Just a little tip for you. If I have to seal something ( which I seldom do, I like the smearing like you do) I don’t have the patience to dap the gloss medium on with a brush. I take my gelli plate and roll a thin layer of mate medium on and put my piece on the gelli plate, like you would do a normal pull. You can also take your wet brush and damp it on the crayon and then paint, it gets very watercolour likely.
That is a great tip, thank you! I'll have to try that. I only use Neocolor quite sparingly, so the dabbing method is not too bad 😉. But I am grateful for any timesavers
Adding that if you want to paint with them like watercolors, it helps to use a palette, especially for mixing when you don't want the residual marks to show.
That's a great tip, thank you! I haven't tried to work with them in that way yet, but it would make a fantastic portable alternative to taking watercolour.
I have just watched 2 of your videos on using dry media - soft pastels and neo II. You are excellent at these tutorials - very thorough and pleasant to learn from. A lot of work, for us to appreciate. Thank you Jeannine.
I recently discovered that the Karin Decobrush Pigment brush pens work really well with the neocolor II. I wouldn’t have expected it but they are amazing together for mixed media art.
Oh these are amazing, it’s been a year or more I want to try them out, so there you go, that got me, I am ordering these babies this week end! Oh and also, I really enjoy your videos! I discovered your channel a week ago or so and have watch them ALL, like a “J.Closethon” 😅 they are soothing and inspiring, so thank you! 😊
Brilliant. Ive beeen thinking of getting some to try, so its great to see how they turn out, thank you. What a super gift, thoughtful husband. ❤ lm lucky to have some wooden boxes of derwent crayons, which contain all their colours. They would be buckets of £'s today........Alioban 😊
The sets are so beautiful to look at, I still tend to go back to the same kind of colours though. Nice to know the other colours are there when I need them!
I use pastel fixative by winsor and Newton. Probably not the right thing to use but it’s worked /my paintings don’t transfer. I haven’t tried resetting them though
Hi Jeannine, It's a nice video to have a look at how different artists use the same materials, I do use them as you sometimes, I only have a couple of Caran d’Ache Aquarelles but maybe I will collect some different tones soon, they make me happy when I use them over rough cotton paper as they give me a bold texture that I can soften them later or lapping them over wet papers over other aquarelles, fun. I have subscribed to follow your journey greatings from another RUclipsr and artist 😍🇳🇱🖌🖍
I love these too! Did you know on the inside of the card sleeve around the tin there are named squares to swatch all the colours, they are quite small. I love yours❤
So much depends on the paper you use. This sketchbook is on the cheaper side and soaks up the paint a lot. It's worth testing a few papers if you have options.
@@jclosestudioThank you! That seems like such an important point. I was wondering because in a video that I watched yesterday there wasn’t any line left…paper makes sense!😊😊
A question about the finish on the paper after adding the gloss medium… does the finished piece have shiny and matte areas? Have you ever sealed with just matte medium? Is there a special reason that you choose to use the gloss? TYSM! Very informative video!!😊😊😊
@@donnacarraway9182 Thanks, Donna! I use gloss medium because it's slightly clearer than matt medium. To make matt medium matt they add little particles, so the colours don't show up as vibrant after matt medium. But in my sketchbook I use either, I don't mind if parts are shiny and others are not there. On finished paintings I add a satin varnish at the end, so everything will be the same sheen, even if some areas were more matt and some more glossy. Hope this helps, let me know if it's unclear!
I love this video of urs. Recently found ur work and i have been also obsessed about the neocolor of late ❤ i used it for some abstract forest landscapes
I find the blending outlines is dependent on the paper used z. Cheap plus papers grab and hold the pigment and don’t move with water application. Higher grade papers seem not to grab with will sustain some intense scrubbing. Ooh you’ve reminded me that I used to dip my Neocolor in water, and it makes lovely creamy lines. Completely forgot about that. Thanks for reminding me!

Thank you so much, Ann! What a lovely comment. Have a great weekend!
Thank you Jeannine for showing akl the various ways of using these. Now that I finally have my first purchase and own 6, I can start playing 😃🤩
Wonderful! let me know how you get on with them 😊
Hello, I use a thin layer of Dorland’s medium on top of my finished pages. It makes the pages waterproof.
Good idea! How do you apply it? Does it not smush the crayon?
@@jclosestudio It has never smudged the crayon, watercolor or gouache I applied it to. It takes just a very thin layer and I apply with my fingers.
Great, thanks! Need to give that a try. @@sarahbradley1653
I have Caran d’ache tin envy !
Don't, I still mostly use the single colours I bought first 😂
I have just purchased the 40 set neo 2, have to say I am delighted with the colour range.
That's so exciting, enjoy experimenting with them!
I’m going for the 30 set but looked at the 40 set too because I love having options

Interesting! Yes, you can really mix any wet media with them. There is a possibility that the wax will clog up your nibs.
Great Video Jeanine, thanks.
I also use mat gel medium, ( a very soft flow paste), as my water so when it smears it also seals it.
Great tip! I have some acrylic flow medium that's similar to air brush medium, so very fluid. Need to give that a try.
Thank you for this video!😊
You are most welcome!
This is literally the exact video I was looking for!
Fantastic, I'm so glad you found it!
Me too!! Thank you @jclosestudio

Yes, I love that they include that! Just a bit small for the video 😊
Your sketchbook paper really holds the line of the neocolor II mark compared to the wash that I get when I apply water to my neocolor II.

How can they be made of oil and be water soluble? I'm guessing it's just a "creamy" water medium?
Hi Anlo! They still leave a mark when you dissolve them, which I think is the wax. They are oil based.
@@jclosestudioAwesome! Thanks! I did a little research and learned that oil and wax can actually mix with water through emulsification!
