For those of you who are interested -- Larry is doing great this show season. He has won EVERYTHING he has entered in so far. We are also proud to announce that we now have two of Larry's babies running around here. Next year we hope to have 4 babies from Larry. Both of his fillies from this year have inherited the "jump gene". One started jumping the first week. She is 17 inches tall -- and already routinely jumps over 18 inch bars.
Larry absolutely LOVES jumping -- ESPECIALLY at shows. He seems to kick it up a notch when the crowd is there cheering him on. I don't have any video from cameras positioned to see him as he comes OFF the course -- but let me assure you -- HE IS HAVING A BLAST and you can see it on his face. The reason we decided to train Larry as a jumper was it was obvious at home that he loved to jump over things.
In this video, shot in 2009, Larry was a 7-year old stallion. He is one of the main breeding stallions here at Sunset Mountain Miniatures, so he will probably never be gelded. He is currently 9 years old -- and looking forward to jumping in 2011. His handler in this video was Anna Barnes, who was about 14 at the time, I think. For more videos of Larry see our channel, SunsetMtnMiniatures. He now has 4 World Championships and 2 Reserve World Championships. Three of those from 2010.
"Larry" is competing at the AMHA World Championship Show this week in Fort Worth. Larry just won his 2nd championship of the week. On Saturday he took the Reserve World Championship (2nd Place) in Youth 13 and older. Today in Amateur Jumper he won World Champion. Highest jump was 42 inches. He was the only horse with a perfect score through all rounds. Tomorrow he jumps in Open Jumper. Thanks to all of you who are cheering for him!
Larry is in training and jumping only about 6 months out of the year. Larry only jumps on soft surfaces (loose dirt). Larry also gets regular visits from the equine chiropractor (which he loves!). We also plan to halt Larry's show jumping at some point between age 13 and 15 -- depending on his condition. We love this little horse and want to enjoy him and keep him happy and healthy for a long life.
We have just completed all jumper events for 2010 at AMHA World. Larry did even better this year. He won World Champion in Open and Amateur -- both with a perfect score. In Youth he took a Reserve Championship -- (2nd place). I will be posting videos from this year soon. Thanks again to all who routed for him!
Knoedlii - Yes, it is high. Little horses can jump higher proportionally than the big horses due to their muscle/mass ratio. We work very hard to make sure it remains safe for our horses. During practice we don't jump this high. The horses get vitamins and joint supplements, and massages. We keep them in top physical shape. The only horses we jump are those that love it. Larry loves it. We hope he will be able to continue to compete for many more years. But we will put his health and fun first!
Megan the higest jumps were 44 inches -- the highest ever used in AMHA World competitions up to that point. Yes, we breed these. "Larry" has 3 babies on the ground that are for sale right now. You can find out more about our horses and Larry by looking at our website. Also Larry has his own FB page "Wizards Spell Troubles Exemplary" and the ranch has an FB page at Sunset Mountain Miniature Horses. Please visit! And if you would like a "Larry Baby" -- let us know!!!
This is the actual juming that i like!!!! Unlike that Dreassage or English riding this is fun and cool to watch!! And it doesnt hurt the horse with a bit or whip or spurs!
The hardest part is finding a horse who likes to jump. Then teaching them to trust you that you will not lead them to a jump too high or into something dangerous. After that it is mainly a matter of timing and conditioning.
I jump my miniature and I doubt mine would think of jumping that high, and I do alot of training with her , these little guys must have amazing trainers! Did you ever clicker train a mini im beging to think i might start. If you have what do you think of it?
OHMYGOSH! is it pretty simple to teach a mini to do this? im doing a lease to own on a half mini and want to show, and i love jumping my big horses so this would be great for my soon too be pony! Lerry is amazing!
@ Joce Parks a bit doesn't hurt a horse it is simply an extension of our arms. And a whip and spurs don't hurt a horse either they r used to cue horses.
We are not trying to train either baby to jump yet -- they are too little for serious training. They are doing it for fun. They jump out of their pen and back in by jumping the low bar. And they jump objects in the yard when they play. We will try to post a baby jumping video soon.
We welcome anyone using this video so long as the following conditions are met: 1) The copyright of Sunset Mountain Miniatures must be mentioned or referenced somewhere or somehow. There is risk to the horses. That is true for any athletic endeavor. We minimize that by doing the following: We do not start training jumpers until they are at least age 2. We do not show jumpers until they are age 3. Larry receives extra vitamins and a joint supplement (we use CetylM). We keep Larry in very good shape -- but we do not jump every day. We jump low jumps every other day during training. We never jump higher than 38 inches in training.
cool I never knew they were so to scale to a regular large horse. I always thought they were short stubby horses. I wonder if anyone has tried to breed miniature giraffes like on that commercial
For those of you who would also like a little jumper - Larry has 3 2012 babies. All of them have already started jumping. For more information please see our web-site. See the web-site link in the video description.
mysmellyhorse - in AMHA Jumper it is height that matters, not speed. In some other registries (such as AMHR) they judge on how fast the horses go through the course. But I think AMHA is better -- jumper is judged on how high the horse can jump. Speed does not equal height. Most horses (Larry included) can jump higher if they start slow and are able to time their jump precisely. Also when I show in the "Amateur" class I can't run very fast :) So I walk between jumps.
Why is it that the pony goes back to walk between jumps? I just ask as with horses there is so much work put into maintaining a balanced rhythem between fences. I hope this doesn't sound rude, I am just interested.
@lauriekaaj Thank You! Take a look at what he did this year when he one won of 3 championships in the video titled "AMHA_World_Am_Jumper_2010.mp4" Or at what he does while in training in the video titled "Little Horse Practices High Jumps" I also plan to post some new videos of other miniatures in our herd at a public "expo" next week. You will get to see lots of small cute miniatures in that one -- along with them spending time with families and kids. Thanks again for watching!
I think the better handler is the woman with the chestnut and white pony. The other one was kindof rough with her horse. Pressure on the bit shouldn't pull the horse's head to the side and make him open his mouth like that. I always favor the horse who does the best and appears most comfortable. That shows horsemanship, not force.
You can learn more about Larry by visiting his Face Book page -- look for "Wizards Spell Troubles Exemplary". You can also visit the Sunset Mountain Miniatures Face Book page. And we have a lot about Larry on our web site (sunsetmtn com). Larry also has two new fillies -- and both of them are already jumping. Watch our video "Larry Babies Can Jump!"
We do not start training our jumper horses until they are at least age 2. And we don't start serious training until age 3. They cannot compete until age 3. The babies jump on their own. You can usually tell a good jumper when you see a horse decide to go over an obstacle instead of around it. The babies just jump stuff like rocks and limbs in the pasture.
@Knoedlii If he couldn't and didn't want to do it I'm sure he wouldn't do it. Larry OBVIOUSLY loves to jump. It is higher than him.. but Minis are extremly athletic. my mini jumps higher than his head aswell. When he doesn't want to anymore.. he refuses.
I can't imagine this is ok for the pony. The jumps are FAR too high (why should it be so high anyway? Can't you enjoy the jumps without it being so high?) and the risk of breaking a bone is reality. Why do people claim they love their animals and then do this to them?
Yes it's cute, but in my opinion too high … Everyone's crying about the big jumps bigger horses have to take, but that these hurdles (?) are higher than the ponies nobody realizes. It's the same like jumping S**, no difference… Don't like it :(

Ceux qui n'aiment pas .... Vous ne vous rendaient pas compte du boulot ! Des années de travail!
I would not let a mini jump this high, but it s amazing to see the minis in action :) Nice video!
Wow! I won't say who I was voting 4 but, this video had me in the edge of my seat! I has to no who wins! They work so hard! Really cute! :)
Larry is a BEAUTIFUL little overo! i LOVE him :)

My little mare Mercedes is a professional trotter in my opinion. When she trots she lifts up her feet so daintly
I like that , it's very cool and they jump very very good :O
sorry i'm french :)

Oh -- and please let us know where you use the video at :)
The 2012 babies, less than half a year old, have started jumping??
Congrats of the win, but I'm not sure about the jumping fillies/foals.
Now I know what to do with my minis :D

daaaaaaannnnngggggg these minis can jump!!! my 15.2 qh cant even jump that high!!!
These little wonders are out jumping some horses much larger than they are. :)
how high were the jumps and beautiful horses. you breed them?
they jump great :)
Watch Larry "walk over jumps" in his youtube video "Larry Walks Over Jumps" and you can see that speed does not really matter.

Does anyone know any other shows like this I want to start showing my mini
Yes larry won
Wow I don even jump my horse that high
Are these horses bred for this? Also can you do this with a gelding, I know I couldn't show my miniature in some cart shows because he is a gelding.
I want to ride that pony as it jumps over that jump and I'm 5'6 and if I owned him I probably would try lol
