I only add enough to mix it creamy and fill the containers and then work out the container with a water brush. Never an issue with spillage.
austimcoloring Mom it is actually a glass container meant for planting a succulent garden! It was the right height on the sides so it became my neocolors home! I use empty toilet paper rolls, cut in half, to divide colors by family within the container.
I have been doing this for several years and have never had a leak. I don’t get them overly wet I guess. And if I put it in my tote to take it on the go for art in the park, I put it in a ziplock sandwich bag, just in case. I love this but maybe it isn’t for everyone.
amie mitchell How interesting! Maybe because the company originally made colored pencils and graphite pencils. They expanded to other art supplies later.
The company was only given the name Caran D'Ache 9 year after its creation. It's original name was actually fabrique genevoise de crayons which translates to Genevan factory of pencils.
John Fishman they are a different consistency. I use watercolors as well. And at times, I go over the watercolors with Neocolors. They are buildable and lovely. Personal preference. I use all kinds of mediums. These are most versatile in my opinion. I am a mixed media artist and these can be used with acrylics. I love that! Watercolors and acrylics don’t normally play nice together.
Not a waste at all! By putting them into watercolor pans it makes them portable without crayon breakage. You use a waterbrush. No waste at all! Same as tipping them off the crayon. Guess it is a matter of preference and how you like to use your supplies. If you sharpen them and throw the shavings away...now that would be a waste! By doing this, you have the best of both worlds, You have crayon to use and pans to use. It is art supply bliss!! 💚💚💚💚💚💚
Liked & subscribed! Great tips! Please be more sensitive to the term flesh when referring only to the Caucasian flesh colors. You’ve got a whole other range of flesh colors on the viewer’s right side in your clever planter container holding the rest of your crayons. I know manufacturers use flesh as a term to describe only Caucasian, but my hope is that the artist community starts making them aware of how exclusionary that practice is. Imagine being an artist who is a person of color looking for their flesh color and it’s called Toledo Brown.
Michele Cordaro thanks for watching. I did not name the colors... Caran d’Ache did and the color I was choosing was called “Flesh”. Although I am caucasian, I do artwork portraits of African Americans and people of other races as well. As an artist I choose the appropriate color of supply to create the skin tone. I know that the “flesh” crayon is not the only color in the Neocolor II palette to create a beautiful skin tone, it all depends on the nationality of the person you are creating as to what colors to choose. And I would never want to offend anyone.

We don’t have that problem in Arizona… it is so dry here. But good advice for others in wet and humid climates.

The one I have is by Kum. You can find them at Blick or Jetpens.
How do you protect a painting made with these neocolor II? also how to protect if you use them in mixed media over acrylic paints?
