Thank you for this video. Your nails were mesmerizing while you were quilting in your demonstration. I'll look for those rulers and templates. I've been making these for years now, " the old fashioned way". Thank you again .🪡
Before microwaving in the kitchen we used a gas or electric oven. I made some cookies that required alcohol so i grabbed my dad’s expensive whiskey. It blew open the oven door and a huge flame shot out and then the door closed and the oven continued working, best cookies ever.
I am so glad to see you struggle to cut through the four layers of batting and fabrics. I thought I was the only one to find it so hard. I also topstitched around the top edge twice just an 1/8th or so apart. When you wash these place a bowl inside the cozy so it will easily be reshaped into bowl.
thanx for the warnings. first time i heard them. btw, i love your quilts, again the tips are great. just learning quilting. God bless you and your family.
I love bowl cozies! ❤ Thanks, Christen for reigniting my obsession for sewing this fun project. I'm going to use my novelty fabric fat quarters, like the Maruchen ramen and Batman ones. ✂️👍🏼
I use an afghan hook to push out the seams like where you sew the lining and outer together. I push out the edges and pin as you go and you get a really nice edge without having to keep rolling it with your fingers. That hook will work on corners too. Used that method for years. The hook won't poke through the fabric and it can reach places your fingers can't. About a size 10 and a size 7. I keep it right at the machine. I use them on my handbags too. Hardly ever used them on yarn.😊
@@ISeeStarsQuilting Been sewing 65 years and still learning. That little trick is something I found by accident while making one of my daughters a prom dress.
Don't need a template. I made lots of these and gave them as gifts and stocking stuffers. I also made some smaller ones for little hands to put their ice cream bowl in. Can be used for cold or hot cozies. Bonus that they are washable, reusable.
I was working on some yesterday. Talking & cutting batting. Sliced my finger open. 6 stiches later. From now on I’ll use pre-cut batting or use scissors on the batting. Lesson learned.
Thank you for showing this, I have a template but I've never used it. One Christmas I was going to use it but I had bought some fabric online in Star Wars prints and when it arrived it felt printed, like a t-shirt with that kind of rubbery feel and then I got totally nervous about using it and never got around to them. Now I'm thinking this will be a nice extra thing to give at Christmas this coming year.
Hi,these are a great gift & easy. I've made them with Christmas fabric & filled them with lollies for gifts. I made them with foam batting (?) & made it clear they were not for heat use 🦛🇭🇲🦜
I came back to let you know I ordered the templates for the bowls, I thought so much of your video, I use to have a pattern but it was tossed out by accident when cleaning the sewing area. Thank you again so much for your wonderful video's.
Great tutorial, these seem much easier than I thought they’d be. I think I’d leave the opening on one of the darts because I hate it when an opening is on a curve, especially when they have batting attached. I always make a dog’s dinner out of sewing a curve closed. When my mum got her first microwave I remember heating up a takeaway in a metal container and standing watching the arcs and sparks not knowing what to do. Luckily my mum came in and switched it off. That microwave stank for ages after that.
Cozies are fun to make, but they are not one size fits all, so I just cut a fabric square and use a small bowl to help me round off the corners. I had to make several variations until I discovered what size fabric square I needed to start with and how long to make the darts so that the cozy would fit my dishes. If you use Wrap-No-Zap batting and preshrink it according to package instructions, you can use just one layer of batting. To be safe, I don’t put my cozies in the microwave. You made an engaging video.
They have wrap n zap thats made for microwave and is heat resistant. This is what I use just in case they microwave it. Also heat resistant like pot holders which i also use the wrap n zap batting.
Is double batting really necessary? Would just one do? I cut fabric by making a paper pattern and scissors. Also, batting cut by using a marking pen around plastic template...then cut with scissors. It was easier for me. Thx. Making these for women at church for next mothers day. Cool, huh?
First time viewer here. I enjoyed watching your video and I fell in love with your pin cushion in the mug. I have got to know how you made it, please. I also subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more of your videos. You are a great teacher. 😊
Hi! I’ve made these before, but loved watching you do it! One thing to note is the link for the batting from Amazon is not the same batting you used. The link you provided isn’t 100% cotton so you can’t put it in the microwave.
I am not very familiar with brother machines, but if your needle is having a hard time with the thicker fabric you may want to switch to a stronger one - look for a jean/denim needle. those are tough and can handle the bulk. 🥰
I bought what I thought was 100% cotton batting...when it arrived it was 93% cotton and 7% poly. It's bettern than 80/20. Is it going to be microwave safe? Do you or anyone else know? Thx. I'm doing these for the ladies at church for next mother's day.
It's great that you're making something special for the ladies at church! As for the batting, 93% cotton should be fine for microwave use, but I would make sure you test out one of them before you make several.
You can usually tell by checking the fabric's feel and weight, but if you're unsure, reading the bolt is always a safe bet! Compare the weight and the feel to a fabric you know is 100% cotton
My Pellon Wrap-N-Zap pkg says cotton batting can shrink up to 5%. "To avoid shrinkage prior to use, we suggest you soak the batting in hot water for 20 mins, dry in the dryer on low setting for best results". I can predict that my bowl cozy will get food on it, so I'll be washing it every now & then. Has anyone had their batting shrink if they did not soak prior to sewing ?
did tou know an easier way to put this together is to stiich the two pieces together is to place them right sides out and sew the top edges together using a bias binding, so you don't have to turn them.
Thanks for your idea, I have a thumb that is painful so turning is hard for me, I’m going to make a piece of bias tape for my next one and try your idea.
Thank you for this video. Your nails were mesmerizing while you were quilting in your demonstration. I'll look for those rulers and templates.

You are most welcome, and thank you for the compliment!

I received 3 different size cozies as gifts. I love them. So easy to takes bowls from the microwave without burning your fingers. 😊
😂😂
😂 that made me cackle out loud!
This made me choke on my coffee 🤣🤣🤣

This is also great for ice cream bowls
Yes, wonderful idea! 😍
What a great idea for next year's Mother's Day for the ladies at my church. Thx. Good job as usual.

OH my gracious!!! I am so so sorry, I hope you are okay.
I got this ruler last month and I have been intimidated about using it. I really appreciate how encouraging and thorough this tutorial is. ❤❤❤
You are so welcome, I hope you love it.
I bought a set of the the templates and I also bought precut microwavable batting, enough for 8. Yes, I am lazy, lol. Thanks for the awesome tutorial.
Sounds good to me 😉Have fun!
Great tutorial! Keep making your tutorials you are very good at it. I have been looking for the larger size template. So Thank you
Thank you for the kind words! I’m so glad you found it helpful.

Love the pivot!!
I have made them, they are simple to make and lots of fun to make.
That is so good to hear. 💛

foam batting is a great idea! I have had people ask about stability overtime and foam would be the perfect solution! Thanks for sharing 🤩

aw thank you for letting me know! You're going to have so much fun making the bowls again 🤩

Oh goodness....I'm afraid we probably all have done that once. LOL
Thank you for the video. I ordered the templates and have already made one 😊
Wonderful!
I used a jelly roll, turned out great!!
That is so wonderful to hear! 🥰
I have the AccuQuilt die to cut these. Definitely use Cotton batting!!
Sounds great!

Are two layers of batting really necessary? Would one layer work? I Would appreciate your input...thx
Also some 100% batting have poly scrims. Make sure the scrims are also 100% cotton.
Thanks for sharing this Cathy.

Good to know!
I use cotton batting and wrap and sap batting
I like that she tells about cotton cotton cotton some instructors don’t tell you or impress enough to use cotton and why
Hello, ive never quilted anything and i just found your channel, do you not backstitch the quilted squares or on this bowl cozy?
The stitch length I use is quite small where I'm not worried about it coming undone, but you can back stitch if you feel more comfortable doing so!
Thank you great tutorial. The pens say erasable not heat. Are they the ones you used in the video? You are such a joy to watch. Blessings
They are designed to be erasable on paper but will also disappear with heat from an iron.
Yes they are!
Great for a bowl of ice cream as well
Yes!! And yum!!
Tks for the great video. I have a brother cs7000x can you tell me what size needle do I use? Hard going over the darts.
I am not very familiar with brother machines, but if your needle is having a hard time with the thicker fabric you may want to switch to a stronger one - look for a jean/denim needle. those are tough and can handle the bulk. 🥰
Polyester is mad from oil, yes the same oil gasoline is made from. 🔥💥
Oh yuck!
Most threads are not cotton. Be sure to look for cotton thread. Also be sure cotton batting does not have scrim, which is not cotton.
Thank you for sharing Melodie!
I had to order cotton thread on Amazon 😊
Do you have a pattern for the sewing machine behind you.
I show how to make it on this blog post right here on my website: iseestarsquilting.com/diy-sewing-machine-cover/

I'm going through my stash right now. Does anyone know how to tell if fabric is 100% cotton or do I have to go back to the store to read the bolt? 😮
You can usually tell by checking the fabric's feel and weight, but if you're unsure, reading the bolt is always a safe bet! Compare the weight and the feel to a fabric you know is 100% cotton

I'm not going to bother with soaking it prior to cutting- if nobody had it shrink during washing...fingers crossed !🤞
