Customers are people who pay. They can be right if you don't mind. People who try to steal your labor and that time from your life by receiving a service and then refusing to pay are not customers.
I'm just outside of Toronto in Canada. A buddy of mine is an auto mechanic and he has his own private independent business and shop. A few years back, he went through the exact same thing, and with him it ended up going to court. So now, before fixing a vehicle he prints up a document/contract that highlights exactly what work needs to be (and may need to be done) and how much it will cost and the customer MUST read it, UNDERSTAND it and sign it before any work is done. This way HIS ass is covered and the customer is legally bound by the provisions of the contract. And you know what? He hasn't had any issues ever since.
I worked in a computer shop and had a customer come in talking about having to find a new mechanic because hers fired her. Let me tell you, we QUICKLY found out why her mechanic fired her...we did too.
I live in a small rural southern town, and do computer repair on the side, so I know what you are talking about, people think you are going fix there Dell hunk of junk from 02, install Win10 on it, and make it run like a new $600+ machine for $50, or less. I try to be nice, and say I can see if I have the RAM in stock in my parts bin for your machine to max it out, and install Chromium OS on it, or lightweight Lubuntu/Manjaro Budget Linux on it for $70 for my parts cost, and time, and yep they don't wanna do that, calling it a SCAM!! etc.. I had one crazy lady a few years back take her junky ACER Aspire One netbook she got on Walmart special after I kindly explained her options, and she was so pissed, she slung it across my driveway while it shattered into many many pieces, and while she was ranting I went to my laundry room, grabbed my broom, and dust pan, and said if you kindly would clean that up, or I call the cops, she cleaned up her mess, and it was the last I ever saw of her thankfully!!
I don’t remember specifics about this, but my ex worked in a computer shop. One day he came across kiddy porn. Standard procedure is to call the police, and they emptied out the entire shop. They had to spend the entire day phoning customers to explain why their computers were with the police. Needless to say I think the owner was raided too. I’m a network engineer by trade, but some days cars are so much easier.
I started out in body shops and that’s where I learned what a mechanics Lien was. We used them for unpaid work, towing and storage bills. It happens 🤷🏻♂️ always going to be someone who can’t or doesn’t want to pay their bill for the agreed amount..
Like the government, you don't pay taxes on it and they take your house even if it's just $1k they can take it. If you do not pay for your rent you've got 2 months to move out depending on your state. You do not pay for your light bill ok on that they are very lenient unless you're in a rich neighborhood then they either give you an entire month for free or the opposite and cut it the next hr you don't pay. Now that's company policy oooor some companies are ok with making a deal with you! You pay 25% of the bill for 4 weeks ... this mechanic gave this guy some serious leniency
I'm sure you mean paying to have a water pump changed would cost $1000, which sounds about right. It really depends on the vehicle. He said it's a timing belt type water pump (not the accessory belt that you can see under the hood, deeper inside the engine), and considering this is a DOHC V6, the timing belt (or belts) can be even more complicated, so yeah, this is probably a "worst case" water pump scenario for labor. Also, what he listed (timing belt, pump, and coolant) is basically a package deal, and probably less than $100 in parts.
Being a mechanic is a very tough job. I appreciate any good one out there. I know how much grief can be involved in not just the fixing but the customers. Thank you for being gracious Wizard.
I’m reminded of something my dad chanted like a mantra, “ when you are good natured, people take advantage of you “. The older I get the more I realize he was right.
Some people figured non-essential material things are more important than essential things, like getting their car fixed or buying the parts and tools needed for a DIY project. Sad.
Ryan Scherbluk somebody in the comments posted that this guy who dropped off the Mazda buys paint cans from Home Depot and then fills them up with water and returns them to the store.
I knew someone who did this to a mechanic's shop. I tried to help them (they were poor), but I cut my losses and dropped associating with them. When they do it to someone at the loss of their car, they won't think twice to do it to you for much less. Integrity is worth SOOOO much in this world! Thank you Mr. Wizard!
I feel your pain. I never take my car in unless I have the funds to cover the repairs and parts. We appreciate you and Mrs Wizard giving us your time to show us what goes on at Omega Clinic and I hope that you had a great holiday weekend!
Some customers think they're always right. My first boss told me something that has stuck with me ever since. "Some customers just arn't worth wasting time on, you can't make every single customer happy". If you have a hunch you're dealing with a difficult customer, quote them double and let them walk away
@biff s it s called pricing yourself out of a job to avoid it. what you re suggesting is taking the job and defrauding the customer. that s a very different concept.
biff s Nah man, claiming you did the work already is even worse. If someone calls you and says your car is fixed, you come to get it and the mechanic says “well.. actually it’s not. I assumed you wouldn’t pay.” That’s 10x worse. I get old cars fixed all the time, and shit like that would drive me to flame a mechanic shop. I’d much rather hear a crazy high quote, and go somewhere else. Less time and stress involved.
Most of those saying it is somehow the equivalent of fraud to give a likely problem-customer a high quote have likely never been in a position to provide such a quote to a prospective customer. Nothing unethical about this practice. You charge people based on the time, money, and frustration that a given job will likely result in. Once you've been up and running for a while, you definitely develop a feel for who is going to suck up huge amounts of your time or not pay. This is taken into account in the initial quote and why shouldn't it be. Time is time, whether you're turning wrenches or attempting to secure payment for services rendered/work around the owner's previous hack-repairs. While it is likely that a high quote will simply drive them away to a new shop, which is really the idea here, I always quote high enough that if they do decide to use me, the extra is enough for me to justify the likely extra hassle/risk. If you don't like it, go somewhere else!
Yeah. I need one near me. I moved 30 miles from where I was living and had a fantastic mechanic who may have been worthy of a wizard title. I mean... as far as I'm concerned anyone who can change a starter on a Panther body from the early 2000s on is doing some kind of magic... there's three bolts. YOu can see one. If you reach hard you can touch a second one... where's the third? I don't know. It's in some other dimension tucked away behind the frame or something. You have to either be a wizard or you have to perform blood sacrifice (and pull the engine out) to reach the last one.

I was absolutely furious. I immediately drove back to this shop and as I walked into the garage I could see plain as day the mechanic who worked on my car had my stainless steel frames leaning up against his lunchbox on his workbench, ready to take them home. I asked what the heck he thought he was doing stealing my license plate frames and he cooly said that since I did not check a box on the paperwork as I was dropping off the vehicle that asked if I wanted my license plate frames replaced with their cheap plastic frames with their shop name on them he checked it as saying yes. I was so mad I walked right across the garage and grabbed my stainless-steel frames off his workbench and walked out without saying a word. Needless to say, I never went back to this shop again.
A coworker of mine husband is a retired Master Technician. To keep busy he repairs 'HOOPTIE" cars. Vehicles that low income people and elderly people depend on but can't afford to get repaired at a shop or dealership. Like you he said 95% of people are grateful and pay. But because he has been burned by the other 5% he now makes people buy all the parts themselves before he will work on their cars.
It's the only way to not get screwed on business. Or at least 50% money down on an estimate. If they can't pay within days, they can't pay down the road. It will usually send the worst roaches gunning for another shop to F over.

You’re a stand up guy Wizard. There’s a mechanic I use who has integrity like you and it he’s booked for weeks out. I wouldn’t worry about that person telling his acquaintances, if they’re anything like him you don’t want their business.
I feel you Car Wizard. I used to run a gardening business and I had to fire several clients for almost the exact same reason as you. One particular example is when I used to mow a lady's lawn for a price that she would agree to in writing via email only to dispute the price when the work was done and it came time to pay the bill. The last time I did work for her, she asked me to mow her lawn for the usual agreed price and also to weed a huge and overgrown garden bed. I advised her in writing that I would be charging her an extra $120 to weed the garden bed which she agreed to pay. On the day I did the work it was a very hot summer's day, and when I had finished and knocked on her door to take payment her and her husband refused to pay anything because they thought it was too expensive. Fortunately for me I had a printed copy of the email exchange where I listed the total price, and where they accepted and agreed to pay that price. When I showed them this, the husband simply said that they had changed their mind and didn't want to pay that price or any price for the work I had completed. I reminded them as per my conditions of service that if full payment wasn't made I'd be referring the bill to a debt collector. The husband then told me that I needed to move my vehicle out of the driveway so that he could get his car out of the garage to go to work, and that if I didn't move immediately he'd call the police and have me charged with harrassment. I told him I'd be happy for him to call the police, but a better solution would be for him and his wife to pay me there and then what was owed and then I'd happily move my vehicle out of the way. The husband very begrudgingly paid me what was owed in cash, and I was quickly on my way. After this experience I didn't accept any more work from this client and told everyone in the gardening business in my area to be aware of what these people were like. Months later for 2 weeks straight I had emails, phone calls and voice messages from this couple begging me to do work for them because everyone else was too expensive. I ignored them and never looked back. Lesson learned: Don't accept clients/customers if they treat you with disrespect and don't agree to pay the bill when it's due.
I worked for a couple of dealers in the hood, and these kind of rolling turds came in each day and our back lot was littered with them. We learned to collect the $100 diagnosis up front.
Yes it is! Helped a friend replace a timing belt on a Honda Accord... I'll never do another one. Not because it was difficult to do (kinda was for a first timer), or because of money, it was just time consuming. If I were a certified mechanic, I would have definitely charged at least that.
Yes it it, I don't do timing. I'll do brakes, power steering, tune ups but when it comes to crap like the timing chain/belt or water pump, I hire it out. Usually it costs me around $1,400 to 1,500 depending on the vehicle.

Should Stewie Griffened his ass.

@jblyon2 Why?
I don’t remember specifics about this, but my ex worked in a computer shop. One day he came across kiddy porn. Standard procedure is to call the police, and they emptied out the entire shop.

Some customers think they're always right. My first boss told me something that has stuck with me ever since. "Some customers just arn't worth wasting time on, you can't make every single customer happy". If you have a hunch you're dealing with a difficult customer, quote them double and let them walk away
Biff . He is right
@biff s it s called pricing yourself out of a job to avoid it. what you re suggesting is taking the job and defrauding the customer. that s a very different concept.
biff s Nah man, claiming you did the work already is even worse.
Quote them double?

I do computer repair as side jobs(does not pay enough these days living in the rural south to make it a full time gig), you get those few who think you can make gold out of 20 year old junk for next to nothing, because they are too cheap to even buy a $150 Chromebook, or go on eBay, and pick up an education surplus Lenovo Thinkpad for $80 in good condition.
Next on Hoovie....”I lost the cheapest Mazda in America to the Car Wizard”
Why are they garbage? They were nice cars when new and still look relevant and classy.
He’s right, those Mazda’s of those years were pretty unreliable. Friend used to have one years back and it was always in the shop. Quality is better these days though
Yeah back then it was Toyota, Nissan or Honda. Mazda was like the RC-Cola was to Coke and Pepsi. A distant imitation.
The classic deadbeat line: Do you take payments?
Or we should have a mechanic that sets up unlimited repairs for a monthly payment like Netflix. Imagine a Netflix style mechanic.

Customers have the right to fire mechanics too. A number of years ago I brought my 280ZX to a specialty auto shop for some work. When I went and picked up my vehicle I paid and did not notice until I got home that this shop had taken off my expensive solid stainless steel license plate frames and replaced them with their cheap plastic frames with their shop name on them.
Register it to your shop and use it as a loaner car for your good customers who might need a car 🚗.

I'm an electrician, I've been through a few scenarios like this over the years, electricans can't put a lean on some guys house, gotta take them to court. 9 times out of 10 it's not worth it. Gets worse when you work for a builder and the owner doesn't pay them for building work, not your fault but it becomes your problem....
Can't put a lien if you didn't pull a permit. Always pull a permit.
@@snackler6102 RUclips search "tony seba robin hood conference" and watch that presentation to see why it's wise to take a second look at the electrician thing -- although HVAC tech and plumber are also solid picks.
There's a large builder , i won't say the name, they specialize in not paying people and then sue. They tie you up in court till you can't afford to go on... Very common business practice. Owners aren't the only bad actors. But i feel what you're saying, lots of people suck.
All of the outdoor construction business is like that. Now work in the bus of being payed up front or by credit company.
You’re a stand up guy Wizard. There’s a mechanic I use who has integrity like you and it he’s booked for weeks out. I wouldn’t worry about that person telling his acquaintances, if they’re anything like him you don’t want their business.
"Went smooth off". I've never loved a phrase as much as I love this phrase that I just learned.
Good plan

Timing belt plus everything else under a grand is a great price.

@@toysoldier46552 Just had the timing belt/water pump done on my Volvo C70 convertible and it was $700. If I ever got a ~$1,500 quote for that type of job I'd throw the whole car away and buy a new one lol.
