Good point,. according to IFCA website it's a bit of a grey area. www.cornwall-ifca.gov.uk/netting '' Prohibition of netting in Cornwall's Rivers and Estuaries....
Under a byelaw, which came into force in January 2018, it is an offence to use a net for taking sea fish in any of the rivers or estuaries within the Cornwall IFCA district. It is also an offence to carry a net on board a vessel while engaged in any fishing activity within the rivers and estuaries. The prohibition on carrying or using nets does not apply to:
Various low impact nets such as a landing net, brailing net, netting which forms part of a trap for fish or shellfish, or a dredge, or any manually operated net which does not exceed 4 square meters.
Sand eel seine nets used under a permit issued by Cornwall IFCA.

Great video mate! Fellow Cornwall cast netter here. I first saw it done in the Amazon something like 15 years ago and bought myself a net when i got back. I was lucky enough to have a fishing friend from ascention island to teach me the technique. I caught some great mullet, a memorable netful of mackerel and a few good bass with it in the Fal and Fowey esturies. Havent done it in years as my net disintegrated but i would like to get another. Any recommendations for a decent quality net with large mesh size for fast sinking? Nothing like that tug tug tug of a good netful of big mullet on the rope😊

Perhaps you could include something in your videos about only taking what you need. A am a shooting but I am a sport fisherman to. Mullet are and excellent sporing quarry and it seems a shame to see them harvested by the bucket full. They are very slow growing and fellow mullet fisherman report populations totally wiped out at certain marks. The reason given it commercial netting. Mullet are a resource we all can enjoy but not once they are gone. Your method may legal I don't have the knowledge to comment. But a message of only take what you need wouldn't go a miss.

Yes but you a board casting to a wide audience. Some may not show the same restraint. When you provide instruction as you have, you should, I believe explain that when this method is affective the is a responsibility to understand the resource sustainability when harvesting.

@stevengardner81 to be perfectly honest, I think that cast nets are fine for responsible fishing and bait fishing. Unfortunately, this video is not a great example of responsible fishing. However, I do think that mullet catch sizes should fall in line with mackerel restrictions.

That’s a really fascinating and informative video-I totally get why you are so enthusiastic about it. Have you tried this method on the open shoreline where the fish, if any are present at all, are not visible and if so have you had any success? I am thinking in particular about surf beaches where flatfish are often close in as well bass.

@@davidburgess2354 Thank you mate!👍 Yes that's where I started doing this originally, on the beach ankle deep in the water. I found you need quite calm water so you can see ripples or when they surface slightly. Otherwise you'll be throwing your net blind. I suppose if your going to a spot you know always has those fish there, it could work. Hope that helps mate 👍

Advice from the local marine group:
Finally, ALL anglers are encouraged to fish sustainably, and show respect for other marine users and the environment. This means not taking more fish than you will eat; catch and release of small (and large) fish; not leaving any litter or waste, and taking care how you handle live fish so as to minimise stress and prevent their injury. D

@@jonrundle3914 totally agree Jon, the thing people don't understand is I was on holiday, and I take a few mullet once a year, every angler you ever find fishing with a rod, takes a whole lot more fish than me, I fillet and freeze these and probably eat one a month, so very sustainable, not over fishing, no rubbish, discarded hooks and line, and definitely no ruptured swim bladders, just a completely ethical way of putting a few dinners on the table throughout the year.

I'd never be unethical whilst fishing. I checked with ifca and they made me aware that actually for grey mullet in an estuary being caught with a net under 4m square that there is no size restrictions at all. Which I was surprised myself but never keep the fish under 20cm anyway as there's not a lot of meat on them 20cm let alone smaller.
