I wish I could send pictures, but going off your video, I changed the dimensions and made a cozy for my French white Corning ware that do not have handles. It has been a problem every year trying to pass those dishes. But now I made an oversized cozy for the oval bowl it works even if it is coming out of the oven. Thank you so much! I really appreciated this video. You are a great teacher!
This method is much easier than the pattern I tried. I do agree with the comments about the camera work because so much of your work was off-camera or partially hidden. Your hand also hid most of the seam clipping you were doing. Details are crucial when you’re teaching. Just a note about the batting you’re using: there are cotton batting products made especially for microwaving and they come with very specific handling instructions. It’s a good idea to review a film before posting.
New to your channel and I want to thank you for the tutorial. I have wanted to make some but wasn’t sure about the measurements for the darts and your video made it easy to make. Thank you! 🥰
Thank u for the excellent explanation. I've made some cosies but haven't been happy with them due to bulk. I will try your way as u do it slightly differently 😊.
Wanted to make some more of these great cozies but had misplaced measurements. Great tutorial but was unable to see you while marking. Ty! Look forward to watching more things you do!
I am so sorry about that. I did create a new video that shows how to mark the darts. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/zMnKG5xLn-w/видео.htmlsi=2qNx7-Iq6VYgKiMN
Thank you for the wrap and zap product I never knew there was such a thing. Thank you for tutorials. I know filming isnt easy and other things well done
Thanks for your content Pam. I appreciate your hard work and effort in doing all this! Was just back in MI in mid-October for a couple weeks....and a quick trip up to Marquette for the weekend! Have a great Holiday Season! =)
Very helpful video and you have shown me some things I had not been doing but will start now. I use Wrap and Zap batting and sometimes it seems to be too bulky. Any suggestions for another type of batting. I'm not an expert seamstress - pretty much self taught and by watching videos.. Your suggestion for beginning turning this from the opposite corner works really well. Thank you for demonstrating this cozy!
You are so welcome! You can make this cozy with only one layer of batting. That should help with the bulkiness. There are a couple other microwave safe batting brands online. In fact, you can even by some that are pre-cut specifically for use with bowl cozies.
Hi, what kind of sewing machine do you use? I am very new to sewing machines and looking into purchasing one. So far, i know i just need one that can handle layers of fabric. I am looking at a Brother, which only does a straight stitch, which is really all i think i care about. What do you think?
I'm so sorry that I am just now seeing your comment. So I apologize for the delay in replying. I use a Janome 8200 QCP Memory Craft. I previously used a Brother HC1850. The type of machine you purchase is dependent upon the type of sewing you plan to do. You could visit a quilt shop and talk to someone about your sewing plans and they can give you some great recommendations. Even if you don't buy a machine from them, they are a great resource. So, a machine that only does a straight stitch, does one thing really well - sew a straight stitch. You won't be able to sew a zig zag stitch which is great for finishing seams, sewing knit or stretch fabrics or making buttonholes. I hope this helps!
I think it adds an extra row that helps to secure the cotton batting in place and it helps the edge to lay flatter. Plus, I think it gives it a more polished look - personal preference.
By “backing” are you talking about the cotton batting? If so, you can cut the batting slightly smaller than the fabric. This helps to reduce bulk in the seams. If you do cut your batting smaller, be sure to do the two rows of topstitching after turn the fabric right side out. This topstitching will not only close the opening but help to keep the batting in place.
I cut the batting slightly smaller than the fabric. So, that helps to reduce the bulk. I have made cozies with rounded corners. Haven't decided if I like them more or not. Here's the pros and cons, in my opinion. Pro squared corners: The squared corners give you more to hold onto when lifting the bowl filled cozy out of the microwave. Con squared corners: The corners tend to get in the way when you are using the cozy. For example when you ladle soup into a bowl. Really, it's just a matter of personal preference. So, try it with the rounded corners and let me know what you think!
Did you fail to tell us that you cut the batting a quarter inch smaller than the fabric. So it cuts down on the bulk. I notice you did that but didn’t mention. Thanks for the tutorial 😊
No. I mention the fabric and batting cutting requirements at about the 2:15 mark in the video. The fabric cuts are also included in the video description: ✂️ SUPPLIES NEEDED (2) 10-1/2" squares of cotton fabric (2) 10" squares of cotton batting cotton thread (also use cotton thread in bobbin)
Yes. That is what I do as well. This secures the batting to the fabric and keeps it from shifting. You can see at 4:10 in the video that I draw the diagonal (corner to corner) stitching lines and stitch basically an X using cotton thread. Thanks for pointing this out! Pam Baker Hooked on Sewing
Yes, I just saw a comment on another video and the poster said its not as thick, just use an additional layer. 100 percent cotton is always a must. And they dry faster.
Thanks for the feedback. I actually created an updated video that addresses this issue. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/zMnKG5xLn-w/видео.htmlsi=5mjRPDiHObOq8fz7
That’s a good question. The bowls I use are 5” wide at the base and about 6-1/4” at the top. They are also about 2-1/4” high (measured from the flat surface of the table to the rim of the bowl). Basically the bottom of the cozy should measure at least as wide as the base of the bowl. To determine this, measure from the bottom of the dart across to the bottom of the opposite dart. And then you want the sides of the cozy to be high enough so that it comes up the side of your bowl. My finished darts are about 2” high. So 6-1/2 + 2 + 2 = 10-1/2”. That is the total width of my cozy at the darts. From corner to corner the cozy measures 12”. My bowl’s total measurements are 5 + 2-1/2 + 2-1/2 = 10”. Does this make sense? Say your bowl has a 7” base. You would want your cozy to be at least 7” between darts and the sides to be high enough to cover the side of the bowl. If my sides are 3” high, then I will need to make a cozy that is at 14” wide. I came to this conclusion based on 7” for base, 6” for the sides (3+3), 1” for seam allowances. I hope this helps!
That's interesting. The recommendations from the manufacturer have changed through the years and also varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. I try to stay on top of this, but things change. ALWAYS BE SURE TO READ AND FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS. The latest (as of 11/13/2024) printed instructions from the Pellon brand of Wrap-N-Zap states: "We suggest cooking in 1 minute intervals for a maximum of 8 minutes. Never leave the microwave unattended. Do not use in a Convection/Microwave oven." Hope this helps!!
That’s a good question! The cozy should be used in the microwave with 2 minute increments. Pellon recommends 1 minute increments, with a maximum of 8 minutes.

Do you wash your fabric before you cut it yo make these bowl cozys?
I typically don’t wash the bowl cozy fabric first because I don’t pre wash the cotton batting.
What is the benefits of the second roll of stitching?
I think it adds an extra row that helps to secure the cotton batting in place and it helps the edge to lay flatter. Plus, I think it gives it a more polished look - personal preference.
Would cutting the backing smaller than the fabric make it easier to sew? Don’t have a walking foot would make it easier too but I don’t have one lol
By “backing” are you talking about the cotton batting? If so, you can cut the batting slightly smaller than the fabric. This helps to reduce bulk in the seams. Could you use cotton flannel instead of batting?
Yes, I just saw a comment on another video and the poster said its not as thick, just use an additional layer. 100 percent cotton is always a must. And they dry faster.
I would assume you could so long as it is 100% cotton.
How do you make the one cozy with no large corners?
I take a round object (lid, bowl, or plate) and mark the curve or arch of the corners. I then cut along the curved lines. Hope this helps!!
I have fabric that has been preshrunk. What happens when I wash the cozy that has cotton batting.
I find the batting may shrink a little, but not enough to make a difference. Also, I lay my cozies out to dry instead of drying in the dryer.
your project doesn't show when your marking your darts.
Thanks for the feedback. I actually created an updated video that addresses this issue. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/zMnKG5xLn-w/видео.htmlsi=5mjRPDiHObOq8fz7
How do you measure the fabric for cozy to fit the bowl?
That’s a good question. The bowls I use are 5” wide at the base and about 6-1/4” at the top. They are also about 2-1/4” high (measured from the flat surface of the table to the rim of the bowl).

Can you use just one side with batting?
Yes, you can!
The batting states it’s only safe to use for 20 seconds at a time in microwave.
The latest (as of 11/13/2024) printed instructions from the Pellon brand of Wrap-N-Zap states:

For how long should be put in the microwave?
Not more then 2 minutes.i know someone thaw set her microwave on fire
That’s a good question! The cozy should be used in the microwave with 2 minute increments. Pellon recommends 1 minute increments, with a maximum of 8 minutes.
First part? I know why I need one.
That’s great!!
What machine do you have?
I sew on a Janome Horizon Memory Craft 8200 QCP sewing machine.
How much do you sell them for?
I do not sell them. Sorry.
Can't see you marking darts.........camera not showing anything
Please refer to my updated video…
ruclips.net/video/zMnKG5xLn-w/видео.htmlsi=XXyloDRiKPfWaSu9
do you wash your fabric before cutting?
Yes, I do! If the item I am sewing is going to be used and washed a lot, then I like to wash and dry it first to minimize shrinkage.
😊
Thanks for leaving a comment!!
I cant see what you are marking
So sorry about that. I did make a new video. ruclips.net/video/zMnKG5xLn-w/видео.htmlsi=sC_zyyjbIoAsn-le
You-set your stitch to 3 mm? Why so tiny?
Actually, I use anywhere between 3-4 for my topstitching. Which is a long stitch. This stitch length lays better on top of the fabric.
You have the camera in the wrong position 😂
