Man, you deserve more recognition. These are some of the most professional builds and videos I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. please keep em coming! cheers from Canada, eh
Very nicely done! Simple and straight forward. I just finished a Bandai Snow Speeder and now I've got the bug. I ordered this kit today along with the nippers and weathering wash. Thanks for showing how to do a great job.
A quick note of the Vallejo Primer: I've used this stuff extensively, both for model kits and for miniatures, which has given me some familiarity with it. If you wait roughly 24 hours (give or take) for it to cure completely, it can be sanded; the key though is that curing time. If you try to sand it before that, yeah, it tends to peel off in strips and chunks. Its nice if you have the time to let it cure thoroughly, but if its a project you want to get to right away it can be a bit of a pain. Also, something else that should be said about this stuff; in most Vallejo paints people tend to put some sort of non-metal bead in for an agitator which is usually fine, except apparently with the primer. There's another channel I'm subscribed to, Dr Faust's Painting Clinic, where in a video he shows that somehow even a glass bead managed to cause some sort of corrosion, contaminating his white surface primer in the process. I've no idea how it manages to do this, but just a heads up for anyone thinking about adding some sort of agitator to the Vallejo Surface Primer.
Thanks for the info! I might give the Vallejo primer another try, but I'm really happy with how the Tamiya Surface Primer performs for the moment, even if it is a bit more expensive.
I just got this and i really can't wait to get started, just gotta wait for the paints to arrive. Gonna be using your video for references on some painting techniques! Looking awesome!
These are great models, I recommend the Snow Speeder too. I've not started mine yet but the detail looks incredible. I can't make the Revell kits now, Bandai's are so much better.
On the issue with scale of the pilot figure: Bandai likely scaled the pilot to the current official canon measurements of the A-Wing starfighter, which has a length of 9.6 meters. The official sizes of Star Wars ships were not firmly established until West End Games started making the Star Wars role playing game, starting in 1987. Some of the sizes WEG established don't exactly square with the studio models, but they are what has become canon (with one notable exception being the Super Star Destroyer, which WEG pegged at 5km long, but has more recently been re-revised to being 19km long, due to the fact that it's gargantuan screen presence in ESB puts it well beyond 5km in length if measured against the established 1.6km length of the regular Imperial Star Destroyer).
krashkow The real problem is that the official size is wrong. Even if you ignore pilot size its size relative to other ships in RotJ puts it at 15 feet long.
Great build. You make it look so easy. I think I missed the grey you used for the tower? Is it just a stock medium grey? IIRC you used Ghost Grey as the shadow colour on your Death Star models, but it was a lot smaller. Also, did you use White Grey as the base white for all your Bandai Star Wars fliers? (Star Destroyer, Snowspeeder, Falcon, Slave-I) Keep up the good work!
Great job great kit ...also liked that micro machine range too. I weathered mine back in the day ..bandai are the best starwars kits by a mile ....nice one
I just bought one of these ditties today. I can't believe I found one being sold in the States! I thought they were only being sold in Japan, and you had to import them.
Enjoyed the video and the build. As far as the issue of scale is concerned for the pilot, of course, I can no longer remember the source, but I heard an interview with, I think Adam Savage, where he said the photographic model was built with an oversized pilot figure to make it more noticeable for photographic purposes. The pilot in the filming model was not to scale with the ship.
Chili..Is there anyway that You could show all the paints and weathering products that You used at the end of the video. I noticed that You did that with the Republic Star Destroyer video. It helps Us novices in choosing paint schemes and such. I try to match up the same paints that You used. I find Myself with pen and paper taking notes throughout the video. But a nice recap of products used at the end would be very helpful. Just an idea for future videos.
Thanks for the feedback! Yes I've been playing around with different ways to show this, like in the TIE Striker video where I showed them at the start. The trouble is I don't always know what I'll use and not use, I'm not very good at planning lol. I'll keep doing an overview at the end, my fear is that a lot of people may have dropped out by then, ah well then they miss out. :)
ModelChili Scale Models you can always keep track of what you use and when you upload the video you can list it in the description? I've been wondering also
@@modelchili you could also just make a statement to the fact that you will list all additional paints and materials used at the end of the video and if need be as you point to the paint you can even flash to where the colour is. Have you ever thought of doing some 101 quick videos? how to black wash your model to be successful? start with a ship that is already painted to that stage and seal it wash it then remove excess then reseal it with the dull coat kind of thing. Also I realize you work with airbrushed mostly but do you have tips for those of us relegated to brush (and summer aerosol outdoor spraying) due to wives not liking airbrush smell and compressor noise?
Another awesome job my friend, I will have to get this kit it will look good next to the Y-Wing. Is it just me or does the bast and tower look like it would be perfect with the 1/350 scale Falcon.
This is a really lovely video. Nice and relaxed, shows off your process very well. Loved seeing it all come together at the end. Have you considered adding a slight bit of weathering to the turbolaser tower? At the risk of detracting from the A-wing itself, the tower paintjob looks a little flat right now. Mostly because it's right next to that exquisite paint job on the starfighter. Definitely going to check out more of your videos. Very soothing stuff.
Thanks, really appreciate it. :) Yes the simple tower is intentional, like you say it probably would detract from the A-Wing and I just treated it like a stand really. If I had a diorama in mind I probably would have detailed it a bit more.
Another great video Thanks! this is my next Bandi Star Wars build. Very impressed you still had that issue of Starlog magazine for reference. Thanks again and keep them coming!
Thanks for this guide! You've helped me with a number of the models I built, including this one. Did you catch the easter egg Bandi included in the base stand for this model? It has the back section of the X-Wing molded in to it. You can see it at 15:58, in the upper quadrant, to the right of the dividing line. Thanks for your wonderful videos.
I look at the A-wing and all I can think is "this was built from an F-14 model kit!" Seriously, the body of the A-wing is LITERALLY the middle section of an F-14! It's the forward half of the glove area that contained the F-14's variable sweep wings. The front prongs of the A-wing are crafted from the top of the F-14's engine inlets, too.
Thanks! Yeah, anything that gives it a gloss coat will make it easier to use oils and paints for weathering. Don't forget to finish it off with a flat coat. :)
hi, great build chilli, mines on the bench as we speak tho I've chosen to do it as a green squadron bird, all we need now is the b wing, keep on keepin on, tim the primered thumb
Really awesome work! Thanks so much, great tips! I just saw they're releasing a 1/144 of this kit soon, I'm gonna hold out for it coz I love the tiny models :)
It's weird... We see the A-wings in the movies and you can clearly see the pilot can barely even fit in the cockpit yet the official stats and numbers makes it a little bigger
Really great video, thank you for sharing. I would appreciate your advice, I've been trying to prime my white pieces in Stynylrez gray, and then paint them with Vallejo's model air white. How did you get your coat so nice and clean? I keep having gray patches in mine, and I'm worried I'll overspray and end up ruining the panel lines and rivets. would appreciate any help you can offer!
I've always found Model Air White to be a bit tricky, it's quite thin and you need to take a lot of care when spraying. For the A-Wing I actually used Model Air White Grey, which is a lot more forgiving.
i'm having issues with the "U" shaped piece of plastic that forms part of the canopy that goes just behind the back of the head of the pilot figure, did you have to trim it to make it fit? you didn't show that piece in your video.
Awesome, glad you're finding it helpful! Yeah definitely give it a try, and don't be afraid to experiment and make mistakes, I have a model graveyard full of abandoned kits lol.
I don't believe you covered it in your video but how did you paint or color the clear engine thrusters that are inside the two thruster assemblies? Thanks!
Hey ModelChili, using your video as a guide to paint my A-Wing. You know how this kit has a nasty gate mark right on the side of the canopy? I sanded the area down and polished it back to clear sheen. Weeks later, though, that portion of the canopy got cloudy. How did you prevent this from happening with yours? I'm thinking a clear coat on the canopy will help?
Yeah, will try to get it polished and clear again, and then lay a clear top coat on top, to prevent the plastic from "oxidizing" / getting fuzzy again. Hopefully that'll do it. Thanks and keep up the great vids. I was looking to build a Space Battleship Yamato as well, looking forward to checking your build out.
I bought Vallejo Model Air White Grey because I wanted to try it out after seeing it on this video. I sprayed it down just as you did, but I got horrible orange peel. However, after about 12 hours the orange peel smoothed out to a good coat. But then when I put the second coat on, I got orange peel again, but it didn't smooth out as nicely. Did your paint go down smooth? Maybe I have a bad batch?
Hmm I've never had that happen with my Vallejo paints. I sometimes get it when spraying too much clear coat from the Tamiya spray cans. Maybe you put a bit too much paint on in one go?
+ModelChili Scale Models On to a star wars model primed with black Stynylrez Other Model Air paints spray fine, but for some reason the White Grey goes down awful. But in your video the finish looks smooth.
Yeah, I've used the same colour on the Y-Wing, Slave 1 and Falcon kits and it all went down fine. It's a shame you seem to be having bad luck with it! I've found that problems can be really tricky to pin down, there's so many factors that could influence the result, and as you say, it might just be a bad batch.
Chili! I finished painting and have just put on the gloss clear coat! I have a question about the wash. When you put the wash on the A-Wing did you let it air dry or did you use a paper towel?
Awesome! With the Vallejo washes I always let them dry enough so handling them doesn't smudge it up. Then I use water or a bit of acrylic thinner to wipe it down. I imagine enamel based washes would be a bit different.
Do you think the laser turret is 1/72 scale? Looks smaller maybe 1/144, but I'm not sure. Any plans to do a 1/72 scale trench run diorama? That would be a REALLY cool video!!!
They have a 1/144 scale trench diorama out now. Just a shout-out if you want to avoid doing some extra work. Really, the 1/144 scale is probably the way to go for space and cost considerations. They're selling up to three TIE's (Vader plus two wingmen) in a kit and Y-wings and X-wings in pairs in some cases I believe. The space those 1/72 kits are going take up builds up quickly. The 1/144aren't as nice close up but from a distance they can still come off well if you're careful with the painting.
I Love Bandai Kits doing the A-wing as I watch yours.. will nt be using the Tower b/c its out of scale... will use it for 1/144 (Bandai) X-Wing trench run perfect scale! Your stuff is great however
I just posted a video of my A-Wing pretty much finished I still haven't applied the wash but it looks damn good! Let me know what you think the video is on my profile!
your right the A wing pilot looks too small for the A wing i think the kenner/hasbro toy is the only toy 1/18 scale starfighter that is scaled to the figure
I always thought the pilot used in the filming miniature was too big. He was in there so tight that it just never looked practical. As it was you never were going to see them on screen, as everything was moving too fast to tell. This scale looks more believable for me.
That Black surface primer you have says 'Negro' on it. What does that actually translate from [only asking because typing negro into Google Translate just detects it as English]?
ModelChili Scale Models Right, thank you. Like I say, only asking because Google Translate wasn't telling me. Always wanted to know where it came from...

lovely.
I just build the awing from revell (not the same but fun too)
Thank for the video!

Stunning work! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much!
Lovely work, as always. Just picked up this kit as I'm itching to build some Star Wars ships, so doing my research now!
I loved stunting in the a - wing and I still do even in Battlefront 2!
Wow. That final product looks amazing. Nice work as always.
Thank you. :)

Great build, well done, that tower looks out of scale though.
It is out of scale. The head alone should be the same size than the ship. If not bigger.
Thanks for the tip on finding the right shade of red.
Thanks for watching!
The A-wing’s size is an ongoing dispute. The official stuff says that it’s significantly larger than the model from the movies
It's weird... We see the A-wings in the movies and you can clearly see the pilot can barely even fit in the cockpit yet the official stats and numbers makes it a little bigger
Yeah, there are a lot of inconsistencies compared to the original scale models, and what the lore says the size should be
Very well done. May I ask which color did you use on the turbo laser turret stand?
Cheers! Vallejo Light Grey then a bit of White Grey over the top.
I ordered a pair of those Tamiya cutter. I got them today and was surprised by how small they are. But, I guess that's the point!
Yeah they're great for getting into tight spaces!
Really great video, thank you for sharing. I would appreciate your advice, I've been trying to prime my white pieces in Stynylrez gray, and then paint them with Vallejo's model air white. i'm having issues with the "U" shaped piece of plastic that forms part of the canopy that goes just behind the back of the head of the pilot figure, did you have to trim it to make it fit? you didn't show that piece in your video.

ModelChili Scale Models Do you have recommendations on what spray gun and other tools to use?
Great work! Question, does the kit come with a landingear?
Thanks! Yep it does. :)
Nice work!!!
Thanks!
I don't believe you covered it in your video but how did you paint or color the clear engine thrusters that are inside the two thruster assemblies? Thanks!
I just brush painted those with Tamiya clear yellow acrylic, they're small enough that the brush strokes don't really show up.
Thanks for the help! Keep posting these awesome videos
No worries. Thanks for watching! :)
Yeah, will try to get it polished and clear again, and then lay a clear top coat on top, to prevent the plastic from "oxidizing" / getting fuzzy again. Hopefully that'll do it.
Thanks and keep up the great vids. I was looking to build a Space Battleship Yamato as well, looking forward to checking your build out.

incredible work! may i ask how long did it take you to complete the A-Wing and Y-Wind?
Thanks! They took about a week each.
Hmm I've never had that happen with my Vallejo paints. I sometimes get it when spraying too much clear coat from the Tamiya spray cans. Maybe you put a bit too much paint on in one go?
+ModelChili Scale Models I doubt it, I sprayed light coats. Maybe the humidity was too high or something.
What sort of surface were you spraying it on? Primer? Straight to plastic?
+ModelChili Scale Models On to a star wars model primed with black Stynylrez Other Model Air paints spray fine, but for some reason the White Grey goes down awful. But in your video the finish looks smooth.
Yeah, I've used the same colour on the Y-Wing, Slave 1 and Falcon kits and it all went down fine. It's a shame you seem to be having bad luck with it! I've found that problems can be really tricky to pin down, there's so many factors that could influence the result, and as you say, it might just be a bad batch.
Very nice.
Thanks!
how did you do the panels?is it solid black or burgandy? what was your method? thanks!
Not quite sure what you're referring to sorry. I painted the parts red and white grey before putting them together, as in the video. :)
+ModelChili Scale Models okay sweet! Thank you
No worries! Hope it goes well. :)
Do you think the laser turret is 1/72 scale? Looks smaller maybe 1/144, but I'm not sure. Any plans to do a 1/72 scale trench run diorama? That would be a REALLY cool video!!!
Yeah the turret is way too small, it was just included to pad out the kit I think.
Nice job...enjoyed your video.
Cheers!
I love the way you do weathering
any chance of you building a Gundam kit some day?
Thanks! Probably not, it's not really something I'm familiar with. Although I don't like to say never. :p
I never knew the technical journal was a magazine. I have owned the hardcover of the technical journal for 20 something years and never knowing that!
Oh yeah I think I remember that. It was all three magazines in one book right?
Hello,
does somebody know the measures of the model a-wing?
Very nice work, the video is quite helpful. However, I can't resist painting mine with blue markings!
Thank you!
Beautiful. 👽👍🏼
Thanks!
What kind of compressor do you use?
I just gotthis kit, very nice, but it doesn't appear to have those clear yellow inserts for the engines.
charcoal59 Yeah I painted those with clear yellow. :)
Is this kit or the resistance kit a better starter? I like both
Tommy Lakasi I haven't built the Resistance X-Wing so can't really say. I'd guess this has fewer parts.
I Love Bandai Kits doing the A-wing as I watch yours.. will nt be using the Tower b/c its out of scale... will use it for 1/144 (Bandai) X-Wing trench run perfect scale! Your stuff is great however
Thanks!
Absolutely pro!!!
¿What videogames do you think we should play if we want enjoy flying star wars models?.
Regards!!!
Cheers! Star Wars Battlefront :)
Brilliant!!!
Thanks!
how did did you paint the afterburns yellow?
I painted them with Tamiya clear yellow before putting them in place. Then just used a brush to paint the glow inside the engine.
Looks like a largish gap on the right side of the kit, is it correctable?
Not sure which gap you're referring to, maybe you're thinking of the torpedo shaft?
The top red panel on the right side looking down, where the red and white meet
Did you prime ALL the white parts or just the main ones?
Yep primed all the main parts, there were a few small bits that I didn't prime.
Do the B-Wing next.

What is the name of the game that comes out at the beginning?
Star Wars Battlefront :)
I just posted a video of my A-Wing pretty much finished I still haven't applied the wash but it looks damn good! Let me know what you think the video is on my profile!
Surely there must be a B Wing?
Not at the moment. We're all waiting for it!
your right the A wing pilot looks too small for the A wing i think the kenner/hasbro toy is the only toy 1/18 scale starfighter that is scaled to the figure
There is a b wing...
I always thought the pilot used in the filming miniature was too big. He was in there so tight that it just never looked practical. As it was you never were going to see them on screen, as everything was moving too fast to tell. This scale looks more believable for me.
there it is! bandai-hobby.net/sw/jp/products/b_wing_starfighter.html
ACHERON=AVERNUS .

That Black surface primer you have says 'Negro' on it. What does that actually translate from [only asking because typing negro into Google Translate just detects it as English]?
GoDoFcRaP42 They're from Spain, so it just means black. :)
ModelChili Scale Models Right, thank you. Like I say, only asking because Google Translate wasn't telling me. Always wanted to know where it came from...
Ha, had that mag too.
They were pretty cool back in the day! Now I just flick through and shake my head at the amount of advertisements lol.

Oh my God! You may be a genius at models, but listening to you is the vocal equivalent of watching paint dry. Jesus, liven up a bit!
A LOT OF RIDICULOUS.
