Spun bearing at 10.5k miles on my 23' wrx. Oil changed at 1k miles. 4k, 7k, and 10k. Those #1 most reliable studies dont mean shit when the one issue i have had occur is a spun bearing and my car is in the shop for 2 months getting a new shortblock and turbo. "Must have just been a wrx produced on a friday at 4:30p" - Subaru
Pre-detonation on my ‘15 FA20 at 80k miles spin a bearing and broke a rod. Oil changes every 5k, always warmed and cooled down before/after harsh acceleration. The ECU tune had 2 recalls in the first year of that motor for fuel mapping on the WRX and the Forester XT… the stock tune was shotty, the con-rods are angled instead of 90°. They’re fragile. If you romp on ‘em enough, they’ll knock even when stock.

@@brofessorhemlock4817 Yeah bummer dude, I literally lost $8k on one pull… had some equity in it and wanted to sell it because of this very concern, but the dealership bought it back from me for what I owed on it because I didn’t want to go down the road of letting Subaru look into the extent of damage and repairs for warranty consideration. I just cut my losses and moved on. It was the funnest car I’d ever owned up tho that point, Wife loved it and it would rip up some mountain roads with a fury, but I was always concerned in the back of my mind that if I kept it too long it would bite me, and it did. Great chassis and great 4season daily if you baby ‘em, but with it being the first year of the FA20… I knew I was in for a gamble. Yours is under warranty though right? So not too much of a financial burden there, just the time and hassle of getting buttoned back up?

@ “Zero engine problems”. Not even a single engine light to date. I’m the original owner and all maintenance was up to date. Those head gasket problems were fixed decades ago. People just can’t get over it for some reason. Lol
Subarus are damn great cars, people just tend to abuse the heck out of them not knowing what they're doing. My '05 Outback XT has 237K miles and it still going.

Watched all the way! Watch many of your WRX. Have an orange 2022, tempted but not gonna tune. Want an accessport but don't want to void the warranty. I am 59 and just now getting into WRX. Had a 350 and 370z.

Watched through to the end. I sure hope you're right, because this guy didn't buy any extended warranty and traveled out of state to purchase, so the lifetime powertrain warranty went out the window by not having it regularly serviced at the purchasing dealer. It brings a smile to my face each time I drive it sitting all stock.

Most everyone (with a pair) is going to lose their warranty anyway. With the eyesight and other nanny features removed and driving more than 85mph recorded on the ecu they're going to lose theirs too. You don't buy a Jap sports car for the warranty you buy it because it doesn't need a warranty.
Turbo engines aren’t meant to be trashed, those with issues is mostly the way they are driven/used
Yes and no, sportscars are designed to be driven! But also, care makes up the vast majority of it!
People always say something like this but how does someone who isn't an expert mechanic truly know if they are treating it right? I do oilchanges on my stock 2023 wrx every 5k (manual says 6k and I'm not tracking it but I occasionally drive sorta fast in the country roads) and I do other maintenance as it is called for per mileage. I've never stalled, I never launch it I always roll into it even when flooring it in 1st... but if I were to do a tune with no mods or a tune with a intake and just do more frequent oil changes, would that count as "treating it right"?
@@artemlobov4239That’s one part of taking care of a turbo cars, doing frequent oil changes. Other recommended things to do are using the recommended fuel octane level.
In this video the RUclipsr recommends that if you tune your car, it’s best to already have experience about tuning your car. I would at least research about tuning your car right.
If you don’t feel comfortable tuning your car yourself but, still want a tune you should research for a reliable tuner that has experience with tuning WRX’s. Lowering the possible chance for something to go wrong.
Some good tuners will recommend you with tips on what oil weight to use, and maybe recommend how often oil should be changed .

I dig the part about getting crushed by lightning fast EVs and tesla model 3 dual motors. The thing is, those cars are boring asf. I was on the highway one day and this EV pulled up next to me and started flooring it and slowing down to show the torque power EV can do. I didn't entertain him at all. Instead I moved over to the extreme opposite end of my lane and hit the brakes so everyone behind can see I'm not part of this meth head EV driver's charade.
Long story short we coincidentally take the same exit, he takes the ramp then me. Not only that we end up at the same light. Instead of gunning it to show me ONCE AGAIN how much torque it has, he knows I'm not interested because of how I braked away from him on the highway. Instead what happens is I accelerate slowly and enjoy rowing through the gears. Ngl I lowkey hoping that reminded him to feel bored asf in his one pedal wonder.
The thing about EV is it's boring asf. That's why this meth head is on the highway acting like a clown with random strangers. With EV, you press the pedal and go forward. In a wrx you have a clutch pedal, guages to monitor, and all that. You never get bored. You never feel the need to act like a meth head to quell EV induced boredom.
Agreed I just drove an EV for 1st. My brother rented a Mustang 🤢Mach E. Way faster than my 22 BRZ but as exciting as a microwave. Never had a car impression be so ‘meh’ didn’t even hate it. Just zero emotion.

All the way through, lol. I was a solid Toyota guy, until the Dealers did us dirty on the GRC. Bought my 22 in 23. Love watching your content keep them coming. Current mods are ETS Intake, Charge Pipe, Intercooler, Rae's I Pipe, Remark catback, and BBK. Waiting on installing the STi Trans, and FMIC.

It is not Subaru as a whole. But, instead most reliable not counting the turbo model cars. According to HeavyMetal.

Reliability reports are always qualitative in their quantitative nature, meaning they are collected to suit the result. But with that said, that just means that other larger FA issues were looped into the collected data, so it's even more impressive
My 17' is the best car I've ever owned. It's stock. It's well maintained by the dealership. The inside's a little tore up because I spend up to 4 hours a day in it because I work construction and I don't beat on it either.

It's almost as if, once Toyota took up a stake in Subaru, and said "Hey, we're going to put these FA motors in our GR86," Subaru engines became comparable regarding reliability with Toyota.
It's an entirely subaru developed engine that was in production before that came to fruition, but I would also say when you start pulling the FA apart, it fights against some core kaizen ideals that toyota lives by

I had a 2.0T accord, sold it for a boring car. Now looking to get into practical fun manual AWD car. The 2022+ WRX seems like the one. Good Tuning potential is a huge plus, 300-350 awhp seems like the sweet spot for a daily driver in New England.
yeah it's quite easy to hit the 350whp mark and struggle to find places to use it

What I don’t understand is why all these car brands are pushing EV’s. Because all I hear is complaints, yet the manufacturers see enough profit to keep pushing them.
there is a massive class on economics here... but top down everyone including the manufacturer is incentivized to make them regardless of their consumer based, and then it's a game of sales application and transition.
don't get a weighted shiftknob! and change your differential fluid before the recommended time if you drive hard! had a 2018 for 80k miles and she ran perfect, early oil changes and spark plugs! just got a 2020 about to install a grimmspeed intake, charge pipe, top mount, 3 port boost solenoid, bypass valve, and cobb inlet and was recommended on reddit to get an AOS as well.
Why no wieghted knob?

A weighted shift knob causing issues is more of a wise tail! In theory it is true, kind of, but is dwarfed by the weight and force of a human hand and arm, let alone one that is excited to shift. A weighted shift knob will be completely fine!
@@AutoEnthusiast my buddy had an ashiko from raceng it was 700 i think and when he got his diff fluid changed they discovered a bunch of metal shavings which they said was due to added stress from the shiftknob so he took it off, just be careful! and i think it's wives tale lol
The lack of manual transmission offerings anywhere else in their lineup is what turns me off. Not to mention the look of the new ones.
in terms of the transmissions, Subaru's produce more manuals than most brands at this point. I think it's just how the times are changing
You are probably right but only on the crosstrek, WRX, and maybe… maybe the Impreza but I doubt it. What I really want is a standard model of the Outback or Legacy, which to my knowledge is not offered and hasn’t been for some time now. Just CVT options which I’m sure are better than they were 10 years ago but the driving experience I’m sure is just as lackluster as any other CVT currently available on the market.
yeah but you aren't going to find that anywhere, companies can't make money with them and they won't meet fleet standards in the US.
I've had a few Subarus in the past. I've always been impressed by their winter driving prowess. They're all wheel drive system has always been pretty much bulletproof for me personally. I now own 23 WRX base model and I am thrilled with it. I'm 62 years old so there's no reason for me to want to modify it. I find it plenty exhilarating all on its own. It performs very well and corners nicely. I change my oil every 3,000 mi and am meticulous about maintenance. But I will say that it starts getting bumpy about the same speed that a Porsche starts smoothing out. About 90 mph. But we're talking about a 30,000 car vs. a $70,000 car.
wider wheels, coils, and a few aero parts and that float feeling wheel stretch to much much higher speeds.
coils alone will stretch the speed to much much higher speeds the other 2 amount to 10% of what coils can do
^^^ true, when you spend decent money on coils. Budget coils need a wider wheel base. Short answer, get good coils and it will solve all problems
I'm still just so torn on tuning or not. I'm happy with the stock power, coming from a 2007 camry hybrid and before that a mazdaspeed mx5 its the fastest car I've ever had, obviously I'd be even happier if it had more power but I don't know if tuning it to like 300whp would be worth whatever reliability I'd give up years from now when something happens I'd regret it at that time and feel like I should have stayed stock, but at the same time it doesn't seem like it's really any sketchier than stock anyway... certainly when I pass 60k miles I'd tune it but till then just don't know what to do
tune it and drive it likes its stock lol. I mean most of us do that and these things are fine!
My 21 wex goes in for a new shortblock under warranty. 51k for oil consumption but it's been super reliable besides burning just over a quart of oil in 1200 miles. Most likely my fault since it's my first ever stick car and I learned stick on it. I love this car and hope now they I know how to drive stick this one will last a lot longer
Don’t kick yourself, sometimes things happen! I think that because as a community we are more in tune, we hear about the outliers like this! Hopefully all goes well!

I don’t know why that people just jump into comments to hate on a car. I have a BRZ and in every comment section someone brings up oil starvation issues. Look if you don’t like a certain car fine but why waste your time leaving a snarky comment. If they cared they would say it needs a baffled oil pan to track it.

I love my VB. Only 600 miles on it so far so I’m taking it easy. Will do an oil change around 2500 miles. A catback is really all I care to do at least until the powertrain ends. I think anyone who likes the peace of mind should also do the same.
You want to do oil change at 1k miles that’s the first break in oil change then every 3k miles

Ngl, gonna be posting a vid "reviewing" my VB that I've had for 2 and a half years. Quite a few bolt ons and probably making over 400hp. Even with how often I push the car boost wise (19psi at peak boost) and under this setup for a year, car has not given me any issues.

@@AutoEnthusiast All 3 of mine snapped flush with the turbo. Wound up having to replace it. Unfortunately, no turbo upgrade to go with it due to a lack of funds.

Can you talk about the way the CVT drives. I have been driving manual for a really long time and I am considering moving to the CVT version due to better overall all wheel drive better central diff and better final gear ratio.
Unpopular opinion, there is no difference in the old butt and hand dynos other than feeling less connected with the car as a whole. For some people, it's the best decision of their life, some they regret it and end up selling the cvt after 6 months. I would do two things, rent an auto car for two weeks and see if you miss the manual, and then go to a car meet and find someone with a cvt WRX and have them drive you around. You will have pretty clear direction after that!
Just test drive one at a dealership. I did and my opinion was in sharp# or S mode vs just normal mode I felt like I was in two different cars. Normal mode had sort of your typical rubber band-ish type feel and take off from normal acceleration and everyday driving. Once I switched to S or S# it turned into a different car. Acceleration was much quicker and felt like I was driving a normal automatic transmission, definitely the best feeling CVT I have driven. Car handled great and acceleration was more than enough to get you going. The only thing I'd knock is the ride quality as the chassis is pretty stiff so the ride can be jarring if you drive on crappy roads. I've also driven manual for a good 25 years of my life and I'm over the constant shifting in traffic and all the hills I deal with. Definitely take one for a spin at the dealership and try all the driving modes.
16k on mine tuned. 360HP/370TQ. I autoX and track it. zero issues so far. This thing is a beast in the corners! I love this car!

agree with the video and the memes can be funny but I get what you're saying. Be careful putting too much stock into "subaru is the most reliable brand" statement though. That recent report was only for the past year, only included newer models (not the wrx), and was a *consumer* survey study. So yes we'd expect owners of 2 year old cars to not have issues.

Made it all the way through! Love your content. I had an FRS 10 years ago, no issues. Now I have a VB that’s FBO and all I’ve done is listen to the advice tuners and creators have given. 22K miles and the car doesn’t miss a beat. It absolutely comes down to just keeping up with maintenance and not driving it like you’re in a rally stage every day. Car is around 350/350 WHP/TQ, maybe a little more in the NH cold

@AutoEnthusiast you do not talk about the 2022-2023 WRX’s issue where sealant in the oil pan would get in the oil, and possibly harming the engine.
Is this still an issue for the 2024+ WRX’s. Did you know of this issue, because you have a 2022 WRX.
I don't think at this point there is an issue with using RTV, i mean i say that with an asterisk, but we haven't really seen any failures from it

I am not going to, I might look when I change my oil next, but no one is really reporting any long term issues.

Who says they are unreliable? That's not a comment I've seen a lot of in the few months I've owned and researched my VB. Older engines with valve spring and head gasket problems, well, ok. But I've heard zero complaints about the VB outside of the info screen, which really is a disaster.
basically anyone outside of the subaru world.... it's nuts, try going to a car meetup with a Subaru lol

I'm new to subaru/tuning and I want to do a "conservative" pro tune on my 23 wrx. I've read about the DAM and its kinda putting me off. How often am a I really going to have to worry about it? Im I overthinking and should just sending it and get it tuned?
get it tuned! Literally don't sweat it. Buy an intake, and then head over to Dmann tuning. You will be fine! Email me if you have any issues or questions, because you should 100% do it if you are contemplating it. Check out my video on DAM!

Not saying the WRX is not reliable but that most reliable brand data didn't include the WRX. So yes Subaru is now the most reliable car not including the WRX. To be fair I'm pretty sure no make or model "sports car" was included in the data
I mean ill go out and say it, I think this gen WRX may be more reliable than the fleet average
WRX is known to be modified and beat on. Probably why the WRX didn’t make the cut on the list. However, other vehicles with the same exact motor made it on the list. The ascent have a FA24 with a turbo and that car made the list. Why? Because no one is modifying the ascent lol. As he mentioned the stock FA20/24 are very very solid motors stock and can be reliable tuned if tuned properly and maintained properly.
My 05 STI is about to break 160k miles I don't think it's gonna make it to 200k miles

While other channels were making people want to buy a VB and grow the community you were making it seem like it wasn't a great car. I have stalled when not paying attention, I am probably a few 100 miles over what I should change my oil at, etc. These cars are designed to deal with people that don't give two cents about their car and still expect it to run. To an extent. Any mechanic or engineer that says you have to follow a fine line for long term ownership doesn't know the first thing about how a car is designed. Just my two cents as a mechanical engineer in the automotive industry lol. Whatever you do is likely fine, and from what you are saying it is more than fine.
Pull up the right gear dumping a clutch in the wrong gear revved for boost will break things sorry not rocket science for an experienced Man 6 transmission

I drove a 2002 wrx for 16 years, in the snow, before it rusted out. Looked at new ones but just hated the way they felt. The shifter when new sounded clunky and horrible. Hated that screen. Picked up a modded 2004 for under 7k. No rust. Drives great.
can't stand all the extra plastic on the body of the new wrx. i'm sure the new fa24 is a good engine but the body of the car isn't appealing to me. that's just me. sticking to my '18 sti
I felt that way until owning one, and I much prefer it in person these days! It takes time to grow on you!
I made it through the end of your video! My wife and I both bought black 2024 Limited 6-speed WRXs on Black Friday. She was already and Subaru fan as she had a 2021 Crosstrek (also 6-speed) that she traded for $18.5k (she paid $22k new in February 2021). I have a Honda Accord Coupe 6-6 w/202k miles that I can’t bring myself to sell and am using it to absorb miles to stretch the warranty. When mine finally reaches the end of warranty I want to do a fairly conservative tune (+40hp or so). Do you know if there is a tune that does require any hardware changes? My biggest surprise about this car is how nice of a highway cruiser it is: Very stable, fairly quiet, can still accelerate in 6th but engine is still relaxed (revs around 3000rpm @80mph). My only complaint is that I wish the stick exhaust was a little quieter, especially on cold starts.

I highly highly recommend at the very least throwing on an intake and then taking it to someone like DMann to give it a quick tune!
I really enjoy you informative channel I just purchased two 2024 Subaru's WRX for me & a Crosstrek for my wife we live in Northern Minnesota we had 2 Mini Cooper S cars the Subaru is a great car - I owned a 1974 DL back in the 70's .

EJ engines are not reliable. 3 of my buddies blew their engines. 2 WrX and one STI all low miles under 50k.
Thanks for making this video! The other videos that I've watched on Subaru reliability usually leave out the WRX. Glad to know that I made an excellent investment in my 2022 WRX 💪🏽

I don’t disagree when you were talking about EVs, as a guy who sells the Solterras (one today actually haha) it’s torque experience is just not as fun as standard combustion torque. I seriously get more giddy when I step on my WRX or an Outback’s XT pedal.
I have too many buddies that would gap a 600hp WRX in their plug ins, I hate it haha
Good topic. I got a 15 wrx manual, Zero issues and I 100% agree with you. Toyota lost the top spot due to issues with new hybrid tech I believe.
I don't think toyota has necessarily had more issues, I think other brands are just having less
I had a 2023 Genesis g70 3.3. I was faster than 99% of cars on the road. Just making the point that the wrx is still a lot of fun and I’m not rushing to get any mods.
That's how I feel when I'm in my IS F. I actually raced a gensis & walked him on the highway lol
Stayed all the way through...i agreevabout the relability. Even going back to the 2004-2007 STI' s they are incredibly reliable...the engine will take more than enough spirited driving and more highly developed mods are available now then when they newer..with a tune and following maintenance they will just keep going and going. GD's in good condition are pretty much collectors items now too. The new WRX's are awesome, I'm thinking an STI version is going to be back probably in 2026..just seems like they are pivotingbin that direction again with the trim levels they are offering on the new wrx's.

Keep in mind the mid 2000's and up wrx's anD STI'S WERE always above average reliability,, but back then many drivers bought them to mod, and often without a compatible tune or no tune and ended up spinning rods or breaking pistons. And generally just driving them to race and didnt treat them well..that gave them a reputation for being"delicate"..here's the thing though..the GD's that werent subjected to that treatment are still driving on their original engines and transmissions ...TODAY! GD owner here original engine cobb accessport and 3" downpipe....never a failure ..general.maintenance only for 16 years now..

I'd argue the older wrxs weren't unreliable. I drove a 2002 for 16 years. Only real issue was valve cover gaskets. The issue is the owners.
Right after I bought mine I took it to the track and launched it at 6k. A guy came up to me and said "these are the best cars in the world. But you CANT abuse them. I've been a mechanic for them for 20 years"
I think it more came from the only issues generally being issues that meant motor work, versus BMWs that might need a water pump type thing

Fa20 motor was trash! I hated that engine so much. I had to get oil seals replaced at 35k. Whole motor tear down and rebuild. And the tune on that motor was horrible in every car

FA20 is trash compared to the FA24. FA20 = EJ205….FA24 = EJ257. IMHO the FA24 is the best WRX motor to date…just needs more time to prove it. I’ve owned EJ205, EJ255, EJ257, FA20, now FA24.
@@AutoEnthusiaston a different/ not hot take. The FA20 motor was goated, never had any of those issues. Sitting at 56k miles with 0 issues. Just regular maintenance, a walnut blast job at 50k and rocking the stock tune and a Cobb stage 1 tune every now and then. I just wish it had the UEL rumble like the EJ
How hard did you drive it
I am not sure it’s possible to dog the fa20 and love the fa24 because although there are some differences, it’s just the big brother version. Much of it is the same in many ways. Don’t get me wrong, the fa24 is great, but I am also a pretty big fan of the fa20!

I own a '24 WRX. Sitting at almost 2500 miles. Bought in october with 25 miles for 33k. Came with sti short throw package. If this car can get me to 150k miles without ANY problems - my initial worry & overall sentiment will change. Never been a slowbaru fan. Always mitsubishi.
