Picking up my camera at 54 after not having one since the early ‘90s, reawakening an old passion, and launching a part time photography gig in the new year - I needed this video. Mahalo. ❤️

A thing on the "P" mode, many pros also shoot in Aperture Priority mode as well. I started as a "M" only mode just to learn about light, (doing mostly artistic landscapes), but now I do a lot either in P or AP mode. Great discussion and video Vanessa! ❤

VJ, Love your zoom with Joe B, I love his view on capturing the moments of the day for his clients!
I too have become a bit emotional at some of my weddings!! its the impath in me!

It's great to see Joe still loving what he does. I burned out in 1991, put my 500CM on a shelf and it's still there. The business end of wedding work killed it for me. I haven't been able to pick up a camera since. Keep shooting.
I wrote the above midway through the video before you showed Joe's work. 5 minutes in I'm back to 30+ years ago, the brides and grooms I have met, and captured.. I literally have a tear in my eye, I so sorely miss this.

Thanks so much for introducing me to Joe Buissink! I'm a Fantasy Art-Portrait Photographer and just listening to Joe speak of his passion, makes me want to really think in-depth about my own photography! So very inspiring! And I also want to say thank you Vanessa, you are always bringing fresh ideas & information and "you" inspire me.

HUGE!!!! "I wish people would start to pay attention to what they capture in the camera, rather than thinking about what they can fix." GOLD!!!! | No such thing as a perfect picture, only a perfect moment.... I LOVE THIS!!!!! Thank you very much Vanessa, this was so inspirational.... I had never heard of Joe before today and I just saw your photo challenge with him, which had me going down the rabbit hole of everything Joe now. What a GREAT Guy, I was so moved by this interview.

@@VanessaJoy I am so tempted to drive up to Venice from San Diego to meet him. I love his philosophy, I developed the same one coming from shooting photos from my church plays. I too wanted to share the BTS and the story behind the show.... I accidentally took that over into weddings I have captured. He seems to be a wonderful man to sit and chat with. I did giggle a bit, you reminded me of myself when I met you at WPPI....as you met him in the video holding his camera... awe struck, excited, and happy to be in their presence. I love these interviews of icon photographers... I learn so much! Keep these going, because the stories are important.

You guys get a phone calll? Haha I'm a wedding videographer and no one wants to speak to me at all. Just book and move on. I force a call a month before the wedding to go over schedule stuff and expectations... I'd love to do that first, but if I made that a requirement, I might as well sell my gear and start applying for jobs.

Some real nuggets in this - Johannnes desire to be 'different' really resonates with me; especially now. Artistic creativity and not following the 'norm' is crucial - especially now where everyone thinks they are a photographer

I still have my medium format and 2, 35mmSLR in my dry cabinet.. now that film is on rise I am hoping to get a few roll of transparency film and relive the moment. I also did my own E6 processing.

How have I never heard of Joe before? Absolutely awesome video Vanessa! "P" mode, not a fan of heavy editing or "spray and pray" shooting, and best of all, he's more of the "photo sniper" type of photographer. He's like the WORLDS more experienced, 20 year older version of myself. 😂 I will definitely be looking him up on Instagram and his website. I can understand why you love him so much. Very inspirational story from top to bottom. Thank you.

I am still a relative beginner, used P mode only for the first few days. I prefer aperture priority to get pictures the way I like. I try to use as low an ISO as I can (preferably not higher than 2000) without my shutter speed going too low for the lens (and focal length) I am using. It suits what I like to shoot most: architecture and other quirky things on the street. I shoot stuff that catch my fancy and make me feel amazed or happy.

Love this so much. I wish I would have caught it live to ask questions. My passion is capturing life in the moment but it can be tricky. I would love to know how you (Joe)go from someone calling you (like Anne) to hire you to talking money. What does that conversation look like? You are feeling bleesed to be able to do it but also know you must earn a living.
