    The painting turned out amazing :) Neocolor II are my absolute favorite medium for realism studies. I find them much easier to control than watercolor, and being able to put strong highlights in later on helps too. They're also my secret weapon for fixing failed watercolor paintings! I'm always pleasantly surprised by how much of a difference a single layer of pastels can make.

    Caran-D'ache NEOCOLOR II is water-soluble "wax" pastel, Caran-D'ache NEOPASTEL is the "oil" pastel (not water-soluble). It can be confusing for beginners when buying this product. I started with NEOPASTEL but after using NEOCOLOR II it became my favorite.
    Your Lord Voldemort looks beautiful !

      Thank you 🙂 I also find their names super confusing, it's easy to get mixed up! On their site and RUclips channel they label Neocolor 2 as wax oil pastels so I figured I better go with their description. I hope they can clarify this for me for future videos.

      @@paintingandchocolate I live in Switzerland and I will call Caran D'ache to ask them an explanation about the word "oil" on the NEOCOLOR II video. I think their video's title was a mistake bc in the video's introduction and on the end of it they don't mention "oil", neither in the tin nor in the crayon itself.
      I have NEOCOLOR I, (wax resistant) NEOCOLOR II (watercolor) and NEOPASTEL which's the only one oil base.
      I'll let you know if I get an answer from them.

      @@floralheart thank you, note they have it on their website descriptions of the sets too, I think it's really what they label them, the question is why. I'm thinking the term oil pastel might refer to the crayons fitting more into that category than others in their eyes. I already asked them about something once and didn't get a clear answer but that was by email.

      @@paintingandchocolate Hi, I called Caran D'ache 10 days ago, the attendent asked me to put my request in writing, so I sent an email. I'm still waiting for their reply.
      Hopefully they called a meeting to talk about the subject.

      I will bet that all water soluble crayons like this have BOTH wax and oil in their formula. This is the case with colored pencils, whether they are labeled as wax-based or oil-based; the ones labeled as oil-based have less wax, are harder, and hold a sharp point better than the ones labeled as wax-based. I've noticed Caran Dache makes traditional oil pastels, too, and I realize that also calling them Neocolor is confusing. I wonder if they were originally designed to be used together in mixed media art. I bet the Neocolor II crayons are labeled as water soluble wax oil pastels because they can be blended using a fingertip or blending stump the way oil pastels can...VERY different from regular wax crayons. Anyway, one tip I'd pass on is that if you have both the Neocolor I and II crayons, taking off the wrappers entirely runs the risk of getting the two types mixed up. The paper is tough to peel with your fingernails, but that is why they have the black arrows on the paper. Much easier to peel as you go using the guides this way. Also, some artists reinforce the paper covers by wrapping with washy tape, if they prefer not to accidentally break them up during use.

    The subject is not something I would ever choose to paint, but I definitely enjoyed learning the techniques and advantages and disadvantages of using the Neocolor II water soluble oil pastels. I do have one suggestion, after a viewer invests their time watching the entire process of a painting, it is a little disappointing when we don't get a good look at the finished painting once it is complete, the tape is removed, and it is dried. That is sort of the "pay-off" moment, when we get judge how we think the painting turned out. And as you are so talented, it is usually the moment when we get to admire the beauty of what you have created. So, I would recommend that you save or add a few seconds at the end of your videos, to allow us to get a good look at the finished painting. Thank you, I have really enjoyed your channel.

    Great job, as an FYI you can use a dollar store cutting board for a makeshift palette for neopastel II instead of using scrap paper or caran d' ache makes a palette for them :) it is plastic and smooth on one side and a bit rough on the other to grab the pigment so you can wet it and then paint with it

      Thank you for this valuable information! In my attempt with other similar products (showcased at the beginning of the video in a reel I did of the arch painting), i used a ceramic mixing tray and i liked it. I think I will go back to it with future paintings although your suggestion is great and much better for larger paintings when you need something larger to mix on. My palette is small.
      As to paper, I noticed I'm liking lately to get rid of scrap pieces(or papers I really dislike) through this medium and watercolor pencils.

    Hereby i would like to share the way that I using the Neocolor II. Indeed I am an absolute a Necolor II lover. Indeed, I am using a paper for marker and print my own drawing done previously, then I am using marker of all kinds and using my Neocolor in dryness way, and waxing my painting with Kleenex and finishing my artworks with Museums watercolour dry and waxing again my drawing with a Kleenex then! I had never seen this hack anywhere! Hope you might enjoy this technique with Neocolor II! 😊❤,From Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦.

    Sine you like to make swatches you could try the Caran d’Ache palette Aquarelle. It’s meant to make swatches and since it’s plastic the pigment won’t soak in and more can be used. Can be used with neo colors, watercolor pencils, and other things.

    This turned out so well! I was surprised that these colors could be lifted for highlights. I thought they would stain the paper more. I have a set and want to explore them since I've only used them a couple times. Thanks! No, I didn't recognize the character... I'm the only person on earth who has only watched one HP film and didn't read the books. BTW, how you manage to find time for art with four kids at home seems miraculous to me!

It's okay about the character, my husband is the same and I know others too 🙂 It's a bit tough with kids being on vacation (I scan for background noises in my videos lately in case) but I am very lucky one of them is 15 and helps a ton (the other 3 are small).

    • @paintingandchocolate
      @paintingandchocolate  Год назад +1

      With this one not much except towards the end of the video where I used more (it was my way to warm up to the medium). Otherwise even used as watercolor these are very convenient to carry and you don't need a ton of water.

    • @NelaDunato

      Many of the Neocolor II pastels are opaque (depending on the color), so layering them becomes more similar to gouache than watercolor. But personally I'd rather use basic watercolor for early washes, and pile on thick layers of pastel on top of it.

    • @paintingandchocolate
      @paintingandchocolate  11 месяцев назад

      You're welcome. I don't knlw honestly, I would imagine the varnish that work for watercolor would here too since the pigment has set into the paper after being wet, like any watercolor painting (it's not like oil pastels that can never be sealed and will smear a bit).

It never occurred to me to use them like watercolors 🤦‍♀. This picture has inspired me to dig them out and give them another go.
    Have you tried these with watercolors or watercolor pencils? I've head they are compatible, but was curious if the Neocolor II changed the way you paint when used with other water soluble paints/pencils.
