But cavalry tips are still important - for example, if Bannerlord is anything like Warband, you can run your horse into someone to stagger/stun them and then hit them while they're recovering for easy, unblockable damage. Also, going over the asymmetric nature of cavalry combat would be good too - again, if it's anything like Warband, your left side is your strong side when using a lance with a shield, and you can stab with a lance in almost a full 180 degree arc over your left shoulder, but your freedom of movement is very limited when stabbing to the right. However, you do *slightly* sacrifice your range, which is important when a guy with a same length lance or a longer lance is charging at you from your left. Your right hand side has limited freedom, but you can reach the furthest with your lance Meanwhile on the defense, your left arm is holding your shield, and it's more convenient to block melee attacks coming from the front left, but you can lean further to the right than you can to the left, so pointing your horse slightly to the left and your body to the right allows you to block a broader range of melee attacks and arrow fire when moving in formation, or kiting around a mob of infantry with throwing weapons (like Sea Raiders) to make them waste ammo. As a guy Who has played a couple thousand to many hours of warband, this is a video that was needed in warband I remember when I was new and had to learn purely from people I played with and then practice it against them, great vid.
So many things that I learned... Never knew that there was a difference between last second blocking and just hold block for the whole time. Thanks, thats so helpful.
Cool video! I hope those white 'swoosh' effects added to the projectiles will be gone in the full version of the game, because it ruins the immersion and realism for me, and simply looks utterly silly. I also wish that shields would always be working as a blocking kind of armour, even if when worn on your back. (it should be covering you from arrows hitting you in the back, right?) I also wonder which of those combat mechanics were already identical in Warband and which of them are clearly an improvement implemented in Bannerlord.
I already know better with warband's multiplayer and naked feinting gods, I am not prepared for bannerlord, I'm pretty chill and casual lol. Its still fun if you dont take it serious, but if you even start taking it serious and keep geting annihilated by these naked russians with 2handers, it does get frustrating, so thats why I dont take it as serious anymore. I just hope I enjoy the campaign and they don't change too many things.
I've really been looking forward to this game for years, but I'm disappointed by this footage, too. 22:00 You still have rank-and-file units splitting up, running around like chickens instead of any formation system. They're still splitting up to chase after horses, ffs. For a game which has a stapled-on morale system this makes even less sense. The combat system is identical, and very limited. You can't have a realistic combat system without angular attacks.
I love you, it's exactly what I researched for. This fight system is AMAZING. It's just the most realistic that I have never seen. Big thanks to you And to the devs for this great work.
This was most helpful :) Thank you! I wish the tutorial actually explained all this. Though can't help but long for combat to be even more like Mordhau.
Nice video, unless I am missing a few things from warband it seems the combat actually has even more depth which surprises me. Excellent! In particular I am glad they have effectively tightened up the damage from swings so cheesing people like you can in warband will be more difficult if even possible at all, though not sure how I feel about this handling stat... it kind of sounds RNG.
Viking Conquest was a changing game for several years, and the changes they made were amazing. You can trust that the time they're taking is well spent
Tbf the game looked nearly finished about 5 years ago. It's still early access but really it seems like a full game release but they're calling it early access just in case it still has some underlying bugs they haven't cleared yet.
The real question I have is can I equip my character with 16 heavy throwing axes and freeload off teammates or equip no weapons go full armor and pick up other peps weapons
In Bannerlord multiplayer has a fixed class system, where you pick a unit you play as, and then one of three perks that modify what weapons or armor it has. You do not get to pick equipment the way you could in Warband anymore.
What a great video! As it turns out, I occasionally run panels at PAX about weapon combat in games, and if you're perhaps interested in joining something in the UK (e.g. EGX) feel free to drop me a line and we can discuss.
Seriously thanks for all this info, I've been playing the Beta thinking almost everything is the same as warband in terms of melee combat. Appreciate your effort :)
Excellent video. Will share ! One thing : in M&B:W, your movement had a big impact on damage. For example, if you moved from right to left while also swinging right to left, you got a hefty bonus to damage. Is this still the case? ... EDIT: just noticed you explain all that in your "How damage works" video.
I find the encumberance system a bit extreme. A good-fitting suit of armor should be less encumbering than the most hip-riding backpack of equal weight, let alone a shoulder pack. Real world full plate armor that was used under battlefield conditions, not jousting tournaments, weighed maybe 15-25 kg. Encumbrance with a 50 lb hip-riding backpack is noticeable but... definitely not going to stop you from running. And with armor that weight is exactly on your center of mass, not lopsided on your back like a backpack you'd use for unsupported multi-day hikes. You do get tired faster from that weight, though again I question whether it would be as severe with correctly-fitting armor as it would with a backpack. Ultimately I think the encumbrance system, while maybe balanced, is not very realistic. Too penalizing for weight.
Just picked the game up, never played the first. I've punished the enemies of the Emperor as an Astartes. I've boxed as Mike Tyson. I've been to Vietnam as a Sniper. I took the Lord of Change's head as Franz. This game... this game has brought me down down to earth realllllllllll quick. Extremely tricky for me, I love it. Even the training ground fights so far are life and death struggles.
Regarding the physx based system the most advantagous and also most hilarious is to make actual use of real life physic knowledge: A rider on a horse, and also said riders weaponry, are within a reference frame of movement If the horse moves with 30kmh, so does the rider, so does the riders weaponry A javelin being thrown from a dead stop may travel with a speed of 30kmh too (not actual fact though, just using it as example) A javelin thrown with a force that makes it travel 30kmh WHILE the person throwing it is traveling on a horse with 30kmh, will travel with 60kmh outside of the reference frame of the rider himself What does that mean ingame? You get massive damage bonusses for javelins thrown from horse back * You get massive ragdoll physx from javelin hits** *Same goes for all other projectiles too **I managed to force an enemy to do a double backflip before landing dead on the ground, laughed my ass off :D
@@unknownorigin7433 the thing is warband was nice for its time but the clunky fighting is quite shit and bannerlord is just copypaste. even tho i expected something better since its gonna be released after 5 damn years
Id say thats what most people were looking for. Newer version of warband with better graphics and more mechanics. Very few of us are going to play this vanilla.
Zerkovich: So in Mount & Blade II there are directional blocks, active blocks, shields which are easier to block with... Mordhau: Just right click right before an attack hits you. Doesn't matter where you're aiming it'll work. Seriously, this seems like a pretty good system. I'm excited to try this game out. After attempting to stab people in the legs in Mordhau, only to have their daggers which are several feet above where my sword was block my attack, this should be a good change.
Holy crap I completely forgot about Bannerlord!! I've been moping about Cyberpunk getting pushed back and Baldur's Gate 3 being so far out. Really glad this popped up in my RUclips suggestions.
Yeah I've sunk like 300 hours into this single player and asked Google for a little clarity on how handling works, assuming it was just the high/low damage roll thing all RPGs have. Oh. Oh, I was wrong.
You said balanced and unbalanced wayyy too much. Repetition does not tickle the ears....when you said strike instead of attack for the third time..I was so proud. Very informative video. Particularly the bits about parry, crush through, bash, balancing and stances. However, stating the default keys for these would've been good...
can you just jump online and fight? so kind of like mordhau? but less heavy and slow movement? I know its more realistic with it being slow and heavy movements but I would prefer something a bit lighter if that makes sense, any help would be greatly appreciated.
The crossbows work like the others? Would be nice if taleworld create a mechanic with right click: aim, and left click: fire, for mods that uses fire weapons, like the Napoleonic DLC for Warband.
Easy to pick up but hard to master is how I’d best describe M&B Combat. Great video however, as a more competitive player chambers are perhaps the most useful tool in combat, shouldn’t be as understated, if of course you’d like to take the game more seriously .
Refunded the game immediatly after playing the absolutely clunky, garbage combat that is this game. PROTIP: circle literally any enemy to the right and start swings immediatly from your left side and you can kill any enemy.

Didn't shields also work when on your back in mount n blade warband?
14:35 Santa casually flying over. Probably as a blessing of this excellent video!
I'm speechless - the BEST video about combat ... !!! Respect man!!
There will be a new multiplayer mode that allow you to command an army against enemy's army. Get your archers shoot those crazy naked twohanders!
imagine if somebody can mod mordhau style combat into bannerlord
That would be very bad for a full scale single player battle imo
warband copypaste with slightly better graphics and new stuff . nowhere near as good what it should be after 5 years
Suspicious Raven what would you change?
So you played single player?
I've really been looking forward to this game for years, but I'm disappointed by this footage, too.
22:00
You still have rank-and-file units splitting up, running around like chickens instead of any formation system.
They're still splitting up to chase after horses, ffs.
For a game which has a stapled-on morale system this makes even less sense.
The combat system is identical, and very limited. You can't have a realistic combat system without angular attacks.
@@Valchrist1313 Have you played the Beta? You really cant judge it from the snipits of gameplay in this.
@@hermicky6833 I can, and I did judge it.
If you can't judge something without playing it, then I had ought to own every game indiscriminately.
oh my god this is so detailed
So chambering attacks is like parrying. Very good technique.
Very informative and easy to understand. Kudos!
Love that in the feints section you kill someone called P. Enus Invaginus
I love you, it's exactly what I researched for. This fight system is AMAZING. It's just the most realistic that I have never seen. Big thanks to you And to the devs for this great work.
14:35 christmas is coming early this year on March 31st.
I want an official esl Bannerlord pro league
Insightful video full of useful tips, thank you.
So, would buying Mount and Blade: Warband on the xbox be worth it then for now till this new one drops for early access?
I'd buy it but only cause the first game is heaps of fun,
nah bro buy it on PC for the mods. Warband vanilla is nowhere near as awesome as mods like Floris and Diplomacy.
What Nick said. It runs on literally any pc and it's way better with mods
@@SillyWilly17 gekokujo, 1257, and perisno, are a must have with warband.
Do you recommend first person? I come from chivalry and mordhau so third is weird for me
At the moment it's a bit narrow to be a good idea really. But hopefully it'll get some improvements for release.
It is so weird to be playing Bannerlord. I’m so use to it being “coming soon” that I could never imagine really playing it
WOW this is detailed. Both the guide and the game. Nice guide
Wow how many of these features were already in warband?
1:15 Santa clouse in the left top of the video xdddddddd
you explained what feinting is but not how to do it????
This was most helpful :) Thank you!
I wish the tutorial actually explained all this.
Though can't help but long for combat to be even more like Mordhau.
Nice video, unless I am missing a few things from warband it seems the combat actually has even more depth which surprises me. Excellent! In particular I am glad they have effectively tightened up the damage from swings so cheesing people like you can in warband will be more difficult if even possible at all, though not sure how I feel about this handling stat... it kind of sounds RNG.
lookinfg forward some mounted archery even if just virtual
Holy fuck. This looks insanely good.
damage zone in mordhau would have been great
Anyone else notice the name at 12:20 or just me?
Gotta love Santa in the background 6:10
They need to add stamina to mele... really
Ugh. Early access is planned for about a year. This game still feels like it's never going to fully release.
They said early access has at least 300 hours of content, with all the main systems already in the game. And they did the same thing for Warband.
Ok
@@Askorti That's sad. I wanna go naked with a big ass greatsword and kill everyone
What do you mean, couple of months? It's coming out next month!
Oh they added footwork mechanic nice
Nice run-through of the melee system. I really like the additions they’ve made. I’m curious about the partial hits etc... on shields though.
Why there is so much blur around ? Should turn blur off. Looks like blurry shit.
There must be keybinds for attack directions.
What controls do you use, mouse or keyboard attack directions?? I am not able to make deints... how do you do them?? Are they implemented?
I have never played Warband, so is this a online multiplayer, or offline open world? or both?
Both. Single player sandbox where you go from rags to riches. Or Online PVP.
@@Zerkovich Sweet, thanks
Good tips, I didnt know the blocking trick, I'll have to try it
Excellent video. Will share !
One thing : in M&B:W, your movement had a big impact on damage. For example, if you moved from right to left while also swinging right to left, you got a hefty bonus to damage. Is this still the case? ... EDIT: just noticed you explain all that in your "How damage works" video.
It's always fun plunging a javeling in the face of a horserider flying towards you at mach 3 speed
Regarding the physx based system the most advantagous and also most hilarious is to make actual use of real life physic knowledge:
A rider on a horse, and also said riders weaponry, are within a reference frame of movement
If the horse moves with 30kmh, so does the rider, so does the riders weaponry
A javelin being thrown from a dead stop may travel with a speed of 30kmh too (not actual fact though, just using it as example)
A javelin thrown with a force that makes it travel 30kmh WHILE the person throwing it is traveling on a horse with 30kmh, will travel with 60kmh outside of the reference frame of the rider himself
What does that mean ingame?
You get massive damage bonusses for javelins thrown from horse back *
You get massive ragdoll physx from javelin hits**
*Same goes for all other projectiles too
**I managed to force an enemy to do a double backflip before landing dead on the ground, laughed my ass off :D
Pretty much like warband..
Just like the simulations
kinda good for the nostalgia also some would say ahh it doesn't look like warband!
@@unknownorigin7433 the thing is warband was nice for its time but the clunky fighting is quite shit and bannerlord is just copypaste. even tho i expected something better since its gonna be released after 5 damn years
@@ruse3436 understood anyways getting too old for gaming the new generation must carry the torch
However, stating the default keys for these would've been good...
i hope you can still chamber a coaching lance. cant wait to get my knife against charging lances
can you just jump online and fight? so kind of like mordhau? but less heavy and slow movement? I know its more realistic with it being slow and heavy movements but I would prefer something a bit lighter if that makes sense, any help would be greatly appreciated.
The crossbows work like the others? Would be nice if taleworld create a mechanic with right click: aim, and left click: fire, for mods that uses fire weapons, like the Napoleonic DLC for Warband.
PLEASE don't let these changes to combat land Bannerlord in the realm of Chivalry and Mordhau's extensive exploit techniques.
Super psyched that there is a dedicated bash attack, especially with a shield. Awesome
