R and S forms refers to the chirality of the molecule. R= rectus (right handed), S = sinsiter (left handed). R and S are both synthetic when mass produced for supplements. S is a biproduct of the production. Racemic mixtures (50/50, R/S) are then processed to separate the 2 enantiomers. R is the biologically acitve and natrually produced form. For supplements, R and S are both produced synthetically, then separated. S does not stand for synthetic. But it's an easy way to remember, for non chemists.

My heart-felt gratitude for watching this video before I opened my first purchase of ALA (from a reputable Australian brand) only to find that the active ingredients did not state "R" on the ingredient list.
Luckily, I kept the receipt and did not open. So, I ventured onto Amazon to purchase your brand "Nuphoria" only to find that it is completely sold out. There is another brand I will research before I buy. (Jarrow)

Four months after a two month stint in the hospital with covid and a twice collapsed lung I had pain in my heart (or heart area) when I breathed in deeply. The pain wasn't lessening at all with time. My doctor gave me an IV of Alpha Lipoic Acid and I swear to god 90% of the pain was gone by that evening. Then the following week I got another IV and the pain was 99% gone. After the third IV the pain was completely gone and hasn't come back and that was a couple of months ago. I'm a believer. My doctors all believed that I was suffering from nerve damaged from the emergency chest tube that they put between my ribs and that my heart wasn't involved.

I had yet to learn about this! But recently, I read in a doctoral thesis that when you gave alpha lipoic acid (it didn't mention anything about R-, S- or RS ALA) to a group of patients in a dose of 600 mg daily, they recovered within three months from their dilemma. But now that I have listened to this video, I realize how important it is to choose the non-synthetic tablet, which was probably meant in the experiment I referred to above. I have suffered from what I initially called Morton's syndrome, which may actually be neuropathy, although a recent blood test shows that I do not have diabetes. When I thought I had neuropathy, I bought alpha lipoic acid tablets (without an R in front of ALA), and they have made no difference either, which is explained by your explanation. Outstanding presentation and analysis, for which I thank you very much! ❤🙏
PS I saw another article that mentioned that they also tried giving 600 mg of R ALA to patients suffering from Alzheimer's. However, I don't know how the tests turned out, as I didn't get access to the site, which I don't want to pay for (I'm just an ordinary but curious person!) DS

I'm truly happy to help. Now, here are a few things to consider. If you have been using R-ALA with minimal results, then you'll need to complex it with these vitamins B6 (Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate), Benfotiamine(B1) and methylcobalamin (B12). That should make a significant difference. Also, having patience is the key. Nerves are the slowest healing tissues in the body and it can take anywhere from 8 months to 2 years to fully recover. Will R ALA help with back pain caused by spinal stenosis etc.? I've had many injections and an ablation that left a huge dent in my hip area. They said the nerves will grow back but I don't think they have. Why don't doctors ever mention natural supplements like you have? It's always about keeping the patient “sick” and the money made from that. I bought what you suggested for my husband who has post-hermetic neuralgia from shingles. His doctor thought it was cancer! I cannot wait to see how he does. I also ordered him L-lysine, olive leaf extract, Vit B complex, Vit D. It's a horrible pain. I even researched the New England Journal of medicine and they are “ trying” to find a cure for various types of pain. Not one word about anything natural! Somehow I'm not surprised. God bless you and your family! Thank you!

Make sure they take a good look at your spine. Thirty years ago I hit something in a field that sent me off the front of a Banshee topped out, somewhere around 60-70mph. I only remember shifting in to 6th... and then ambulance lights. I broke the face guard on my helmet. I had a concussion, a small chunk of flesh missing from my leg, broken and dislocated collar bone. What I just found out 2 years ago is that I have a spinal compression injury between my shoulder blades. It's really been wreaking havoc on me for the last few years. I have no money or insurance so I can't do anything about it. Had I known about the injury then, or even 5 years ago when I still had insurance, it could have been fixed.

Thank you for your video. I started taking ALA based on another RUclips channel promoting the benefits or ALA, but there was never any mention that there were two types of ALA on the market, R-ALA and S-ALA. So, being naïve, I went out and bought the cheapest version there was which was RS-ALA. I'm finishing up the first bottle now and had ordered another bottle to continue on, thinking that it might take several months to be able to see a difference. Thanks to your video I now know that I have been wasting my money, and I returned the other bottle I had bought too. Now on the hunt for the R-ALA, (Real-Alpha Lipoic Acid).

      Hi Alan Smart,
I'm glad you found our video informative. We do not carry a stand-alone R-ALA supplement. Because, in our vast experience we've found that when a person has moderate to severe PN or if they've had it for longer than 2 years, R-ALA, by itself won't get them across the finish line. So, we created our nerve support formula with the proper amount of R-ALA (600 mg) along with all of the other critical nutrients for the nerves as outlined in clinical studies. You can find our formula, Nuphoria cm gold and its listed ingredients at healmynerves.com/collections/our-products/products/nuphoria-cm-maximum-strength?

    • @NerveDoctors
      @NerveDoctors  Год назад +6

Hi Danuse. I know it's definitely enough to make your head spin. So, your understanding is correct. However, they began to learn through further research that although the 'S' enantiomer stabilized it, it could actually deactivate the activity of the natural 'R' form. Now a molecule of sodium is used to stabilize the the R-ALA. Anytime you see the word stabilized after R-ALA on the ingredient label or if it says Na R-ALA it means it's been stabilized with sodium. Hope this clears it up for you. Blessings.

      🔺REDUCE/REVERSE Diabetes and/or Neuropathy…
🌈 BERBERINE 900-2000 mg split dosage after meals to substitute for metformin*. ALWAYS TAKE w CINNAMON…
I take 300mg benfotiamine and 2000 mg of organic cinnamon 2-3 times daily. Do this for 8 weeks and then reduce to once daily.
If numbers are still high after 2-3 weeks, repeat treatment. My glucose numbers were upper 200s and low 300s. Now my numbers are 65-140. It’s all natural and much healthier without side effects.
Two pure supplements that I take to REVERSE Neuropathy:
      Benfotiamine (B1) 300mg x 3
      R-alpha lipoic acid 300mg x 2
The specific forms given above are most bioavailable so the most effective… other forms are ineffective and interfere with recovery.
R-alpha lipoic acid is the “real“ product. S-alpha lipoic acid is synthetic and not effective. If combined, the synthetic cancels the effects of the real stuff! If no letter is given before the phrase “alpha lipoic acid“ it is synthetic and does not work.
*For those unaware, metformin causes neuropathy.
The difference between berberine and dihydroberberine (DHB) is that DHB is absorbed at five times the rate of regular berberine. However, it is quite costly, but your DHB intake can be 1/5-1/6 of your regular berberine intake. DHB is very hard to get and may not be available in doses to be taken 2-3 times daily.
After much research and comparison for purity of product without unneeded or unwanted ingredients, I recommend the following from Amazon… Order using subscriptions so you receive discounts when ordering items in the same month.
      a.co/d/iyRnxKd
      Berberine
      a.co/d/cX6Rk1Y
      Cinnamon
      a.co/d/ftxKNCR
      R-lipoic acid
      a.co/d/ftxKNCR
      Benfotiamine
However, it would seem that the combination provided by the nerve doctors working synergistically is actually a better deal than separate items.

I think you need to cut down on the carbohydrates. I don't know how to do that on a vegetarian diet. The fish and eggs are good. Butter is good. You can get a glucose meter and follow Dennis Pollock on RUclips. Sometimes the A1c can be inaccurate, too. But with the neuropathy, I'm guessing your glucose and insulin stay too high. I hope that helps. Please only take my information as a direction for your investigations.

Such a great video, doc. Thank you so much for this. One question though, is it true that taking R-ALA can cause severe hair loss? I've read a couple of reviews from people who started to develop severe hair loss around 3 months after they began taking R-ALA.
    Thanks!

    • @NerveDoctors
      @NerveDoctors  2 года назад +28

You're very welcome. R-ALA does not cause hair loss. On the contrary, clinical research has shown that it can slow down a receding hairline and facilitate new hair growth by blocking enzymes that threaten our hair roots in general. Typically, what happens with hair loss is that a person has an underactive thyroid problem that has gone undetected or they are deficient in minerals and trace minerals. Thanks for the great question. Blessings.

Hi Jodi. ABSOLUTELY! We've had peripheral neuropathy patients come to us that had been suffering for 20 years and were able to turn their cases around. Now, given the fact that your mom has had this for 9 years, she will need more in addition to R-ALA. She's going to need Benfotiamine, Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate, Methylcobalamin, Acetyl L Carnitine and L-citrulline. You don't have to buy these separately. You can usually get them in 1 or 2 nerve support formulas. You must make sure, though that they're in the right amounts, otherwise it won't work. Watch my video: The Right Dose. Hi Maria. That's an excellent question. Both of these compounds are excellent but they work slightly different from each other. R-ALA is an antioxidant, a free radical scavenger that repairs oxidative damage. So, this is very important for nerve degeneration. While, R-Lipoic acid serves as a cofactor for the mitochondria. So, in essence, it helps with mitochondrial health. If you're suffering from PN, I would recommend using the R-ALA form. Hope this helps. Blessings.

So, what happens with the synthetic 'S' version is that it deactivates certain enzymes in most people that prevent the ALA or even R-ALA (in the case of the racemic mixture) from being effectively utilized by the cells. There is a small percentage of the population that this will not effect, albeit small. Fortunately, you fall into that small percentage, which is great. Hi Norman. Yes, this is the correct one. Previously companies were displaying R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (stabilized) which is the same as NA R-ALA. R-Alpha Lipoic Acid must be stabilized for absorption into the cells and to prevent degradation in the GI track. In order to stabilize it to maximize cellular absorption, a molecule known as sodium is used. More companies are now displaying this to show the sodium molecule (NA+). Whether it says stabilized or NA R-ALA they are both the same. Thanks for this great question.

With a balanced, high quality diet, reducing the intake of carcenogenic foods (bacon and other red meats, alcohol etc, and refined sugar) you don't need supplements. The body is great at providing everything you need to be safe and healthy, as long as you put good stuff in.

That's right. The fact this doctor never named the foods high in ALA to get it naturally, speaks volumes.

Which foods contain this R-lipoic acid?

I am currently taking an R-Alpha Lipoic Acid based on your video. However, I only took 240mg and it gave me a slight headache and made me feel dizzy the rest of the day. It is a product I ordered online. Any ideas on why I had such a strange reaction?

Yes, - yes I had the same / simmilar reaction too? What personally I don't know, is that the reaction of the A L A , or is it something else? Nothig major, but it's unpleasant.

I don't know if this is the best, but it is labeled at Life Extension. I have decided to divide the 240 mg capsule into three doses. I hope this helps.@@ramona7160

I’m ordering the stuff she recommends in the link next week as I have pretty bad Sciatica which has been keeping me up at night too. BTW you might also want to check out MSM, Turmeric and Magnesium. Good luck!
