  • Need to know how to choose, fit and gear-up a climbing harness for Via Ferrata?
If you want to buy your first sitting harness for Via Ferrata or to better educate yourself on the topic this brief video will help you get to a buying decision faster. Is not a sitting harness review. It only provides essential information about sitting harnesses and in general the harnessing systems one might use on the Via Ferrata.
This is one of the episodes of what I want it to be a step-by-step nonprofessional guide to Via Ferrata.
BE ADVISED! I'm not a professional guide, mountaineer, alpine climber or Via Ferrata climber; only an enthusiastic mountaineer eager to try help and explain my experience so far.
All episodes are as short and concise possible.

Thank you for all the tips and easy to understand explenations - especially the via ferrata resting and Y shaped harness as emeregeny set is great tip for solo adventurer that I didn't heard mentioned elsewhere

      Thank you Daniel.
Yes, the U-shaped lanyard from Climbing Technology used as part of your main resting system can become an emergency Via Ferrata exit aid in case you fall and your shock absorber deploys.
Of course, in such circumstances you have to self assess your situation if you can continue without any major risk or if it better to sit and wait for help to arrive (ideally someone to bring you a replacement Via Ferrata Set).
Once the shock absorber of your Via Ferrata Set deploys the system becomes now static and the question is what will you trust more if you decide to continue, the Via Ferrata Set with the deployed shock absorber or the Ypsilon lanyard from Climbing Technology?
In case you fall again on a long vertical you are in big danger with both so...your options are quite limited and it ends being a matter of risk and probabilities only you can solve by deciding what's best giving the circumstances.
For my case, when I go on long or difficult Via Ferrata I keep a backup set in my backpack. Of course, a second set makes the whole system quite expensive but...we only have one life and if we really want to enjoy extreme activities like Via Ferrata I think is worth the extra money spent for that just in case scenario.

Its interesting mentioning that full body / chest harness is for adults "with body shape" who has troubles to "fit" into sitting harness. In our country, sitting AND chest harness is greatly promoted for beginners and adults, and almost mandatory for those with heavy load on back (larger backpack) to prevent turning upside down (head down) on falls due to shifted centre of gravity. Your videos are great, but I was always wondering why I havent see more to the chest harness point. In every single course here in Czech, you will get chest harness as essential piece of equipment.

If you carefully check my videos you will see that I actually have on me a chest harness (it is true that an improvised chest harness that plays the role not of holding me up right in case I fall but to make sure I don't slip from the sitting harness in case the fall is that bad and I end up upside down). I guess consumers dictate how any sport will go. In rock climbing not only that they only use sitting harnesses, they also do it without a helmet. A very complex topic for debate. From a safety stand point it makes sense to go up with a full body harness. From a practicability point of view it might be that a full body harness will prevent the user from heaving a more relaxed experience (maybe). Then, comes the cost limitation. Consumers don't buy based on safety (not to say that all of them adhere to the same safety standard so, spending more it no longer means being safer) but based on confort, looks, etc. A full body harness will increase the cost and will not look well on the Instagram pictures where everyone tries to look smart and amazing. Will take some heavy campaigning to change this in the consumers mind.
Personality, I always have the chest harness on as well. Very rarely I climb without (almost never). Probably when someone sees me they think I'm dumb or stupid. It is the last thing I care about. Safety first!

@@JetSetYourself fully agree. I think a proper safety equipment is way cheaper then potential cost of hitting you head upside down. Thank you for the videos you are making! Especially the resting systems was something I never heard once on two courses I have attended.

This "''Via Ferrata tutorial for Beginners" series was extremely helpful!
Could you tell me what type of chest harness you use in the example picture at 2:15?

Thank you Lános. I will make everything I can to soon add more episodes to the series.
The chest harness I use in the example is WEBEE CHEST LITE + TIE-IN SLING ( www.ocun.com/product/webee-chest-lite-tie-in-sling3 ). To me this is the better set to use compared to anything else out there (I speak about chest harness systems while excluding full body harnesses that are obviously superior).

Could you make a video that shows how to secure children under 40kg?

I will make time and record a video on the topic. I have to find a way to make it less controversial. It is, a very sensibile topic.
