I really really appreciate that even though you have a vast, complex, and nuanced understanding of photography… you’re willing to simplify your explanations and make these videos so easily approachable to new hobbyists like me. I’m deeply grateful for your channel. Thank you!
For someone who is slowly 'self teaching/learning' all about photography and a little low on confidence this video is absolutely 'spot on'. I have switched from a heavy Nikon D700 to the Fuji system and am thoroughly appreciative of your video tutorials. Sincere thanks indeed.😊
As someone who learned photography in the film era, Fujifilm cameras seem “normal” and most other brands are too computer-ish. Another great video with excellent clear & concise explanations. 👍👍
Same. When I transitioned to digital recently, I had no clue what I was holding in a Sony, Canon, etc. I picked up a Fuji, and it was: "Oh". Haven't looked back. ✌
And I love that I can switch directly to what I want, no need for shutter priority or all the the other weird stuff. Don't what to bother about iso, put it to auto, want a slow shutter durn it down. Just awesome, it feels more natural.
I have used 4 Nikons, 2 Canons, countless Sonys & many more cameras. I got frustrated and sold off all my gears; for many reasons...Now I am moving on to Fuji for colors, ergonomics and consistent quality all across their products...So, I watched all your videos and you, my man, has cleared all my doubts...You have helped me much more than my friendly neighbour...LoL...Thank you. Stay blessed. Fuji! Here I come.
I was out of photography for over 20 years. I picked up a used D60. I loathe going through menus to get to the manual settings that I was so comfortable with in the film days. I kept saying, I need dials. I find it exciting to see that someone makes a camera that resembles me, LOL. Then I saw the price. I shoot wildlife close up, in full manual (usually birds, deer, snakes, and turtles). I'll never get a $1,000 better picture from the new stuff compared to my 20+ year old Nikon. While I'd love the knobs, and as much as I hate the menu's (I just can't see as well). I could never justify this expense as I am a RAW Amateur. LOL. I applaud Fuji for keeping knobs alive. Perhaps someday I'll find a bargain one. Thank you for sharing.
I stopped shooting on manual since before the pandemic. I'm back to manual for fun in 2023. I always go back to this video. I have the Xt3 and Xt5 cameras BUT this works with many other brand cameras with manual settings buttons/dials . Like old film cameras. Thank you 🙏
After 6 years of owning and using my Fujifilm X-T2, and assuming I knew all my dial settings, I thought, why not be like an athlete and practice the fundamentals, and check out the video. Much to my surprise, I had never noticed the "T" option on the shutter speed dial. I doubt that it's something I'll use on a regular basis, but knowing it's there, and knowing how to use it correctly is truly worthwhile. Thanks Pal2Tech!!!
This dials are one of the key reasons I decided to go with Fuji when I first switched from traditional DSLR to Mirrorless. I feel so much more in control of my shots! Although I’ve been using my X-T2 and now my X-T4 for a few years now, there were some things I hadn’t taken the time to learn about the flexibility of the dials … thanks for reviewing them all so well.
I love love love my top dials it so easy to just change something if it’s like on a tripod and I’m in front of the camera or something and just doing normal photography. It’s so easy. And you don’t have to dig through settings or hold multiple buttons to change setting which is awsome and a completely unique experience to taking photos compared to like a canon I was using in school… I’m so glad I got my x-t3
I honestly had zero clue what those dials do on Fuji, nor what aperture and ISO are, before I watched your video. The content of your video is exactly what I was looking for. As a beginner, you clearly explain these concepts in details. Your enthusiastic tone of voice also really helps to make such a technical subject easy to absorb. Thank you so much! Subscribed!
NOTE that you can still use the rear command dial to fine-tune to third stop increments when you've chosen a number value on the top shutter speed dial. It is restricted to a small range of third stops above and below the next full stops.
This gives a quite unstable, jerky workflow. (I have an X-E2.) First set the shutter speed on the top dial, then tune with rear dial, then find that tuning goes too short, then change handgrip on camera to move hand to top dial, and then change shutterspeed on top dial and tune on rear dial and repeat whole sequence (...). Why punish oneself by disallowing the rear dial to set all shutterspeeds? I have set the top shutterspeed dial to T, (and let it stay there forever), which lets me set all shutterspeeds with rear dial, which is quicker and not jerky. So the top dial then is just for vintage look and no practical purpose.
@@viktorpaulsen627I’m glad that works for you. I’m not unnecessarily hunting through a giant list of minute shutter speed changes to get to the exposure, so for me a larger step then a final fine step works faster. I set the larger step as close as possible then since the fine tune goes both up and down by a few partial steps, it’s just one minor adjustment after that. My hand is big enough to turn the shutter speed dial with my index finger while the rear controls are too cramped for my hands to use them for very long. I’m glad Fujifilm has it.
You are the only person on RUclips who get in-depth reviews, tutorials, Tips & Tricks and all the funs stuff of Fujifilm cameras. I owe you a big big time.
Hey Paul, long time viewer, first time poster. I love the videos. You very much remind me of my uncle, a man who was my father figure when I was growing up. Sorry about the tangent, here’s my comment: You can still make 1/3 of ss adjustments by rotating the dial even when not in T. The only difference is that it will keep you from going beyond a certain number. For example, if you select a 125ss your option will be 80, 100, 125, and 160. You won’t be able to go below 80 or above 160 because those number are you next available options in the dial itself, 60 & 180. I find that much more useful than using the T option…UNLESS I’m shooting astro, than the T is absolutely necessary. Thank you for all the amazing videos and tips!
I've been around cameras and five different manufactures of cameras since 1974 but I still learned something new in this video. As you can imagine, when I first got my Fuji X - T1, I just took the shutter speed dial for granted. So I either choose a shutter speed, set it on the dial, and ignore the "B" setting, or set it to "A." So I never noticed or paid any attention to the "T" setting. I found the info on the T setting to be useful. When I bought my X T1 I had purchased it for a self imposed project. I say this because I bought the X T1 when the X T3 was out. But for my project, touring rural areas on my bike and shooting using one of four primes I had for my Fuji camera was a heck of lot less clunky compared to my Canon 5D 4 and assort "L" lenses, easier to take on my bike. And, if I fell off the bike for whatever reason, easier to replace financially with the Fuji gear (used) than my Canon gear. So I bought the XC 50 - 230 lens as a muck about lens, not for serious work, but good enough for everything else. But when I first put in on my X T1, I remember trying to figure out how to adjust the aperture, took for ages.
A superb reminder on the what the Fuji does. I shoot AP most of the time, and you can forget some of the other settings, by not using them until you need them, and then its too late. Keep it up
I'm fairly new to the Fujifilm system but thanks to this channel I have settled into two modes. When hand held I set my ISO to automatic, the shutter speed to T so that I can adjust using the back command dial, the exposure to C so that I can use the front command dial, and set my aperature to a fixed value to control my depth of field. It works for me so that I never need to take my eye away from the EVF. For tripod use, I use all of the dials as needed. Again, thanks pal2tech!!
Fujis dials are the number one reason I love their system. Everything else is great, but I love having instant control of my settings without using a menu or strange button. Nice video as always. Thanks.
After 30 years of happy Nikon ownership, it was time to look at mirrorless options. The Fuji system is a complete revelation and makes me love taking pictures again. These 3 dials are precisely why I bought the X-T4.
Hi great info I noticed one thing regarding the shutterspeed dial. When you select a fixed setting you still can use the rear command dial to make the fine adjustments between the fixed dial settings For example when you select 500 you can use the dial to use 400 and 350 (not any lower) and so on Just an extra feature I would like to share
When I got my XT-2, I had never used a camera on anything but the Auto setting. The 'triangle' just made no sense to me on my old cameras so Auto was easier. My XT-2 with all its lovely dials to hand, just made it all make sense. My wildlife photography has improved a lot since I began using the XT-2 and I love it.
I wanted to thank you. I recently bought a Fujifilm X-T4 with the 16-80 and thanks to your videos (I will have seen 100 in one day haha) I was able to set everything up without problems, and to understand how the camera works. I ask you a favor though (which maybe could be useful to those who vlog). Could you make a video dedicated to this? Because I noticed that the Fujifilm X-T4 (as I think the other models), if during a vlog outside you set even one of the values (ISO / focal or shutter) automatically, the continuous brightness change (due to the maybe passing from the shade to the sun, or simply the clouds) changes the exposure in a "jerky" way. that is, the change that the camera makes is not delicate, but it seems that there are "scales" between one value and another. This was not the case with other brands. Maybe there is some setting or advice you can give to those who want to use the X-T4 also for Vlogging. I would be grateful. :) Greetings from Italy!
This is why I absolutely love my X-T1 even tho the iso dial can be quirky for others (since it's always locked and requires three fingers to turn, gotta press the button and turn the dial) The X-T (single digit) series does encourage you to use it like a film camera and in manual mode.
@@michaelxwhite I thought the same. I have a canon dslr and use manual settings however new to Fuji as I’ve bought a small used x-t30 as a walk around in cities and it’s definitely a learning curve! Love it so far but still haven’t managed to get out properly 😳
@@traceybartlam5940 yeah, photography really is exciting, a lot to learn to get the exposure you're looking for. I started as wanting to produce my own youtube videos, but now I'm more interested in film cameras and producing my own prints.
The exposure control dials is what got me interested in Fuji in the first place -- I really enjoy shooting this way. Very clear and easy, never confusion over how to control each of your settings!
i got this camera as a gift few weeks ago, I read the manual and still was struggling to get how to properly use it…it took me one video to know exactly how those settings work! I really think they should add an QR code of your videos to their manuals thank youuu
I have a X-T10 wich has some diferences in the dials but I still learned a lot from this video :). You explain everything in a very easy and simple way. Thank you :).
Great vid! I came in thinking 'ah this is for newbies' but I came away larning new things too. I love Fuji dials. Can't imagine shooting on a camera without them. And to practice, you really need to love shooting, and learn from the composition of others.
Sitting here watching all your vids on Fujifilm cameras which is a bit odd as I haven't actually got one ! Yet that is. I'm looking at getting the XT4 soon and , have to say , your vids are a major part in that decision. keep up the good work mate.
Very nice basic review, Chris. One tiny item you forgot to mention (sorry). The "C" on the exposure concentration dial allows you to dial in the exposure comp by using the front command dial. I use it all of the time.
Even better: If you set both Aperture and Shutter to “A,” and both ISO and Exp Comp to “C,” you can manually control the entire exposure triangle (Aperture, Shutter, and ISO) with the front command dial.
Nice video again! Even though I didn't really learn anything new. But this fact just showed me that I took this control concept for granted (as it seems so logical to me). And that it actually isn't as natural as it seemd to me. A valuable reminder.
OMG! thank you for this video. Your videos helped me to improve my photography sooo much! I have a Fuji X-T3, I don't have much experience with other cameras but I love this camera to bits! Keep doing what you are doing! ❤
I love my Fuji X-T2 (and X-e1 before that) controls. They can seem complicated I suppose, but with not much practice at all they become so versatile and logical. Great video, thanks.
Thanks for the video Chris! It could have been interesting to tell why we are using a specific mode or another. For example, the use of Bulb mode for Astrophotography.
I just want to say. I have been watching and learning soooo much from your videos. I went from a canon T7i in my first year to now a Fuji XT4 and I absolutely love this camera. I started shooting in RAW day 1. And have taught my self through trial and error. But your videos have helped me a lot. Thank you again and I have subscribed to follow. 📸📸
When I'm travelling in my truck I've been keeping my new X-T3 in full auto mode just to get the shot that may pop up one second and be gone the next. However, I've found that the camera will always choose the highest ISO available. In my case 6400. So, my suggestion is to not choose auto ISO but set it to a lower one to avoid grainy photos.
It's fitting that Fujifilm camera names start with an X because I really feel that they have a special x factor that other cameras lack. They just look, feel and operate so much more interesting.
Chris, as always, this video was very helpful. I am still learning photography and this is a pleasure to learn through watching your vids. I am using Fuji X-S10, to which this episode might be obviously not applicable, but I am using settings similarly as you described (left blank wheel dial in my case assigned to ISO, rear command dial assigned to shutter speed, simillar as "T" setting in your X-T4 and of course apeture on the lens or front command dial). Thanks again. When I will be recording my video about Fuji X-S10 I will recommend your channel for sure. You are doing a great job here.
Hi. I’m really enjoying binge watching your videos. As a photographer who has never shot manually, I ran out and bought an X-T3. So now I am having to learn both shooting and all the complicated camera settings 😅 in this video you talked about how if you set the shutter to T you can adjust it using the back dial. However, if that back dial is set to control something else, like focus, it won’t work. It seems you can set that back button to control many functions, so how can you pick one without losing the ability to control the others? 🤔 As in the focus/shutter example? Thank you!
I find the Fuji dials very cool both in a user experience stand point and in a learning standpoint as well. I learned exposure settings with my first two cameras : my dad's Nikon D60 and my own Canon M50 later. Both of these cameras have only 1 control dial, and for both of these cameras it is quite difficult to know what's different from one parameter to the next, sometimes you just don't see the difference between the different exposure parameters and don't know what the hell they're doing. A few month after getting my M50, I was already sick of the exposure control system so I picked up an X-T1 for practicaly nothing, and having separate dials and rings for EVERY exposure parameters was a breeze, and I got to understand it much quicker. My mom got into photography a bit after me, and I got her a Panasonic LX100 which has the exact same control system, and it paid for her as well as whe understood what the aperture was, what it was doing, and the same for all the other exposure parameters much quicker than with my M50. In the end, this exposure system might be a little bit slower for someone that knows very well cameras, but is is quicker to learn and to use for a complete beginner. And once you get better with it, you're able to use any camera, and still appreciate the tactile feel of the Fuji dials. Best all rounded exposure system IMHO
Love my X-Pro2, tend to use aperture priority and an auto ISO setting mostly, with EV comp of course. But when that doesn't satisfy, everything is to hand to go fully manual quickly and easily.
Im excited to go on the fuji train! I bought the canon eos rp in the summer of 2019. Oh what a criple hammer that is! Coming from 35mm film photogrpahy , pentax k1000 all kind of dslrs like rebels and 5d's mostly.. I never thought i'd regret that canon buy so much ! And I didnt even had high expectations either! The sellers on the shop shoved the camera I had a gut feeling that it was a lemon but I gave in to the pressure, didn't do my homework well enough probably and just went with it. The camera is very crippled and honestly beyond that crippled specs which I can rave about a lot , its boring plain simple. It embodies to my opinion - the path that canon take on recent years. Back to the rp.. crippled hammer all the way. From photo side ( so Slow its unbelievable...4 fps in burst.. common for gods sake..) and video side- the most unimpressive that can be (8 bit.. no benefits with using external monitor, no slow mo options, no real 4k options - crippled crop and losing dual pixel af.. lousy codecs, no dual sd's slots .I can go on and on and rave about the specs but also the design , the ui , everything is so.. not bad.. just ..very.. MEDIOCRE! It has disappointed me on so many levels and occasions from events shootings to parties. it literally felt like something that isnt reliable! . not like the 5d or 1d lineup that u knew you can trust. Sometimes (a lot ) I prayed the camera would just be faster and i wont miss the shot on an event or a party . The praying didnt help. It functioned ok just for casual photos and casual videos. maybe its a good thing I was introduced to the cripple hammer, since now I can appreciate other brands that maybe think about their customers and art and not only sell a lot of cameras. I am a hybrid shooter with my works right now are between fashion and music videos to commercial shorts so thinking to go with the xt-3 (instead of bmpcc4k) , any advice or recommendation would be much appreciated from you guys, peace 💕
Awesome video, thank you for teaching about those details! Really cool to see the whole family working together :D Hope you all get to rest in the weekend.
I think it would be a great idea if Fuji changed the direction of the shutter speed dial for their next iteration of cameras. On the lens when you turn the aperture ring clockwise it reduces the light. However when you turn the shutter speed dial clockwise the light increases. This really does not make sense to me. Thank you for your wonderful channel and stay inspired!!!
little note about the shutter speed dial and the rear command dial : even if you're not on "T" you have acces to al; the 1/3rd of a stop increments by rotating it, though it will only move from -2/3rd to +2/3rd as if you want a stop lower or higher you'll have to rotate the SS dial
Thank You Chris this video just changed my ignorance 🤠👌of many settings I wasn't using 🤦 thank you so much...some things we really take for granted thinking the camera doesn't have some of these options 😂.

You are my life saver… That exposure adjustment boiled my brain until I saw your video! Thanks so much!
Just got a X-T3 for my first camera and I have to say your videos are SOOOO helpful!!
I just have discovered your channel and I will go through all of your videos. Love the way you interact and explain every topic Fuji related.
The exposure control dials is what got me interested in Fuji in the first place -- I really enjoy shooting this way.
Very clear and easy, never confusion over how to control each of your settings!
Hello, just bought a X-T4 and your videos are a saviour! Thank you very much!
Great video that I'll be referencing many times in the future as a new fujifilm camera owner, big thanks!
Your videos are simply the best. Thanks so much!!!
Liking the New Look opening.
Learn something new every day
So appreciate all the information you share on these cameras. I enjoy your teaching. Thank you
i got this camera as a gift few weeks ago, I read the manual and still was struggling to get how to properly use it…it took me one video to know exactly how those settings work! I really think they should add an QR code of your videos to their manuals
thank youuu
you are a gem of a human. such concise knowledge, in such concise video.
What a great video. Just when I thinkI understand, I learn more. Thank you again!
Just switched from Canon to fujifilm.. I think this is the place to learn on the fuji family 😊
I have a X-T10 wich has some diferences in the dials but I still learned a lot from this video :). You explain everything in a very easy and simple way. Thank you :).
As you said, flash is a whole new topic, I would be delighted to be taught how to use my Godox flash by you Sir!
Big help, thanks...i've been a convinced Canon girl for years but just bought a Fujifilm XT5 wich is a bit of a challenge 🙂
I wish you had been my photography teacher when I was a student. Thanks for the outstanding videos! ⚡❤🤟🏼
Thanks for the interesting tutorial video. Greetings from Thailand 🇹🇭.
Thank you so much for this amazing explanation about how to use Fuji’s camera 📸
Always learn something new when I come here, thanks for making my experience with my X-T4 a lot easier!
I just got my XT-5 and you are a great help! Earned my SUB
Nice video again! Even though I didn't really learn anything new.
But this fact just showed me that I took this control concept for granted (as it seems so logical to me). And that it actually isn't as natural as it seemd to me.
A valuable reminder.
Great video. Now I finally understand why I couldn't use the exposure compensation dial Thanks so much. 👍👍
Great Video with clear "down to the point" explanation.
man, you changed what I feel. bless you
OMG! thank you for this video.
Wonderful! Very well done, said as simple as possible, all useful stuff in one one short awesome video. Thanks a lot! 👍
I love this guy. Hello from France. Thank you
Thanks for the video Chris!
It could have been interesting to tell why we are using a specific mode or another.
For example, the use of Bulb mode for Astrophotography.
Excellent tutorial many thanks learned about T after 1 year with XT 3 a great tip 😀
Such useful and valuable information in your videos, thank you for the time you put into this and for sharing with us .
Many thanks again for another great tutorial.
Just getting back into photography with my new xt2 and need all the the help and advice I can get 🙂
I just want to say. 📸📸
Thank you, I was looking for a video just like this! Very helpful
you are such a good teacher
This is very helpful! Really well explained, you’ve answered all the questions I have. Thank you Pal!
Brilliant as usual and picked up a couple of pointers I had not spotted before
“No, breaks are for wimps, keep working!” 😂 New sub here!! You explain things really well for beginners! Thanks man!
Great work as always. Hope you and yours have a great weekend.
❤ more useful tips on this brilliant camera, thanks mate 👌
When I'm travelling in my truck I've been keeping my new X-T3 in full auto mode just to get the shot that may pop up one second and be gone the next. However, I've found that the camera will always choose the highest ISO available. In my case 6400. So, my suggestion is to not choose auto ISO but set it to a lower one to avoid grainy photos.
It's fitting that Fujifilm camera names start with an X because I really feel that they have a special x factor that other cameras lack. They just look, feel and operate so much more interesting.
Another great tutorial Chris. These really help me get the most out of my X-T3. Love your work. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. :)
You are so great. Greetings from Bremen, Germany.
Thank you so much for these videos
Awesome video, thank you for teaching about those details!
Really cool to see the whole family working together :D Hope you all get to rest in the weekend.
Great video, thank you for the tips and techniques,
wow, you're like the Bill Nye for photography! Sooo helpful, thank you!
I love all this videos .... and I´m awaiting your Presentation of the new x-h2 .... Greetings from Germany ... Joachim
little note about the shutter speed dial and the rear command dial : even if you're not on "T" you have acces to al; the 1/3rd of a stop increments by rotating it, though it will only move from -2/3rd to +2/3rd as if you want a stop lower or higher you'll have to rotate the SS dial
Thank You Chris this video just changed my ignorance 🤠👌of many settings I wasn't using 🤦 thank you so much...some things we really take for granted thinking the camera doesn't have some of these options 😂.
Well explained, thank you! could you please make a video on how to control HDR pictures settings on software such as lightroom?
You are a Fujifilm God!
Always learning, thank you
Fuji dials just rock.
