I haven't watched RWBY since like season 3 or 4 i think, and see people in the comments saying that it was better early on anyway, but i wouldn't know. (I haven't watched any more, but am just spoiling myself with these clips.) But i just realized that i sometimes think my past self is better "written" than my current self. Like when i'm facing things now, sometimes I think, before i would have been more hopeful, or more organized, or cared a bit more. But I also recognize the experiences i've had that made me be a bit more depressed, a little disorganized and wary. We see this in adults all the time. The point of this volume I gather is reconciling those two parts and growing beyond it, so it sounds relatable to me. When volume 10 comes out maybe i'll watch these newer volumes.

When i first watched this scene i actually really liked it, but now that i rewatched it, i feel like the impact would land better if they just spread out them facing theyre past selves through out the volume instead of it just being in one scene

Let’s be frank, the soul of this show’s writing died with Monty.
It’s just been a slow motion train wreck with Miles and Kerry trying to keep it alive as long as they could but ultimately failed due to running on fumes and letting it devolve into this.

The entire scene just sums up Volume 9 perfectly: A desperate attempt to bring back the past that fans actually enjoyed watching when it's too late to do so, and the horrible writing in this scene puts the main issue that so many old fans had with later volumes directly in the spotlight!
I finally stepped away from RWBY after Volume 8, and it's clear from what clips I've seen from Volume 9 that RoosterTeeth was doing everything in their power to keep a dissipating fan base from vanishing completely with this final volume, but they failed. Miles and Kerry took a wonderful story idea and turned it into their own version of Game of Thrones (they said at one point that they were "inspired" by it) which is what ultimately led to RWBY's downfall.
No amount of on-screen nostalgia could have redeemed this show from the years of demolition those guys did. Senselessly killing off characters, lackluster fight scenes, poorly written characters, and terrible plot decisions can't be fixed by a few minutes of nostalgia dumping 9 seasons in, especially when it's this poorly written.
If this series miraculously get picked up somewhere else, I can only hope they start over and go by whatever Monty envisioned, rather than taking their own "inspiration".

Monty was not a writer whatsoever. Great choreographer and character designer, but going by his notes wouldn't save RWBY. The series needs a competent team of writers that follows the basic aspects of the show and develops them properly. A lot of fanfic writers could do better...

@@drissouwg9649 on the contrary, the past self were deeper because their personnality weren't reflected on the surface, blake was hiding she was a faunus, Weiss was hiding her family problems, yang, her mother. If the personnality is reflected on the surface, it's not deep, it's surface. That's why ruby is the only one whose past self isn't deeper

    • @drissouwg9649

@nikolonobile5024 Yeah, that's called character development and arcs. You can't expect them to be the same character for 9 whole seasons. The only reason why Ruby was more surface level is because she felt like she was forced to take on that role as the leader and that's not a good thing it led to her having a massive meltdown and basically killing herself.
The characters weren't hiding their problems they just had no one to share them with, Weiss finding a new fanily in team rwby, Yang confronting her mother and Blake embracing her identity was all made possible through each other's support. It's a great dynamic that you see progress as they get to know each other.
