My spring project was a BBSHD 52v 17.5a kit into a Specialized Pitch Expert 1x10 Deore bike. The kit came from Electrifybike who had everything in-stock, unlike the more popular sites that are out of everything most of the time.. I bought an Eggrider display with it so I could custom program everything easily. It makes a huge difference in ride-ability when you can alter settings to stop the wheelies and chain slams, and find the sweet spots for cadence/gearing/workout/range and comfort. For chains that will last, get the KMC E series chains, made for Ebikes. They're not cheap, my E10 was $52 but they're the strongest you can buy. So far I'm loving this thing. Ordered new tires to get rid of the mountain bike knobby's for a more of street/path/cross country tire. This is exactly the workout is was looking for when I built this. I haven't ridden a bike since 1974. I'm 65 and I had reservations that this was going to hurt, a lot. Totally unfounded it turns out. My legs were trembling after the 1st 8 mile ride for 15 min after. Now 40 miles latter, my legs are fine, and get it gets my lungs and heart working hard, but nothing ever hurts the next day like I expected. Mark at Electrifybike was terrific to work with, highly recommend.

I have a BBSHD on a Cannondale bad boy. My car stays parked most of the time when the weather is above freezing. Its the best thing I've ever built! Some day I feel like a bike and take bike paths and other days (if im late for meeting up with friends etc.) I can basically be like a motorcycle and ride with traffic around town if needed.

I´ve using my BBSHD on a fat cargo bike on a dayly basis for 2 years now; 160 to 260 kg load, 36t chainring. 52v 10ah then 21ah (made out of Samsung 35E)battery. Superb climbing capabilities even with heavy loads. No issues! Just ripped apart a cheap "sunrace" 11-46t 30$ cassette, 2 spokes and a chain after 2400km.
BTW: you forgot to mention that the Bafang Ultra comes with torque sensor and the BBSHD not which is a big step back in terms of smooth pedaling

My bbshd is running a 3200w controller with metal gears and a 52v 25ah battery and 60amps . Its a beast . They guy who made the controller tested the control and motor in a torture test and the motor just sucks it up . The battery on the otherhand gets stressed a bit running flat out going up hills . I like the bbshd because you can put it in virtually any frame you want whilst the fixed motor only suits certain frames .

Fitted the bbshd into my full suspension boardman off road bike, great performance, but would recommend a gear sensor to cut off the power fractionally whilst changing gears as it is 160nm of torque! ...also recommend the lekkie type front sprocket, as it's alternate thick/thin sprocket teeth grips the chain a lot better than the stock pressed steel bafang one, another clever touch was fitting the 36v 250w sticker to keep the right side of the law! ..keep speed down and enjoy your ride!

Another Chinese e-bike builder using the Bafang M620 motor is Dengfu. Their USA office/brand name is Winice. I received the Merak or better known as the E56 model. It is a carbon fiber full suspension fat tire e-bike. Been riding it the last 6 months here in Monterey, CA. The local riding site is Fort Ord with a crazy web of single track trails consisting of most sand, most of it is hard pack but as the summer dryer months and useage extend the sand gets often softer. This is when the fat tires help out. It looks quite nice but the wheel is a bit long and it still weighs 83 lbs. It really isn’t that fun to jump and difficult to do rear wheel kick outs but for the most part is capable enough to keep up with others in group rides whom predominantly ride Specialized Levo mullet e-bikes.

Hey, I just put an order in for a Biktrix juggernaut Ultra Duo 1000. From your video I think it comes with Isis crank arms rather than square tape crank arms & bottom bracket. I have some issues with my knee range of motion (lack of full bending) but I use an adaptive crank shortener. There are some good availible short ISIS cranks from the unicycle people. There are also shorter square taper cranks availible but mainly lighter duty for kids bikes. Not sure if those will fit or if they will have enough "Q" factor to clear the motor and chain stays. Anyway hopefully, I will be able to source a spare set of cranks 0r to modify to my needs. Thanks for your view

Donald Bartholomew nireeka has two models. The Homie and the Prime. The Homie is a traditional cadence sensor hub motor bike with a 500w motor with full suspension. The Prime is their much more powerful 1000w fat tire mountain ebike, with a mid drive motor and torque sensor. No suspension but you can upgrade it to have front air suspension fork. It doesn't offer rear suspension. But that's fine bc the fat tires provide some added comfort on their own.

As a owner of a "tuned" BBSHD powered bike, as you already stated, the weekest part of the bike is now the trasmission (mainly chain, derailleur and cassette). Which options have you found that can work well with this much power? I mean 8-9speed (that are more then enough with this motors) with modern clutch derailleurs and wide range cassette that will last longer then normal XC bike parts... Thanks!

I've had two Freys with Bafang Ultra for a couple years now (early adopter), a fat tire and a mid fat, and they're both awesome! I also built a frame to hold a Bafang Ultra, but beware that the mounting plate only comes in aluminum (I haven't found one in steel), and welding aluminum requires post heat treating to achieve maximum strength.

I haven't seen anyone mention anything about current draw so here's a little insight: It seems it would be good advice to go with a higher volt battery pack so that you can decrease the amps which would in turn keep controller temps down. Assuming you were going to run your bike at the MAX rated output of 1500 watts: a 52v 14Ah ($500 Panasonic GA) battery will give you a runtime of 29 minutes (theoretically) however that would be at 29 Amps! A 72v 10Ah ($620 triangle Panasonic GA) battery will give you about the same (theoretical) run time of 30 minutes HOWEVER current draw will be a LOT cooler at only 20 amps. Keep in mind all of this is based on a constant max motor output of 1500 watts WHICH NOBODY WOULD EVER RUN THEIR BIKE AT for a continuous 30 minutes.

My question relates to the tuning of the engine, if you cover this. As the engine keeps going on a short while even after the pedaling has stopped. This can be critical in some situations... Where it’s an electronic limit in settings that show up on the monitor, if it’s limited it should be passible with the Law. I'm going to convert my wife's Electra Townie 3i bike with a mid-drive motor. I'm leaning towards a 36v500w Bafang BBS02. Her "Townie" has a front caliper brake and a rear "coaster brake." But I seem to have read somewhere that this type of back-pedal brake is not compatible with a mid-drive motor. Is this correct? Am I out of luck here or what? Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have a 4 seat 4 wheel Rhodes Car that I bought years ago. I was never very happy with it for 3 reasons: the 20" bicycle tires are *REALLY* not up to the task of carrying 4 adults, especially since most of the weight is on the rear tires, only the front two people pedal which can get challenging in a hurry if there is even a slight incline, and the single rear band brake was absurdly inadequate. The rear passengers not only don't have pedals but they also sit mostly above the rear axle, and the front seats are aft of center, so the rear weight bias is massive. I tried to order dual brakes but it came with single and I never got that resolved. The company has changed hands twice since then and they have upgraded the brakes and also have electric assist available, but that doesn't help me with mine.
To solve most of the problems, I've entertained replacing the rear wheels with "big wheel" scooter wheels or maybe even motorcycle wheels with disc brakes. With the massive weight bias, the front wheels and tires are probably fine but I could do the rears first and see how it rides. With just the rear wheels swapped it would have a cool T-bucket vibe, but there's something to be said for all 4 corners matching as well. With the brake and tire issues solved, I could add an electric motor to make locomotion much more pleasant. I wonder if one of these mid drives would be feasible, or if it would be better to just get a plain motor. It does seem like a mid drive would be unnecessary complexity since it has a solid axle and it would be very easy to just put a sprocket on the output shaft of a plain motor and another on the axle in an appropriate ratio.
In case you're wondering, the drivetrain consists of two complete parallel systems of a single sprocket on the cranks with a 6-speed derailleur about halfway back, which has an output sprocket going to another 6-speed derailleur at the rear axle. That makes for an extremely wide 36-gear set of ratios, being biased mainly toward an incredibly short 1st gear rather than a high top speed, which is actually as it should be. This thing is for tooling around on weekends or in parades, not racing or high-speed touring. The main drawback to this system is that the derailleurs hang down low enough that they can sometimes be in harm's way, especially since the ground clearance is otherwise quite good with nothing else below axle level. It could use skid plates to protect the derailleurs, or better yet a hub gear system that would completely avoid that issue.
The thing has been sitting in storage for years because it cost way too much to just junk and there's no way I could resell it for anything close to what I would need to not feel violated even more than I already do. Besides, the concept is fine and I *have* had some fun times with it on level ground, it just needs some tweaks to be a real blast.
Do you have any advice on a project like this?

2 geared hub motors with throttle control's easy to install and the original gears aren't affected,so that's the boost to get it moving with 4 passengers and pedal assist.when you want. It sucks to put a lot of money in something and it doesn't do what it was advertised too do.if you are really sick of it then sell it on Craigslist or eBay you won't get much money but it won't be there to annoy you

    • @awo1fman
      @awo1fman 4 года назад

@@ronaldharris6569 Thanks, but hub motors won't work for this application. The rear has a live axle and the front has steering knuckles, not forks. Just like a car or kart.
The rear has an interesting setup to act as a differential: it has a freewheel on each end of the axle, so the outside wheel can turn much faster than the inside wheel is turning to prevent binding. Otherwise it would be impossible to turn the thing at low speeds because it's so wide. It works as a ratcheting positraction differential. It was optional, with the standard being one-wheel drive. The drawback for electrification is that powered reverse isn't possible, although that isn't much of an issue because Flintstones-style reverse by putting your feet down and pushing is not difficult.
