I look at actors like Gemma, wondering why she doesn't have more star power. She's one of those actors that you see in a lot of stuff but nobody really acknowledges.
I find only one thing problematic with this trailer, but it is capable of ruining the whole show. For people who haven't seen the original, Sister Ruth is the most important role in the movie, maybe even more important than Gemma Arterton's role (Sister Clodagh), even if Sister Clodagh is the protagonist. I'm not spoiling anything, but Kathleen Byron who played sister Ruth in 1947, in the third and last act of Black Narcissus takes the movie to a whole other level, all by herself with her performance. It was a very captivating, charming but also disturbing and unsettling role, thus very demanding, and i don't know if Aisling Franciosi's acting fulfills all those criteria. I really hope i'm wrong, because the original movie is one of my favorites
I thought that the author, Rumer Godden, hated the film version of her book back when she was alive and never wanted another movie adaptation made. And yet here we are, trying to outdo the marvelous Deborah Kerr with another telling of Black Narcissus? Aren't there any other books interesting enough to become films?
The original was such a classic with Kathleen Byron, why the devil did they remake it. No one can compare or compete with her portrayal. She scared the crap out of me 😳 The remake just looked limp & sad

Rebecca has been remade several times. The Olivier version is classic, but some of the others are good as well. The one with Charles Dance is exceptional. Remember, also, that these films are based on books first, not on original screenplays. The Black Narcissus is based off of a 1939 novel by Rumer Godden, and of course, Rebecca is based off of Daphne Du Maurier's novel of the same name. With the source material being literary it lends itself to multiple adaptations. Just look at Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, and Sherlock Holmes for example.
@@ScottishTennant I think there's always room for a remake but only if they add something to the original, rather than just making an imitation. Take 'Suspiria'; the 2018 version kept all the elements of the original 1977 film but took it to a completely new level. 'My Cousin Rachel', on the other hand, just felt like a retelling of the original (not helped by a lack of chemistry between the leads) whilst 'Jamaica Inn' has never been successfully translated to the screen, so it will continue to be a candidate for a remake. Occasionally a film is better than the source material; 'Picnic at hanging Rock' for example. Yet I'm finding it difficult to sit through the recent TV adaptation when the original is so near perfect.
