    First off, love your work and your vids. Im a garage door installer/general contractor/painter(yes i wear many hats). Personally id remove the weatherseal, or replace them with a similar colour or a complimentary colour to which is being painted. The new paint on the rubber is gonna fail and its gonna look like crap. When i paint doors i use BM's Corotech Command. Itll stick to anything(including your gun if you dont clean it fast enough) and the return to service is 24hrs but its completely dry in an hour or so depending on temp/humidity. This allows me to paint the whole door because garage doors dont always return to the exact same spot as there is some sideways movement(some more than other depending on the installer) so you may see the old colour. Another reason i prefer to change the weather seal is because what is there already is usually crap and i only use premium, heavy duty weather seal.
    Just my 2 cents as someone who works in overlapping trades

    I prefer no extension for garage doors, i find i have better control of the spray pattern.
    Thats just me.
    Plus I remove the weather stripping.
    Everyone has there way.
    Thanks for the video, very informative.

    Before you prep paper. Do you sand it and then pressure wash then wait for it to dry then paint?

  • @stevenmichael6161

    Question: How much weight (after drying) do you think the paint adds to the double door?
    I know it sounds ridiculous to worry about this on a door that probably weighs about 300lbs. However, the torsion springs counter act this weight so that the door is balanced to within a few pounds.
    Thanks!

      @touchperception 8 месяцев назад

      It shouldn’t be a lot of weight at all. A garage door takes about 3/4 of a gallon and remember it’s evenly spread out throughout the door.
      I would say it’s almost a non factor.

    I love your videos and your extensive knowledge. Can you explain why you switched from SW Duration to BM for exterior as your preferred stucco paint? Is SW still a good choice? Different circumstances?

    • @Idahopainter
      @Idahopainter  8 месяцев назад +1

      SW has a few good paints and a lot of bad paints. BM has a lot of good paints and few bad paints. Duration is a great paint but a disaster if the temps are below 50. BM Aura is the best exterior paint I have ever used.

    Great content, love the channel. Quick question, did you do anything to prep the door for painting…meaning do you need to sand or prep the surface in some way so that the paint adheres better?

    • @Idahopainter

      Yes I did. Pressure wash with a rotating nozzle.

    Hey there Mr. Idaho Painter!!! Did you check pattern on the door prior to spraying it out. Or did you check spray pattern on something else first just in case there was fingering or something?

    Great tips, once again. I've watched a lot of your videos, and you offer up a lot of good advice. I'm not a painter, but am a skilled tradesman. I bought a Graco X5 airless sprayer, and using the tips you've given, plan to paint the house. I think my biggest concern, is I know practice makes perfect and there is no substituting experience. You guys make it look so easy. It's that experience that lets you deal with something going wrong, as it is happening. Do you have any specific things that I could expect to have to deal with, on the fly?

      This guy isn’t a great sprayer, he talks about how he got spitting all over the door…. I bet when it drys you will see flashing and tails all over the door….
      One video he takes sprayer from his worker and melts the door with the sprayer and gets runs…. You can see it in his face when he realizes it. He is a RUclipsr more then he is a painter or “PNTR” as he spells it. 🤡
      Good luck with your project, spraying exterior is a good way to start learning.

    Plus the proper way to paint something.Paint a garage door in the beginning.Before it's been painted, it's always to give 2 Coats.That's what the can specces two coats. Just because you can do it in one and it looks alright doesn't mean that it's done the right way. With two coats you get longer u v protection as well.

  • @jesserademacher598

    Well when spraying a garage door you shouldn't be using a two foot wand you get better control without a wand and you will end up using less paint and have less oversprey in the air.

  • @evictioncarpentry2628

    I would personally take the weather stripping off and paint the whole door.
    What i would then do is take some kind of clear epoxy coating and tape of the 1-2 inch spot where the weather stripping ride so its wear resistant. And then probably wipe the weather strip down with a silicone/graphite or dry wax lubricant.
    Leaving it a seperate color looks like crap. Its like paint a car a different color and leaving the door jambs the original one. Garbage.

    And they've never questioned it because obviously they trust you but at the same time me being a painter. If you tried to pull that on me, I would call you a hack and being lazy like all your excuses are just like lazy excuses. I don't do it because I don't want to bend over. I don't want to paint that because I use really cheap paint and it'll peel off. That's what I'm hearing and I've been a painter for 23 years. I paint everything from new construction homes to multi-million dollar homes to vehicles to gas tanks. You pick it and I can stick it and it's all about using the proper paint. And in painting you need to bend over and reach that's your job. Giving faulty advice on how to spray a garage door. Cover all the cars next door to the house too.Because you're using that 2 foot 1.It just repels it like all over in the air.Way more than when you're not using a wan. I tell you every time I watch a painter.Try to give tips on how to paint.I'm always disgusted because they give faulty bad advice.Twenty 47 this video is prime example.

  • @jesserademacher598
    @jesserademacher598 8 месяцев назад

    I don't believe that you've never gotten over spray either.I think you're generalizing to the point of absurdity especially using a two foot wand. You put so much overspread the air.It's unreal using a wand. That's a hundred percent fact

  • @jesserademacher598
    @jesserademacher598 8 месяцев назад

    Okay. So now what you're stating about not rolling the side where the garage door closes and it's sticking. It does that because you didn't allow it proper dry time. So you're talking about doing a lazy job like literally? Your points of why you don't do it are not satisfactory points. It's you being lazy in doing a proper job. When you paint those sides, you let the paintfully dry before closing the garage door and then you don't have that happen plus you need to use a quality paint, not the paint that you are using because then it will happen, and that is why that paint is garbage..
