Word of advice. When you throw so close to the current, the net washes over itself and closes. Second, when you throw you need to give it time to sink. The majority of the fish are deeper then your going.
I let it sink completely to the bottom in some spots, not in others due to the snags in here. Every environment dictates something a little different, there's not one thing that always applies in every spot.
Thought he was doing great....I throw a net weekly for my bait the same way in same condition and felt he was doing awesome ..glad he let those game fish go..most would take those too and that's the difference in someone who cares and someone who doesn't imo.. however near docks with barnnicals in salt water ide def use your advice because the rip current def makes a net overlap..
Just found this channel. Appreciate your passion. I just recently started net fishing after spending an entire day surf fishing down at the beach in SC and coming up empty....meanwhile a guy about 100 yds away went out beyond the break with his net and caught 3 sizeable cobia in less than an hour. Went home and ordered a net that evening lol.
I was doing it wrong for a little while, then I got taught how to properly throw it like a ballerina, had it down after 10 tries on a 4ft cast net. Perfect twirling circle. When a true fisherman say's you're doing it wrong, I listen.. Will be catching up on your adventures. This was fun to watch. Sorry, I was late to the party but I'm here now.
I throw my cast net with several different methods, but the one you are using now is very similar to my go-to method, it's usually referred to as half-and-half, or the 50-50 technique, I do just a couple little things difference, but for the most part it's very similar.
I find it really interesting that bluegill and pumpkin seeds are sitting in the fast flow Like that.... I think alot of the literature on our native fish and their habitats is incorrect!!! Very cool
Not incorrect just not updated. A lot of the information is still most definitely relevant. But yes we have witnessed wild life all over doing things we did not know. But that can also be argued that wild life is adapting and evolving to survive in harsher conditions. That's also nature at its best.
If you love carp and ur anywhere near southwest Michigan for any odd reason the Allegan lower dam access has the biggest carp in it last few times ive fished there ive caught one everytime typically ranging from 10 to 30 lbs and massive channel catfish as well as steelheads drums and a few bass
You need to fold large nets. Loosely loop your rope. Grab the top of the net. With the other hand grip under your top hand and slide down about a third of the length. Grab it and pull up to the top and grip. Then you can grab the weights and swing cast It will open correctly. Bigger the net the more folds you need.
Hey my dude, if you want some advice for cast netting, if you're throwing a bigger net just do a light spin to get some momentum going for the net and let it just roll out of your fingers it will slide into a perfect pancake every time, nice videos my man I love the cast net videos ☺️

Great stuff! Don't worry you're not the only one that does catch and release cast netting, I very frequently get what I need, and then keep throwing just to see what I can get, sometimes it can be more fun than conventional fishing to me.
@smelltheglove2038 OK so here's another side of it, there's a very popular crappie fishing spot at a lake near my house, I went there one day to pick up some bait for my catfishing needs, there was lots of guys fishing for crappie and everyone could see crappie busting the water, but nobody was catching anything, after I threw my casting net for the very 1st time we all understood why! It was loaded down so heavy with shad I could barely pull it up on the dock, I had enough shad with one throw for all of my needs for the day, and enough to freeze a few for future fishing trips, and several other fishermen come up and ask if they could have some for their catfishing needs also, but what it told us was the reason why the crappie weren't biting is because they all had their stomachs full of shad. Throwing a casting net can tell you things about the ecosystem you are fishing that rod and real fishing could never tell you! Remember we only kept what was going to be used for bait everything else got released.
@smelltheglove2038 I agree that it is wrong if you are keeping them, but if you are turning them loose and just exploring the water that you are fishing in I don't see anything wrong with it.
You are also pulling and tightening your net too early. Let it sink a little bit longer (5 or 6 seconds) and things will get better once you get the throw and spread better.
@Dominic W.G I ended up blocking him for spamming really obnoxious stuff across multiple videos and, unfortunately, RUclips erases all of a person's comments from a page when you block them.

In Australia if you land a Carp, you can be fined for throwing it back. They are classed as vermin here and when lakes get low, fishermen and environment people go out wading to catch them.
This is a technique you have to practise a lot, But youre net is a XXL and makes it more difficult to trow it nisely spread open. If it is nicely spread open makes a lot of different in catch; BTW Carp is realy verry special fish. If they grow big , they a lot of fun to catch when they are 20 or 40 pound . In my country it is forbitten to yuse a castingnet. Just have it with you is alreddy forbitten. doh I think its verry usefull to catch a lot of small fishes in few time. Amazing vid like always

Hey man. Love the vids! How do you find your spots? I know as a fisherman you won't outright reveal them but I would like to know your thought process like do you look at maps or is it just random or living in the area for so long
I'm on Google maps for about three hours a day, I study the water around Houston pretty obsessively. A lot of it is trial and error (lots of trips don't make it to film) but I'm always looking for certain features: spillways, pools forming eddies, slow moving creeks or channels with steep banks, confluences, etc. And I also always think from the film perspective, "what species can I catch there?" "what are the odds I can catch a minimum of at least three good fish?" "what will the scenery in frame look like?" "what will the thumbnail look like?" and "what can I possibly title it based on what might happen?" I know the film stuff doesn't apply to everyone but it's part of how I personally decide on a spot.
I know it's not safe nor am I encouraging anyone to do this however if you go to the center of that bridge at the top and drop your net down let it hang fully extended give it a few spins before you let it go it will make a perfect pancake cast every time and catch loads of bait
10:27. You folded the net correctly prior to throw. That's what your aiming for. Little less than half folded on a 6 foot holding semicircle. Nice. Should be a skill everyone should learn.
Make that swing with youre right hand; and wright afther that swing you let it all lose. But the better the swing the more open and round it fals in the water. You can do it ! YES you can ! ;-)

About the time the bass spawn the carp will.
