- The press launch for the 2020 Honda #CBR1000RR-R SP #Fireblade took place on the Grand Prix circuit in Qatar but what are the SP and the stock bike like on the UK roads, UK track and on the #dyno too?
Seasoned road tester and regular contributor, Adam 'Chad' Child, joins our own Web Editor, Michael Mann, swapping between both bikes on the UK's roads while 2020 British Superstock vice-champion, Tom Neave, helps out at Cadwell Park.
But what does the bike make on the dyno? The claim is 214.56bhp, can it get close?
The full and comprehensive details are within the original launch report, right here: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial...
**At 13m20s, of course the caption is meant to read '199.76'**

Sort the typo out! The max power is 199.76 BHP NOT 119.76 BHP as stated on the screen.
That was a really solid, comprehensive review.
It was good to have the standard bike in there as up to this point I'd only seen the SP talked about
I have to say this is one of, if not the best, reviews I've seen for this bike
You've done a great job at paying attention to some details no one has even remotely talked about
Best regards to both Michael and Adam
Thanks for taking the time to say so, CIPHER.
Cheers, Michael
Great episode, it’s the first time I have seen a bike on a dyno
One of the very best technical reviews.
Great video. Especially the in depth analysis at the end. Good stuff. More like this please.
Great review, the best on the internet so far and awesome bike! Honda really nailed it! ❤
Thanks for the comment, really appreciated!
Cheers, Michael
Really good in depth review!
Great job on the video! From the videography, editing, test riders and all else. Very well put together video.
Thanks very much, appreciate the positive comment and I’m glad you enjoyed! Cheers, Michael
S1000rr was putting 198 to the wheel 5 years ago. You can buy one for 8 grand with brembos and active suspension. It also makes big power and torque all through the Rev range
Well said👍
Except a stock S1000RR was NOT putting 198 to the wheels 5 years ago.
@@RCFourFive true
Who even needs 198? Who even needs 150? Honda messed up by not focusing on rider comfort and daily rideability. Still a cool bike though.

Great review, thanks.

Great track bikes but absolute shite for the road, the complete opposite of all previous Blades which were legendary road bikes and flattered even a moderate riders skills, these Blades rarely get out of second on the road and are gutless below 8,000rpm. it's scandalous that a £20,000 bike (non SP) doesn't have a quickshifter/auto blipper as standard when £8 to 9,000 bikes (the KTM 790 Duke and Street Triple R) have them as standard.
Fair points but I believe the standard machine is there as a base for race teams who'll simply replace brakes, suspension and electronics as soon as they lay their hands on the bike. Honda made no secret about their desire to win races so effectively you have base level bike for race teams to tinker with and the SP, with all its high end components, is aimed at the road riders who'll enjoy them.
Cheers for the comment, Michael
@@bennettsbikesocial you are Right Sir👍
@@bennettsbikesocial I understand Hondas desire to win WSBK etc but they've alienated many Blade owners who were about to change to a new model expecting the updated version of the old rider friendly bike ,so why not the balls out SP and a more road friendly model.

@@bennettsbikesocial has it won in BSB? it hasn't won in Wsbk
Had one (black sp rrr with carbon kit - yes you can get the black one as an sp) and did 500 miles on it. Rather hard on my wrists. I’m too tall for it. Also went through a recall. Great bike but the gearing is really not suitable for the road. I also bought an akraprovic can for it and it didn’t work properly as they hadn’t sorted out the servo plate properly for it at the time so it had to go back to cal sports and they luckily refunded me at the time. I wouldn’t say it was a great experience for me overall to be honest.
I have to say Adam child always gives great analysis. Top bloke.
damn, that sucks.
Brilliant review, cheers!
You’re welcome, Jason. Thanks for the comment. Michael
You guys put out some great content! Seeing a pro use the bike the way it was intended is fantastic. I really am interested in this bike, all of the flaws people mention are things I like, I like a difficult bike to ride, one that has quirks and character!
Thanks very much. It was a shame I was nursing a semi-fixed fractured collarbone (especially on such a physically demanding circuit) but even if 100% fit, there was no way I was getting close to Tom on track - he's a real talent and was just waiting for me in the shots where you see me overtake!!!
Cheers, Michael
@@bennettsbikesocial sorry to hear about the injury man, I am really interested in this bike for all the quirks you guys mentioned! Heal up quick and get back to ripping out there!
For the guys saying it's too expensive you are correct and Honda doesn't care if you don't buy them. Their money is made in the Asian market selling little commuter bikes .. Honda's sole purpose for this is too win races to increase their exposure and popularity in Asia. The western market for Honda is like 7% of total sales . It's a shame because I would love to buy it 🙁☹️
In the beginning of the video you asked the guy with nissin sponsorship on his jacket about the difference between Brembo and Nissin, no surprise to me you got no answer :)
Why was it a surprise that there was QS settings? Bloody previous model SP/SP2 had similar QS options.
And lets be fair, the base RR-R suspension can be adjusted - you just need to do it manually on the fork tops.
The claimed is at the crank. Measuring at the wheel. I thought by now you guys would know this.
The certified claimed is 215bhp so 199rwhp is pretty accurate.
Very very good mr michael
Really good review this one. Some of the other reviews (In the UK) have been a bit hit and miss but this is very comprehensive. Now it has been out nearly 2 years they've dropped in price considerably. Having always owned BMW RRs i (Gen 3 and 4) i can agree with the comments. I also feel the latest Gen 4 missing a lot of quality compared to the previous gen and its competition. Also to get it where i want on track it still needs money spent on it. Where the Honda i feel is just perfect out the box, track bike first ride bike second. I need to test one!
😎 Best review!!👍🏻 Just got to sell everything not nailed down to buy one 😆
Did this gentleman say he'd never ridden a road bike in his life? 😯
I don't know why but I love honda as a brand
Honda claim peak power at 14,500, you hit the limiter at 14,000. You can see from the graph power is still rising. I think you are hitting some speed limit even in 4th gear. You should rerun the dyno results.
It wouldnt make any more in 5th or 6th
The bike reminds me of the Honda s2000. Tame and confident at low speed road driving. Sporty enough where you feel bumps etc, but turn it up, spin the motor and the car changes personality.
Except the S2000 was still slow regardless of how you drove it. I know, I owned one.
This is a awesome new bike from Honda
Agreed. It's a huge step forwards from anything they've created before.
Cheers, Michael
Very nice !
People complained about the blade being down on power.. For years. Now they're at competitive figures people are now complaining their not going to be a good road bike ffs 😂😂😂 make you're minds up lads
The last gen semi-actives was way too progressive in track mode for the track. My SP2 needed a proper suspension tune in manual mode to make it able to handle being ridden hard. Have bottomed the first gen out, one too many times, how is the 2nd gen in comparison?
Big Thumbs up for this bike. If possible please do a quarter mile drag race between this And Bmw S 1000 RR.
it's not claimed, it's measured at the CRANKSHAFT. Only losing 15HP from crank to wheel is incredibly good. a 7% drivetrain loss is incredibly good, especially considering the typical loss is 15-20%.
thank you for the most perfect reply/comment - No-one else seems to understand this - I have an black -21 RR-R 🙂
thank you for the most perfect reply/comment - No-one else seems to understand this - I have an black -21 RR-R 🙂
Your review is interesting because we (regular riders) watch & read how the blade is kinda gutless down low. I was wondering if that's due to them short shifting, when they could stay in 1st gear. Seems to b the case. I'll have to see when I can test one for myself.
100 mph first gear! Dont as me how I know..
Ok, I won’t as you

I don't get that the super stock rider was saying you get what you get with the standard suspension. Surely it is manually adjustable for preload , rebound and compression. You can see that it is later in the video.. Was there not a screwdriver in the tool kit.?
I think he means once you set it you get that consistent performance whereas with the electronic you can change strings on the fly or have it in adaptive mode.
Reviews on this bike are so inconsistant....1min its too peaky and long geared. Next min its loud and aggressive and brilliant...then its pointless and expensive and just track focussed....then its really good again....just dont know what to think without riding it
What more of an excuse do you need :D
I agree but I’ve had a Fireblade before and it was to small for me, pegs sat to high and I never felt comfortable as I did on my Suzuki. But one thing you cannot deny is the Honda always looks fantastic therefore I’m always in a quandary with it, I love it but it doesn’t suit me for riding.
It just goes to show you that the only opinion that matters, when deciding if a bike a great or not, is your own. I've heard the swing about this bike the love or hate it, I think this bike is what the 1199 was a few years ago, you either loved it or hated it because of the twitchy peaky characteristics. Honestly I dig this bike (minus the key fob thing, wish they made a special place for it under the seat cowling) it was made so race teams had an amazing blank slate to work with. I want one!

@@mikeharrison72 oh no way, thank you! I hope you enjoy, if you ever have suggestions I'm always open to hear them!
Thats great WHP but how? Are these motorcycles re mapped? The fireblade and infant most Japanese motorcycles have much lower whp as stock, right? Even dyno runs done by other had much lower figures. Eg BrenTuning
Bren is USA - USA bikes had 186 bhp
Wow the sp model here in America is about $29,500 dollars and very limited, I’m a Mark Marques fan, I would love to own one, but for that price I can buy a nice used convertible sports car
Always amazes me how many racers don’t ride road bikes at all.
XD working in a cake shop tends to make you want to spent time away from cake.
20k bike and quickshifter is optional? Honda is going mad. Anyone knows if there is a fireblade coming out under 20k maybe the RR only
Garbage road bike.
@@robertprosser6856 So you mean everything a proper superbike should be? I thought these are "Race Replica's". Folks don't know what they want these days apparently.
@@d1sturb3d119 there are much better options for sportbikes being used on the roads like the previous fireblades.
@@robertprosser6856 Sportbikes are supposed to be replicas of their racing counterparts. If you want a road bike, why would you be commenting on this?
Buy a GS and go talk about how great that is then.. This is a +20K competitive track machine and the price tag alone makes that plenty clear.
And yet someone will always come along and spout that it is not good enough for a completely different use.
Are you going to comment on a house listing next and claim that wouldn't be great for your outdoor lifestyle? Smh..
@@d1sturb3d119 who said I want a road bike? I own sport bikes that I use only on the road. Let me spell it out. There are much better sport bikes for use on the road which have better engines for road use than the gutless one in the new fireblade that needs thrashing as it has no bottom end or midrange torque along with the new Kawasaki ZX10R. The Fireblade and ZX10R are extremely uncomfortable. The BMW S1000RR and GSXR1000 are much more suited to use on the road with much more comfort and room and both their engines give plenty of bottom and midrange power for easier riding on the road. Can't put it any better.
Standard more greget🔥
Are all six gears used during dyno runs?
Good question but many bikes, including the Fireblade, have a limiter in 6th and therefore the dyno tester will usually use 5th or even 4th (depending on the capacity and no. of cylinders) to give a better/more accurate reading.
Cheers, Michael
It's a nice looking bike but a bit irrelevant for anyone outside of a race team. Not really anything new as Honda were doing this 30 years ago with the RC30. Massively expensive, mainly sold to race teams etc. If you don't want to pay big money for a 200 bhp track bike, buy a CBR650. By the way, I find it amusing that my bike is flat out in 6th gear well before a CBRRRR pilot is even considering changing into 2nd!
13:20 Claimed 214BHP
Measured 119BHP
Bikes running on 2cil or what😅
Dyno gives a WHP reading not crank HP. 199 WHP would normally indicate 220+ at the crank so manufacturers claim is conservative.
Also wheel speed sensors hamper dyno runs on the old 2019 blade - not sure if that’s the case on this or it was taken care of.
@@RUNDMC1 It as a joke because the screen said 119 and not 199 as the dyno was reading😁
Great spot... and of course it's a typo. It should be '199.76' as the chart in the back of shot reads. Sorry about the boo-boo.
Cheers, Michael

@@bennettsbikesocial this is rear whell hp or hp at crank ?!
Sorry but the 'you can't change the suspension' thing is CRAP ! the standard model still has pre-load, compression & rebound !! FFS. the difference is the RRRRRRRSP has ELECTRONIC adjustment just get a bloody spanner & screwdriver and bang there you go - also stock non electronic / non active is usually more consistent - why are people unable to turn a screwdriver ?
I also found that strange that they say they cant change the suspension. It has just as much adjustment, just manual.
Exactly the comment I was looking for. In fact, I'm pretty sure the bike he races uses manually adjustable suspension, not electronic/active.
Yeah, I was going to make this comment. You'd expect the Ohlins gear to be better, and maybe even to have a wider range of adjustment as well as just the ease of adjustment that the electronics allow (although that's just rebound and compression, preload is still manual). But from the description you'd think the Showa stuff wasn't adjustable at all.
He was commenting on the ease of which changing the SP's settings can be achieved while riding and the differences it makes. Perhaps his comments were taken out of context.

@@bennettsbikesocial yeah amazing bike.
@@bennettsbikesocial How's the heat management due to the added power?
@Miran Kajtna it will do 183 Mph in 4th gear gps as tested by Mcn Performance tester bruce dunn using very accurate 2D data recording gps device. And it will max out at exactly 186 mph in 5 th gear. The speedo reaches 186 quickly. But few tenths of a second later The Gps speed also max out at restricted 186 mph. But it is very very impressive because it is nearly reaches 186 mph in 4 the gear in gps also. The other magazine also tested with gps device and it reached around 182 in 4th gps. I guess, torquewise a Yamaha R1M is the much better choice on the road ?!
Tweaking hydraulics is all well and good but it's worth nought if you don't set sag (preload) correctly for the type of riding you are doing. This can only be done manually. For a fundamentally correct setup, correct preload is critical. This reduces the benefit of elec suspension. No point pushing buttons for compression if your preload is wrong for your weight and riding ability. I'll take manual suspension every time and use the money saved on track days. But then I would never buy any Blade at this price. Fail Honda.
No. honda have created a beautiful Monster. Thumbs up for this fireblade.
What is not mentioned here is that you set the preload up manually
So it’s basically a 2008 zx10 then 🤣

This bike is heavily restricted to 186 mph. If unrestricted it will easily reach around 340 kmh or around 211 mph. Thumbs up for this Awsome detailed video Bennetts bike. I just loved it.
No, it won't. Not enough power for such tall gearing.
@@Jose.LQ6 it will, it can Do that speed if completely unrestricted. And 200 bhp real wheel horsepower is enough to propel this beast to a 340 Kmh if completely unrestricted.
@@wanderer54796 now that you mention it, this should be roughly equivalent to a v4r so 340 seems possible, but definetly needs a sprocket change because its gearing is too damn tall.
