First video of yours I've watched. Questions: Your first wedding was? How did you get involved in it? Was that something you always wanted to do? What equipment did you use? Thank you!
Hey! My first wedding was 21 years ago or so and I worked for my high school photography teacher who did weddings on the weekends. I had come back to his classroom to use the high school's matte-cutter because my collage one sucked and he ended up hiring me after seeing the work I was bringing in. :-) I learned on a 35mm Canon A-1 (that I still shoot with today for fun) and have loved photography since I was 15 :-)
I admit that I haven't read all of these amazing comments so mine will undoubtedly replicate others but "THANK YOU" for sharing and allowing us wannabes a chance to see that even the masters have the same stresses and strains to accomplish the incredible and yet you do it with such confidence, command, and professionalism throughout. Just, "Thank You" .... you keep making these videos and I'll keep watching and learning!!!!!
I always love these pov wedding days and session videos. There always so much valuable information and I love seeing how everyone has a different take and way they plan and handle the day. There's always something to learn and incorporate and it's just so valuable
The album at the end, gave me so many ideas. Love the details you capture and the perfect moments. You run the show like a boss (in a good way). The editing in the church, daaang! I understand why you get booked solid. Thank you for this.
Found your channel. I wont be doing weddings however its always good learning what people use and tricks of the trade. I have a Pentax k-50 with some good old lenses the F smc series. Way underrated but does an excellent job.
LOVE POV DAYS. Question on the first photo. What do you do when there is foot dirt or like these shoes...some type of stick on to help her through her day in the shoes?
That's awesome. If it was possible to go back in time, I'd hire you to do my wedding. How did your energy level survive that extended family portrait segment of the wedding? Whew! In general, what's the worst moment/biggest mistake you ever experienced or made at a wedding? Conversely, the best moment and biggest success you ever had? Maybe success is not the right way to put it. Maybe serendipity is a better choice. You know, where everything just fell into place better than expected. Settings for the family portraits were? ISO? Hey, that was great! Totally fantastic!
Thanks Joy surely a lot has been learned today, i missed looking at your camera screen to see the camera settings during the creative shoots, when using the profoto in white umbrella
WOW! Thank you, what an awesome wedding and the album photos at the end show how it all came together in a stylish way. I would like to see more of how you set up lights on the dance floor (I did watch your other video on that too). With all that white reflective surfaces around, it would be great to know how you set your exposure and also white balance. I think that's all! :)
Thank you for this! I have been assisting a wedding photographer here in India and I was very curious how the workflow outside is. He uses a very similar kit, an R5 with a 35mm and an 85mm prime lenses as his main ones. Great video!
Hi Vanessa!!! I’d love to know what your wearing to capture this video!!! Are you shouting with a go pro? & what strap are you using to hold the camera on you?
I finally have an answer for you about my camera strap! creative-teacher-9768.ck.page/1fb5eeedd8 this will be VERY limited so lmk here if you want to know when it's available!
Thanks for sharing, I learned a so much from the video. It's so great learning from such a great photographer. This video was so hands on and wish more photographers would do this more often. I would of loved to see some of the actual wedding, even though it's the most intimate part of the couples day. Thanks you again for sharing.
Thank you very much for sharing such an amazing job. You made this look like a stress free day. Really inspiring poses. I would be curious to see the light set up used during the celebration, Thank you !!!
So cool the edit in the church hahhahaha it was super amazing. Can u tell me a few things like how did u manage to transfer all the photos in your phone ? What mobile r u using?? Things like that.....
Great video! One question 26:30 you start editing the photos, how you get the photos on your mobile phone ? Is this connected to your camera ? Thank you 🙏🏼 😊
Love these videos, as I’ve just booked my first wedding. Question: If you had to choose only one to bring, RF100 macro or EF 135 f/2? I know you’ve said you love both.
all depends on the lighting in the room. If I'm working with my husband, I'll use just the video lights sometimes! Othertimes I'll need ocf in a dark room with dark ceilings and walls - and if I can I'll bounce flash off of lightly colored walls
Vanessa, or anyone that caught it, you load your images to LR via Wifi from your camera. What platform are you using to have people scroll the photos and share them on the iPad? Loved that tip and of course, can't seem to find it now that I'm looking for it!
Absolutely fantastic Vanessa. Did they tell you to turn off your GoPro during the service? I wish photographers that charge 300.00 for a wedding watch this and see how much hard work really goes into shooting a wedding, then you put in hours of editing. Great work.
Thanks so much ☺️ No they didn’t tell me to turn it off - I just had recently gopro’ed a different church ceremony so figured I’d save battery on this one 😂
Awesome content! It helps so much to see how your handle the big day. I'm a photographer attempting to make it a full time. Right now I have the r5 with the rf 70-200 2.8, the ef 50 1.2 and the ef 100 macro. I've been thinking about selling my ef gear and getting the rf 28-70 2.0 or rf 50 1.2. But having such a hard time making up my mind. I have a feeling the 28-70 would be wiser due to not having the ability to go wider then 50mm right now. What do you think would be the best course for someone a year into the bisnuess, I normally shoot events, portraits and animal portraits. Thanks so much for being such a resource for us struggling and new photographer :)
Hey, I wanted to see if yourself or anyone in the comment section had any advise. I’ve been honing my skills in using a old canon 5d mkii for a while but would like to offer my services as a second shooter for some local photographers. I’m ready to upgrade my kit but want something that’s going to last a while I’ve narrowed it down to either a 2nd hand Canon 5d mk Iv ($1250) or a canon r8 new ($1500). What would be your choice?. Thank you in advance
how do you personally determine whether you're going to use flash or not during your shoots? I usually use my on camera flash for both the indoor detail shots as well as the initial bride photos. Maybe I just dont have the correct settings to not use flash.
I'd recommend watching this, not just listen to the audio (especially if you're British)! Otherwise, like me, you'll be wondering who Mary is and why she's always in the way, why the men are wearing suspenders and why their pants are too high 🤔😂
Weddings in my country are so different!! Nice to see the video but I could never, for example, be sitting during the ceremony editing pictures. In here we take pictures of every guest and not only bride maids and their companions. Its a different world
I can sit during communion bc after I photograph one or two people receiving, there’s nothing happening for a few minutes that my second photographer is t capturing ☺️
@@VanessaJoy I wish I could say that also. Christian ceremonies on a gothic church are long, boring and with so much protocol. Good thing is we have lots of castles and historic places in every city witch help a lot on photos and video (specially on the SDE) Loved to see your workflow on an actual wedding day. ;)
OK, so @ 28:00 outdoors with the giant shoot through umbrella...couple Q's; we're you shooting HSS while using it, and / or was it just there as a kicker fill flash to compensate? I'm sure I'll add more Q's later...LOL
Where exactly? In photo insiders?? Not a ton there now but lots coming. Right now there’s an Instagram course that’s pretty thorough, and a couple of marketing and branding hot seats too
Vanessa, don’t you miss the wider apertures? I know that you use a second, maybe the second got wider aperture lenses, and you are covered, but if you were alone, you never felt the need for a wider aperture lens?
@@VanessaJoy thanks for your prompt reply. You are truly gifted. Amazing style and proficiency. Just taking this opportunity and not wanting to take more of your time, why do you use the R3? I am going to get the R3 for weddings and amongst the many reasons, one of the main one is silent shooting.
It's really nice, lots of things to learn from here. I wish I would have worked with you as 2nd/3rd shooter!!! I wish!!!!!!! Love your work always. Take love
Wish I could back to that age and take up photography. Little old now. Not far from taking up permanent residence - with a camera of course - on boot hill. Love photography. Just do some news pics and cutlines for a small paper. No weddings though. People would look at me and laugh. Who's that old dude with a camera? You know, the one over there who fell down and landed face first in the grass. Thanks for the great videos and your answer! Can I be young again? Please!
One second photographer, and one assistant for an average 200 person wedding, and then sometimes I have a third photographer that is in training or is needed for just a couple reasons or larger wedding
Sometimes you just got to get the shot within a certain time frame. If you lose yourself in being creative you’ll lose the light or lose the clients interest. They have a timeline they have to stick to. You are constantly at the mercy of other things like if the makeup artist sucks all your time doing makeup so you have to wait forever just to have your time with the bride.
Such a huge contrast to the way we shoot in the UK, the amount of time you're spending on the group shots compared to the way we shoot here is huge!
