YO THIS IS SO ACCURATE. My dad would always ask, “Why are you watching a show about volleyball when you could just watch volleyball?” Dad....................... YOU JUST DONT GET IT OKAY
The inner monologues and the essentially freezing of time to explain in detail what is going through not only an individual player's mind, but their whole team or their opponent's mind as well really makes you feel the impact of what's going on. No matter what sport we watch in real life, we will never get a frozen play where the players stop as the ball is midair and tell us exactly what it is they are thinking and why they are thinking it.
Damn! That's a great way to exercise without having to expend mental force. I have to convince myself to exercise WHILE exercising, because I'm bored out of my mind.
Tim Lyu sorry, I didn’t see your comment. I honestly just watch any anime. I finished „Rising of the shield hero“ and „Little Witch Academia“ and many others while I was at the gym 😊
If you haven't seen Hajime no Ippo, please check it out! It's honestly the most inspirational anime I've ever seen and it's what got me motivated to be more active. My buddy and I got into the sport because of this show. It's fantastic 10/10
the main reason why lot's of sports anime are so fucking bad and we only can talk about a bunch that are actually really good is the main reason of this video. The main target of sports anime is people who doesn't like real sports. I think that if some anime sports were more realistic (no exaggeration of friendship, real goals not only a school tournament and characters with real problems not only sports problems) this kind of anime wil be really good. Just think about Hajime no ippo, slam dunk or ping pong the animation, they were more realistic and that's why they are so good, because they really know how to do and recreate
Before Ace of Diamond I didn’t even know how baseball was played and wasn’t even interested in baseball but after watching 3 seasons I fully understand baseball and baseball is now my favorite sport to watch
To be more specific I'll say that some of my favorite sports anime are "Keijo!", "Harukana Recieve", "How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift?", and "Kandagawa Jet Girls."
I actually loved watching sports before I got into anime (huge hockey fan also like watching rugby, volleyball, soccer, basketball, figure skating) I even played volleyball all throughout elementary/middle school. Sports anime definitely hit differently, especially run with the wind i never cared for track sports but that anime got me all types of emotional. I really wish there were more winter sports animes, i would kill for a hockey or snowboarding anime.
Hajime no Ippo is my favorite because every time I see it gets me pumped, then when I see a normal boxing match I have high expectations then it's just boring.
Prince of Tennis had plenty of cool special moves/shots. And some gimmicky tennis rackets as well. I faintly remember seeing a player using an old fashioned wood framed racket with an insanely long neck for returning shots that are too far for them to run to.
I haven't watched the video yet as I don't have time before work, but for me sports anime just make the most simplest of sports so exciting! An example of this is "Scorching Ping Pong Girls". How exciting can ping pong get? I was so fucking hyped every week to watch that show and I'd actually wanna own it if it gets a NA release. The drama is another factor, while there is drama in real sports its not a "story" therefore anime is able to create this tension and rivalry that goes beyond real life. There is ALWAYS a protagonist/antagonist even in the slightest degree that just adds to watching that match. Case and point. Free. Swimming of all things is made to be such a big deal and I never really thought much about competitive swimming even though its a "race" in water.
To toss in regarding your comment about the NHL's 2012 LA Kings, I'd consider an anime about the 2019 St. Louis Blues run to their first championship since their 1952 inaugural season. I believe Giant Killing was along this similar story line.
I think sports anime is a really fun way of getting into traditional sports tbh. Never cared for volleyball in the least until I watched haikyuu, now I think it’s super interesting. It breaks down the way the sport is played in a super easily digestible way, while also being very over the top and entertaining so it’s not just watching a regular volleyball game, but animated
Yea this is tru.... I ain't gonna lie once I read/watched Haikyuu, every time I see a irl volleyball game im just yellin out "NAISU NAISU!" when they do a sick serve.
Leicester winning the 2015-16 premier league is the biggest underdog story ever anime included. The chances given to them at the start of the season to win the league were 1/5000 and had them as favorites to get relegated, and their striker Jamie Vardy is probably the closest thing you can get to an anime main character in real life, from playing non professional all the way to becoming premier league champion and playing at a world cup
I love Run with the Wind you should totally finish it Tim it's such a great story with some of the most interesting characters in sports anime I've seen in a long time
I think the true reason is because you get to relate and understand the characters for who they really are. It’s about the struggle to win and the people around them. But in most sports you don’t get a true insight on the players personal lives unless they’re the star. Just my thoughts
Kono Oto Tomare is a freaking anime which is more musical but can be considered as sport anime. I love it so much Such as Chiayafuru and March comes like a lion ❤️
I love sports (baseball, basketball, football, soccer, mma, boxing and wrestling) sports anime: run with the wind, ahiru no sora, kuroko no basket, megalo box, ace of diamond, eyeshield 21, Days (21), haikyuu, Baki, Rise Up Animal Road, Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru, Captain Tsubasa, hajime no ippo, giant killing, knight in the area and Hanebado!
I think I found my long lost brother. I feel the same way about all the sports. I also feel like that Eyeshield 21 needs to be remastered and finished off like the manga. Same thing going for Knight in the Area, Slam Dunk & Baby Steps, Hajime No Ippo & History Mightest Disciple Kenichi.
Tim Lyu that’s ok b/c this was still great! But many sports anime are also popular because of ships, Yuri on Ice’s Yuri/Victor is a HUGE example. People adore watching that relationship develop on screen as Yuri as develops as a confident skater. Haikyuu on the other hand has tons of ships that people enjoy for various reasons. Also, Free! has characters that are also really easy to ship with multiple people. You can always do a video on shipping culture another time.
I feel the same way I hate real sports but I love sports anime because it's funny to the characters some sad backstory of the characters and some thrilling exhilarating sports moments that me and everybody would stand up and cheer for their team player's in the tournament challenge but in reality to be honest it's boring some people are mean and nobody wants to be friends with or pretend you have a friend and none of them aren't funny in person.
I learned the rules/terms of tennis, american football, figure skating and basketball from watching/reading anime/manga. After I watch Eyeshield 21 in particular I could understand the game better when I joined my family watching the Saints.
Tbh I really like watching soccer I can always feel the tension between the major players, but its really good in anime form too because the tension grows, the inner monologs, and ya know its anime and shounen
I used to hate sports when I was a kid, then I read Eyeshield 21 and Whistle! Now I'm a huge football and soccer fan, and nearly everything I know about the sports (from the rules to in-depth analysis of strategy) came from that.
I appreciate the sorta-use of sports FLCL, in that the older brother was present in everyone's thoughts (including the viewer) but absent bc he bounced to the USA to play baseball. Somehow, being absent for baseball, from a story that is so far from sports, makes his distance all the more... distant. And Haruko using her guitar like a bat is a continual nod to this too.
Dumb question, but... Is there a Soccer (Football) or Judo anime? Those are my favorite sports. ALSO, that boxing anime reminds me of Punch-Out!! Need to check it out. Thanks again anime Community!

Eventually I did because the hype surrounding it was too good and enough time has passed that its more just nostalgia than anything.
I used to play basketball and still collect basketball cards but never really got into watching games on TV (even though I did recently start watching B.League) but basketball anime and manga always has been more interesting and also I just started taking martial arts classes.
