    Well done. I was particularly interested in the logic you shared using the nylon gear. Without being an engineer on the team that designed this motor I believe that is the reason for using nylon. It's a perishable part that keeps you from destroying the motor. no questions about it. Thanks again. well done.

    • @HighVoltageKits

      Cheers Steve. Still on the same one all these years later. Seem a few folks burn up stators that would likely have been saved with a nylon gear that went to the steel version. Cheers

    nice to hear critical points from an ebike builder who clearly has experimented with various configurations. more voltage, less amps = less heat….with a power increase. I built a bafang 750 watt coupled to a nuvinci rear hub with autoshift. I have it geared low with a 34 narrow wide chainring on the bafang, and a 18 tooth on the nuvinci. Motor always spins easily, and climbs ‘til it throws you off the back. And only use a 10 amp/hr 48 volt battery, which lasts a very long time, motor is never amping up, even from a standstill, because the autoshift always starts you in the lowest gearing. These cv hubs compliment the mid drives very well….only one chainline, so its super low maintainance…no derailleur😀 cheers and happy new year!

    Fellow Brit here, although still live in N.E. England where there are some hills. Originally started watching your videos because yours were the only ones i could find with hills to see how the BBSHD coped. Originally was thinking of a rear hub motor, but after your videos and more research, decided on the BBSHD which should be arriving tomorrow. Must admit I was slightly confused by the captions, but can see others have pointed out they were muddled up. Keep up the excellent videos and looking forward to the new projects.

    Sorry if this has already been mentioned in the video or comments, but I think nylon gears are also useful in the event of motor failure as it's cheaper to replace a single damaged nylon gear than the whole motor when it tears itself apart! Thanks for all the videos, learning loads :)

    • @HighVoltageKits
      @HighVoltageKits  4 года назад +2

      No I missed that one! Thanks for posting this. I am quite sure that the nylon is cheaper. I have also heard it's a failure point for if a limb was to get jammed for any reason. The nylon would then fail when a steel would keep going much longer and do much more injury.. Not 100% on that one tho. Cheers!

    I love your thorough and smart clips. I believe the ludicrous change is merely paralleling in 3 surface mount resistors in the feedback sense circuit. This halves the resistance that generates the sense voltage in each of the phases, which makes the feedback circuit “think”
    It is seeing 25 Amps, when it is really seeing 50 amps. When you connect to the Controller to flash the limit, if you want 50 amp peak, you enter 25. This is consistent with the thread that the sense resistor values are halved. I was not under the impression that the ludi comes with a steel gear. I was told by them they do not change it. This is circa early 2020.
    Thanks for your excellent review. I need to learn about ASI Vs phaserunner..... thanks sir Codswallop!

    • @HighVoltageKits
      @HighVoltageKits  3 года назад +1

      I figured they were doing something with the existing circuits. The 25 amps thing rings a bell. If you have a look online luna have just released a new version of their bbshd controller. Same size but using the VESC platform. It is quite a step up for them. Not seen it on a bike or running a bike so talk is cheap but I hope its good. Thank you for sharing! I'm about to sell 2 of my hub motor bikes to build a mid drive and I saw people saying that controller with the Bafang BBSHD motor were amazing.. Little bit more research but I'm sold on the idea. I'll be going with a geared hub with belt drive though. But now with your lesson on the gears and heating the motor I have a better idea of what to look for. I'm going to over power a hub motor with that controller first. I have a motor that's been through hell and just won't die. I have to know what it's limits are, then I'm going to dissect it and learn how to rewind a motor. Great video, thanks again!

    Excellent video Capt., one correction on the gearing that melted the nylon gear. It was a Luna Mighty MIni (I think they call it) 30T on the front, not a 36 and correctly an 11T on the back. All the info you gave on RPM and gearing was spot on. These BBSHD motors are built like tanks and if you give it throttle it doesn't matter what gear your in, it's gonna turn. But the extra stress from a high gear ratio to get it moving and keep it there is what creates the heat. Since I dropped down to a lower gear ratio(1 to 1), which I learned from watching your video's, not only are the temps much lower, but I really don't notice a difference in speed. As you correctly pointed out, in the higher gear it won't turn as fast. The lower gear turns faster, ergo, ( I had to throw that in there to try and make my gear melting self sound smarter) but the same speed. My cassette is actually set up were I can use a more than one to one ratio when I need it. Since I have a 30T on the front, I have 3 larger gears on the back I can use. I haven't tested it yet but I am going to try it on a slope that is at least 40% grade. I'll measure it to know for sure and maybe even make a video. But for everything except the rare super steep slope, I plan to run a 1 to 1 and never change gears. Acceleration is better and top speed stays the same. Thanks for all your help

    Thank you for the inclusion, great video. We (ERT + ElectronCycles.co.uk) spent a long time working out how to use gears and overcoming the Nylon gear thing (we also spent a fortune developing a metal gear, but abandoned it we we realise that the next thing to fail could be disastrous- motor windings). For non fat bikes we recommend gearing 42T F and 28T rear for on 29er or drop the rear to 26T for a 26” rim. Like the man said, let the motor spin! Thank you Captain, Ay Ay skipper!!!

      Have you considered developing a controller kit for the Bafang Ultra G510? I built a DIY frame for it but need a few more amps to easily maintain the flow of traffic on local roads (usually 65kph+). I'm currently testing it with 58T/17T (6.1 gain ratio) single speed but plan to add a Nexus 3 IGH for extra gearing to help out at startups and at top speed. The ultra gets hot but comes with the metal reduction gear, hasn't given me any issues yet at 1500w with the stock controller.
      I've seen a few guys fit the phaserunner inside the Ultra but it'd be nice to have a more plug n play option. Otherwise hopefully Bafang will get the hint and give us a Super Hyper Ultra Max motor built to handle higher voltage and current ;)

      eBikeaholic it is on the map but we’re a bit too busy at the moment. The plug and play bit may be a little more complicated too. We can definitely do throttle wise and actually have a rough map ready now (have to try it which with a bac 2000 will fly along. I’ve wpso all run mine at 70A x 52v butbdidnget abut hot. Will handle 60 a definitely

      But wont high rpm be a waste of amps? I plan to build mid-drive bike with bafang motor , right now i have 250w geared hub motor and it very very powerful and torqy at 3-15km/h and then gets weaker and weaker , tops at 30km/h where it looses voltage but does not give any acceleration, should not it be better to ride like a diesel car? high gear , low throttle, low rpm ? to maximize range and be easy on motor?

    • @HighVoltageKits
      @HighVoltageKits  3 года назад

      I am not a complete expert but in general electric motors love to spin fast in order to shed heat. If you can max the rpm in a given gear then the amps will fall off due to back emf. That is why the controller employs field weakening. Diesel motors employ the compression to get its torque I believe. I am not sure this helps. If you post this on the discord we can have a good discussion tho. Its a fascinating topic! Cheers

    For people worrying about melting the gears, General Motors used nylon timing gears in their engines for years, which I would imagine get a bit hotter than this small electric motor. If people are actually melting these gears, it's probably a poor quality or improper grease that's not dissipating heat or reacting chemically with the nylon and causing premature failure. Even with the things you mention in the video, I'd still put money on the lubrication cooking over the gear itself melting. I'm quite enjoying your videos, they're very informative for someone looking at building one of these bikes.

    • @HighVoltageKits
      @HighVoltageKits  4 года назад

      You make a very good point. In reality what happens is that it softens to the point where the forces sheer of enough teeth to stop it functioning. But full melt no. The stresses might be a bit higher in this application as it is the main reduction gear. But the point is a valid one. If the user gears the bike correctly it should not happen just like with general motors.

    Thanks again Captain. I just picked up a Trek Farley 5 and a Surly Ice Cream Truck. I’m gonna build out the ICT first. CYC has been accepting orders for their new motor with the ASI controller for a couple weeks now. It takes 1-3 months to arrive and is more expensive. Cyc can handle 3000w and if you keep it pulling 3000w in hot weather, you might burn it, so if you limit the power to 1500w, you still getting a bbshd rival but using half power you could use so not heating at up as much

    Really like your descriptions and the evolution of your build. So would it be fair to say that what you've created here is basically an electric motorcycle? With your 1:1 ratio, do you ever pedal the bike?

    • @HighVoltageKits
      @HighVoltageKits  4 года назад

      Sometimes. I do have two other gears that are a bit higher. The exercise part of the vehicle is something I want to work on. I prefer the term light electric vehicle. But you are correct in your thinking as it's not really a peddle assisted vehicle. Although it can be and with a different chain and gearing could easily be. So restrict the power and you can ride speed restricted trails. You can't do that with a traditional motorcycle. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

    Just want to add some to this very informative video. Ive been running bbshd for 3 years and thousands of kms now. I run 60volt and 50 amps. No need to bash Luna for their controller. They did what they though was reasonable at that time. Nobody had BAC controller set up back then. I stripped nylon gear in first few kms after running just 52volts and 50 amps. And motor was nowhere near hot. Temp is not what makes it fail! Its sudden burst of torque at wrong gear. It strips not melts. Ive made and been successfully using bronze gear since. What gets motor hot is long rides at high speed. On the trail with full but short bursts of torque and slower speeds BBSHD can go all day at 3000 watts. Keep gears low spin motor fast. BBSHD can take tons of abuse. BAC+ 72v+ sturmey archer 3speed is my next upgrade.

      Good points. I have seen the gear fail in both ways. I guess I always had it geared correctly. Sorry if I came across as harsh on luna. Their efforts on the bbshd are good. I was just looking at a destroyed bbshd this morning. Respect of the gearing key..Thanks for the comment. Cheers

      @@HighVoltageKits Yep yep. Luna now has PEET plastic gear. I will give that one a try as well. Want to get my gear "noise" down a bit. Its a bit of a learning curve with BBSHD to sort of feel what gear to be in for given speed and grade. My rule is- if its " light" enough to pedal its good enough to give motor all the beans.

    Hi,
    Thank’s a lot for the amazing content, it’s very helpful. I have a bbshd on Crossbike which I use for commuting: 40km for one way and 500m elevation when I go back (several routes possible, shortest one with gradients up to 17% for 200m). I use a Cannondale Quick CX1, 9speed 11-32 cassette, Lekkie 46t chainring, 48V 14Ah stock battery. I just ordered the newest ASI Bac 800 kit from ERT and I want to change the battery for significantly more top speed too as I have 30km of flat road. But I’m not sure if a 72V battery make sense as I don’t have (and don’t wish) a throttle. With such a power pack, I’m afraid that I won’t have a comfortable pedaling cadence on the flat and/or be able to benefit from the top speed the motor could deliver. If needed, I can install a Sunrace M991 (11-46t). What’s your opinion, does a 72V battery make sense without a throttle or do I take a risk to overheat the nylon gear? I wish to reach 55-60km/h, maybe a 52V instead is ok too… Thanks for your valuable suggestion. Cheers, Etienne

    • @HighVoltageKits
      @HighVoltageKits  4 года назад

      You will easily hit the speeds you are talking about throttle or not. In terms of peddling it's up to you to balance the power going into the peddles if you want to work as well. The nxt will give you good control over this. In terms of the nylon gear you want to keep the rpms high. I hit over 60kph on the flat with 72 volts on a fatbike. But use a throttle. The pas is restricted to 1200 watts with the NXT. 3250 watts via PAS is not a good idea. That said you will get more top speed with the 72 battery anyway at 1200 watts as the voltage will mean a higher top speed anyway. Really it's a case of experimenting with what fits. I would get a throttle still. You can always unplug it... I think a future nxt update will allow it to be locked out. Hope this helps

    You've come to a nice point on your bike. Well done. I ride as I did a standard bicycle but much faster, don't ride as hard as you do and I rarely use my throttle so have found the Ludicrous controller more than adequate and have yet to melt my original nylon gear (1250 miles so far). I do have to change gears but can maintain 34 mph on flats and climb anything my tires can grip (albeit a bit slower). It seems all I've given up is the ability to climb fast and in my lowest gear the throttle is more of a wheely on/off switch.

    • @HighVoltageKits
      @HighVoltageKits  4 года назад

      The wheelie thing would be taken care of with the asi. But no you should not run into trouble unless you restrict the motor to low rpms and dump 60 amps into it. But it sounds like you know what you are doing. I usually cruise around at about 45kph. Yeah I could go faster but it serves no purpose and you just consume a bunch of power with the field weakening. The real fun is the acceleration in the bigger gears. So where you are pulling wheelies the asi ramps the power in a more controlled manner. Future updates to the NXT display will allow rider control of this.

  • @JPapaPhotography

    The trick with the bbshd is to run more voltage and stay in low gear to minimize strain. Mine is running on a Phaserunner with 40amps phase weakening and 88volts li-Po. Top speed is 53 mph and I never have to change gears. I get 40-50 miles on a charge. Ive never melted a gear and I've been riding for 2+ years. To increase reliability, I've added heatsinks to the motor and it rarely if ever exceeds 120 degrees F.

      Sorry to hear about the battery. I have use their Satiator charger and it is a very well made bit of kit. I must admit I have not used that particular battery chemistry though. I usually push the power a bit in my videos but I can get a very good range just by dialing down the power. The one day it was super icy I set it to 1500 watts max and cruised 6km for the loss of 5% of the battery. In terms of motors either the BBSHD as I have used it or the CYC would work great. The thing about having power is you don't have to use it... but its there if you need to. I could and do go out on long runs in the bush and on gravel roads etc. A 25 amp hour pack can provide hours and hours of riding if you drop the speeds back to 30kph. The CYC has torque sensing now as well which is good although I can't say what its like as I am on the Gen 1 motor and its only just been finalized.

    Hi Captain, Great video sir. Very well produced and cut. :) I apologize for being a ignorant ebiker but wondering if you might offer advice. Sorry for being a pain. I am just about to do my first ebike; buy a bike (suitable) for conversion and the kit (Bafang mid 1kw). My main goals are to: be able to pedal the bike around in the city (PAS) at 'sensible speeds' (to avoid being stopped by the police) and to to do some single track. I'm a experienced MTBer and road racer but now injured and cant ride far under my own steam so ebikes for me now i think. Q1-May i ask what you think is a required RE number of rear gears for said use? I see u now use about 3 gears. I wonder if having a 11 speed cassette and derailleur is of any use if never going far down the cassette, I'm therefore thinking buying a bike to convert with a 9 or 10 speed could work. Cant quite get my head around the cassette thing but I do understand spinning to keep the emotor rpm high. Q2 - Am I much much better buying a new controller for my intended use? Q3- A battery for a frame mount? Would 52V 17.5 about optimal. Q4, lastly - does anyone get any airtime with their BBHSD. Nothing huge but small drop offs, rollers etc. My concern RE BBHSD is catching the motor on a rock and smashing it. Thanks

    Hi, just come across your channel. I run 3 fat bikes in Wales UK, thinking of running a BBs-02, or BBSHD on one of them, over buying an E bike with Bosch, Yamaha or Shimano motor. I'm 20st in weight, South Wales is hilly in parts, but like you know, weather not the best throughout the year, and overall temperature not the warmest, if that makes any difference?. If I wanted a bike for carrying maybe a front or rear pannier, to carry a camera or drone, am I looking in the right direction for my first conversion? I ride two bikes with 26in wheels, 65mm wide rims with 4.8in tyres, and one with 26in wheel, 65mm wide and alternate 3.8 or 4in tyres.

      Spent loads of time in Wales. Pembroke and Snowdonia mostly. Also, Tywyn way. My sister is near Carmathan so I'll be over next year. Lower temps mean the motor will run cooler overall. Recommend the BBSHD over the 02. There are also some new motors from TOSEVEN. The DM01 is I hope going to be the equivalent of the BBSHD with torque sensing. If you check the video history you can see info on those. You are also welcome on our Discord community. Links in the description.

      @@HighVoltageKits Hi again, thanks for the heads up. I got two bikes I been considering running it on, as my two other fattys I'm running 4.8s and the stays and BB are so wide I think I'd be taking that chain line way out away from the BB and too much fuss on the mods taking away the lower gears. I'm either going to try it on a Marin Pine Mountain 27.5+ bike with 3in tyres, or a Ritchey Commando fat bike with narrower stays/BB on a 4in tyre. I'll check out the links of the other brand also. So for instance, as an example, if it was the same motor, same gearing on the bike, in a 500wt, 750, 1000, 1000+ travelling on the flat, at the same speed, which motor would be the most reliable, economical between charges, durable, and go the furthest distance also travelling at the same speed for all units? Remember i'm 20st, and thinking of a pannier for camera gear and maybe a drone also. Snowdonia looks stunning, we got a few nice trails down here just off the M4 motorway also, that's worth a look. Thank you for the previous reply. A friend of mine has a 48wt battery for sale also, so may get lucky with a new setup with two batteries.

    Hi great video content again. You most definitely have mechanical sympathy this goes along way with powerful middrive converted bikes. They need to be treated with a bit of respect running high voltage in regards to all the things your video covers I think people forget they are on a push bike not a motorbike and just try and go as fast as they can. Another quick question have you re greased your nylon gear yet?
    Also with the ASI ERT can you set the power levels /peak watts/amps for different power levels your self via the software? I would like to have a lower power mode or modes for long range rides and technical off road sections I would want something fairly similar to say stock bafang bbshd level 2 to 3 where I can use the gears on the cassette. But then have a couple of max power modes making the most out of the controller battery and motor.

    • @MrMeowBox
      @MrMeowBox 4 года назад +2

      Not that I know of but you can use the Eggrider display and change the power levels to your liking in the app and it tells the controller what max power you want just by changing the pedal assist level on the display, I used that when my battery wasn't good enough for 50 amps so I set the pedal assist lower to only use 30.
      The Eggrider display has been one of the best things I've bought aside from the Bac800 and it can even be used on the stock controller, The support from George and Emil has also been amazing after having some issues getting a locked Bac800 from ERT.

      Have not greased it yet. I will in spring but I'm down to one bike so I dont want to mess with it yet. The way the bike is setup here is at a nice comfort zone for a fatbike. A lighter bike you could push a bit more. I could push it further but I'd rather have reliability and use a different bike to do that. I found my sweet spot lol. The egg will adjust anything of riding performance. The bac800 is insanely complex and bacdoor is not great to use. It should get better with developedments this year!
