- I've wanted to make a video for a long time talking about my experiences in vanilla WoW grinding it out for rank 14. Getting Grand Marshal, felt great. The grind, didn't.

I really liked your retrospective here brother! It was cool to hear what things were like ranking back in 05’. I didn’t rank myself back in the day because I didn’t play enough, but my dad who had a flexible schedule was able to rank to 14 with a lock. He was doing AV almost exclusively on the Gurubashi PvP server from what I remember.

Miss these times. Got up to Knight Lieutenant on my Hunter back in Vanilla. Had a family vacation one well and felt like I lost so much progress that I didn’t care about HK farming anymore.
Great recount. You got there about 8 months before me, so quite a different experience. (We queued in Ironforge, and didn't have hour long queue times) I started WoW in May 2005 hit 60 October. I remember seeing the Firld Marshals Spawnz and Rabadisto queuing in Ashenvale. So I was not long level 60 when you hit rank 14.
I was Rank 10 mid March 2006. It was at rank 10 I got noticed and invited to the marshal raid, and decided to go for it. I was rank 14 mid June 2006. 3 months from 10 to 14. I finished on 52k honourable kills. Went from 52 days played (rank 10) to 92 days played (rank 14) which was an average of about 10 hours per day including days off (it sounds a lot, and it is, but I had just turned 21 back then and had time.) - our marshal raid meant we weren't allowed to steam off ahead. We had targets to hit and once we hit them we couldn't continue farming honour that week, or it messed with everyone else, this occasionally resulted in me reaching my weekly honour target and having to take a day or 2 off. The inaccuracies did lead to some arguments when people got more than they were meant to.
I got rank 14 around the time they released those 'new' weapons. (think they were reskins)... I contacted a GM who said retain rank 14 for another week, they'll be released next week. They weren't. So that soured the whole experience a bit as I held the Hunter that followed me back from reaching rank 14 for an extra week and missed out on those weapons in the end anyway. Which came out a few weeks later.
I knew guys who had 100k kills and hadn't hit rank 14. There was a rank 12 not in our marshal raid, competing with us solo, who had 65k kills.
We did WSG and AB exclusively. We never lost. We sent a scout in WSG first to check if it was the warlord raid. If it was we abandoned because matches could last hours.

@@ryuno2097 Yes. We had to. If we came up against the warlord raid, matches would last too long and remember, your opponent is actually your own faction, you're in competition with them for honour, not the other faction.
We played against the warlord raid sometimes and matches on WSG could go on and on as each team refused to give up the flag, hiding their flag carrier and defending him. We'd reach a stalemate. Meanwhile our real opponents, the other alliance, were farming honour.
Holy Smokes! Was already a fan based on your hunter and other videos, but now I recognize your Silvermoon character name! Mine was Speedyone, hunter (R13) in the Marshall's group shortly after you, but I know we shared kills at Xroads! I believe Kristophe and Bubbrubb ranked out just before me as I recall. Biased, but would love to see more on old school PvP, single server and tactics of AB and warsong at that time!
Man, I remember you. I played on Silvermoon back in Vanilla around the same time. I was in the same guild as the mage Brio that you showed a screenshot of in group with. I even used to BG with a group of pvper's that the server called "the marshals" if you remember that? I'm pretty sure you were involved in that group bahaha. Wow great vid, brought me down a bit of memory lane.

I still haven't found a video where they explain a few effective ways to farm Honorable Kills. Can you tell me what you think will be the most effective way on classic or what you did when BGs were not out.
Yo thanks for watchin. Well we don't know if the numbers are going to be exactly the same on classic yet, though there's little reason for them to be different.
City bosses like Cairne are good honor if you can kill them in a small group without getting ganked by the opposite faction. Other than that, you want to be looking for new players to kill. If you kill someone repeatedly on the same day, your honor for them will go down. So if you're raiding a town and it's just the same players you keep killing, it's best to leave and find some different players to kill.

I did play back in 2005. However, I wasn't super hard into rank grinding only made r6 then/just raided after that. Thus my question is: If you xfer, do you lose your current rank? My server on classic is dying tbh, and I'm not willing to do raids tues/thurs 'cause I don't wanna respec every week. We were doing mon/tues allowing for a total of 13 days before you had to respec, and that was very convenient for me.
I know I'm a year late, but I'd love to hear more old school stories. I was really young when I started vanilla, so I don't really remember much of it. It would be nice to know from someone, who has a working memory. : )

I ranked to 11 on a warrior and pally on eu aszune server but rl meant I couldn't go higher both before patch 1.12, people just don't realise the grind nesessary to achieve rank 14 great video brought back good memories.

I could, but... they wouldn't be that applicable in classic. Since classic is based on patch 1.12 and I did this grind long before that. Paladin got a huge overhaul in I believe, 1.9.
Great man only hit rank 12 myself was in a serious pvp guild farmed wsg on my druid... We only hade one grand Marshall to on our server. Grinded the crap out off wow back in the day irl work got in the way off my rank 14 grind. I only made it to rank 12 I think before tbc came out. But I remember the grind was real. Av BG could last hours to even half a day. I remember getting up sat and sun morning around 5am and playing until 2am. 😢

Bracket stacking is a constant issue in WSG and before the AV changes
i hit rank 10 on my druid and got the feral attack power weapon off of one of the world bosses, I supplemented my gear with raiding gear, ran resto and feral depending on my mood. My RL bro did the r14 grind, he mostly did it solo but I queued with him a lot, he played a min of 12 hours a day, would only sleep a few hours and go to work. We wrecked a lot of WSG, I'd carry flags and he would return. Good times but I wouldn't do it again. I tried classic, leveled to 60 and found that I had 0 drive to grind rank again or even raid.

How the hell did your brother do it solo?? Do you know? Was he doing shit like using botting in AV/paying someone to play around the clock when he wasn’t playing/etc?? Very few people got rank 14 playing solo back in the day on my server, and it was only through nonstop cheating that they were able to do it.
The rest of us played on a team, but those few cheaters would ruin things for us in that we would be forced to account share in our final week or two of the push to have a friend play for us a few hours a night just so we could get a tiny bit of sleep in, because otherwise the cheaters would out-honor us. I was beyond salty having an extra week added to my grind in the final weeks, just because of a cheater beating me one week, leaving me with no other choice but to submit to account sharing. : /

An amazing accomplishment but funny to see you with no Ony bags. I had full ony bags on my characters and bank within the first 4 months of classic. I bought them of course.
I didn't really start raiding until after rank 14. There was no time to raid while grinding.
We also didn't have a bottomless bag crafter on our server for a long time.

@@anti-ethniccleansing465 I was server first rank 14, I can't remember how long it took, it was all a blur, 16+ hours a day for 7 days a week towards the end of it. Once battlegrounds had came out I formed a whole guild exclusively for PvP, I got many of my ranks before battlegrounds was released though.
ranking on a pve server is probably completely different experience than what most people will remember. I did PvP and it was massacre all the way till phase 4. People were pushed off servers, whole cities were camped, flight masters were camped and killed, ect. It was extremely hardcore.
There is nothing like the nostalgia for seeing 4 Level 60s at the top of a hill with the skull symbol while leveling. PvE Server totally different.
On Terenas Alliance side, horde would always smash us. Mainly because of one warrior, who got the rank of Grand Marshal 2nd on the server, that did not step down from rank 1 for nearly a year. This made it very hard win battle when most of the horde team had general ranked players.
Wow that's insane. I mean, I still played some games after hitting rank 14, but I didn't try to hold the rank. Let alone for a year.

Yeah man it's extremely rare. Probably the rarest item I still have from vanilla is misplaced servo arm.

I understand that completely. I quit playing my paladin for a while after hitting 14 and played a priest nonstop for like a month. Eventually went back to the paladin later, mostly for raiding.

Well it's hard to say. It seems like the population cap on servers is a lot higher than it was in vanilla and we have more people PvPing, so that will mean more people can be higher rank at any one time. From my experience so far on my server, a lot of people pop in for a few days a week, A LOT more than back in the day, with not many going really hardcore. Will definitely depend on your server, I imagine Faerlina, Whitemane etc., will be really tough.
@@Bigbobbedboi Actually why don't people who aim for rank 14, level up 10 alts to minimum level required for pvp and get 15 honorable kills on all alts each week so they get into pvp pool? that way you can open up more HWL Slots LIKE from my understandment if 1k players get above 15 honorable kills there's 3 slots for highwarlord now imagine if they did they same on 10 alts.

One thing you didn't say whether the satisfaction at the end was worth the 5 months full time. Looking back on the experience, it sounds fun to have made it so just wondering if that offset the time out of irl. I might just be pushing for 13
You know, it's really hard to say. I mean, it took a hell of a lot of time and I'm sure I could have used that time for something more productive.
On the other hand, I remember all this shit like 15 years later, vividly. So it definitely made an impact on my life.
The satisfaction was awesome. And the amount of FUN had was unforgettable. Best gaming experiences of my life, bar none. Was sacrificing IRL worth it though? No. The very same boyfriend that introduced me to the WoW broke up with me later because of the addicting time suck that went into my getting rank 14, and it took me around nine months to achieve on my server - not five like this luckier guy.
To pour salt in the wound, all of that dedication was made worthless with the first expansion, which is indescribable how much that pissed me off. They even made our freaking titles worthless because everyone and their mother could easily earn it now with how casual they made the system. It was brutal, and I never forgave Blizzard for that shit. I left the game after playing it for no more than 3 years.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Definitely an IRL cost there, but obviously you still remember that satisfaction and fun. I definitely missed some IRL things including the GF but now that it's been such a long time since I played, I really realise how rare it is to make such good memories that I did in game. Still some of my fondest moments for sure and doubt that time in IRL would have produced the same!

I'm an original server/world first rank 14 from Lightning's Blade. It's hard to even express to people the difference in early pvp compared to even Classic pvp grind. The grind was brutal after battlegrounds came out. I had a wonderful time pre-battlegrounds though, as a solo/small group rogue. In battlegounds I specialized as a flagrunner, using my sublety rogue as utility and escaping the defense and darting across the arena.

I got to rank 13 about a week before they announced TBC. I was so pissed it was all for nothing

Vanilla Rank 13 here, circa patch 1.5. Some points to reinforce this video. Everyone points to AV as having the greatest honor gain potential, but that was only in theory. The reality was the WSG/AB grind. AV would be seen as a welcome break from that grind, and only done during off-hours if your premade team was offline - speaking of, it was basically impossible to get to R14 without a premade. You could PuG your -way to R8 or even R9, but not beyond that. And, rather obviously, the better your premade (esp. against other premades) the faster your honor gain. So it's true what the critics say: this system rewarded time, not skill, but what they forget to mention is skill got you there an awful lot faster.
Tactics were fairly simple, on paper, with few variations. In AB the goal was to cap and hold the "Iron Triangle" (Lumber Mill, Blacksmith and Stables if Alliance, Farm if Horde). Versus a weak premade or a PuG you'd obviously go for the kill and push their GY. In WSG, tactics would vary only depending on how much or how little you wanted to reinforce your flag running team. Two was seen as sufficient, the other 8 would dominate the field to clear the way.
There was no "bracket stacking" as far as I was aware. Our understanding of the system was imperfect. Just the scratch my back, scratch yours of people not getting in the way of somebody who was close to R14. If you were R13, you might ease off the gas just a bit to let them ding, even if they weren't on your team.
In 1.12.1 with cross server and the AV changes made AV on bonus weekend, by far the best. On a non weekend, AB stomping with a top tier pre-made maybe was better but it was close. Some people on my server could get a full AV clear in 6-8 mins with a AV "pre-made". That inflated the honor numbers up to ridiculous levels. We're talking like almost 3 million honor (IIRC the record on my server was 2.9 or there abouts). I got standing 8 with 2.4 million honor!
The AV changes also made some pubs able to compete for R14. They would share accounts or just bot their way. There were about 3-4 on my server, some of whom I still remember their names; that's how notorious they were.
WSG was only viable with a top pre-made or on WSG weekend. But even then, the honor figures would be at best 1 million or slightly over. My last week got standing 1 with 850k or something there abouts.
I hated it when x-realm bgs were introduced in the last week before I made rank 13.
Before at some point bgs would no longer open and you could go to sleep. In the first x-realm week everyone was doing PvP and it was hard to keep track on which Chars have honor, because you see a lot of new faces and groups.

R14 in today's classic wow is just 12 hours of AV per day to try and average 1-2mil honour per week.

No classic av meta and the wsg games could take 30mins to an hour to complete which wasnt always a win.
Like M ks said, AV was not the meta at the time.
Also I think I mentioned in the video, queue times. Alliance massively outnumbered horde on my server so we had ridiculous queue times, since it wasn't cross server yet. There also wasn't a deserter penalty for a lot of this grind, so if horde saw they were up against us in WSG, they'd just AFK out.
My games rarely took long though. If the horde didn't afk out, we'd usually win in 10m or so in wsg, AB I don't really remember how long they took.

Got burnt out after hitting rank 11. I remember eating at the table and turning my laptop towards me just incase AV popped. Fun but tough times, wont do it again.
The r14 grind is kinda weird now, people are just q'ing AV and losing to get honor.

It definitely does feel weird now that we've got BGs in classic. One of the things I liked most about the grind was that I had friends to do it with. I still talk to some of those people 14 years later. Now everyone just doing AV solo.
God, that sounds like pure torture! I woulda never done that grind without playing my boys! So sad sounding.
Imagine staying focused for that long, I can barely stay focused for 40 minutes while working or playing or doing anything really.

I'd say this is a grind but if you come from osrs/rs then you're familiar with grind. Call me crazy but I didn't find the grind boring, the only boring and dreadful part of grinding rep is putting together a team.

Yeah, it's completely different though. I hit r10 on my alt last week with 236k honor and that was a hell of a lot less of a time commitment than 150k honor was in vanilla.
Sadly this didnt age well..bracket stacking is super prevalent and in 2 months we got multiple rank 14s...congrats as a ret paladin doing the grind and achieving your goal.
Yeah for sure some of my speculation didn't line up with what panned out in classic. The main point of this vid was to talk about how it was in vanilla, so that part still holds up imo.
Only 150K BR1 sooo funny today Classic WoW BR1 on many servers is 1Mil Honor or more
Grand marshal in wow classic is same like rank max knight in vanilla WoW ..why ? because now you grind much more honor thanks to all pre TBC patches released with Classic wow unlike in vanilla WoW...there is also this thing called cross server play where now you can AFK your rank fully to grand marshal as long as you are on low population server...to be honest ..there is no way to compare rank grand marshal during vanilla wow and classic wow...since those 2 are 2 different game...classic is a soft babe compared to vanilla difficulty and requirements...
Lolz. I’m not surprised that Blizzard couldn’t help but casualize rank 14 in Classic. I’m glad I didn’t sucked in to come back. They over-casualized the system as it was way back in TBC expansion. I was beyond pissed to see that shit after I went through the insane grind in vanilla. They trivialized my HWL title overnight. The fux lol.

R14 with 150k honor? Damn I wish it was so to this day! Getting into BR3 with 800k honor/week is a dream now :/
P.S. Now you can calculate honor, standing and RP gain very precisely along with brackets with addon HonorSpy. It also accounts for diminishing returns.
Yeah the numbers are definitely very different in classic, but that's to be expected. There was no cross realm BGs at the time, so there weren't enough people to do AV all day. We were lucky if it popped during the weekend and even then, it was slower honor because it wasn't 1.12 version of AV.
Doing AB/WSG all day, with half hour or more queues in between games, 150k honor is a metric fuck ton.

I had not pushed ranking back in 2005-6, but seriously, i cant understand people saying that it requires no life. Personally i was rank 7, without even trying, queueing solo once in a full moon, with like one healer in my team, or no healer at all. I dont complain, i know this is the pug way of life. However if i get a spot in a competent premade, i can and will grind it till the end. Next time you say it requires you to nolife it, try to go for it solo.

At the time you didn't. We had our premade set up so that whoever had been at it the longest would get rank one that week/was next in line for Grand Marshal, unless you weren't playing enough. There were only games from like 10am to 4am on our server and our premade was the best so no other groups were going to get more honor than us.
If there are a lots of competing groups, then definitely you do. You need to do whatever you can to get more honor and whatever you can so that no one else gets more honor than you.

yes and no. If you're doing it solo it's going to be very hard to get into 13/14th bracket if everyone else is doing premades.
Flippin _son is right. You wouldn't get a perma spot in a premade if you weren't good. Also, as I may have mentioned in the video, you had to win the games. If you lose the games, you're going to get less honor and not rank. Go do WSG on classic and see how much honor you get when you cap 0 flags.

I ran our faction’s team in vanilla for the horde (Booyakasha, troll shaman on the Bloodscalp server). If someone sucked, their arse was not getting invited! Period. You could always tell quickly who could actually play well and who couldn’t.
We didn’t have a pvp guild back then - so I just kept a list of cool/fun peeps that knew how to be great teammates and played seriously, but were also reliable where they played consistently enough to be called in when there was an opening and step aside when they’d played enough for the week so order of progress was kept for all.
Rank 14 is only for people who don’t go to work .
Not always, a friend of mine just played on his work computer, haha. He got rank 14 about a month ago.
Even back in vanilla I knew a guy who set up a VNC so he could play it from work.
