I built a Chinese Carbon EBIKE!!

- Опубликовано: 31 дек 2020
- I purchased a $680 FULL carbon frame direct from China, with a HUGE 840Wh battery. It's called the Dengfu E10. I Paired with a Bafang M500 Motor rated at 95Nm torque, massive 840Wh internal battery. This bike looks like it could be the ULTIMATE electric enduro mountain bike at reasonable pricing.
If you'd like to see more details, I have a full build thread over at EMTB Forums including full breakdown of parts costs, frame supplier etc.

The paint I used was from here: www.specialistpaints.com
The ETOE vid that really helped me with painting: • spray paint a bike at ...
Bike Stats:
- 24.5KG Weight
- Mixed wheel size 29er front 27.5 rear
- 840Wh battery, 95Nm Motor
- 63.8 degree head angle
- 505mm reach (Frame Size XL)
- 455m Chain Stay
- 170mm Rockshox ZEB
- 155mm rear travel, Rockshox Super Deluxe
- DT Swiss H1700 Wheelset
- Deore 4 pot brakes
- Deore 10 speed drive train
- Big Betty Rear / Magic Mary Front
Also a BIG thanks to MOSHON-E and APickup for support and help with the build and paint process
Doing a DIY build like this also has negatives. It takes a fairly long time to build, shop for parts etc, especially in the current situation with delayed / restricted stock! You need tools etc, time to build. And not the best support when you need help. Warranty etc will also take time if I need it. BUT its very rewarding building your own! And you can choose the parts that you really like.
For many folks, a direct / shop bought bike is by far the best option, all things considered. Yes, you spend more, but the support is (usually) much better. But great to see this DIY build as a feasible option for those who would like to give it a go.

Loved doing this! Bike weight is 24.5KG (forgot to add that part to the vid!) have been riding the bike and it’s great!! Can’t wait to share the next vid. Also to add I am NOT suggesting this is the best way to go about getting an ebike!! Lots of time spent painting, building, waiting etc etc.
-
Warranty, reliability, longevity etc etc all need to be tested. And that’s one of the reasons I did this. To experiment. It’s a LOT of work to do it this way. Lots of tools, time and patience.
Replacement of the long awaiting... decathlon stilus
Looks great - tbh for the component cost it would be worth having a spare motor/battery as quick swap replacement- be interested in how motor compares noise and power delivery
Looks a lot like Canyon Spectra, but think you got a better motor & spec for almost same price as 7.0, plus Canyon not available until who knows when?
You pays your money and takes your chance.
Cheap Chinese stuff, is cheap because they don't bother with QC :(
Let's hope the frame is a good one, and doesn't snap putting you in hospital.
@@kevinshort3943 you assume that big brand QC is decent. They often don’t X-ray or ultrasound scan the carbon frames, so there’s probably little difference between them. Look at Luescher Teknik’s channel where he cuts up and ultrasounds frames. Some of them can be quite bad!
His idea of Cheapest is much different from mine! LOL
By far the best E-bike video I've ever seen Rob. Such interesting content and beautifully delivered. I've just built a short travel 29er and know how much work you've put into this. Fun but hard work. That paint job is fantastic and the whole bike looks gorgeous. And it's totally unique which has to be worth a lot to you. Can't wait to see how it rides.
Fantastic video, you did a great build. You've just gave me the boost I needed to go with budget drivetrain and higher end suspension components. Cheers from Canada !!!!
Just superb, really interesting, and the video is brilliantly produced ... hope the bike delivers! Well done Rob. I admire your patience too!
Unexpected. You went above and beyond what any bafang conversion bloke would do. This is DIY done right, thank you for showing the way. This is really inspiring me!
Fantastic project and well produced video. I am not a big fan of the ebike in general, but always love DIY bike projects. If I ever did cross over to the ebike world I would build one up myself and of course refer back to this video. Thank you Rob.
I did built this bike after watching your video. I have to thank you so much, it is awesome! I recommend M600 motor, 29" wheels front/back and 160mm travel front and 150mm travel in the back.
Rob this is one of your best videos, can’t wait for the review.
agreed.
Agreed too! This is definitely next level stuff. Rob never says never to a challenge.
Right?
yeah!
Damn it Rob you have just send me down the rabbit hole to research for myself... Why have I just ordered a premium ebike before I found your vid...?
Really interested in your review.
OMG! I've been thinking of doing exactly the same thing! The paint looks amazing. Can't wait to see the ride review! Top Job Rob!
Absolutely epic, best looking ebike I've ever seen, and the spec has me excited aswell. Can't wait for the ride review and your thoughts on the Bafang motor, but very nicely done indeed. 👌🏻👍🏻
I can’t find the specs- can you put the link to them please
Best eMTB video by far. Good job. Bike looks stunning.
As a complete bike nerd buying every bike I have as a frame set and building them up, this is exactly what I've been waiting for. With the parts, time and a little bike building skills ... I'm sold.
You’re gonna cry long and hard after that first scratch! 😂
Or when the frame cracks
@@Fellafoe69 690$ for a frame swap is not that bad. I had some chinese frame in the past, none cracked. I would not use handlebar or fork because failure owuld be so bad but for other parts why not.
I definitely did.
My dad spent ages painting mine for Xmas and I took it out and him not being am expert on bikes hadn't adjusted the chain guide properly and so the chain came off and scratched up all the chain guide then i dropped a pair of pliers on it and scratched up the top tube and i just cried.
Or in 6 months when that bafang blows up.
@@YerDad632 😂😂😂😂😂
This video is so good! Cant wait to see you testing the bike! Much love !
Best looking bike ive ever seen!! Amazing job. Great vid
Rob, what an absolutely brilliant video and effort from yourself, this video will genuinely inspire SO many riders to take the dive into "eeb-it-yourself" (trademark pending!). I'm so impressed with how much you have developed your you tube channel and your skills over the last 2 years, its been a pleasure to follow your journey, we have met a couple of times at Berkshire cycles and Peaslake and you have always been very approachable and genuinely friendly, I've had a gen 1 Turbo Levo expert for over 4 years now and I still love it as much as the first test ride! I'm in the market for a new bike this year(2021), as I've done everything I can to my ride to better it, plus I've been waiting for that "ground-breaking new bike" to hit the market, the SL almost temped me, but I think 2021 with have some pretty special things coming from various brands! Good luck with all your future endeavours and keep up the hard work (trust me, its greatly appreciated)... Happy New Year, 2020 can F--k right off! LOL
Fair play Rob. I did the same thing by buying 4 alloy frames which use the Bafang Ultra motors in 2019. 3 full suspension frames and one hardtail. All four bikes I built cost me less than my Levo and Kenevo. This is the next step for ebike owners however, I do agree with you in terms of the purchasing process. I'm quite lucky to have private property which I can access in my neck of the woods. Perhaps I'll make a vid and upload my Bafang Ultra collection for all to see as all four still work after near 2 years.
Keep up the vids Rob 🤙
What’s the weight of your full suspension alloy framed ones?
@@mathewh3849 it differs between builds. The weight of each frame without batteries is between 17kg - 21kg. Each kilowatt battery weights 4.5kg. I will be honest and say that my builds are on the heavier side. But, they can fly when you want them too. I'm on the verge of preparing a vid showcasing them (just need to get permission from someone I know who owns private property again) so I'll update my EMTB Forums page when it hits. Let me know if you would like to see anything specific in the video. I've already have people asking me about geometry and motor power which I'll cover in great length.
Ride safe dude 🤙
I think this show a good quality bike is in order of the USD 6000, the calculation u guys made doesn’t include labor hours, if u account for that u end up pretty much in the same bracket price.
What an absolute legend. Amazing video earned you a sub. This and your protection video but this was another class. What you achieved paint finish and under budget...incredible
Production quality of this is insane and the editing is really good as well as that the audio is fantastic relative to other content I watch on RUclips thanks for the effort thumbs up
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely stunning paint job, love the mullet setups too.
Incredible Rob! Dare I say, a game changing video!? This is going to get both consumers and bike companies thinking👍
Man, that’s the best looking emtb I’ve ever seen in my life. Great job with the build!
Fantastic results! Nice work.
A lot of people have cheap Chinese mountain bikes, they just don't realize it....
hahahahahahhahha ,,, too funny but true .
Swaggerlot Yep. And I'm not sure why he titled this "cheap".

Looks stunning, was a bit surprised there actually! 👌
Well done mate and kudos for hanging in there. I would have left it stock and rode the shit out it lol.
Excellent video!! Ahead of the pack by miles
What a great looking bit of kit! New subscriber, so nice to see someone taking the risk and doing such a fantastic job building!
As someone that does airbrush and Cerakote work this is one of the best videos on painting on RUclips. Wet sanding, all the right prep and a 2K clear! Cheers!
Looks great, I ordered myself a Frey M600 for about the same price and am just waiting for it to be built and shipped
After seeing so many scary reviews of Chinese carbon frames, I've subscribed to see the long term durability of the frame. Nice video
there are plenty scary reviews of top brand carbon frames also
What a great video! I was like, I really need to skip video to end but I didn't do it! It was great to watch every second of the video until the end! :-) What a bike indeed!
Super nice video. And the bike looks sick!!!
Fantastic job! This is exactly what I’ve been planning on doing. Also from the same supplier.
They have a new frame called the E22 to be released end March 2021 with improved geometry; Enduro/DH type.
It will house the Bafang M620 Ultra (160NM Torque).
Got a thumbs up as soon as I heard : "I'm calling it the CHEEB" 😄😄
its a swear word meaning vag in cantonese lol
Top notch video work. Awesome topic.

That looks sick!!! Congratz Bro!
Very interesting project Rob - well done, and like many others who have commented I'm interested to see how this stands up to punishment, and I
agree with your comments about the Deore drivetrain - I've been running Deore cassettes on my Focus Jam2 for the last couple of years with no problems.
I got 1600 miles out of one cassette and chain combo, and only replaced them because it seemed like I should - they still worked fine!
The current set is on about 1000 miles at the moment with no issues.
I'm quite interested by many of the comments regarding Chinese quality.
Not all manufacturers will be up to scratch for sure (but that's the case everywhere, even here in the UK).
I design products for a Chinese manufacturing company who supply Domestic Lighting, to US, UK and various other markets.
Obviously these are safety critical items and subject to stringent testing and certification, in a similar way to the testing that would be required
for a bike frame.
In our factory we manufacture for some rather top end retailers and we also make stuff at the lower end of the price scale for Walmart!!
Same production lines, same staff, same Design, R&D and sampling dept., same process, work flow management, testing and QC broadly speaking.
Different customers do have slightly different requirements, but they all follow the required legislation.
It's usually the materials, and components that are specced that makes the most difference to the perceived quality and price of the product.
I would imagine that this is a very similar scenario in the bike manufacturing industry.
I don't know if Dengfu are an OEM manufacturer for any big brand cycle companies?
In our industry, by having long standing relationships and working closely with branded and trusted retailers we've learnt good practice over the years, so if a Chinese frame manufacturer has similar relationships they would also benefit from this, and they should therefore be able to offer a quality product on a direct basis.
However, some Chinese manufacturers will cut corners if they are off loading goods into the domestic market or just shipping stuff out directly to end customers, so potential home builders should do their research and proceed with both eyes open and at the same time be aware that the money saved is probably a good proportion of what brands charge in order to be able to achieve brand confidence through customer support, replacement parts, warranties etc.
The bike looks great, and looked quite intuitive build wise. Will say been wishing we might see a shift away from hard wired lights an turning lights on bikes, as some companies can put pretty low grade lights on them, and a switch to having some usb ports on the bike frame. I say this as many lights have usb connectors it seems, allowing us to choose what light we enjoy the most, and still run it off the battery of the bike over buying a battery we need to fit on the bike. Put on some covers to hide the ports when not in use, and even the companies having their own lights you can use built for the bikes they sell an it would be a nice change.
Nice bike! Glad u done it! Hope its gonna work great on the mountains! Cant wait to see u test it out!
Lovely built! Thinking about getting it myself!! (you got my sub with the converted currencies in the end :-D )
Keep up the fantastic work and ride safe!
Rob i am so excited to see your video. Finally a professional review of the bafang. I'd just like to take this opportunity to say SUCK IT ! To all the over priced big mafia bike companies that have tried there hardest to keep bafang down and prices up.
Recommended video to me and it was shot 10 minutes from my house, what are the chances 😂 great video 👍
Great work and video Rob
That was friggin amazing. I got more joy from this video than any other MTB RUclips video on the internet
Im still waiting for someone to put a lightbar an one of these E-mtb, with that batter size im sure you could get it to last ages!
Great job on the paint job! It looks great, but I would have left it flat black and maybe put some select decals here and there on it maybe just because it's so much easier. Also, you'll never have to worry about scratching the flat black carbon frame.
horrible paintjob. was looking brilliant in black satin and he made it look like a cheap plastic toy.
@@constantinosschinas4503na it looks epic
Hello. Thank you very much Rob, that's exactly what I was waiting for, the dengfu & bafang test drive .... I'm waiting for the following ;-)
The production quality here is insane! Great work!
Rob, I want to thank you for adding the dollars to pounds conversion in the video. It helps Yanks like me out a lot! Beautiful, beautiful bike. Fantastic 😊
Well this could be an even cheaper alternative to the Decathlon Stilus. I bet you could build a nice enough bike for around £2000 if you bought cheaper suspension etc or even some good 2nd hand bits. Looks a nice bike Rob and that colour is 😍
LEEDS106 or just build a lot of bikes. Then order from rockshox and get quantity discount. If a bike is cheap it doesn’t bother me what it looks like although I wouldn’t need an e bike
That's the price of frame and battery. Decent long travel suspension won't come free. You can go down to Yari/Deluxe select level but that's still serious money. If you want wheels that'll stay a bit true for the kind of stuff this kind of machine is meant to ride it'll cost a bit too. I would say 600$ for the fork 250$ for the shock 250$ for the wheels, tires cost a lot of money and matters a lot too. 100 for the dropper 20$ for each component. In the end it addup.
Mega video. Already have an eMTB but I like tinkering and building my own stuff, might have to do for my next bike in 2 years or so.
Great vid man! Looking forward to your long term review on this! Cheers!
FFS Rob, if this next video makes me sell my Levo and do this, I'm sending you an invoice! Great vid, looking forward to the next.

Looks amazing! Please do a heaps of jumps and drop-offs. We all want to see if you can break the frame 😆
For sure! Needs a proper test
Best answer yet! I think we’ve all seen Chinese carbon frame break videos...although this looks pretty damn solid. 🤔
@@bradtrent5298 from what i'm told most frames are either chinese or taiwanese.. what name brand companies do differently is quality control and rejection. i worked with chinese suppliers in electronics and they're not all fun to work with. most would try to bypass checks, re-use circuit boards for example and if you don't notice.. no recourse, because china. pinkbike had a video where a company they interviewed said 'basically we need someone in china all year to quality check parts'. They CAN make a good product but generally if there's no oversight, you're effed.
@@insanebmxthomas Oh, I get it.....and that’s why no matter how good the spec or how solid the design looks, there are still all those Chinese Carbon frame explosion videos that would make me pucker if I was the guy flying down a hill on the back of one of them! 😬
A lot of guys have already been thrashing frames from this company. Only major complaint is to put locktite on all the hardware threads so it doesn't rattle loose.

Ebikes from known brands cost 6 to 8 thousand pounds
@@enisab4495 a simple search on eBay finds electric bikes for less than 300€. That's would I would call "cheap" in this context.
@@ChilapaOfTheAmazons are you stupid? Bikes at that price snap in half after you sit on them, the battery the motor and the components like brakes wheels drivetrain etc. are 100% trash and will be useless after a ride
@@enisab4495 you couldn’t be over exaggerating more. One ride? One ride? You really really think a bike is going to be unridable after ONE SINGLE RIDE? You think it will snap in half just sitting in it? You have no right to call someone else stupid if that’s honestly what you think will happen. Obviously $300 cheap will not be anywhere near a $6k bike quality. Literally everyone already knows that. You tried to make someone else look dumb by actually being dumb. I love to see it.
I mean 5500 dollars is nowhere near cheap, that's fucking much money but 300 dollars for that kind of bike would just be like getting it gifted. Even up to 1500 dollars or something i would call this bike cheap. After that not anymore. But since we are already here... What does cheap really mean? That paint job looks better than my Norco sight vlt A1. The factory paint is crap
Nice job 👍 might repaint mine now!!
i liked the factory paint more
Many of the paintjobs on these bikes are garbage. The paint on my 2018 Enduro Elite is faded and pathetic, to the point where I'm going to have to strip it and repaint it so it doesn't look like shit.
Weight?
The problem with rattle can paint is that it won't last. It's fine for decorative objects, but on mtb it's a nighmare in the long run. Spray gun with high quality automotive paint is a must for this type of use.
This is amazing. Do you have a full bill of materials? I want to build the same bike!
It looks amazing.

If it was fully Chinese all the parts and stuff he’d be dead so he has to put good parts on at least but still not cheap yh

Wow this is a great quality video!
e-bike noob here, I'm wondering why going with a carbon frame where the bike will ultimately end up very heavy because of the motor and battery ? An aluminium frame wouldn't be better for this kind of build ?
Your still saving weight in the end with carbon
It is worth it to save the weight so it is easier to throw the bike around the trail. A lighter bike will be able to jump higher, and be maneuvered easier
@@johnhanley9059 LOL you obviously know little about frame materials. And you don't seem to comprehend the idea of using a metal frame on an e bike vs some chinese carbon.
@@johnhanley9059 honestly a few pound difference probably won’t make a big difference in regards to maneuverability and jump height. A rider will get used to any bike/weight with time.
Anticipating your review of this! Currently got a couple of these on order (one for the misses and I) and looking to seeing if we made the correct decision.
The factor that swayed it for us was the ability to purchase the frameset, motor and batteries for such a reasonable price whilst being able to order the rest of the components through our cycle2work scheme.
