That goes for any singer too even if you have experience singing imitating can cause alot of strain on your vocals because it's not your natural vocals (sorry for the random vocals lesson lol)

Tbh I think the voice was pretty spot on considering the actress doesn't sing plus even if she did its not her nat voice so she probably had alot of strain doing it (also I sing myself and I used to have a habit of imitating my idol singers until I found my voice trust me it hurts your throat doing it)

Having seen the film tonight and having realistic expectations of any actress attempting to pull off that voice I can hand on heart say that the actress did an incredible job not only of the singing parts but also her acting and how they styled her - was incredible - and who could sing like Amy? That film is now in my top ten list I cried I had goose bumps, I was amazed - I loved it for the beautiful and compassionate creation it was. And for the fact they specifically used the words toxic codependence. More people need to be made aware of that. Let’s not split hairs over the singing!!!!!! Oh my days!!!!!
It’s a trend now in the industry to bring out movies about “legends” who have died (Elvis, Priscilla, Amy)…no doubt there will be more to come (Kurt Cobain, Freddy Mercury, Janis Joplin, etc)…they also seem to be making “horror”/“thriller” movies out of classic fairytales lately (the curse of Cinderella, the revenge of Cinderella, The Piper, Humpty Dumpty, etc)…the industry really are running out of ideas, it’s almost like they’re thinking to themselves “hey we’ve done everything, we have nothing new, time to resort to plan B by doing remakes, biographies, folk horrors/thrillers, reboots, live actions, spinoffs)
Marisa's performance was outstanding. Period. Clearly, there is no human who can copy paste Amy's voice but considering all the challenges that representing this idol brings, Marisa did a great job. To be honest Marisa's done a great job. There can't be another Amy. The whole project was a massive mistake and I feel sorry for Marisa who has clearly put a lot of work in. But we didn't want or need an approximation of amy. We didn't need any if this.

The thing is - its not even about Amy being so complex nobody could ever portray her - this is obvious and we accept this about most people who have biographical films made of them. It's just that Amy was SO unique and natural in her uniqueness, that any attempt to capture her mannerisms and style requires such a high level of technical direction and practice that the result looks so unnatural and forced and in the end looks like some kind of caracature, a mockery version of the original, like it's not meant to be a serious portrayal at all. The actress is probably as close as anyone could get to playing Amy realistically - and as good as job as she's done, maybe it's just not enough for most viewers - certainly feels that way to me.
She’s there technically in every way possible for her to do it, but her voice just lacks the depth needed to really make it sound moving in any way. It’s inauthentic and that’s the antithesis of what made Amy great because her authenticity was part of what made her such a phenomenal talent. Being a good singer is different than just hitting the right notes, and you’re not just a good singer because you’re not tone deaf. She’s not a vocalist and has never really done singing before, which is fine if you’re not doing the role of an icon like Amy, but it really fuckin falls flat because it’s just watching someone copying Amy’s inflections without the depth and soul that you can’t have unless you’re a vocalist, and even then the best vocalist with the right inflection that would do her justice is such a difficult thing to find. I have seen people encapsulate her soul and do a great job, but this ain’t it.

Saw the movie yesterday in the cinema. Amy was on a whole next level, the actress tried. There is only one Amy in our hearts. Everyone else is imitating.
The movie was good but I found it left me feeling empty like … I found myself not actually connecting with the emotions that lead Amy down such a dark path. I had to walk out of the theatre because it was to painful to watch. I think it’s just to soon we only lost any 13 years ago…
People in the comments seem to forget that this is not a documentary but a biopic. Some biopics dub the artists voice over the actors singing, others let the actors sing it. I'm sure that Marisa Abela is aware that she doesn't sound like Amy but I don't think this is the point. Her singing makes me as a viewer much more immersed into her character and gives this a much deeper level of authenticity. She did a great job, y'all need to chill.
