    I bought the vapour frame and motorkit last year and built the bike up to a similar spec to Andy's bike.I take it to the local bike park(Cannock Chase) with the E-bike boys.They all ride 250w shimano powered bikes from various manufactures.They are a bit more nimble in the corners but I just leave them for dead on the hills once I get on the throtle its great fun.The motor on the vapour is a little thirsty so I just carry a spare battery 😀😎 i'm usually so far ahead I can swap it out before they can catch up.😂

      I have the smaller 14 amp hour battery which at full power will last about half an hour or 10 miles.So I carry two batteries{one in a pack pack).One to get me to the trails then one to blast around the trails without having battery anxiety.
      Seems to work ok but is a little pricey with the batteries at £500 each.

    I have such a bike frame, but I upgraded it a lot. I made the battery fixing area larger and the 52v 21AH battery was installed.
    It made the cyclone with a security system that was difficult to easily dismantle, and made it with a horn and 12v lights

    they make oil from does yellow plants you see in video, good to keep mud off your bike if you go offroad like that. canoli oil it is. (also cheaper then protect and shine oil/spray) but protects it good to not get mud sticking on the bike, i just seen a video from a mtb guy.

    Hey Andy, been meaning to ask you about this... Have you any experience with the Bafang geared rear hubs? Apparently they offer less resistance when pedaling without the motor. I think they only go up to 750W though? Just wonder how much rolling resistance those bigger hub motors (1500W) that you use have? Is it manageable to pedal when the battery is flat?! Cheers

      I can see a lot of e-bike riders ending up in hospital with power
      assist bikes when travelling at more than 25 MPH. THEN our lazy
      legislators WILL ban E-BIKES or KEEP current ridiculous speed limits.
      Politicians are too lazy to introduce sensible laws for e-bikes.
      E-bikes need a speed limit of about 40 to 45 MPH so they are able to
      keep in the flow of normal motorised traffic flow. ESPECIALLY ON
      HILLS where an e-biker limited power to 15 MPH, is going to be
      reduced to 5 MPH up hills IS going to be in a POTENTIONALLY DANGEROUS
      situation given the impatient, inconsiderate average motorist.
      Motorist are too stupid, too lazy or too fat to use e-bikes for local
      journeys. Politicians and most car drivers are too stupid to realise
      that the e-bikes WILL solve traffic congestion AND traffic pollution.
      THEY HATE CYLISTS ! EVEN THOUGH RIDING A BIKE IS UNCLUTERING THE
      ROADS AND PARKING SPACES.
      Imagine our cities where 90% of us are commuting across town by e-bike or
      e-biking to and from the train station. Trains can be easily adapted
      as necessary. Pollution levels and the gorgeous whether would return
      to the levels we all enjoyed during the Coronavirus lock down.
      Pitifully Obvious - unless you are a dumb politician. E-BIKE REGULATIONS NEED TO BE UPDATED.
      SCREEM, SHOUT and E-MAILS TO JOURNALIST - POLITICIANS AND MOTORIST. (
      ie your mum and dad ) TOXINS from ever increasing motor vehicle use
      are poisoning us and our children. All of us are wasting thousands
      hours of valuable time in unproductive traffic congestion. The e-bike
      - tandem e-bikes - e bike trailers for the kids and shopping is our
      likely salvation !
      E-bikes need regulations if they are to become the most popular form of
      commuter vehicle. Unfortunately Registration plates insurance and
      construction regulations for safety, similar to mop-heads will have
      to be adapted. Hub motors are too unstable at speeds above 30 MPH -
      Mid drive compulsory - Rim brakes wear out rapidly on faster e-bikes and are therefore dangerous
      - disc brakes should be compulsory for e-bikes - Compulsory -e-bike battery
      detachable to prevent theft and for recharging at work
      or destination with employers require by law to facilitate. Lockable
      anti-theft tracker system - compulsory.
      Speed limited by law to 45 MPH but with enough power to maintain that
      speed up most hills. Motorway lanes adapted and progressively widened to provide 45 MPH e-bike and
      e-recumbent bikes/trikes lanes where riders are three or four abreast
      from initially using only the emergency vehicle access lane. Truck
      lane 55 mph and car lanes 70 MPH.
      In Life the sensible are handicapped by the imbeciles. The most common
      accidents on motor bikes occurs when folks pull out in front of an
      approaching motor bike because the driver didn't see the motor bike
      which of course is bigger than an e-bike. I would strongly suggest
      fitting a LED head light which can be set higher in daylight
      preferably with a yellow cover to help the drivers see you
      approaching the junction. Bear in mind older drivers have poorer
      eyesight and much slower reactions. It's not much help being in the
      right if your dead. At night remove the coloured lens cover and lower
      the beam. We all need to scream at our idiot leaders in all countries
      to adjust legislation to make e-bikes more popular. The Laws in the
      UK are ridiculous. Most reasonably fit riders can easily exceed the
      15 MPH limit without power assist but the same rider travelling above
      15 MPH on a e-bike fitted with power assist EVEN if the power assist
      is not being engaged WILL BE BREAKING THE LAW. Failing to registrar
      the bike as a motor vehicle - no registration plate - no insurance -
      no motor vehicle lighting regulations - not wearing a full motor bike
      helmet etc................... Please copy and paste everywhere !

    Hello Andy, you mentioned on your vlog that you stay in the biggest cassette sprocket.
    Just a thought, I think there is an option off having a single speed set-up which would certainly reduce weight and simplify and gain alitte cockpit space.
    Regards Iain

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  4 года назад

      Hi Iain, I mostly stay in the biggest gear yeah but I do occasionally drop down, like when I was on the long stretch in that video I may knock it down a couple to increase speed. It’s nice to have them there, what you could do is separate the cogs and have say 3 and then swap the derailleur for a tensioner and just manually move the chain if you were doing flatter downhill trails for example, you’d save space and a point of failure (derailleur banging on the floor)
      It is nice at the moment though knowing that if the battery runs out you can still just pedal 😯

    Andy, i do like your bikes, but... sometimes i wonder how these parts like the bafang centre drive could work with less high spec bikes... single speed, or even looking back in time to old bombproofs like the sturmey 2 speed kick shift hub... or such parts, on a bike with a front hub motor... just lower spec, cheaper but old school (i'm a fan of old bikes). Also, i'm a bit of an ideas man - You've got a sensorless motor.... why not try to modify it with hall sensors? I think I saw Tom Stanton put sensors in one of his RC airplane motors... just a thought

    Kirbs, I highly doubt you’ve never heard of Maxxis and they’re tyres? Been using them since I was a kid downhill riding on a mongoose bmx frame (fucking painful by the way, 0 suspension besides whatever give you leave in the tyres) have a look at some of the “fat daddy” style treads, I have one set that I’ve had for over 6 years with some serious riding on them with over 50% tread on the rear after using the old shoe foot brake trick for 3 years (brake pads used to be more expensive than shoes in my city) still kind of are. Long story short, max is makes some seriously strong, grippy and long lasting tyres, especially in the 3” width range ;)

    Hey Andy, i Know this is an old Video. I was wondering about the controller you using, can you actually program the controller with a ratio to give you the ability to place a sensor on the crank drive gear and work out gear ratio 3.39:1 etc but finding out what the transmission ratio is. This might solve you problem with the sensorless mode issue. We used to do this kind of set up on High powered HRC heli (2-5KW) 12s 44v LIPO power.... on the ESC. we used to do a calibrate set up where you know how many field windings it had and you set the Phasing like that and then with the rotor blades off..... scream the motor up from idle to full throttle and it would then give a burst of high speed to tell you that the calibration was done.
    coupled with Soft start on or off. May work, not sure. Just an idea.

Cheers Mate! Regards Leigh Lendon

    I have had quite a few befang motors of 350w and all have same problem in that the spindle inside doing the turning, are made from poor metal and shatter after a while due to heat. So unless they can put better oil insde to protect unit. Somis the m620 any better or does it use same spindle?

    • @stopcensoringme6296
      @stopcensoringme6296 4 года назад

      That's not why they break, at least on the bbshd's not sure about 350 watt models.
      I have a bbshd and i have worked out that the "spindle" breaks from knocking the motor on logs rocks etc. Me and my friend had same problem after he clipped a log. The more you bang the motor the more likely it is to fail.
      If you avoid this the bbshd is a fantastic motor and never had a problem since. I also have the m620 which avoids knocks by being built into the frame it is also a larger stronger motor core. If you BB is low then lifting it 20mm or so may help avoid motor strikes.

    • @martinlewis1015
      @martinlewis1015 4 года назад

      stop censoring me
      I have only ridden on flat roads, and no hitting anything, but still 4x befang motors have shattered main spindle, i took it to an engineer and he found the metal quality poor

      @stopcensoringme6296 4 года назад +2

      @@martinlewis1015 Not sure if they use the same spindle as 350 watt model, probably not. I would say bbshd has a larger spindle. It's only happened to me once and it was definitely from hitting it. I do pretty hardcore mtb with it. Drops, jumps, steep hill climbs and it just keeps going. Never melted a nylon gear either. and the m620 is unstoppable.
      Iv'e heard laboring the motor up hills and starting from stand still in incorrect gear can cause problems. But Maybe ditch the 350 watts for 1000 watt bbshd!

  • @DavidDeLuge
    @DavidDeLuge 4 года назад

    Does it have a "road legal" setting for when you are, well, riding it on public roads so that it conforms to the current UK legislation or is it designed as a purely off-road animal?

    • @davidketley5359
      @davidketley5359 4 года назад

      Electric assistance can only be provided to a maximum of 25 km/h (15.5 mph)
      The motor used must be of no more than 250 Watts (maximum continuous rated power)
      The e-bike's pedals must be in motion for motor assistance to be provided.
      So a lot of modern bikes are illegal on the road.
