Cory in the house is an Isekai Anime where a protagonist named Cory gets transported to another world known as The White House.
Lion Boss Ah yes... Cory In Za House... my favorite...
Ya know... This is the best argument for that
It’s a pinnacle show for the mkdeen génération of anime and isekai fans alike
Starting to grow tired of that meme
@@Goldfire345 Same. It never made sense to me
Don't forget Truck-kun
Because Truck-kun certainly won't forgot you when you're crossing the street!
Lmao im the 2nd comment
I’m so happy you talked about Fushigi Yuugi and Inuyasha. My friends only like recent anime because of the art style and refuse to watch earlier anime because they hate the old style.
They have no idea what they are missing...
Those are both my favourites
i'm mix between the two i can watch series from the 90s-2000 like inuyasha or yu yu hakusho but the ones from like the 80s are just too dated for me to go back to.
Whaaat? But new anime styles look so...moe-blobby D: What a shame
NiaNook I agree. I don’t mind the new style but it’s sad that others don’t even want to see popular anime and get confused at Cons and Matsuri festivals. I always get so excited when I see cosplayers and merchandise but they just look at me and ask what’s wrong?
Inuyasha is one big reason why i love anime. That and DBZ, and cowboy.
@Jose C If it is or if it isn't its still one of my favorites.
Jose C it’s like when people say Dr. stone is an anime. When it’s just set in the far far future.
I watched that show when I was a kid
Samee ❤️
@Jose C you should get a life I was saying it was one of my favorite ...
So why doesn't Crunchy Roll have the Isekai genre as a filter?
It's a subgenre of fantasy
Because Crunchyroll is trash
because 9/10 your probably watching an isekai, doesnt really help narrow down searches and you should be interested based on other themes besides isekai.
van hu Because Isekai is not a genre. It’s a setting.
Many Prejudices about Anime and Manga Fans are True - this Community has Big Issues. Big Issues i say. Before i start a way too long comment, i just end it here. Hope you still give it a thought. Dont just ignore all Problems...
My favorite isekai is Inuyasha it was my childhood and it was also the very 1st anime I watched

@Jose C it's close enough.

Sit boy!
InuYasha is so nostalgic to me, so I find myself particularly fond of it. In general though, I prefer Reverse Isekai a tad bit more, like The Devil is A Part-Timer! I like the idea of a little magic entering the mundane world that one has to find for themselves.
Great explanation! ^.^
Also zero familiar
Totally agree, the devil is a part timer is excellent but i generally don't class reverse Isekai as Isekai.
When inuyasha comes to present say lol

There's actually an English language term for this: portal fantasy. So if you're looking for non-Japanese stories with other world elements, you might want to add that to your search terms.
The 80's Dungeons and Dragons cartoon was pure isekai.
captain n is better
Inuyasha introduced me to anime.
Now ill never go back.

legit my school has an English writing contest every year and this year its portals to another world (isekai)
Truck-kun says hello.
I wonder how many troop on both side in D-Day got isekai by tank-kun
I'm kinda sad that not a single person mentioned Zero no Tsukaima ( The Familiar of Zero ).
Dark Star
Tell me about it and I might watch it.
Probably because it’s a shit anime where the female love interest treats the guy worse than a stray dog. And that’s not an expression, if did half the things to an animal that she did to him you could be charged with animal cruelty in most states.
Yet this is clearly the character they wanted us rooting for.
@@kyriss12 Well people kept shipping Rukia with Ichigo. That was an abusive relationship if I ever saw one. Saito was a masochist, so it's no wonder he chooses Louise.
Even though it's an isekai in story elements, it's from a very different cultural landscape.
Fits more in the mid 00s (contemporary) fantasy style, with the same themes, story progression and basically the same characters that J.C.Staff was pushing with other shows, like Shana, Index, etc.
It IS an Isekai tho, just not useful for the time-line presented in this video.
There were a lot of weird outliers like that. Anime that just so happened to be isekai which sort of appeared out of nowhere, despite the current isekai trends.
Like Now and Then, Here and There in 99 or Spirited Away in 01.
@@masteranimation2008 How were they abusive?!
Literally had this conversation with my husband last night, lol. He didn't know the title for into another world series, but loves the genre. InuYasha got me into anime in middle school and will always be one of my top favorites in manga form as well. Overlord is another favorite that I am currently obsessed with and can't wait for more of the anime and manga, reading the light novels.
Digimon, InuYasha, and the Dot Hack franchise were my first dips into Isekai! Love these series to this day!
i love you for talking about Fushigi Yuugi and Inuyasha
Gotta talk about the classics
I love that you mentioned Fushigi Yugi. It doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves.
Sometimes I wonder if truck-kun is omnipresent and looking down on all of us
Bless Truck-Kun.
My Top 3 Isekai:
1. Re: Zero
2. Overlord
3. Konosuba
I'm going to cheat slightly by including a non-anime (because it's just that good):
1. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (most definitely not suitable for kids, but does include an early example of Truck-kun in the form of a police car).
2. Youjo Senki (so far, I've only got the first 5 volumes of the LN, but they're all excellent, and the anime adaptation is great too; the Japanese VA's nail it).
3. Sword Art Online Abridged (just go watch it, it's absurd how much better it is than it's source material).
I don't know what it is about Re: Zero, I should love it, but for some reason I keep bouncing off the show after a few episodes. Overlord I've kinda ruined for myself, the more recent LN entries have been... lesser than the earlier ones, so the anime will have a lot of work to do to maintain the quality of story telling if we get anymore seasons. And Konosuba... Oh blessed Konosuba. So I have a problem with foreign language comedies, it's no fault of the shows themselves, but I really struggle with them (I think it could be due to the timing being thrown off when I'm having to read subs, I'm sure I'd have a great time if I actually understood more than a few words of Japanese); I did have an absolute blast with season 1 when I got to watch it dubbed though. But why the hell have they dubbed season 2 in what seems like every language *except* English.
I prefer konosuba over re zero
My favourite Isekai has gotta be No Game No Life.
Which reminds me- GIVE US SEASON 2 YA HACK
Inuyasha, Aura Battle Dunbine, and Sword Art Online; lastly Lain Serial Experiments
if you like SAO, you should really give the .hack// series a chance. The video game trilogy was just HD released on steam and ps4.
Thank you for including all the shoujo-isekai origins. Occasionally, there's a new shoujo/josei isekai show (Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits last year), but pretty rarely nowadays, and especially rarely in the romance/action genre like with Escaflowne or Fushigi Yuugi.
Gladly!! They're so important to the history so it was fun getting to talk about them
I loved Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits. I waited every week for new episodes. The art was tacky at first but got better and the music was amazing. I hope it has a second season.
@@claramartinez6365 Thankfully, the source material was at least licensed, so you can always check that out!

I love konosuba i was watching it yesterday
My favorite alongside Re:zero
WOW. And here I thought there wasn’t an isekai starring girls. I’d forgotten about Fushigi Yugi, Inuyasha, and Vision of Escaflowne.
The modern isekai with female protagonists need more recognition/popularity. I'm really glad for Ascendance Of A Book Worm last season. Also I found "So I'm A Spider, So What?!" They're both awesome (but for different reasons)
Don't forget twelve kingdoms
Don't forget Major Tanya von Degurechaff
.hack//SIGN technically stars girls too c:
My next life as a villainess?
My favorite 異世界 (isekai) series is the Sword Art Online series and it’s many sequels, OVAs, and movies.
My other favorites include:
- No Game No Life
- That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
- Over Lord
- How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord
have you seen the movie for no game no life? That shit hit the feels for me
Alright boys 7:34 is what we’re all here for “InuYasha”
Oh my I watch all these shows. That explains a lot. Lol
The 90s was kind to anime. My childhood!!!! Thank you Toonami and now Crunchyroll.
And video games.
Only came for Inuyasha
That's how it always starts
Same

Never knew what genre it was called, but I love those stories where characters are transported to another world. Inuyasha is my all time favorite; could Bleach be considered the same? Your channel is awesome...you earned another subscriber 😁
Escaflowne and Five Star Stories have some of my favorite mecha design.
I remember InuYasha premiring on Adult Swim in 2002. That was the show that got me hooked into Anime. It wasn't perfect, but it was addictive to see how the story would continue.
People forget stuff like Gulliver's travel as a classic one to the genre. But at the same time, it is arguable.
Thankyou. Now everyone can stop hating on the word Isekai and actually appreciate the good ones.
First isekai - alice in wonderland
First anime isekai - inuyasha
Favorite isekai - matrix?
I don't think matrix is an isekai, neo didn't transported into other world but to reality
@Jose C, I think Inuyasha is isekai (another world) because Kagome is traveling between her modern normal world that she (and us the audience) is completely familiar with and a completely alien world where magic and demons are real and not just a myth like in our world. Take for example "Lord of The Rings" (LoTR), it is considered an epic fantasy story because all of the characters are from that world (middle earth), but if you were to be suddenly dropped into that world and became a protagonist/antagonist then LoTR would no longer be classified as just an epic fantasy but would become an isekai epic fantasy story. You do bring up a valid point about time travel, I think it has to be handled on a case by case basis on whether or not the story is Isekai or not. I wouldn't consider "Back to the Future" to be an isekai story, because Marty (though a fish out of water) is not completely unfamiliar with the place. But I would call "The Time Machine" where the protagonist goes into a completely unfamiliar future an isekai story. Nor do I consider familiarity/ unfamiliarity to be a necessary determiner of what is or isn't isekai for example the characters in "Log Horizon" are familiar with the game world but I still consider it an isekai story.
The whole .hack franchise and Serial Experiments Lain will always hold a dear place in my heart since video games were such a huge part of my childhood. And while most people will not recognize this series, let alone recognize it as Isekai, Haibane Renmei will always be one of my favorite anime series of all time.
Is Digimon Isekai ?
I'd count it!
Yesss!!! I came just to give Digimon some recognition!!
Yep
I hope Crunchyroll will be adding the inspirational anime movies from Studio Ghibli, including Spirited Away.
I really do.
@Yuki BabaYaga the anime movies from Studio Ghibli are no longer with Disney, I'm afraid.
They are now officially owned by GKIDS.
I just started watching Re: Zero and it I like how it breaks some of the biggest "summoned hero" tropes, among other things. However...for pure entertainment value, I prefer lighthearted shows like How Not To Summon a Demon Lord, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime or Kemono Michi: Rise Up. Re: Zero started out lighthearted like that but then went really dark.
shield hero is definitely my fav isekai ever and nothing can change that
Some of my favorites isekai:
*Re:Zero*
*Konosuba*
*The rising of the shield hero*
Facts
mushoku tensei
Interesting that you didn't mention the Dungeons & Dragons TV series from the mid 80s featuring Toei Animation. It definitely fits the subject.
My favorite Isekai is Inuyasha. Rumiko Takahashi is one of the best mangaka out there. She created many great manga such as Ranma 1/2. Inuyasha is one of her best stories.
My favorite Isekai hands-down is The Twelve Kingdoms it's crazy to me that this show is so overlooked. It had a 45 episode anime and dub and many LN's. Anyway, I generally like most Isekai.
Kermit smoking a blunt with two katanas LMAO
Pretty sure The Twelve Kingdoms had a big impact on the girl Isekai section and should have gotten a mention.
Considering the books started in 1992 and were really popular.
The anime came in much later, in 2002, when the next age of digital Isekai had already started but still contemporary to Inuyasha. Like an Anti-Inuyasha if you will.
SOMEONE FINALLY MENTIONED EL HAZARD! I LOVE YOU!
for real though, that show is way too forgotten.... it was awesome, and did not get the love it deserved... and still doesn't.
Inuyasha is my favorite and it was my first anime that ever got into.
First isekai anime: Inuyasha
First Isekai title: The Chronicles of Narnia
Favorite at the moment: Log Horizon
If you like Log Horizon, you'd probably like the .hack series. Like he said in the video, it's typically credited for being the first "stuck in an MMO" type anime.
One english term for Isekai is "Portal Fantasy".
Also, kept cringing at mispronouncing El-Hazard. :)
Not the only thing he mispronounced
I.e inuyasha
Now that I think about it, Digimon really fits.
If a game like Shin Megami Tensei III - Nocturne fits, then that's my favorite.
Fushiyugi, the original run of escaflowne, El hazard, (which I own all three series)and now SAO
Magic knight rayearth and digimon are great! I still plan to watch Rayearth's second season. Konosuba is pretty fun and I've been super enjoying shield hero. I was looking at the mal summer anime chart and feeling like a fraction of the shows were isekai. Kind of wondered when the floodgates opened up but I guess they've always been around.
Well now that you mention it... I was watchin NG Knight Lamune & 40 on Crunchyroll (thanks for bringing back these classic shows BTW) when I realized that it technically was an Isekai story. Protagonist gets scouted to be a Hero in another world by getting a high score in a video game. Mind blown for a minute there.
Isekai is awesome Imo. Btw saber called and she wants Excalibur back lol 😊💙
Awesome informative video, I actually sat through the whole thing without FF any, very good examples and good to know the root of Isekai - one of the most popular anime genre at the moment.
Thank you! I'm so happy to hear!!
Favorite Isekai anime: Saga of Tanya the Evil
Digimon was my introduction to Isekai, and I couldn't be happier with that!
Surprised to find out the love fantasy started with shojo, and the modern harem is only a slightly new twist on an old trope from a genre whose main demographic was girls.
Thanks, for quite some time I've been trying to remember the name of that magical girl show that had someting to do with computers and fighting virus, it was Corrector Yui. I watched that in the early 2000's so the memory was kinda fuzzy, but as soon as I saw the character something clicked inside my mind so I went to MAL to read the description and yep, it was that one. Although I'm pretty sure I watched almost the whole thing back then so I suppose the spanish dub actually got completed unlike the english one.
Not planning to rewatch it anytime soon but it's nice to know it actually existed and it wasn't just my brain smashing together fragments from other series.
Well, my favourite isekai has got to be Inuyasha. I didn’t know this was a genre, though. I love the idea of two worlds crossing, so this genre is wonderful for me!
Escaflown was relative action driven for a shoujo anime, i would say it was a hybrid. It even was marketed as action driven
Overlord, Saga of Tanya the Evil, Overly Cautious Hero, Konosuba, Devil is a Part-timer, Spirited Away, Arifureta, No Game No Life, Inuyasha, Mushoku Tensei, the John Carter of Mars series, Peter Pan- all great in different ways.
Why is every crunchyroll videos are blocked in india. We watch anime in india bruh
Thanks for introducing me to El Hazard ... an isekai anime classic from before my time ... 💗
Also, Mahou Shoujo Tai Arusu, an isekai I've never even heard of, despite it being from 2004 ... 🧙♀️
SAO was the first anime I watched and it was very enjoyable
SAO, makes me wish they didn't use time skips, focused on a group trying to clear 100 floors of a dungeon, rather than any harem plots ... that said, SAO alternative was good.
Drifters was some underrated, love how he mentions it.
Pause and Select made a great video criticizing this video’s definition and examples of isekai
Dungeons and Dragons the Animates Series was a great version of Isekai. Kids went on amusement park ride, and ended up having to babysit a unicorn bebbe and run away from Venger after being given special weapons. But really it is in the Rig Veda that we find the first written account of Isekai. The Tale of the Boy with the Moon on his Forehead is the oldest story of a Birthmark denoting destiny, harem style rewards (he is also the boy that seven mothers tried to suckle), and he is the first person from a foreign land chosen to go to a remote land or world, face a great evil, and rescue a princess. He is even insulted by a young woman who accompanies him that is jealous of the women who get his affection. Anime is based on the oldest religious tales in human history.
It's The rising of the shield hero my isekai Favourite :333
1.Overlord THE BEST ONE EVER AND NEEDS TO CONTINUE SEASON 4 AND 5
2. That time I got reincarnated as a slime

6. Sword Art Online
7. Demon lord retry
8. rising of a shield hero
9. Wise mans grandchild

Needed more Escaflowne. Shoji Kawamori's mecha design, Yoko Kanno's music, and a story blending giant robots, feudal countries, and western philosophy is just simply the best.

Jose C Lol ok so you should post that comment on the main page so the uploader sees it
Jose C No worries, man.
Technicly speaking the first Japanese animated series that revolves around the idea of people getting transported too a fantasy world was the 1983 Dungeons and Dragons cartoon.
Now and Then, Here and There is an awesome isekai anime

Monster Rancher overlooked yet again.
Oh my gosh, I found myself loving all the shows with this concept, but had no idea it was an actual genre.
You should check out Restaurant to another world, in that anime a restaurant in Japan is closed on Saturdays because once every seven days it's doors open to another world were various magical creatures and adventurers would come and eat. Nearly every episode someone from that fantasy would would come across a weird door sometimes in the middle of nowhere they enter find the restaurant and stay for a bite, and return every 7 days for more amazing food.
SAO is my favorite isekai, though Outbreak Company and some others are a close second.
My is Konosuba and Re:zero

@@user-hx7io9lh8t Yeah... People that hate SAO are people that don't give it much of a chance. Sure it shares aspects with the .hack series but it's different.
Dude make your own channel. You're killing it.
Bleach is an Isekai, change my mind. That's probably why I became addicted to it.
Miguel Peña yea i was thinking it was
The directino and ending of that anime made me want to Isekai myself.
I wouldn't put Bleach in the same category as Isekai. While Ichigo dose go to another world, it's more like taking the occasional flight to a different country than moving to an entirely new way of life. Also the spirit world is pretty much just parallel with the living world and constantly influences it.
With that said, I think it was a crying shame that the author got burnt out and ended the series prematurely.
yeh its actually an isekai but for status reasons, its an emberrasment, for calling bleach an isekai
Inuyasha technically aired on the Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network during late Saturday nights in the 2000's when they just aired anime geared toward a more mature audience, not on Toonami. Although I'm not sure if was ever aired on the Toonami revival that started around 2012.

Chelsea Yearwood INUYASHAAAAAAAAA (kagome voice)
I agree with some commenters that the first otherworldly (isekai) adventure is “Alice in Wonderland” (1865 England) but I’d classify this as the first Shojo isekai and, “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthutr’s Court” (1889 USA) as the first Shonen one. Obviously they weren’t the last ones to be found in literature and it would be interesting to find if the early anime creators were aware of these stories. I do find it funny that isekai submissions are not being accepted by Kadokawa. If only YA publishers would do the same with vampire and werewolf love interest stories. So now I know what happened to Corrector Yui, thanks.
How to not summon a demon lord , that’s why I came
That Super Mario 64 reference at the end was a nice touch.
