I hope he starts to focus on youtube for a few years to get the ball rolling and then he’d have pretty much as much money as he’d ever want to work on preservation. I know he’s not hurting for cash but he could really get some insane viewership with the work he does, and like all the shows he’s done that we’re on TV would’ve reaxhed so many more people on here. I’ve had to search HARD online to find his shows and a bunch, in the end i wasnt even able to find what i wanted.
That orange colored meat from the Myan ciclid is the best eating piece on the plate! They get orange from eating freshwater shrimp and other crustaceans ... I just finished off a plate full of Myans and Oscars from the glades
Lmao- that inro was hilarious! Reminded me of my group of friends. I love how Forrest still has a passion like a child for what he does, running around smiling and laughing. - dude’s awesome
I am Trinidadian, and we actually stuff the Armored Catfish (scrub them with a hard brush first) and then stuff with fresh green seasonings and tomatoes, celery, and onions etc, and then they can be baked or cooked in a stew! Makes it a million times better!
We call "Vieja de agua" ("Water Hag") to armoured catfish down here in Argentina. No fisherman will aim for that species but they'll probably eat it if hungry enough and nothing else was caught. They do say some restaurants sell it as a delicacy.
Armoured catfish/pleco and tilapia are 2 of most invasive fish in my country. There were some youtubers making videos where they cooked n eat this plecos(deep fried) and they said it tastes better than tilapia. Also plecos's egg now are sought after for fishing bait. Hopefully this can reduce the number of these invasive fish
Pleco in coconut milk. The way it is prepared here in the Philippines particulary in Marikina is they roast the plecos first to soften the shell and get most of the meat. Once done, it will be sautéed with onions, garlic, ginger and finger chillies. Then coconut milk is added then chilli leaves or moringa leaves.

In my country Philippines, we have these invasive armored catfish (Pleco) and we recently discovered that they are good for eating just remove the skin.

I love invasive hunting so much I can’t think of a better time having fun it the outdoors and knowing your filling your belly and helping your wilderness
The Mayan cichlids are really good ,my kids and I catch them when we can and bake them just as you would snapper. We live in the Fort Myers area and the fish are everywhere. From Port Charlotte south to Naples east to Miami. So many amazing tasting fish here. No shortage.
Honestly being an "invasive species" hunter would be such a dream job...especially for me as a native Floridian in love with the glades. Peaceful quiet, nature, nonstop fishing and good eats.
If you would have soaked those fish in a cold brine like dill pickle juice would have pulled out a lot of flavors and then making a potato soup with fish after would be better
Forrest trying to imitate the florida man not realizing we dont dare go barefoot on the edge of fresh water at night. Lucky you didnt get bit by a cotton mouth my man ive lived in south florida and have learned this the hard way.. Barefoot everywhere EXCEPT freshwater edge man
Yeah i hate to see venomous snakes at my house, normally i wouldn't bother them in the wild, but i dispatch all of them from my property. The nonvenomus snakes i let go, but not the others, i have pets and children
Wish I had known y’all were doing this I have a spot that has hundreds in a hundred yard stretch. They’re insane. I have another spot in cape where there are a lot as well but they are giant
It absolutely blows me away that there are so many Plecos in Fla. The video of that spring, with hundreds of Plecos, is disturbing. This is coming from someone in the aquarium hobby. Why anyone would release fish into the wild is beyond me. Most not Petco/Petsmarts, will take unwanted fish. I understand why the major stores won't take fish, but in my experience, the fish i've tried to give them were in better condition than what they were selling tho. Maybe just my area tho. Fortunately, i have 4 or 5, mom n' pop stores in my area as well. They all take unwanted fish, including redtails and such.
I've seen a couple vids on cleaning and prep of large gar for the dinner table. If you can get through the thick scales/armor and do the filleting properly, it's good eating. ... I'm curious about mudfish (bowfin). Surely there are folks who know how to prep that for dinner. Lots of bones? Anyway, great video. Those plecos look prehistoric.
FG - the cichlid is orange due to diet and activity level. It’s likely eating freshwater crustaceans and is more active in hunting. In addition to diet, its activity levels mean increased myoglobin.
We used to catch hundreds of the plecos a few years back here in Texas on the Rio Grande River. I haven't seen any in a while. If I knew that you can eat them i would've.
Soak the plecos meat in milk overnight, and it will help take away a lot of nasty flavors. Toss it in some seasoned flour, (I love using Musket Powder Red) dip it in egg wash, and put it in panoo bread crumbs. Pan fry until done, chop into small pieces. Serve on a salad of mixed spring greens (make sure it has arugula) with dried cranberries, mandarin orande slices, walnuts, bacon bits, and a balsamic vinaigrette, or dressing of your choice. If you want a sandwich instead, serve on a kaiser roll with the spring greens, slices of bacon, and a a layer of horseradish sauce spread on the roll.
