Thanks EricL5150! My Chevy Cobalt's latch was stuck in the unlocked position. Your video of the Ford's mechanism gave me a ball park of what components/springs to check and I was able to work the "locking latch" back into place with a screw driver. That should help me get by until I can get a replacement. You rock!
Thank you Eric!! Your video helped me fix my problem. I thought my hood latch was broken but it wasn't. The problem was that the bolt point was even when it should have been slightly higher than other side. I knew this was the problem when I saw it in your video. It was uneven due to age. Thank you so much!!!!!!
Thanks for the video.... my local shops did not carry the part so I went down to my ace hardware and found a spring.... was able to find the broken spring so it was easy to find a similar spring. Thanks.
So I literally just took my car the ford dealership they wanted 250.00 for replacement part/ service! Thank God I found your video I’m now doing to fix for pennies! 🤭
Thanks a lot, I was able to fix mine with your help. Couldn't find the right spring so I just kinda jury-rigged a different one. If it fails I figure the backup latch will save my butt.
Warms my heart to hear that. Yesterday, I saw many positive comments from ladies at the bottom of an article about 70's prog rock. I no longer feel like an alien.
There are little clips on the edge of the cable right before the hold where it slips out after. Using a pair of needle nose pliers, I squeezed the clips and pushed the cable through the hole
I am wondering exactly how you got the cable out of its slot on the old hood latch. Just a screw driver and push up or does something have to come off?
It was a while ago but you pull it out as you take a pair of pliers and gently squish the sides (has small plastic tabs) of the plastic connector. Pull it right out after...don't try to go sideways. To replace, simply just push back into the hole.
besides seeing the broken spring, how did you know that the latch was broken? also, will a broken latch cause an alarm to go off randomly? (I have a 2005 ford escape)
The hood of my truck popped up slightly. There is no alarm or check light for it on my Ranger and for many other vehicles. The hood will look like it popped up slightly or the hood will flip open (very dangerous). On my truck, I was driving on the highway and the hood popped open a little but it caught on the last part of the latch so it didn't pop open all the way. I believe that many modern latches will do this rather than the hood popping all the way open as the latch closes and then locks into place. If you can't get the hood down all the way (hood keeps popping open when you try to close it) then you know that the latch is not locking and you should replace it.
I have a 97 civic and the latch is stuck on the hook on the hood... I unbolted the latch but can't get it off that loop... I bought a new latch but can't figure out how it works,, it looks like the latch doesn't move at all where it is connected to the hook.
I guess to each his own but I don't understand why you didn't just replace the spring? Same thing in my Ford Taurus and I just re did the spring.....fixed and done.
could not find just the spring (didn't try a junkyard) and needed it ASAP so I could drive to work the next day without fear of the hood opening up while driving.
Sounds like you had the same problem I had in this video. You can rig it up like I did which requires you to stretch the broken spring to attach it to the original place where the spring was attaches. This would definitely ONLY be a temporary solution until you replace the hood latch. Check around 3:00 in my video.
+Blake Weed I don't think I can help but my best guess is that you bent the hood and it doesn't sit correctly into the hood latch mechanism. You probably need to get the hood bent back into shape
Eric DIY we tries with a crowbar and pushing it nothing will work the latch is pushed to the left and when we pull it it stays hooked to the latch...but thanks anyways ill bring it to a shop
This was my first video for the Eric DIY channel...We've come a long way since 2013 thanks to the support all have shown including upgrading equipment...keep supporting
I've repaired many of these springs for clients .Just go to the nearest hardware store and buy a $2.00 Heavy duty Spring . Good video .Thanks Greg.

Does it work for explorer 06. .because looks like the spring comes with the cable.. ..2 in 1..(both are the same piece)
It should be similar except for maybe the part number if it is different
. do you know thi size of the spring
@@alflopez5788 This was from 7 years ago so I don't remember and don't own the truck anymore

how did you get the cable out? its bigger than the hole on both sides.
You take a pair of needle nose pliers and carefully push down on the small plastic wings on the connector. Then, you just pull out the cable.
got any suggestions on my truck i pull the hood release i hear a spring pop but the hood doesn't come up
sounds like a broken spring like mine...it is getting stuck in the closed position which is stopping the hood from totally opening
I guess to each his own but I don't understand why you didn't just replace the spring? Same thing in my Ford Taurus and I just re did the spring.....fixed and done.

John Adams What a dumb question
My hood on my ford expedition will not close tight. When I try to close it, it just pops right back up. Is there an easy fix?
