Great video. How would you be able to share settings? For instance, the Bride Getting Ready sequence. Seem like only available light is being used there. Is the ISO high in order to get "brighter" shots in focus?
Yes it is. ☺️ In my new membership site I’m going to be doing a voiceover for all of these videos that explain everything and why am doing it as I go through. Your control over the family photos is incredible. Remembering everyone’s names, getting an endless list of shots .. I would be stressed beyond belief.
Quick question...did you grid your two flashes during the reception? I keep (patiently) waiting for the voiceover video - more like checking every day to see if it's available lol. Super excited for that video and subscription opportunity but thought I'd ask while I wait. :-)
This is probably the best free piece of content any photographer can watch on YT. It is extremely helpful and informative for anyone in the wedding space. Up and coming photographers along with experienced photographers will all gain lots of knowledge and tips from this. I wish I had something like this when I started out.
This is fantastic! I know RUclips is really pushing hard on shorts, but my favorite videos here are "longs", so I appreciate what must have been an agonizingly long time waiting for uploading and processing.
I’m a year late to the party but this was truly incredible. You powered right through the day so efficiently with such finesse & confidence. You’re a true professional. On top of it all you made the entire process fun for the whole wedding party & boy do the results speak for themselves 🤩 This video will be an inspiration to many for years to come. Thank you!
Vanessa - I've seeing 100s of wedding photography videos and this one has to be the best one yet. You and your platoon of photographers and attention to detail is exceptional and without a doubt - professional. Thank you for display and sharing. Definitely keeping this as a reference vide.
I think this is fantastic. Absolutely love the longer format. I only shoot about 2 to 3 weddings a year on average, and love watching these longer types of videos because it shows the seemingly mundane in-between moments that are so important. For instance, unedited talking with the bride where you have the next shot in mind and how you’re moving towards getting that shot. Even that first detail shot of the vail where you just moved it while in conversation. 5:08 Boom! So much to learn from those in-between moments like that which are generally edited out for RUclips. Plus I think you’ll probably get more views since people will come back to this video. :) Fantastic. Wonderful. Thanks!
Thank you so so much for the kind words. I will definitely continue making videos like this and I love that you enjoy the nuances where it’s not active teaching but it’s things that you can actually teach, you can only observe and learn. ☺️
Your video brought back so many memories for me as I shot my last wedding back in 1985. My cameras of choice were the Mamiya C330 for most shots and a Mamiya RB 67 for all the portraits, each loaded with Kodak Vericolor (ASA 100) film. Man, those were the days.....loading & unloading film, using 200 watt-second speed lights and usually working alone. It was truly hard work for me but I loved it. Who would have thought then that modern cameras would auto focus, not require film, you could change the ISO easily and you could evaluate your images on the spot. Today is a wonderful time to be a creative with all the tools now available. Having several assistants doesn't hurt either. Thanks for sharing your process with us.
That was my Saturday evening viewing sorted. Enjoyed every minute. Although all the photos were brilliant I particularly liked the ones with the street art. Everyone must have been exhausted by the end of the day, such hard work. 🇬🇧🇺🇦🇺🇲✝️
Hi Vanessa. You are an amazing photographer and I want to thank you for sharing your professionalism to a photographer like my self that can learn a great deal from you. Please continue to bless us with your creative gift God has given you. Please don't pay attention to negative comments and focus on the people that appreciate your Talent!!. Again, Thank You !!, your behind the scenes was GREAT!!!
Great work Vanessa. It is clearly visible, the humongous effort you have put in, all through, to catch up every emotion, throughout the wedding and put it up in the right perspective. Great job. Keep it up. You are an inspiration to all.
Took me 3 days to watch it lol but so worth it thank you Vanessa. Their is so much I got out of this the main 2 that really stood out were family portraits and making sure to get everyone and small things in the background that are out of my control it’s ok just take the shot! I enjoyed it.
Couldn’t agree more. I love all the details. So much different than the approach my photographer had at my 1993 wedding. There were little, if any details and he didn’t plan on taking any getting ready pics🤦🏽♀️
Wonderful video for me have been asked to do a friend's wedding will be my 1st and this has given me so much confidence. One unusual question what batteries do you use in your flash. So wonderful
This content is so incredible, I’m not a wedding photographer (high school baseball, LEGOs and sort of travel) but the information presented I can see me using when I’m shooting almost every day. You amaze me each next video seems a level up from the previous. Can’t wait for the next.
Hi there, thanks for sharing this day of your of your work.shows a photographer perspective (that is not just taking pictures)there is a lot to do in the background.congratulations 👏👏 the album looks amazing!!
Vanessa- from a newer photographer to a more seasoned pro.... thanks for this BTS. As I was watching your POV I can artistically get your obsession now with the veil shots. I can see how you compose the shot before seeing the final "print" the low F stop just cleans out the background here. I still havent gotten to the reception shots I am just in aww of how you work with your clients and assistants and all the other venders to make the couples day amazing. I think you are the first photo/video crew that did the first look 3 separate times including the different reactions and giving them separate directions each time. I am going to have to stop by your speed posing guide after this those directions to your couple clicked for me. but one.... it was the one on the wooden door face to face hip to hip you were telling her about hip shape to make the gorgeous S curve with her dress from behind her. I maybe have to watch the scene to get it. and THANK YOU !!
Hi Vanessa, thank you for your great videos, a quick question I noticed that your skin tones are very nice and warm on your camera lcd screen, have you altered your white balance or other adjustments. Thanks
Yup. Two shooters using the same lights but also sometimes it’s off depending on your metering mode or if I’m photographing the bride in all white and then switch to a guest in all black
2:23:36 love this shot. I recently got into videography and am supposed to videograph a wedding in the fall. Any tips on how I get a creative shot with the veil? Or maybe one of the videographers from your team might have tips?
Very dynamic and comforting laughter. Such awesome skill. Thanks for sharing. One thing, it seems very windy to change lens all the time. How about 35mm and 85mm on two bodies combo.
YO..... VJ, Just watch your wedding day of again, WOW! saw the finished shots streamed at the end of this....very cool!! stunning shots with city in background! I learned a lot!
What an awesome video to see your process. Great work Vanessa! As a photographer and videographer, I enjoyed seeing how you and the videographer team worked together in lockstep as a single team. Some times you led, and at other times the video team led... or you each got your turn. This was nice to see.
Vanessa thank you for always giving us amazing content, education, ideas and inspiration! Whew! Weddings seem totally chaotic and fast, I'm clearly not a wedding photographer. I give kudos to you and your amazing team! Looking forward to more wonderful content. Thanks!
Great pictures. A lot of work. You did a great job. Back in the 1960's I work as an assistant to a photographer ., We did some weddings. But you really did a great job.
This was great! I used to shoot weddings, and it brings me back. Maybe I'll start doing that again... 🙂 You've got excellent skills and patience. And, of course, a great eye! The final album pages at the end are just stunning! You posted this on my birthday, so I'll consider it a gift. LOL! I look forward to the next time. Thanks for sharing this!
Hi Vanessa, one more question if you don't mind, how do you expose for the subjects using the back screen, do you use a histogram or the camera meter. Many thanks
The back of the screen is a somewhat accurate representation of the final image, but I do see my light meter there as well as check my Instagram and have highlight alert on when I play back the images to make sure I’m not blowing out highlights
Dear Vanessa, This video was a Master Class, at least for me. Yes I am a subscriber to all things V. Joy. I graduated from college focusing on journalism, but trained as a photojournalist. Instead of staying with still photos I ended up making more money as a video photojournalist in the news department of a television station. After a closet full of different association awards, 23 Emmy nominations, and 6 Emmy Awards later I’ve retired. Now I’m back where I started. Still photography. I guess I could just wonder off and shoot flowers, or birds, or buildings, or anything with no real end point in mind. Lately, I have become interested in informal portraits, boudoir, and wedding photography. It’s not my intent to get rich doing these disciplines. Yes this video is long. Yes, it is most definitely very detailed. I had to download this video from RUclips because every shot, every position, I couldn’t take notes fast enough. Yes, I’m making a bee-line to Speedposing.com. I would love to have some extra help that would allow me to concentrate more on the creativity. Like changing lenses or holding a reflector. Take for example “holding the acorn”. Whether this was intentional on your part or a nervous tick of the Bride’s it was a perfect distraction for that eternal question “what do I do with my hands”? Consider that little tidbit stolen. And Monica, the Bride’s sister (I’m assuming), was stop traffic flawless. And yes I know, she’s married so no disrespect is intended. I’ve shot weddings in the past as a second camera. I’ve created some videos upon request. As much as I really love the pomp and circumstance of weddings I’ve always, did I say always, found that there is always always always someone connected with the wedding party (bridesmaid, mother, wedding planner) that attempts to block every access to what has been discussed and signed off on by the groom and the bride ahead of time. Totally killing any creative mood, and becoming a total obstruction to coverage of the event that you get only one opportunity to capture. This is mainly why I stopped. Surely I digress. Thank you for creating this video. It had to have been a long day for everybody. I’ve got a ton of notes. I’d like to know more about how you determine your settings outside and especially for flash. Maybe, just maybe I’ll try weddings again. Especially now that this “virus stuff” has kinda subsided. My only wish is if I could afford some of the fancy and expensive equipment you have. Not that better equipment would make me better, but give me a better chance of being more creative quickly. You have hero status with me. Waiting for you next video. Rob
Rob this means so much to me that you took the time to tell me all of this. And congrats on such an epic career - all those Emmys!!! Wishing you all the best in this next phase of your image creating ☺️
I'm gonna have to catch this when I wake up at 3am. I always wanted to see real time lens and exposure changes. I'll start with the first 5 minutes and a like
Thanks for sharing! I watched the whole thing. You mentioned to leave comments about what things we'd like to see, so... If you do another video like this, could you do a voiceover to explain what you're thinking as you shoot? For example, something like "Instead of the 28-70mm I'm choosing the 85mm lens for these images because...." or "I chose not to place the couple in this location because..." BTW - All the images were great, but one of my favorite images was the silhouette of the couple. Thanks again for this video!
Hi Vanessa. I’m currently at 1.16:31 of family and bridal party photos, are you using a continuous light on them or flash at all? The photos are coming out beautifully in post but they’re in a darkened area so how are you editing them like so? Thanks.
Hello, just little comment about the changing lens with your assistant (and she is pro cause she protect the lens until you take it from her) what I found the best way to do is that you press the release button and she grabs the lens from the camera while you take the changing lens that way you can go back to your shoot while you lock the new lens. Don't know if that is clear but I found this way is really fast and very secure. :)
See I think that would be less safe because I’m pressing a lens release button and I’m not the one actually holding the lens to confirm, it leaves a gap for communication with me pressing the button and her maybe not being ready to take the lens. 😬
@@VanessaJoy Yes maybe but you know that even if you press the release button the lens do not move or fall and specially in the RF lenses there is a rough pressure when you turn to release (I dont know how to explain that lol) so it's kind of safe in my opinion but all ways are good as long as you feel comfy :) Love your work :) Be safe
Thank you very much for sharing your work... Perhaps I just une a direct light from camera at the first dance of the couple, darker backgroung... Other style...
I finally have an answer for you about my camera strap! creative-teacher-9768.ck.page/1fb5eeedd8 this will be VERY limited so lmk here if you want to know when it's available!
What do I think?? I loved the BTS, wedding day; one of the best video’s I’ve seen. I am just starting my journey and watching all the posing, interaction with the client, set up, decision making and of course the final edits are terrific. Very informative and valuable. I was surprised how many shooters, assistants there were. Thanks for sharing and producing wonderful art.🙌💕
Really finding so many things to see and learn. Had you shot at the ceremony venue before or did you scout it in advance? Did you and your team discuss where they would shoot e.g. were spots assigned or was everyone free to pick their own shooting locations?
Glad you find it helpful. :-) We do not do venue scouting unless we are paid to. I’ve been working with my team for a very long time so we all know how to work around each other very well and know what our roles are. ☺️

Hey Vanessa, Thank you for letting me into the behind the scenes. I especially liked how you set up your lighting in the venue. That is one of my biggest problems, inside lighting. I am a Nikon shooter and only have one off camera flash, is there a way to light with only one flash? Annnnnddddd, the Formals! How quickly you got through them, even with the children and a dog. Truly Amazing. Thank you again for being so open with us!
Thank you Vanessa for sharing this behind the scenes. If one watch carefully there is a lot to learn in this video. Could you please tell us what is the highest ISO you use with your 28-70 f2?
Great job Vanessa (but you already know it 😜🤣). Overall quality aside (which is extremely high, of course) I am particularly amazed by your organisation during the Family photos. That's experience. Great lesson. 👏👏👏
This video was equally educational and inspiring - your work is beautiful Vanessa! The nighttime shots with the city background were outstanding! I am so scared to even try wedding photography but this BTS and watching you work makes me think it is something I could try one day.
Hi Vennessa, i been considering for quite a while buying Canon R5 for wedding photography. My fear is the heavy Megapixel files that might consequently slow down processing work. Could you kindly recommend for a base level IMAC or any computer model that can suit the work from a budget point of view. I would appreciate your reply thanks.
Hi Vanessa, this was so helpful! I’m super interested in how you set up your OCF/how you choose where they go. I saw 2. Do you use a speedlight on top or always just a trigger? I’m amazed!
I like doing two opposite corners - and usually a speedlight on top so I can leave the room and still shoot, plus get fill light if needed. Check out this video for my how to: ruclips.net/video/7SdLhDRJNDE/видео.html
how do you discuss with clients going outside of the traditional timeline of getting ready, ceremony, photos, reception etc? i would love this timeline to spend with them!!!!
This actually is “traditional” for around my area. It does differ per region, culture and religion. I don’t try and talk them into any timeline, I work with what they want for their day ☺️
@@VanessaJoy thank you for replying ! here in the heart of northwest ohio even a first look is still “ new “. i’m definitely going to offer this as an option more seeing how less rushed it is even with a production going on. thank you !
Hie Vanessa i hope i find you well, which Lense.? at what Aperture...? did you use when u were shooting the whole family at 01:11:41 I'm Ryan from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 I'm a beginner photographer it's been a year since i started. I need your advice on this I'm currently using an Entry level DSLR Canon 4000D and 50mm F1.8 and I've saved like a $1000 bucks for my gear upgrade i know it's a very low budget considering the Lenses that I've seen on the start of your video So I'm asking what's the next step, should i buy a camera body worth that money or a Lense. If it is a lense or a body what would u recommend If you find time please reply, have a nice day
@@VanessaJoy Thank you for clarifying the 1st part. Loved watching! Prepping for a wedding this weekend and haven't shot in a while. I was curious how you go about shooting the dancing/reception. Do you simply follow the action or do you try to focus on important people (family, wedding party, etc) and be sure to get them first?
Great video. Any reason the R3 is backup to the R5? I’m thinking of getting the R3 I have the R5 now I’m also a wedding photographer and videographer. Thanks.

I love everything… I have a question (hope doesn’t sounds silly) what AF method do you use for the party? I saw the white frames all over the display, I have never seen that option (or I don’t know which option is) but also I saw you were tracking eyes at the same time… do you use that same AF Method for the first dance ??? TIA.. your friend and fan from Cancun-Mexico.
I’m always in AI servo with eye detection. I may have switched it to an area of focus for the family photo, but if I did it was probably an accident since even for group photos I keep it on eye detection and focus on the couple
Great video. How would you be able to share settings? For instance, the Bride Getting Ready sequence. Seem like only available light is being used there. Is the ISO high in order to get "brighter" shots in focus?

I’m not gonna lie it’s 80% the canon RF 28-70 F2. Hopefully you can catch glimpses of it on the camera throughout
Excellent vid. So glad you posted it. Were there any difficulties getting the people to agree to letting you do that?
Nope ☺️ it’s not obtrusive to them at all, just wearing a go pro. More coming - filmed two more this weekend!
Hi Vanessa. At 1:51 you say you can’t have the lights on TTL. It will get crazy. Why is that? Is it because you have two shooters or another reason?
Yup. Two shooters using the same lights but also sometimes it’s off depending on your metering mode or if I’m photographing the bride in all white and then switch to a guest in all black
Thank you. That makes perfect sense.

love Vanessa's video's - always good tips.
Thanks Kev!
Loved it. Thanks for sharing. Maybe next time you could include camera settings, lens, WB, etc. when you flash the still photos. Thanks again!
Haha happy birthday!
The album was incredible. Just beautiful.
Hi Vanessa, one more question if you don't mind, how do you expose for the subjects using the back screen, do you use a histogram or the camera meter. Many thanks
The back of the screen is a somewhat accurate representation of the final image, but I do see my light meter there as well as check my Instagram and have highlight alert on when I play back the images to make sure I’m not blowing out highlights
great instructional video really loved it great work
Glad u like!
Dear Vanessa,
This video was a Master Class, at least for me.
I'll start with the first 5 minutes and a like
Yay thanks
Thanks for sharing! I watched the whole thing. You mentioned to leave comments about what things we'd like to see, so...
If you do another video like this, could you do a voiceover to explain what you're thinking as you shoot?
For example, something like "Instead of the 28-70mm I'm choosing the 85mm lens for these images because...." or "I chose not to place the couple in this location because..."
BTW - All the images were great, but one of my favorite images was the silhouette of the couple.
Thanks again for this video!
Hi Vanessa. I’m currently at 1.16:31 of family and bridal party photos, are you using a continuous light on them or flash at all? The photos are coming out beautifully in post but they’re in a darkened area so how are you editing them like so? Thanks.
No, there was just even lighting there so when you pump up the shadows it looks pretty good
I can say only Wow and a huge thank you for everything you are sharing with us awesome content ☺️ as always 😉
I’m so happy you appreciate it!
@@VanessaJoy the only thing I am kind of upset is that the region I am living in is not eligible for the live one on one session
Vanessa, thank you so much for sharing it!! I needed it :))
You're so welcome!
Love this Vanessa!!
Thanks 😊
Thank you Vanessa for sharing this’
My pleasure- thanks for watching!
At 17:10, I would’ve tried to use the tv reflection for something creative.
Awesome! Great video! What’s your camera strap?
Kawaprogear But they’re out of business
I finally have an answer for you about my camera strap! creative-teacher-9768.ck.page/1fb5eeedd8 this will be VERY limited so lmk here if you want to know when it's available!
What do I think?? I loved the BTS, wedding day; one of the best video’s I’ve seen. I am just starting my journey and watching all the posing, interaction with the client, set up, decision making and of course the final edits are terrific. Very informative and valuable. I was surprised how many shooters, assistants there were. Thanks for sharing and producing wonderful art.🙌💕
So happy you liked it!
I worked with Jewish wedding and we have 2 sets of team one each for bride and groom 3 each
Really finding so many things to see and learn.

Love you and this channel.
Thanks so much Michael!
Could you please tell us what is the highest ISO you use with your 28-70 f2?
the highest ISO, for me, is based on what camera I'm using, not the lens. With the R5, I'm comfortable with going to 5000 in a dark church
@@VanessaJoy thanks again
Great job Vanessa (but you already know it 😜🤣). Overall quality aside (which is extremely high, of course) I am particularly amazed by your organisation during the Family photos. That's experience. Great lesson. 👏👏👏
Haha I’m obsessive about that!
This video was equally educational and inspiring - your work is beautiful Vanessa! The nighttime shots with the city background were outstanding! I am so scared to even try wedding photography but this BTS and watching you work makes me think it is something I could try one day.
Go for it! So I always say it’s good to shoot with other photographers for us before you try it on your own ☺️
Love it!
Thanks V!
I’m not a total computer person but if you grab any current, new iMac and then add as much memory and the fastest processor you can get you’ll be good
Loved the lighting discussion. I assume you cut sound on the dance to avoid copyright problems.
Were the two off camera flashes pointed straight at the dance floor?
Thanks for taking the time to share your process very helpful!!
Yes ☺️ slightly above
Weddings with more photographers than guests are always fun to navigate through.
What camera do you use to record these behind the scenes footage? Thank you!
Gopro and more recently the canon v10
how do you discuss with clients going outside of the traditional timeline of getting ready, ceremony, photos, reception etc? i would love this timeline to spend with them!!!!
This actually is “traditional” for around my area. It does differ per region, culture and religion. I don’t try and talk them into any timeline, I work with what they want for their day ☺️
@@VanessaJoy thank you for replying ! here in the heart of northwest ohio even a first look is still “ new “. i’m definitely going to offer this as an option more seeing how less rushed it is even with a production going on. thank you !
Hie Vanessa i hope i find you well, which Lense.? at what Aperture...? did you use when u were shooting the whole family at 01:11:41
I'm Ryan from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 I'm a beginner photographer it's been a year since i started. I need your advice on this
I'm currently using an Entry level DSLR Canon 4000D and 50mm F1.8 and I've saved like a $1000 bucks for my gear upgrade i know it's a very low budget considering the Lenses that I've seen on the start of your video
So I'm asking what's the next step, should i buy a camera body worth that money or a Lense. If it is a lense or a body what would u recommend
If you find time please reply, have a nice day
I was using the Canon RF 28-70 F2 and likely around 3.5 for those families until it got to the bigger groups then I’m usually around 7.1 ☺️
@@VanessaJoy Thank you for clarifying the 1st part. You didn't the 2nd part though i need ur help on this 👇

Loved watching! Prepping for a wedding this weekend and haven't shot in a while. I was curious how you go about shooting the dancing/reception. Do you simply follow the action or do you try to focus on important people (family, wedding party, etc) and be sure to get them first?
Both haha
Great video. Any reason the R3 is backup to the R5? I’m thinking of getting the R3 I have the R5 now I’m also a wedding photographer and videographer. Thanks.

Hey Vanessa. Loving it so far. Have you thought of having a monthly content for us? Would definitely pay for it!
I’m planning on launching that in the fall! Are you signed up on my email list? Head to breatheyourpassion.com and sign up if not!
What strap did you use?
Kawaprogear

How long do you set aside for portraits? Seemed like a long time but amazing stuff.
We plan a first look two hours before the ceremony and usually take 90 minutes for first look, bridal party, family and bride and groom photos
@@VanessaJoy awesome, thanks for responding.
