Why don't I use these More? Using Caran D'Ache Neocolor 2 Watercolor Crayon to Paint a Poppy

*This new lesson covers everything you need to know about getting started in watercolor crayons. I hope you enjoy it!
As for watercolor crayon recommendations, my first choice is Caran Dache: shrsl.com/2ugxf , as they have open stock and sets, and the quality is outstanding. Another very comparable budget alternative to Caran Dache is the Lyra watercolor crayons available in sets: shrsl.com/2ugyj They are about 95% as good for half the price
*But if you want a really budget alternative you can try the Crayola Portfolio water-soluble oil pastels, they are awesome and a good way to test out this type of medium for a song: shrsl.com/2ugxy
If you want to transfer a pattern to a toned surface white transfer paper is handy: amzn.to/3bLOJzi

Another great video and right on time for me. I was feeling a little down, and then I saw the notification. Your chipper happy disposition always puts me in a better mood and makes me want to create. Thank you for the videos.
I really love how the Neocolor II's look when I use the Derwent Inktense pencils for underpainting...it makes my ok art look like I know what I'm doing! LOL
Semi-random tip: next time you paint your wall red or orange, get the primer tinted with some red too. I'll look pink, of course, but the transparent red will cover better because it's not reflecting stark white 😋
Or even more random, some paint manufacturers recommend mid grey undercoat.
"Why don't I use there more?" - LOL, I think this is what we all ask ourselves about our wc crayons. They seem to be this amazing medium that everyone loves but rarely ever actually uses. I also have the Neocolor 2 and I absolutely LOVE them, but somehow I usually end up reaching for regular watercolors or even watercolor pencils more often. The crayons are so good though!
I don’t have any water colours so think I’m just gonna treat myself and buy these lol
@@TwilightAngel_89 They're lots of fun, I'm sure you'll love them.
I definitely need to start using mine a lot more, too.
@@justacatwhocantype yeah I’m gonna buy some definitely 😄might as well buy the best ones first time
Same question I keep asking myself about the full set of Inktense I just had to have, but now I think the time has come to put all these amazing kits to good use. I don’t have to be a master painter to have a good time creating, and being the rebel I am a lot of this all is going to be combined until they cry uncle! It’s as if I’ve been locked away on an island, oh wait, I kinda was, but now that I’m back in the real world again and see all the fantastic things on the market it’s time to go bonkers with it.
I just had to do it. I ordered from Blick.
Love my Neocolor 2...all the Caran D’Ache are “the best” and a bit pricey...but really worth it. But I’m lucky to have a local art supply store that carries them open stock. So when they put them on sale ($1.80?) or even not, I can afford to build my set a few at a time. I have around 30 or so now. I’ve got to do that with their other color products too. Thanks Lindsay! Great instruction! You just make everything so accessible. 👍
Thank you:)
Oh wow I have these and totally forgot about them 😮 I remember they were spendy too. TFS beautiful.
Sorry to ask but can you please do more tutorials like this, I've had the 84 set for years but have only used them a couple times because I just don't really know what to do with them
You can use them in adult coloring books. Not too much water on brush. Doing that now in my oldest coloring book is easy and faster than colored pencils.
Thank you Lindsay! I have been wanting more tutorials using CD Neocolor II. I would like to know WHAT and HOW various medium plays well with the Neo II. I would also like to know what DOES NOT play well with this medium. It would make a very good YT tutorial. I am hard pressed to find good content painting with these. Bravo! Thank you again.
I'm a big fan of NII watercolor crayons, but it took me several attempts to realize something you've also mentioned in the video: if I'm not happy with how the drawing has tuned out, it means it needs more layers! I have a very limited collection of individually purchased colors, but they're so easy to mix that it's really all I need. They're a lovely medium for quick art studies and art journaling.
They work really great on fabric along with GAC 900 fabric medium by Golden.
I love my Neocolor II. I bought the Is for resist with watercolor but the 2s are my precious. :)
Gorgeous poppy painting! I’m so thrilled to see you using watercolor crayons. I followed your recommendations from the last time you posted a video using these. I use a watercolor ground on my canvases and then seal the finished piece with an aerosol archival permanent fixative. Love working with these! Thank you for being such an amazing teacher! ❤️
This poppy is so beautiful! I have a few of these watercolor crayons but I’ve never used them. Now I really want to give them a try.
Thanks Lindsay 💕
quick tip if you're using the watercolor pencils, if I have any break I keep the tips as well as the shavings if I need to sharpen a lot on a color and can use them later for washes etc. If you are like me and have a fair number of different sets a single palette won't do it all so I keep them in very small ziploc bags or an old pill bottle and only put them in a palette when I need to use them. Quick tip with the broken pieces I crush them up a bit first using an old pill crusher. Hope that helps!!
I am not a watercolor painter. Painting just isn’t my lane. Take Lindsay’s flower, it is gorgeous but I wouldn’t know what to do with it, though it would be fantastic on a cabinet. Then I guess it would need the right sealant to protect it.
The first wc crayons I ever tried were Neo II at Santa Ana’s Art Bar after reading about them in Summerset Studio magazine. They are fabulous in mixed media collage. I have been disappointed with everything else I have ever tried. Makes me wonder why I bother to try other brands. Apparently I want to try other brands, even knowing that I will be disappointed. Seriously I’m considering getting Lyra and Crayola Portfolios.
In my experience you can make these stay put by using an acrylic medium instead of water. I use Neo II on fabric all the time. I just use Golden’s fabric medium in place of water. I let it cure for a couple of weeks but I have been able to wash them. I have several pairs of panties that I’ve used Neo II on. They are at least 3 years old and there’s been no fading and no transfer to other clothes ( I practice surface design techniques on under clothing to get over the fear of “wasting” supplies).
The other thing I have done successfully is paint my own wall decals with Neo II. That time there was some transfer of color to the wall but I didn’t let the acrylic medium fully cure. I stuck the decals to the wall the next day with liquid starch. Those were fabric too and the color that transferred came right off.
I also use Neo II on top of gesso all the time in my art journal. It’s not canvass though. Usually student grade Strathmore 140# watercolor paper. I love how acrylic mediums make watercolor paper supple like leather. Maybe Neo II would work on canvass with an acrylic medium.
Thank you for the gouache tip. One of the reasons, probably, I keep trying other watercolor crayons is the pale reds in Neo II. Red is my favorite color and I have to have many different shades.
👍✌️🙏❤️ beautiful. U have so much talent! I can’t even draw a decent stick figure 😂
I have shavings in 1/2 pans for travel and I use them as watercolors. I love their opaque quality which is sort of like gouach, but I am not familiar with gouache and only recently bought some gouache. I've had some of these crayons for almost 10 years with no noticeable difference between the really old ones and newer ones.
Fantastic pls mention the exact colour you are using Thanks
Omg I have these crayons I had to have them and then... I never used them 😭🤣🤦♀️ I just wasn’t sure what to do with them except for the one tiny reason I got them... so I’ll be watching this!! 👍🏼 thanks!
As always beautiful work and I love the Caran D’Ache Neocolor II, I’ve never tried the Neocolor I but I have never really tried anything with oil or wax pastels.
today is my birthday . Gorgeous !!!!!!! is matboard too smooth for colored pencils or any type of pastel?
It's great for watercolor pencils. It can take oil pastel and thinner layers if soft pastel.
Yet another beautiful piece of art and wonderful tutorial -- yet another art medium I have to try! I don't plan on rushing out right away for the Caran Dache, but I think I'm going to try with my oil pastels. This is just lovely! Thank you Lindsay!!!!
I am looking forward to this afternoon when I can go to Critique Club and try this! Thanks so much for all the wonderful tips and suggestions on how to use these crayons!. Your poppy is beautiful! Thank you so very much Lindsay. I really appreciate your advice!
What colors were used? I don’t seem to have them in my set of 40 and want to get them open stock. Thank you in advance ❤
Honestly I mix a lot of the colors as I go. If you have the 40 set you should be able to layer and mix to get everything you need:)
I got myself a set after an artist reccomended them. Love them too. I tried my hand at first with mungyo aquarelle oil pastels . Thick and bright and more affordable. Love my watercolor crayons. !
So glad you did this vid. Wanted it when I saw your last SatChat 😊 so thank you! Picked up open stock at my Tampa Blick store (basic warm/cool RYBG & white) about a month ago, then watched every YT I could find on them. I've used them a bunch and love them. For the direct brush to crayon I use the flat end so as to not mess up the pointy end 😁. Also found they are awesome for splatter -flicking.
Good tip on brush moisture and type!!! Found the wrong way before I saw your vid LOL.
Your Art is Simply Beautiful 🎉❤ can you recommend a pigment white marker that I can use for outline black pigment too.
I use an uniball signor when helping or a white postcard marker. For black kids you can do a micron or posca
I love how soft your poppy came out, it looks so lovely. I think I have a small set of these tucked away somewhere. I think I got them at one point to use for backgrounds in colored pencil pieces. I'm going to have to pull these out and play with them now :)
Can you put colored pencil over these?
@@jackiegarroutte8970 you should be able to put colored pencils over these but you could not put these over colored pencils as they are wax or oil based and these are water based 😃
LOVE this painting!! I have the 40 set as well, I bought it last year on a site kind of like Craigslist, SEALED for about $45. I was beyond excited, and I would've happily paid double they're so good! (Plus I know they usually go for well over $100) They're also amazing because they last for an amazingly long.
Ps. thank you for your advice with the arteza colored pencils with breakage, I really appreciate it and will definitely try it out! ❤❤❤
Wow! Such beautiful work as always. I have the 40 set of the Neocolor ii and have only used them a couple of times for coloring page backgrounds. Which turned out awesome but I'm happy to learn that you have several tutorials using them. I've been subscribed to your Critique club since the beginning and I love it even though I have only painted one of the projects. There is just so much content available now that I forget about it. I'm heading there now to see what I have missed.
Awesome!
Thank you. I love your poppy. Your tips will be very useful when I next try to use my Neocolour ll pastels. I had a go a few months ago but the artwork i made with them came out lumpy. I thought they might have been a bit old, or else working with my paper on my lap could have been the problem. I put them away for now. I got frustrated and did only one layer. Currently I'm waiting to get my new art table so I can sit properly and do my art work. Hopefully it'll be here next week. So discovering some more info about brushes, water use and layering will all help greatly. And I have quite a collection of photos of poppies I took a couple of years ago so I might even try a poppy. Thank you.
This is a big ask, but is there any way you can list the colors you used? The number would be fine, you don’t have to type out the whole name. ❤️❤️❤️
I listed them in Critique club, I'll try to remember to copy them over when I get on my computer later today:)

Thanks Lindsay,
That's it! I'm moving to Maine So I can be near a marden's! Gorgeous drawing and painting, Lindsay. I really do love it. Thank you so much.
Hi Lindsay, don't do anything like that, I just wanted to say, that painting is beautiful. Wow, it is stunning. Nice watching, even if I don't paint
Absolutely beautiful work! These crayons are so amazing. I have a very small set so not much to work with. I have used them for backgrounds, but really wish I had more colors. I have had them on my Amazon wishlist for such a long time waiting for a price drop.
Also check blick, Jerry's and cheap joes because sometimes they are lower or you can build a set open stock over time. Merri artst is also a good spot to check!
@@thefrugalcrafter I checked the open stock prices and it’s much cheaper to just purchase the big set. I will be keeping an eye out. They aren’t on sale anywhere at the moment. I remember you talking about the great deal you got on a set a while ago in another video. I was so jealous!! 😂
I'm so super happy to see this video!!! I love the idea of this medium but hadn't seen it used! Now I'm so excited!!! Thank you so much for sharing this Lindsey!!! Happy crafty hugs!
I'm impressed. You did a beautiful painting with these colors, i never knew before. Now I've a new wish on my purchase list. Thanks very much. 🥰
I'll take all the Poppys I can get; that's what I call my GrandDad :) I really like this one
Oh Lindsay...... I love your enthusiasm (and your are work). Watching you produce beautiful art and giving all the hints and tips along the way - just fantastic. Currently there is not room in my craft room for more art supplies, so it's highly unlikely I'll ever give this a go. But never say never....! Thank you for sharing.
Question. How do you seal this? I'm trying these out and am always interested in the finishing process of art mediums. Helps me decide how I can use someting. :)
I don't. I may and frame under glass. Treat it like any work on paper.
Oh my goodness. Love watching your tutorials. Thank you for sharing your vast amount of knowledge. I always learn something new when I watch your videos. ❤️
Absolutely beautiful, Lindsay! I haven’t seen watercolor crayons before.
I love listening to your tutorials while I'm working. Makes my day better. Thanks for the tips on alcohol markers. I'm just beginning to use markers so this was right on target for me.
Thank you for this- I never heard of these! Lol I use standard pastels. Gray information as always!❤️
I would spray them with a fixative... like I do on my oil pastels, which really don't dry without help.
I love your poppy paintings! I need to pull out my watercolor crayons too. Thanks Lindsay!
This is so beautiful and all of the info you gave was something I couldn’t find when I had my Neo II’s. I do have the Jane Davenport color sticks. I may try those. This finished poppy is so vibrant. I love your channel!
Those should work!
what a glorious flower😍 and neocolors at their best! I love these crayons, but I have not yet seen such a pleasing example as yours, thank you for demonstrating!
Ok I’ve never seen these used like this and now the price tag makes way more sense. Wonderful video thanks for sharing❤
You are so welcome!
I have literally spent the entire week deciding if I really neeeeeeed the 84 set... my little set has been very welll loved. This is my sign 😂🙃
I'm just starting to play around with these and also with oil pastels. This was a beautiful project! Thanks for the inspiration.
these are pricey but I want them should I buy them anyway? 😆
I would love it, Lindsay, if you would do a segment on FRAMING art work!! You mentored you used to do framing. I'm an amateur artist who knows nothing about framing, choosing painting size, does my watercolour need an edge if I'm framing it? I don't want to spend a lot of money to frame things for family, but any basics, pointers, advice or tips would be so appreciated!! I really feel this area is holding me back from doing more with my art, or even choosing a picture size. Thank you. I love your videos!!

@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you! You are the BEST!! ❤❤❤
I love your poppy, Lindsay! Thanks for sharing!
It's fun to watch the poppy develop into such a beauty. Can't imagine achieving anything even close, but do enjoy seeing it happen.
This is so beautiful! I'm joining your monthly club! I'm hoping you can help me out with watercolor, I don't know why I'm struggling with it but I am. Thank you for all your help and encouragements! God Bless
I'll sure try!
Hi Lindsay! Do these play nice with other water soluble things or is it best to use them by themselves? I would think they would be good for backgrounds and underpaintings. Can you add pastel on top or do fine fine details with pencils. Sorry if you covered that and I missed it. :) I just got a small set that was discounted. Had no clue what they could do but the name and price seemed good for trying...aka couldn't resist grabbing them.
They are goon on their own and on top of watercolor and you can use gouache on top of the crayon. It's hard to get pencil to stick over these but a wet watercolor pencil can sharpen edges.
Thank you :)
Very helpful video, but I don't think you took a breath once. After a while, it wore me out! 😅
This is so pretty!! I love the texture in the petals and I think that's easier to achieve with the watercolor crayons than watercolor paint. I"ll try this out.
Do you have to wait in between the layers for the previous one to dry? Also thank you for this I never thought about using them thicker I’ve got about 15 of the marabu crayons sitting in my drawer staring at me like use me up but I just can’t stand how transparent they are sometimes and I want to use them for more then just a mixed media background so definitely going to try this! I was using way to much water lol I want the caran dache crayons so bad but I’ve got so many of the marabu I wanna use them up first I know your feeling on them lol I’ve collected them over the past year through art subscription boxes 🙄 they seemed to come in all the boxes I subscribe to in the past few months.
Yes, use them! They are Very similar to the portfolio oil pastels. You might want to pick up a white caran cache crayon or have some white gouache handy if you need it for opacity.
I ordered the etchr slate mini after your video and I saw we could order one at a time of these. I got 5 to try out. Thanks for the video!
Great tutorial! Would love to see more with the neocolors.
This is a wonderful demo for watercolor crayons. How would you mix a color from several colors? For example, I don't have the yellow ochre crayon, so I try to mix yellow with a touch of red and blue. But I have trouble making the final color (ochre) even.
I take a rough surface like a piece of marking tape or plastic cutting board and rub a bunch of color on it an mix it. I think brown, white and a bit if yellow might hit the yellow ochre color better.
So pretty! Were you saying you can use GOUACHE with these? Is that under or over the watercolor crayons?
I think she meant afterwards, to add some deeper color and contrast. Using the crayons on top of gouache probably wouldn't be the best idea, because the gouache would activate along with the crayons once you went in there with a wet brush. But I have never tried it, so who knows, maybe I am wrong and it works both ways. But putting gouache on top, yes, that will 100% work, been there, done that, it's just like putting gouache on top of regular watercolor.
Yes, gouache on to as it will bond with the crayons. If you use crayon on top from the stick it will scrape off the gouachebut you can apply crayon with a brush( pick up crayon with a brush from the tip) and apply it over gouache. I typically finish up with gouache if needed. I have a still like with an aloha pepper done on crayons and gouache on my channel.
@@thefrugalcrafter ok thank you!!
Just curious as to why the RUSH? I am RUclips newbie. Just talking and drawing so quickly puzzles me.
Long videos don't do well on RUclips but I have a real time lesson for this in Critique Club, link in the video description.
Thank you! I love my Neocolour II but couldn’t always get the results I wanted. Your tips about water and brushes make all the difference! Now I understand what I was doing wrong 😁
Hey! I'm new to Caren D'ache II & really appreciate your pointers! Thanks so much! 👍😊✨
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you….for your demonstration I really learnt a lot from it I really Caran D’Ache Neocolour 11, on toned surfaces
Glad it was helpful!
Hi! I have Crayola crayons and cheap oil pastel crayons. The Neo Crayons you are using are expensive for me. I will use what I have. I do have color pencils that are water color. U give me many ideas. 😊
Sounds great!
Hi Beautiful ,loving the colours . Can I ask is mat board archival . Thank you 🤩
Yes, if you buy archival matboard. There are different grades.
i have the larger set, and I too rarely use them but, They are great for taking to a museum. Here in NYC, you can't take liquid, or watercolors, or inks, into the museum, but crayons, they are permitted. Draw at an exhibit and activate later.
Nice!
Beautiful painting process. Thoroughly enjoyed. A very new medium for me. Will definitely give it a try. Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful day
Looks like a really fun medium. Do you seal this product with a spray varnish? Is this product light fast?
I don't seal it. I may and frame under glass. I suspect the lightfast ratings are good as they are made by caran. D'ache and they sell very lightfast products. I've had work with these hanging a long time with no fading. I have a course all about watercolor crayons coming out next month on Lindsayweirich.teachable.com
That was gorgeus, the way colors blend is lovely, thanks for the knowledge you share. I 'm going to try the mungyo watercolor crayons, dont know if those are good because there are not many reviews on Amazon.
They are decent but not as sift and opaque as the neo2
Very beautiful! 🌸 I tried to build up layers, too. But it doesn’t work?! Although using a small amount of water…Lower layers are dissolved by water
Every layer needs less water. Your brush is barely wet. Make sure to use lots of crayon.
@@thefrugalcrafter thank you, very helpful 👍🏻
What is the pro/con of using either a mat paper or watercolor block paper? Also can the canson sand grain be used? Would it be inappropriate to use watercolor brush with the riugher paper?
It's a preference. Use what you like! Rough paper can dull brushes if they are small but otherwise they should be fine
This was a fantastic video. VERY helpful! Can’t really find much online about them. I’ve bought the 84 set.
Wow beautiful! You are good artist!! Amazing with his luminous colors! I've never used these pastels, maybe, because I don't like this type of pastels!!! But I noticed the results is very good!!! 👍👍☺️☺️☺️
Wow! I'm impressed. The amount of pigment layering with wax watercolor crayons is amazing. Very pretty pretty.
Oh Man I love Neo 11 so much.. I'll be saving up for those for sure!! That's so cool how you shaved the neo 11 an just added water. That is just brilliant!! Thank you for all the tips in this video!! So much fun to try new things with my neo 1's the non-souable crayons with maybe my Gamsol. To set it down to get a wet effect?? Something to try. I have a new mixed media paper from Arteza I got a 3pk for like $23.00. Yes maybe lyra may be a great alternative 🥰🥰🥰💖👍
I have the 30 set of neocolor and embarrassingly I havent played with them much....I need to pull them out and do some mixed media pieces!!! Thanks for the inspiration!! Beautiful flower!!! Thanks for sharing♥️
You have any link where to get them cheaper than Amazon . They’re selling 80 color for $137.
Thank you🥰🥰🥰
Try blick
Thank you !
Exactly what I was looking for! Love how informative you are! Thanks so much! 💝👏🏵
This is wonderful, a lot of learning. Thank you so much. For sure, I had to put big donkey ears up to understand your lovely Sprache flow. It is so fast, as well as the drawing. Thank you anyway ❤
Pretty folds. Lovely. I have a set of 8 or 10. Played with them 3 or4 times. Kind of like my lipstick tube things. Never created anything but smooshing backgrounds. I’ll have to check out your card paintings see if I can do anything that way.
A stamp shop offered the 48 pack of Lyra and waterbrushes years back and it was how I started my watercolor journey. I bought the 40 set of Neocolor II. Compared to the Lyra I agree quality wise, the Lyra have colors more suitable to landscape painting while the 40 pack of Neocolor has a good selection for coloring in stamped images of all kind. I treated myself to the 84 pack during a sale but then I started with „real“ watercolor so the big pack got a new home. But I have to join the „should them use more“ club 🤣
A great way to use them is to scribble then on a ceramic plate and use them this way. Caran d ache also makes a special palette, luckily I found a cheap no name version in an art shop.
That’s Beautiful! I’ve been using too much water. Definitely. Thanks so much for this tutorial and the reminder.
I've never seen a tutorial or demonstration video about carand'ache Neocolor! wow! they look so spectacular! it's amazing how they are pigmented, being watercolor! The truth is that I would love to have them. I never imagined they would be like this! I loved them! Thank you for this video!🥰👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Lindsay. I got tge Caran D'ache set of 10 when I saw a great deal. I fell in love with them now I would like more! Champagne taste on a beer budget.😆💜
Absolute,y beautiful. I love my Neocolor I's but never use my II's. This is the best motivator for me to open up my tin. Unfortunately my poppy won’t look much like yours, but I gotta try anyway. Thanks for this tutorial.
I bought the 84 set last month. Excited to try this project on flower reference. Thank you.
So beautiful Lindsay! What a pleasure to watch! Seeing the building the layers is just amazing! Still haven't gotten the Caran D'ache...but fingers crossed! Do have the Portfolios though! So may give that a try! Thank you so much! Can't wait to watch in Critique Club! 🥰
This was so interesting... I enjoyed seeing you use the Neocolor 2 crayons but all the while I was having a hard time with the color selection because I had never seen even a photo of a poppy being anything but the normal red-orange color. I googled it to find a couple of images of other colors to verify so to speak that it was real as opposed to artistic interpretation LOL ... TFS and have a great day! =)
They make amazing face paint, too! (I wouldn’t do it all the time, and pull out the one or two toxic ones). I dip the end in water, catch any drip, then paint away!
My goodness that’s gorgeous. I just can’t buy any thing else though I just can’t! Plus I’d have to learn how to use them! LOL
Wow~!! So beautiful🥰🥰I enjoyed your video.💕
Beautiful colours. Very pretty flower. Thanks Lindsay.
love how you demo'ed this. I am used to drawing with graphite and painting w/watercolour and was sort of bored of WC. do not like acrylics and was totally attracted to oils but don't want to deal with chemicals and long drying times. the neocolor ii looks like a great compromise.
Beautiful, thank you. A light box is excellent to copy directly.
I love art supplies and have wanted these for a while but don’t use my WC if inktense pencils hardly ever so I can’t justify getting these yet 😅
