  • After several months of hiccups and delays, I finally put the Yanmar 1GM Diesel engine back together with new piston, rings, bushings (and more) and start it up. Once I get the Cape Dory 25D set up again to receive the engine, I'll re-install it there and move to other projects and sailing.
    Thank you to my friend "D" for the generous use of the shop.

    While you had the water pump out it’s always worth replacing the two seals on the drive shaft. The classic issue is a weep of raw water from the drain hole when the first seal fails. The water drips onto the high pressure oil feed pipe which eventually pinholes and you lose all your oil into the bilge.

    • @VoyageDreams

      Thanks for the tip

    • @stephenrobinson1007
      @stephenrobinson1007 7 месяцев назад

      I ended up replacing the two oil lines under the engine with flexible high pressure lines fabricated by my local hydraulics shop they worked perfectly.
      They water drip is your tell tale that the first seal has failed. Easy to change but drain half the oil first or you’ll find it drains through the hole when you take the pump off.
      Speed seals are indeed a uk product and work really well on the 1gm where the pull my obstructs the cover bolts making it easier to take the pump out to do an impeller change !

    That washer with an internal bonded rubber element is known as a Dowty washer in the UK (after the company that makes them).

    Where did you order your gaskets from? I'm having trouble finding the right head gasket for the Yanmar 1GM. Thanks!

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams  4 месяца назад +1

      There is an authorized Yanmar repair/parts shop near the boat. I ordered direct from them. You should be able to order any parts you need from any authorized Yanmar shop. Mine, Cook Engine in Portland, Oregon, shipped parts to me when needed.

    Hi mate thanks for your video. I’m currently changing the head gasket on my 1gm. I couldn’t help noticing that the head gasket you put on had the waterway holes block off on the gasket??? Is that correct? Thanks Phil 🇬🇧

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi Phil, thanks for watching. I was skeptical of the blocked holes too, but that is by Yanmar's design.

    Thanks for the tutorial Owen,I have a cd 25d 1983 yanmar 1gm. Low compression like yours was, so you think the new piston or valve job made the most improved starting ?

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams  Год назад

      You're welcome, though I'm clearly no authority. In the case of my engine, I tend to think replacing the rings has the greater effect; but if you're going to replace the rings you might as well grind the valves too.

    Did you install the head gasket with the sheet metal up or down?

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for your question. Honestly, I don't recall. The service manual indicates that the OEM head gasket is marked with "Top" on the side that goes against the cylinder head. I likely don't remember what the surface was because I just followed that instruction.

  • @maui6446
    @maui6446 Год назад

    Sounds great! It looked like you used two different sealers on the oil pan. Is that to allow the aluminum pan to move relative to the cast iron block? Is that something Yanmar specifies? I have also never seen the "gasket dressing" used on head gasket?

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams  Год назад

      The service manual indicates the use of "Three Bond 50". Not even the Three Bond Corp knows what that is anymore, I asked. So I used Permetex Ultra Grey on both side of the pan gasket, hoping it will do what it needs.
      The last time I removed the head gasket it was a mess and had to be scraped off. The gasket dressing should allow me to remove the head gasket in one piece if/when I need to remove the head again.

    Hey Owen where did you get your parts from?

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams  6 месяцев назад

      Virtually all parts for this engine were purchased from a local authorized Yanmar shop, Cook Engine in Portland, Oregon. I'd email a list of parts needed (part number + description) and they'd reply with an invoice including shipping (if needed). Very simple to pay by credit card with a quick phone call after that.

      @@VoyageDreams I only asked because I hear the best Diesel is the color Pink, which I thought I seen yours was pink when you bled the fuel lines.

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams  5 месяцев назад

      I had to look into this, but it seems that the pink Diesel is simply fuel that is not intended for road fuel here in the USA. It is not taxed the way road Diesel is taxed and is illegal to use for on-road vehicles. I don't know if it's any better quality, but it likely has a greater amount of sulfur in it. @@lionsdejudah

    • @lionsdejudah
      @lionsdejudah 5 месяцев назад

      @@VoyageDreams o you were using the Dyed Diesel.
      Ok, but I hear Germany has better Diesel fuel than the US and the color is close to pink.
      I’m currently trying to find a better quality diesel.
      Dyed diesel is just regular diesel with like food coloring in it, it’s so when a trucker gets stopped the DOT can tell if he’s breaking the law by filling up with non taxed off road diesel.
