They never went to the nice building... The trans am is in one of the buildings that is in this video. I can't believe anyone would turn down seeing his nice stuff. This video pretty much only shows his 3rd and 4th string vehicles.
I owned a 78 datsun 510 2 door back in 1986, bought for $100.00 4spd. I slid on some ice one winter, and spun around sliding going backwards about 40-50 miles per hour, and hit a telephone pole on the driver's side so hard, it pushed the whole trunk over to the passenger side!! I had my kid brother run across the back yard full speed hitting the pass side with whole body blocks, until he straightened the trunk back out, then I put in taillights from a dodge mirada I believe it was called, and it was good to go back on the road!!! Loved that car!! Thanks for sharing!!!
My grandma has said a 510 was her favorite car she ever had, and she used to get a new BMW every year back when our family owned a dealership in the 70's-80's so I think that's saying a lot for the little Datsun. Always thought they looked like a lot of fun.
I used to bomb around Portland Oregon in the late 80's and early 90's in a bunch of 510's. Fun cars. I finally gave in and sold them all and bought a 92 hardbody. But my faded red 68 4 door was an absolute blast to to drive. 2 liter, dual webers, hot cam, Z buckets, short shaft 5 speed with an odd shift pattern, a z rear end, gold Enkei's and Nitto 205/60/HR13. Looked like a pile with nice wheels.....it sort of was. It was an import with fender mounted mirrors. I flogged that car daily.
Its a great car today. I have one and it can out handle nearly every new car and can out stop any production car. It has original brakes and stops from 60mph in 70 feet. Its more reliable than a new Toyota yet you can actually work on it. I can go on and on
We've missed Barnfinder for way too long! Glad Tom's back, thanks Hagerty. Ps. Am I the only one who things Richard here reminds me of Grandpa from 'The Munsters'???
So nice to see you back posting, Tom. The first and only time I saw a 510 race was in Canada, in 1972. My friend's cousin raced one and he invited us to the pits to watch. Once again you have brought wonderful memories back. Thanks Tom.
Not a dying breed. More young people, myself included, are discovering what awesome and easy to work on cars that Datsuns are. I've been driving/ restoring my 240z for 10 years and every time I get behind the wheel brings a mass of smiles every time. I got the bug bad. It's just a shame rust scares alot of diyers away from picking one up
in Australia we refer to them as Datsun 1600 and they are mostly 4 doors .. have owned 5 of them over the years and absolutely love them. L16, 2x L18, L20 and a CA18DET. wish Id kept the granny spec datto with L20 with twin webers. importing a 2 door is a long held dream of mine. cracking video Tom 🙌
To say those early Datsuns were prone to rust was an understatement. When I first got my licence in 1972 and living in the midwest where they used copious amounts of salt on the roads I remember seeing a B210 rusting thru after just one year and many were in the scrapyard after just 5 years because they were unsafe to drive from all the rust.
Unfortunately this was a problem for lots of Japanese-made cars in those days. The reason is because in Japan they used very poor quality steel. Much of their steel is recycled, and in the past they didn't process it very effectively, so there was already lots of rust in the metal to begin with. They didn't really need high quality steel for their own domestic market, because they don't have nearly as harsh of weather, cars don't get driven nearly as much, and people don't own cars in Japan for very long due to strict inspections that take unsafe cars off the road. Eventually by the mid-80s, Japanese car manufacturers finally started building their car bodies and frames with better quality steel.
Wow, haven't seen that many 510s in ages. There were millions of them and they have almost completely disappeared. I had an orange 73' 2 door with Shelby Cal 500 mags(wanted A R Libre mags...), fibreglass fenders, a Formula France steering wheel, and the obligatory rusty trunk floor, in about 1978. Great car, like a poor man's 2002, but I liked the look of the Datsun better. Thanks for stirring the memories Tom!
Back in the day I had a B210 that I purchased for $40. I drove it for about a year and the engine threw a rod but because there were so many of them in wrecking yards back then finding a good used engine was cheap and they were easy to remove and install. I put in at least 5 wrecking yard engines before that poor car rusted away but I had a lot of fun with it and have always wanted to find another one that is in good condition.
Very much enjoyed this one. Back when I was a young man , I worked in the race shop for Bob Sharp in Wilton Ct. Only job I ever had where You could go fishing at lunch time.
he guys sitting on classic Datsuns helping the prices go through the roof. End result it becomes too expensive for enthusiasts to look after and restore these cars
Yeah, they squirrelled away all these cheap things so we couldn’t have them. All the cars are unobtainium too. There’s nothing to see on the road, nothing to buy. They KILLED culture. It’s called city culture mining ⛏. They have these bizarre concepts of having a car when it’s not actually useable. They stopped being cars decades ago. These are buckets of rust, not cars. This is toms delusional era videos.
My first car ( truck ) was a 73 Datsun 620 I got out of a old mans back yard. It had been sitting for several years. Some fresh gas and a battery it fired right up. I fixed it up and drove it for several years. Loved Datsuns ever since.
We have a collector in South Africa who has a private collection of over 200 Datsun/Nissans, I think starting at a 1939 Datsun. An incredible collection of cars all in good running showroom condition. It is believed to be the largest private collection of a single car brand.
Sweet episode!! I've always wanted to try driving a sorted 510, but the 2000 Fairlady roadster is one of my dream cars. No mention of the mini truck at the end of the tour!
One of my favorite cars of all time, had brand new '72 lime green 510 four door. As soon as the Toyo's wore out I put Michelins on and it made all the difference in the handling. Eventually added an Ansa exhaust which had a great sound.
Over the year I have owned 4 510 sedans. My last one had a Rajay tubo kit on it. It made 20 psi of boost and would eat most cars for lunch. My dad had a 68 1/2 Solex Roadster and later he had a 72 240Z He changed the needles in the Sus to neddles from a 200 roadster. It ran strong after that.
You’re definitely right about old cars sitting in small towns. I live in Western Iowa, and use to take road trips on the back highways. I was always seeing old cars.
Paint scheme was generic Nissan. The number of shorty Z cars is unusual. Here in Oz we got 240s, all manual and short, 260s both long and occasionally short and then 280s, all long and fat. The shortys are the ones everyone wants. I have had half a dozen 260 long w/b cars. Even when under 10 years old they were rusty and doors splitting apart . By the late 90s they were all stuffed. And worth $300 as a trade. Sold some to the wreckers and others to 'enthusiasts' We never got 1600s in 2 door. most of them were rallied and beat to hell and ofcourse rusted as well. A friend had one and the amount of rippled panels was about par for the course as they were so thin
Boy does that bring back memories. in the early 70s I was living in Hawaii I had a Datsun 510 sedan. I haven’t thought about that car in years. it was such a gutless little thing but it got me around the island. Ha!!!
My dad and I each had a 510, blast to drive. Troublesome, nice for POS. 260 carbs were problematic. Fish mouth grill came on the '72 MGB. At the end when they're standing in front of that Datsun PU.
While I was busy looking for possible 240z Project car and I can't find any, this vid was spot on popped up of my notification. Now back to the Z hunt off I go
@@415s30 it really is tough, I find this Gen 1 Type S30Z but owner is asking for $35,000 for this No engine, and completely rusted 240z. I took a very hard pass He's asking too much for something that is not even complete, glass are shattered, fenders and transmission are missing, floor board's got a gallon size hole in it. Even the steering rack is missing. I don't mind if the engine is the only thing missing since engine swap is an option, but his deal was buy this complete incomplete junk for 35K
10th Anniversary ZX came out in 1980. The turbo version came out in 1981 as an automatic only. 1982 and 1983 got the 5 spd. turbo in multiple colors available.
For my honeymoon in 1980, my bride and I went to California. I returned home with an Offy dual plane intake for my 510, and installed the Holly 2 barrel...ran great... best car I ever had.
My first car was a 1983 Nissan by Datsun maxima, that thing was fully loaded for its day, power everything with sunroof and a clarion head unit with eq from the factory
I had a chance in high school to buy a track ready 510 two door with massive wheel flares that had had the hood fly up and smash the windshield at 130 on the Pasadena freeway. I had the $800 to buy it, but no money to fix it. Also, there was a shot in there of an El Camino, and later a Datsun pickup without a bed. I've always dreamed of grafting a Datsun pickup bed onto a 510 wagon chassis to make my own Datsun El Camino.
what an awesome collection! I'll be amazed to visit a place like that. Congrats Richard for the fabulous vehicles. I wish my father had a lot of cars like that.
Bre 510 clones are always cool that livery won't ever get old. A 432 240z would be cool to own. A local guy in my town has a unmolested 240z just sitting outside his house thinking of picking that bad boy up.
I spent a lot of passenger seat time in a burgundy colored Datsun 510 two door as a teen. My older friend's dad owned one and that was the car he got to drive. I had my first taste of peach brandy in that car.
My dad came rolling up in a brand new 1972 Datsun Z, and my face lit up. I was 12, and that was the coolest car I had ever seen, and especially cool being picked up from school, and driven at 100mph home. That was a pretty good speed in 1972! Later, when I was 15 1/2, I received my aunts Datsun 1200, and proceeded to switch it over from auto to stick, and replace the motor with a built engine that had a side mount Weber. The owner of the engine also had a 510 motor for $400 more, but he wouldn't sell it to me as it had 2 side mount Mikuni's (I think, might have been SU's) that he said, required a lot of tinkering with as they would fall out of adjustment. Just as well, I'd probably have killed myself with the extra 40hp.😁😎👍✌
I had a gold 810 with hounds-tooth interior and a 240Z engine. Loved that car, but sold it to get my first Saab, a 1979 EMS, 4 speed; green with green interior and Aztec wheels. I added a custom headers and 2" exhaust. Now on my 5th Saab
Tom, sincerely mate that was surprisingly brusque of you casting aside Richards offer of looking at his other shed, especially given just how humbly proud he looked offering to share his top shelf stuff with the tribe. Very unempathetic for a car guy I thought.
Hi, i am from south Africa and i had the Datsun 1600 deluxe and later the 1600SSS, They were great little cars in the early 70s but many electrical problems, the tail lights of the 1800 were very popular to fit the Ford Capri
I have a Mercedes 1962 220SE coupe which was sold new in City of Indianapolis ,PA. After the Studebaker Mercedes arrangement fell apart, it became a Datsun Dealership and I think it's still a Nissan Dealership today.
The very earliest Z cars had rear window defrosters with the heating elements running lengthwise to the car, not side-to-side. They changed for 72 I believe.
My 1st car when I was in high school back in 88 was a 74 260z. I spent every dime I made on her, legally and illegally back when Jim Cook Racing was about the only place to buy aftermarket parts, that flair kit was the Calif flair kit he has. She was built, from the front spoiler to the rear spoiler! I Loved that car and so did the cops!!!
I've seen 1 510 wagon...it was lowered, had actual wire wheels, and a decent paint job. But I couldn't decide what was the best part of the car: the 280z drivetrain that moved it, or the stereo system that shook it.🙂
The Datsun roadster of the shape shown originally came out with a 1500. A friend of mine had one until someone stole the wheels and then came back and stole the rest of the car!
I would like a 510 coupe, I have a 71 240Z we restored and I will never sell it. Triple carbs are the way to go. I have an orange early 71, you can tell right away from the chrome knob on the gas door if it's early 71 or before, obviously the Series 1 has the little vents under the rear window and is a giveaway for those. Vertical defroster lines in the hatch glass is early glass. Those hub caps are awful, get Watanabes. The bumpers changed because of the DOT, the Jaaaags got screwed on that too.
Great Video !! Welcome back Tom - you have been missed . My 1st car was my grandad´s 76 datsun cherry! I always wanted 240Z . I got offered one - but unfortunately the previous owner didn´t know it was for sale - so i walked away...
My first Datsun was a 1970 510 Wagon ( sported a Holley 500 2bbl and a Pacesetter header ) second was driven off the showroom floor 1974 620 pickup with a Detroit Locker ladder bars N50-15 tires and Mcleod clutch the third was a 1970 240"Z" I never got to restore .
In Mexico we only got the 4 door and wagon versions of the 510, of course they weren't called 510, but there are quite a lot still running around and for sale. A lot of them are still in decent condition.
I knew if he was a Datsun guy he'd have a least one Datsun 620 pickup, there's a white one missing it's bed, you guys stood in front of it near the end of the video, looks like a parts truck, I could use some parts off it! ;)
Bit rude that turning down see his other cars, he was obviously proud of them and I'm sure us subscribers wouldn't have minded seeing them.
I would have liked to see them too. Feels like home since this is less than an hour down the road from me!
If you watch until the end it shows a little of the nice cars... go back... beautiful old transam
They never went to the nice building... The trans am is in one of the buildings that is in this video. I can't believe anyone would turn down seeing his nice stuff. This video pretty much only shows his 3rd and 4th string vehicles.
There was some kind of "sensitivity" underlying the interplay between the two. Like them, I accept the imperfections. I like 510s.
Oh no Tom, let us see the other building too with the E type Jag & Sunbeam Alpine etc in it... Please do a part 2..
Anyone agree that Tom should have taken him up on his offer to see the building with the "pretty cars" too?
Absolutely!

With the modern 40/km/hour speed limits, cars from the 1800’s are legit too.
Hi Tom, We like pretty cars too. All cars and trucks. I had a 74/260Z and an 87/280 ZX back in the 80"s. I loved those cars! What fun.
We've missed Barnfinder for way too long! Glad Tom's back, thanks Hagerty.
Ps. Am I the only one who things Richard here reminds me of Grandpa from 'The Munsters'???
He reminded me of Darnell from Christine.

I bought one in mint condition, by the time I got it home the quarters were completely rusted out, lol.
I'm glad you're back and posting videos again Tom :)
17:18 It seems the guy didn't liked Tom's remark about not wanting to see the pretty cars.
I wanted to see them as well! That's what gives these barn finds hope!

I have been a Datsun fan since 1970 found my 510 shell five years ago added an SR20DET engine with upgrades and now at 325 Horsepower a real machine.
Hickory NC might be a mill village to Tom but it’s a metropolis to me. I go to Hickory to go to a big town. Go Crawdads!
Love that little Datsun 620 pick up at the end of the video. Want me one of those!
Yeah he didn't mention it.
I live in the same town as Richard and have known him for a long time. I'm gonna ask him about it next time I see him.
Very much enjoyed this one. Back when I was a young man , I worked in the race shop for Bob Sharp in Wilton Ct. Only job I ever had where You could go fishing at lunch time.
I loved all of it. Thank you Richard!! Sweet 510s!
Come on Tom, I want to see the other 27 as well.
I would have liked to see the other shed full 😢😢Tom
My all time favorite car was my red '71 240Z. I lost it in a flood. It was just the most fun you could have on four wheels.

Sure have missed you Tom, welcome back.
...I liked to walk around that whole place. A lot of camaros, pontiacs...amazing
Great to see Tom back on the road.

I know Tom has been WAITING to do this one!
Learned to drive in a 510 loved that car !!!
Adam Carolla says he'll take the whole lot!! You guys really need to do a show at his race garage.
I gotta 620, I absolutely love it, you guys are not a dieing breed at all! I got to drive a Z car and I fell in love, one day I will have a barn full!
At the end when he chuckled and said, “we like the crap!” it sounded like something Tom and Ray Magliozzi would have said. Nice episode.
Yes !!!....a mention of Cartalk..love those guys!!!

I absolutely love my 1969 521 DATSUN. Got all the 510 has and a bed too.

Amazing, Thanks for sharing Tom👍
Stay Safe👍
Not sure if this is intentional, but this video is "unlisted". Only found it if you manually looking through the playlist.
Edit: Was Fixed!
Heck, I would dearly love to have an early B210.
It’s the Honey Bee or nothing!
😂
I performed a weber conv on a Mitsu pickup. All I can say is....WOW!!!
I got a 1990 Nissan 300zx. Glad to see them going up in price💯👍🏽
Glad the show is back!
Tom you got to show that sweet blue car that your doing
Datsun 510 ! I clicked immediately.... you should do a part 2.... on the “pretty cars” too
Great episode.. back on the road Tom!
My Dad bought a new 1968 Datsun pickup and liked it so much he bought a new '68 510 for my Mom.
It is a dream of mine to one day own a garage filled with Datsuns! Beautiful cars that I have so many memories with. 😊 Great video!!
Hot Damn 510's !!!!
I love those are pocket rockets
I've owned that same color 79 10th anniversary Z. Loved it! Wish I could get another one.
I've seen 1 510 wagon...it was lowered, had actual wire wheels, and a decent paint job. But I couldn't decide what was the best part of the car: the 280z drivetrain that moved it, or the stereo system that shook it.🙂
The guys face when he said "cheap little Japanese sedan" 😅😅😅 he looked so offended 😆
Big wow from me, love the 240/260Z
510 is my favorite import car.
Bought a '84 F150 from this man
what a small world
I knew if he was a Datsun guy he'd have a least one Datsun 620 pickup, there's a white one missing it's bed, you guys stood in front of it near the end of the video, looks like a parts truck, I could use some parts off it! ;)
I would of loved to see the last garage that wasn’t shown
I have a set of 4 of those American racing wheels but they are 15 inch. I happy to see the videos again
I have a 510 resto-mod being built at the moment and im looking to do a 240Z or 280Z one day!!
Oh yeah, I was an enthusiast. My first car was a ‘69 Datsun 510. I had a total of three of them, two were drivers.
