Oh my gosh, Jay is a musical genius. This makes Crashite's animation hit so much harder cause right before this Eurylochus reaches for Polites' headband which Odysseus is using as a hair band. This musical keeps finding new ways to make me cry and I'm all for it.
I think so, I kinda feel like telemachus is the thematic successor of Polites. His song that's coming up (at least in the old snippets) sounds and has lyrics that kinda reflect Polites in them.
@@AtomicFoxMimi ooo yes, especially the parts where it parallels about light "we can light up the world here's how to start" / "but boy i wish i could so i could bring the world some light"
It also shows that polites death has affected eurylochus's judgement because he is being extremely careful and questions every decision because he doesnt want what happened to polites to happen to Odysseus.
i love how it's reflected in some of the lyrics odysseus sings too :) "i still believe that we can be kind / lead from the heart / and see what starts" calling back to "whatever we face / we'll be fine if we're leading from the heart"
Plus did you hear the high harmonies during those lines that cut out as soon as Eury started singing? I swear to the stars that's Polites showing up in Ody's brain as a positive thing and then his *death* showing up in Eury's brain as a negative thing
Man I can't wait for when Telemachus befriends Athena and then we find out later from Jay that he used another chord progression from Open Arms in that song as well.
You’re an evil mastermind my good sir. Watching this video after the latest release is such a massive punch to the gut, it probably is starting to get a bit old but at this rate we will really need a therapy arc of sorts to recover from all the pain and misery! On a different note, I do love learning more and more about the backstory and creative process behind EPIC and look forwards to videos like this one, so thank you for sharing with us!
Things like this is why I'm absolutely obsessed with this musical. It would have been easy to NOT add these little details but you DID. I love trying to listen and find them. I love when you make these videos to talk about them. It shows how much you absolutely love what your doing and it's hard not to love it too.
How convenient for this short to come up as I’m binging animatics of Luck Runs Out and listening to it on repeat this whole day. I love musical nods like this!! It’s part of the reason I fight for this series with people even when they put down some of the lyrics. Lyrics can whatever but the instrumental SLAPS
0:39 YOU KEEP HITTING US WITH OUR SOFTIE STOP IT PLEASE😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 0:45 OMG. Odysseus: where is this coming from my friend? Eurylochus: I just don’t wanna see another life end. p-p-polites??
I have freaked out over different hidden bits in epic and stuff AT LEAST 5 times today. All my friends know because I won’t stop updating them about it. This is torture
Jorge, your attention to detail in your work is so amazing. I love it when you share the stuff you hide in the songs because seeing your joy and passion in your work brings me so happiest ❤
JORGE I FOUND ONE, In Horse and the Infant, the way Zeus said, a vision, cannot be outrun, and I don't think you're ready, IN Mutiny, Eurylochus sings similar to Zeus when he said and hunger is so heavy..., and then Zeus showed up the next song 😮😮😮❤❤❤
I adore that you not only madeall these musical references but that you're also pointing these out, because yes, fuinding them on our own is fun, but there's the risk that we miss them.
I just stumbled into your music and i love it. I checked how many songs are out there and got to this video. These musical-ish songs with your voice and the voice from the other singers combined with the old stories rewritten in a new version are wonderful to listen to. I also like the way your being happy and hyped about your work (and you really can be^^). It is so delightful and i can feel how your energy gets to me. It may sounds a bit odd (i am just re-reading my comment), but i just want to tell you, that I really love your work and good nature. Hopefully you produce more of this stories/music and it is profitable to you, without loosing the reason/vision of your doing. Keep your spark ❤️
I should say, I'm amazed with how you sharing small details with your audience, like we're your closest friends. And I'm in love in how you obsessed with your own project to adding such a small but meaningful things, it's so cool I can't describe. You're the best, thank you so much for your work🩷🩷🩷
I always knew Polites had a lasting effect on Odysseus because of the line "I still believe in goodness, I still believe that we can be kind," it's basically Ody's way of remembering Polites
"Lead from the heart and see what starts" calling back to " we’ll be fine if we’re leading from the heart" showing how one character impacts another as well.
You gotta respect the guy for adding so much detail into the music, I absolutely love it lol and listening to the music I’m like “I’ve read the Oddessy so I know how this ends BUT WTF THIS MUSIC MAKES ALL OF THIS SO MUCH SADDER!!!”
The fact that you can realise that Ody is thinking of Polities at that moment WHITHOUT knowing a lick of music proves how legendary this musical is. You are a GENIUS my friend 🫡
i also like how there's still a difference between the two chord progressions- when odysseus adapts it to his own song, it still has a brisk, strong and urgent feel that feels so inherently odysseus (versus polites' original chord progression being a little more broken up and fluid and relaxed)
That's awesome. I wanna ask though. In the original Odyssey, Polyphemus curses Odysseus to be the only one of his crew who makes it back to Ithaca alive. In the song Polyphemus when Polyphemus says "You will be the final man to die" is that a reference to that or a completely random coincidence that just fits? Love Epic btw!
Every time I listen to a fast piano (i.e. the beginning of Ruthlessness) I think about Athena. I think she never really left him after her goodbye, but still watches and protects him from afar...
You are a very evil man Mr Jalapeño. Also love how the tune in this song as “How much longer ‘til your luck runs out?” has the same tune as “How are we supposed to trust you now?” and “How much longer must I suffer now?” in Mutiny. It really nails in these moments where the crew has the most doubt in Odysseus throughout the musical.
Jorge you are actually so smart and talented. I Lowkey look up to you. You think so much about how to put little details into this masterpiece. I love you 🫡❤️
I was literally just listening to these two songs and noticing the connections here!!! 😭 I’ve also been trying to decide if any of Polites’s instruments play during “I still believe in goodness…and see what starts”?
Jay's doing the foreshadowing thingy again, I can feel it in my headphones-😓🎧✨ Also Jay, with all these Polites (RIP buddy🥲) fun facts comings to light, I can see why our waterworks are not stopping anytime soon-😭🙏🏽🎶✨
I have been holding this in since I first watched the video about the ‘danger in nearby’ motif, but WHY, Jay, WHY… is the ‘danger is nearby motif’ in Warrior of the Mind, when Odysseus Athena sing: Odysseus: ‘show yourself. I know you’re watching me show yourself. I can see you’ Athena: ‘how can you see through my spell?’ O: ‘haha I was lying and you fell for my bluff….ahaha’ 😏 The motif is in both of the versions…..WHY?????????!!!!!!!!!
Oh my god that hurts so much! But now I have to know in Thunder Bringer the first tune that starts it sounds like Athena‘s goodbye when she says ‘this way!’ Please tell me if I’m wrong, but that is what it sounds like and me and my friend nearly flipped our chairs!
