    If both your forward and aft stays are slackening, and all fittings seem OK, it might suggest your mast foot has sunk a bit. possibly consistent with water ingress in that area. I would check the mast step support structure (probably after pretending I hadnt seen it for a while)

    Nice. So 173 in-lbs torque on the injector hold-down bracket. I better get one of those wrenches before I swap out my injector. Also did you have to bleed fuel at the injector after doing it at the high pressure pump?

      Thanks for watching! In my experience with this engine there has been no need to bleed to the injector, only to the high pressure pump. It might take a few more seconds of the starter to get things going, but literally just a few seconds more.

    one my motor it was the rubber grommet that is installed on topp of the waterpump that was leaking water inside the lower unit and not pushing it all the way up thru the engine i solved the problem with a stainless steel zip tie around the rubber grommet slightly narrowing the grommet so it did not leak and it fixed the problem

    Great update as always. We adjust the backstay on our boat while racing, and when let off completely, the rig looks not unlike yours (loose forestay and rear lowers). Yes it does. This is what I used to check the stuffing box

  • @sailingonabudget
    @sailingonabudget 3 месяца назад

    Owen, with modern graphite flax for stuffing boxes you should not drip at all when the shaft is not rotating. None, zero. When you're motoring you should only have 5-6 drops per minute. That's really all it takes. I know it always feels to me like there should more but that is not the case. Don't forget that the tranny is reducing the engine rpm by at least half, some even more. So the shaft is only making a few hundred to maybe 1500 rpms, which is not much. And with graphite flax there is almost no friction at all. Tighten it up to where it doesn't drip at all when stopped. And then while you're tied in the slip put it in reverse and give it some rpm's. Watch it and adjust to a drop every 10 seconds. And then feel the stuffing box. It should not even get warm, and I bet it won't. Give it a try, I bet you'll be surprised. I was ! Lol. And it keeps your bilge much dryer. I have a habit of sponging it dry after a long motor. When I'm sitting, it stays dry, and that is good as it helps keep the boat drier and cuts down on possible mold.

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams 3 месяца назад

      Thank you very much for taking the time to provide this information. I really appreciate your comment. I don't know what type flax is being used; I haven't changed it since I purchased the boat (another thing on the to-do list). But I'll certainly give it a try, maybe allowing for one drip per minute. I have an infrared thermometer I can use to check things too. Thanks again for your input.

    • @sailingonabudget
      @sailingonabudget 3 месяца назад

      @VoyageDreams I should have said even with traditional flax there should be no drip. With the better "Graphtex" brand I have read that some people will do a drip a minute when rotating. I'm not comfortable with that myself, so I do the drop every 10 seconds. The infrared thermometer will tell the whole story for you. I'll be curious to see. Need to get one for myself ! 😉👍

    Just my two cents for what they are are worth ; use a tape measure and a halyard to be sure the masthead is centered on the boat. Then establish tension between the head stay and the back stay. Go sailing in a variety of conditions and collect your experience as this will instruct your how far forward or aft to adjust your masthead. Then you can adjust your lowers accordingly. PM me if you want to talk about it, I would be happy to noodle with you .

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams 3 месяца назад

      Thanks a lot for your comment, Early8Q! I haven't thought of keeping a record of those dimensions, but definitely see the advantage in the event of situations like these loose stays. There has been very little wind when I've been on the boat, but I'll get started on the process. Thanks again!

    • @Early8Q
      @Early8Q 3 месяца назад

      It’s not so much about the measurement as it is about the side to side relationship; you can do it with nothing more than a halyard unless you are trying to repeat a fore/aft setup. When it gets windy shorten your head stay.

  • @jimscheltens2647
    @jimscheltens2647 3 месяца назад

    Could your mast base have compressed? thereby shortening the mast to chainplate distance.

    • @LouisBackover
      @LouisBackover 3 месяца назад

      Came here to say this. Is your boat is deck-stepped? Get down to the bilge and see what's under the compression post or under the mast that's gone bad. You may have to replace a mild steel base plate with new G10 glassed-in. Nasty job.

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams 3 месяца назад

      This is a possibility, but I would expect that scenario would result in most if not all stays becoming loose. In any case, it's certainly worth close scrutiny.

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams 3 месяца назад

      Yes, the boat is deck-stepped with a compression post below decks. I'll certainly investigate further, but would expect all of the stays to be affected if that were the case. It will certainly be a big job, as you mention, but it'll need to be done if that the case. Thanks for your input

    Hi Owen. I just acquired a Cape Dory 25D. I am learning about the joys of seacocks. I have a question: In the cockpit compartment, on the port side, what is that seacock used for? The former owner thought it is for pumping out the holding tank. However, when I showed a photo on the Cape Dory Fans Facebook page, everybody swore it is for the cockpit drain Do you know which it is? And if it's not for the cockpit drain, there where is the seacock for the cockpit drain? I realize you video is a few years old, so I hope you're still around. Thanks.

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams 4 месяца назад

      Hi! Good question. The seacock located in the port cockpit locker is for the head's holding tank. The two cockpit drain seacocks are located on each side of the engine. I hope this helps.

    • @egilchri
      @egilchri 4 месяца назад

      @@VoyageDreams That helps a lot. For me, this port cockpit locker seacock is frozen in the closed position. I live in New England, and I have been told that I should leave seacocks open. But what I have done so far with this one, is I have taken off the hose and led it into a bucket, down in that locker. Do you think I need to stress about freeing up that seacock, and leaving it in open position? I don't plan on wanting to pump out my holding tank, because I plan on having a marina pump it out directly. Because I kind of want to triage my jobs, as winter approaches. For instance, the intake seacock for the head is frozen, so maybe my energy is better spent freeing up that one.

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams 3 месяца назад

      @@egilchri I don't believe there's any concern about leaving the head holding tank seacock closed. In my opinion, the two seacocks that you want to ensure remain open, but functional, are for the cockpit drains. All seacocks should work properly as they are important safety devices, but it seems to me that focusing on the head inlet is a good place to start. Sooner rather than later, however, you'll want to ensure all seacocks function properly.

    Owen, so very nice to see the completion of the engine project, you did a great job. I have three tips I would like to pass on from my experence. Take it with a grain of salt cause you heard it on the internet. Packing gland- I also have a traditional gland that dripped excessively even when the engine was off. I was able to adjust it (after a repack) until it only drips a couple of times a minute when the engine is running. I inspect it frequently for drip rate and heat build-up but I haven't had to adjust it now well over 100 hours. Fuel lift pump- my system came with a similar pump hard wired to the ignition switch. I highly recommend doing this as you will never have to use the manual pump again. To bleed with this setup, I just turn my key to on (not started) and crack open the first bleed point downstream of the pump and work my way out toward the injector. There will be slight pressure increase so check the copper washers on the bleed points and hose fittings, technically they are a one time use and seep a bit after multiple cycles. New regulator- I also had to change mine and yes, my first effort ended up with F and R swapped. I did learn after referring to the engine manual that the adjustment of when they are in F and R is critical. Apparently with my model the transmission will engage but slip slightly if the adjustment is not correct. I found that the easiest way to verify the shift arm is in the correct position was to disconnect the cable from the arm, mark the position on the transmission case for each position F-N-R. Then reattach the cable and make sure the regulator cable is not holding the arm slightly off of those marked positions as I put it in each position I have no reason to believe yours is wrong but passing it on as a precaution. Enjoyed the video as alway, Dan of S/V Drifter

    • @VoyageDreams
      @VoyageDreams 4 месяца назад

      Hi Dan, thanks a lot for your helpful comment. I'm sure the drips at the packing gland can be slowed as I had it shut off completely just a couple months ago. And while new packing is on the to-do list, in the interim I haven't yet taken the few moments adjust the packing to slow the drip. I love the idea of an inline fuel pump, but don't want it running all the time. I'm formulating ideas on how to add one that uses a normally-open, push-button switch to bleed the system quickly, as you describe. Your comment about the new regulator and the gearbox is very interesting. I'll definitely be looking into this during my next visit. It's certainly worth the precaution. Thanks again for your input. All the best to you.

    This is the most honest review on this motor I've seen. I have recently purchased a similar model and I intend to give it a full overhaul, I think they are great outboards. Thanks for posting. Best wishes from Northern Ireland 👍

    Hey Owen I enjoy watching your videos as I too am wanting a Cape Dory or an Alberg 30 for a restoration project. I have to ask what is the headroom in the cabin? I am 6’1” and don’t want to stoop down to walk around inside. I am in central Washington aways from sailable water. If you have a line on a project boat, I’d take a look. Do you currently still have the 3 boats?

      I think parts of the interior of the CD25D might be very close to 6'1", but likely not quite and only a small part of the cabin provides that height. I haven't been looking at other boats, but I'm sure there are plenty out there. Enjoy the search! I only have the Cape Dory. I sold both the Alberg and Tanzer boats years ago.

    Owen, Scanmar Marine has the Cape Dory 25 on their list of boats they've had Monitors installed on. They could probably make up the mounting tubes for it.

      Thank you! Continued parts availability is one reason I decided the Monitor would be a good option.

    Owen, you can get a welder to spot weld those corrosion points with stainless stick/tig/mig. Then grind smooth, and you'll never even know they are there. Nice score. Good too see again.
