- Today on The Hard Count, narratives run rampant during this part of the year in college football. However, who are the teams that may have an incorrect narrative around them? J.D. gives his thoughts on Florida Gators football, Ohio State Buckeyes football, Clemson Tigers football, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish football. 2023 was a great year on paper for Florida State Seminoles football. But what's at stake for Mike Norvell and DJU in 2024. J.D. breaks it down. Finally, J.D. talks through his CFB players you need to buy stock in (including guys from Alabama CrimsonTide football, LSU Tigers football, and others) and what House vs NCAA means for US as college football fans. I typically agree with JD’s takes. However, I do not understand the premise of the FSU take. Look at how Norvell developed Jordan Travis. Norvell is the portal king. I’m not sure why he would need to win the conference and contend in the playoffs to prove that there is a foundation there. He has already done it. This sounded like it was more appropriate for Cristobal or somebody like that. Not to mention he was 1 or 2 on the priority list to replace Saban. You’re not considered for replacing a 7 time natty champ if you don’t have the goods lol. Cmon man.
He’s averaging around 7-8 in the transfer portal, so not quite king, but good. I definitely give Norvell credit, for being a good QB developer. He wasn’t 1 or 2 to replace Saban, that was just the agent, getting him a new deal, which happens all the time. As a UF alum/fan, Mike definitely deserves his credit. I know after the first two seasons, there was a lot of noise, which has always been crazy to me. Coaches need time to build a sustainable program, and to me, he’s done that. Please know how horrible that tasted to say lol
I agree. Lots on the line for the Noles and this year could also lead to a move out of the ACC and into one of the big 2 conferences as well!
Kind of crazy that a team with the #1 returning production last year... which ultimately put more players into the professional level of the game, except for Michigan and Washington (two other playoff teams)... did not get the benefit of the doubt with an undefeated regular season into the CFB playoff. It is almost like last year was a beauty pageant invitational versus something competitive based. Maybe MLB should have just excluded Texas and Arizona from the baseball playoffs --- they have smaller fanbases, injuries to critical players, smaller payrolls, etc..

A very big overlooked factor in FSU right now is that they also have their hooks sank into recruiting the state of Georgia.

@jdtheguitartist they're doing real well with tavion Wallace, josh petty, and peyton joseph. They flipped the number TE last year out of Georgia. Got 5 star Luke Kromenhoek out of Georgia last year. So a substantial part of their recent recruiting.

Standard for what exactly? Mike has done a good job, but those fans were calling for his job after season 2. He’s also done it in a weaker schedule, with 3 of their main competitors being down some….for sure 2 of them. I still have a hard time saying Clemson is down. @lifeizrealtv ye cam jackson was 360 and now he is 335 15% body fat, that's terrifying. The strenght and conditioning is on a whole other level.
I agree as an FSU fan that Coach Norvell has proven he can build from the ground up. Also that if we go out this year and have at least 10 win regular season it proves our staying power which I believe is already there but time will tell. Regardless I am glad Coach Norvell is our coach that he will be here a while.
For a long time when they were talking about expanding beyond 4 I thought the G5 should have a seat at the table. Especially when UCF had made serious noise and Cincinnati had just made the playoffs, and when they announced 12 early in 2021 I thought it was a good thing and the right thing for them to have a seat. However, so much has changed since then and it has changed my opinion. 1) Because of realignment basically every heavy hitter outside of Boise (Cincinnati, Houston, UCF, SMU) has moved up to P4.
2) Those team were full of 4th 5th year and even 6th year players, guys who stuck with there school and were developed to an elite level. Since then with NIL and the transfer portal those guys are getting scooped up left and right so their rosters have gotten weaker.
3) Everyone knows the Sec and Big 10 are paying like $80 mil per school in the coming years and the ACC and Big 12 are worried about falling behind making $35-40 mil. G5 Schools get payouts around $5 -6 mil. How much more will there be a disparity in facilities and resources to pay coaches/ staff/ NIL after even a couple years of that?
4) Look at Liberty vs Oregon this year. Oregon had opt outs and everyone showed up for liberty and it was not even a game.
5) FSU Fans think its criminal we were left out of the playoff, I obviously have my opinions and am not going to debate that now. They said oh that will never happen again. Well to P4 yes but it can and will happen with a G5 champion at some point.
Let them have their own tournament. FCS has their tournament because there is a disparity between talent and resources. The G5 hasnt been able to get it done under the current gaps in talent and resources for the last 40 years. Why will it change when that gap gets wider? Just because you have a few years were G5 beat P5 in high end bowls doesn't necessarily mean they will be able to do it 4 rounds in a row and win the whole thing. #9 Boise beat #7 Oklahoma. #12 UCF beat #7 Auburn. #16 Tulane beat #10 USC. yes these are great wins and if you removed the logos and just showed this ranking beat this ranking it really isnt that earth shattering. None of those examples there were beating top 5 teams much less doing it 4 games in a row. None of them were blow outs either.
There is a reason a 16 seed has only made it past 1 seed 1 time in the basketball tournament. Even then they didnt come remotely close to the final 4 even. There will be a lot more years of teams winning it all that are ranked in the top 6 than seeds 7-12 too.
As a UF alum, you should be happy with what Mike has done. He ignored the noise after season two, and has done what he’s needed to do since then. Yes, some will question the conference strength, and that’s a valid point, but he’s beating who’s in front of him. He earned my respect. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go vomit now lol

@@NorthGeorgiaJosh I don’t expect you to necessarily read all of it, but I replied to one comment with the message below, and of course nobody will address it. I’m not guaranteeing anything, we’ve all learned from that before, but everything I stated is factual(minus my personal prediction). Some Gators need to remove the bias goggles, and the UF/Napier haters, need to remove their hatred, and be more objective, and less subjective lol. Here’s my essay lol
UF’s roster is drastically better this season. Aside from being ranked 5th, in most snaps played by freshman last season, that equates to experience, especially on the defensive side. Add in the players lost, verse what we replaced them with, and there are upgrades all over the place. The OL will be drastically better. Pass protection was absolutely dreadful last year. We ranked 75th in drop back pressure, and 115th in sack rate. With the additions added, Barber back from injury, we have the top center in the SEC(pff grade), 2nd in the country, and 3 of the top 10 SEC offensive tackles. We’ve added more offensive weapons, and while losing a player like Ricky never feels good, Wilson being more experienced, Badger/Dike added, and deep threats like Mizell ready to go, we have more talent, and more experience on the offensive side of the ball. People will quickly forget about Trevor, when Johnson gets to be the premier back, and then Baugh coming in.
Defensive side of the ball will be just as dangerous. The young guys got experience, being thrown into the fire last season, getting James back to run the defense, Pop Howard coming in, Wingo/Boone/Pyburn back healthy, other additions such as Gumbs, Slackman, Asa, Douglas, and Bridges. Add in Moore back, and healthy, and every layer of defense, is better and more experienced.
Now look at the schedule, and what a lot of the teams lost from last year, and playing 7 home games, 7-9 wins(including bowl game) is very realistic. The schedule isn’t easy, but most people are looking at logo only, and not how much each team lost, on an individual team basis.
@@Fluffylife420 that’s a similar path we were on too. Year 1 and 2 of Norvell we were around 70% freshman and sophomores. Which of course with the Covid year everybody got an extra year of eligibility. Early on I said let’s look at year three we should be winning 8-9 games. We won 10 and then 13. I am not a fan of firing a coach less than 3-4 years. It is never the answer to sustaining success.
@@NorthGeorgiaJosh exactly, and Billy has even touched on it, because of the roster issues, NIL issues, etc, year 1 was basically year 0 and so on. People want instant gratification, but if that happens, it’s not normally sustainable. We saw that firsthand, but we won 2 championships, so it’s forbidden to talk about lol

Have you actually broke down the schedule, and what those teams lost from last year? Not to mention a lot of our harder games are at home. 8 regular season wins, 9 including bowl, is the ceiling. Now they just have to get it done. This is by far the best roster Billy has had entering his 3rd season, and his best coaching staff. I think Billy and the boys enjoy being counted out.
I feel your discussion of Florida is close to accurate. But you didn't discuss their schedule. The entire narrative around Florida is that they need to be markedly improved to merely go 6-6. To go 8-4 they need to be an almost legitimately elite college team. That's the narrative genesis.....not that Napier is a doofus

@@ppearson35N that's the prevailing narrative, as I said.
Two things. First, there are a lot of people saying things like “Florida is a dumpster fire” and that Billy Napier is a doofus. Not exactly nuanced takes about the strength of schedule. Second, I think a slightly improved Florida team could probably be 6-6 with a bit of luck, and a markedly improved (but not yet elite) team could go 8-4 for a couple of reasons. Last year’s team was not quite as bad as the record would suggest. With one close win that involved some good luck, and three close losses that involved some bad luck, the exact same team could have looked a lot better if you change just a handful of plays. And the schedule is probably not as bad as it looks right now. A lot of the teams on the schedule are likely to take a step back this year, but we won’t know for sure until the season gets going.

UF fans seem to believe a few teams step back but others might step forward, such as Tennessee. Who are you predicting wins against? I have Florida going 6-6

Should win: Samford, @ Miss State, UCF, Kentucky
Better than 50% chance: Miami, aTm, LSU
Decent chance, but less than 50%: @ Tennessee, @ FSU, Ole Miss
Probably lose: UGA, @ Texas
I think 7-5 is a reasonable prediction. Anything less than that I would be disappointed, anything more than that I would be very happy.
FSU’s Oline will be better, and the RB room is great. DJU throws a nice deep ball, and the WRs have speed. Sure he hasnt been good at the intermediate throws, but he wont need to be. FSU’s offense will be run, run,deep ball, run… like 2022
9.5 Miami Clemson and FSU same odds
As a long time Nole fan, I would laugh @ you if you told me my team was left out of a playoff while allowing a couple of 1 loss teams to leapfrog us but they actually did that. So we will never be able to let it go, because that just doesn't happen to us, we aren't 1 of those teams who gets overlooked etc yes HS recruiting needs to improve but these national media types need to learn about development and evaluation, players other teams haven't been able to utilize correctly we've turned into NFL players.

FSU won a conference title game against a 10 win team that had been averaging 25+ points a game and only gave up 2 FGs while using a backup QB and being undefeated means you don't have to look impressive you just need to stay undefeated teams with a loss need to look impressive... I like JD but man according to him just about every team is gonna have success and be a fringe playoff contender if not in the CFP. There’s also a lot of broad predictions he’ll say something like I’m not saying (insert about half the teams in the country) is gonna make the playoffs but they have the opportunity to. You could say that about atleast 50 teams any given year. It’s just always so politically correct don’t wanna make any enemies. Or he’s so terrified of being wrong and becoming a meme or something.
Well, in his defense, now that 12 teams will make the playoffs realistically almost all of the teams he talked about have a decent shot at making it.

Best FSU team in years, the 2023 team, had to go to OT to beat Clemson's worst team in a decade. FSU is in a complete overhaul in 2024.
