    I think you have encapsulated the joy of this game, in the way that very few have beforehand. It is my favourite game of all time; the music is immeasurably good and Aerith' theme is so so perfectly weighted, the plot focusing about being honest about your past so you can be who you really are and the honesty on death makes this a game that I do not believe will ever be equaled. Very good video.

      As someone who's played all numbered titles but the lightning saga and beat VI, VII, VIii, and X three times; I got past Lindblum and shut it off. I can't do it. ATB is painfully slow, world map theme is akin to a lullaby, Zidane is a bit annoying, Steiner is a stereotype stock guard character, etc. I don't get why people hold it in such high regard other than it serving as a tribute (which imo feels like a step back and doesnt advance the series in any way)

    Final Fantasy VII has been built up as very dramatic and meaningful, and while it certainly did have those aspects, I noticed the expanded cash cow universe has sort of ignored the silly. Sephiroth is an insane momma's boy, Cloud dresses as woman, your party features a robot cat golem, Final Fantasy VII can be very silly and it is awesome. Thanks for not downplaying that aspect.

  • @holamoco
    @holamoco 6 лет назад +49

    Sephiroth doesn't know Jenova is an alien, he thinks it's an Ancient, a Cetra. And that the humans wiped out the Ancients and wants to revenge her mother and kill all those "evil" humans, and those who oppose him of course. And then with time wanting to become a God just like his powerful mother was and rule the world as their liking, he is more or less justifing his cause/reason because of their (humans) evil acts against the Ancients and on his mother.
    Sephiroth wasn't stabbed in the back, he was stabbed in the stomach, as you see clearly in your own video he turns around before Cloud stabs. Stabbed in the back version comes from the short anime movie "Last Order", where they changed some details of what happened in Niebelheim.

    • @Sawngawkuh
      @Sawngawkuh 5 лет назад +23

      Actually, Sephiroth does know full well that she is an alien in the present.
      It's only during the Nibelheim Incident that he believed she was an Ancient due to the misinformation contained within those Shinra logs, as they had misidentified her as a Cetran. However, after falling into the Lifestream and absorbing all that knowledge from the Ancients, he learned what she truly was all along. This is why his goals shifted from being about revenge to wanting to become a god-like being, with little concern over "taking back" the Planet (hell, his new goal requires him to further WOUND the Planet rather than save it from humanity).
      Fans tend to be mistaken and think he believes she's an Ancient throughout the whole game because he still calls the creature his "mother" during the Temple of the Ancients section, but that's simply because he still views her as such. He knows that she isn't his birth mother, but that doesn't really matter to him. After all, even back when he found out and erroneously believed she was an ancient, he knew he wasn't literally birthed out of her like regular people. The notes clearly speak of this being as an entity that was found in stasis, not a living person who walked among them, conceived, then had a baby. At the end of the day, she is still the being that was used in the experiments that created him, and that's enough for him to view her as his mother.
      The only things he never really found out about were Lucrecia and Hojo being his real parents. However, at that point, he probably wouldn't even care.

    It's pretty great to hear others talk about what they love with such passion. You may forget it sometimes in this clusterfuck of disappointment that it is the internet, but the way videogames can connect with someone can be quite beautiful and even make you change your "position" about things by just hearing others. Probably why I like this guy so much.
    Personally, I've never been the biggest fan of VII, and while I don't like how much it affected the industry or Square itself, I hold quite the respect for the game, even if I have a few issues with it.
    For example, I felt the concept of the materia system undermined the value of the characters themselves as useful members of the party, instead of having interesting abilities or powers that diferenciate each member, they depend on "things" to do stuff for them, making me feel like anyone with those "things" would be able to do the same things these supposed heroes do. Being "special" because you happen to hold something that let's you do interesting stuff is a big turn-off for me, compared to other games where you learn or develop abilities over time and they feel part of the character.
    Mechanically wise, though, the materia system is quite good and fun to mess with, so as I said, my dislike with the materia is just the concept.
    That said, I think it has a lot of other great things that Clement pointed nicely in this fantastic video, and generally speaking I believe it's a pretty good game, even if it shows it's age more than the other old FF's.
    It's depressing to see the original game and how each "Expanded universe" thing they added onto it hurt the original story more, and more, and more...

    *Adjusts nerdgirl glasses
    Limit Breaks were introduced in FFVI as Desperation Attacks that triggered when a character who had critically low health used a regular attack. But the proc rate was extremely low (1 in 16 chance and cannot trigger in the first 25 seconds of combat), so I can see how people might have missed them.

    • @bartymatrix7

      Really though, FF7 MADE the limit system. Personal attacks and different animations and such.

    • @Kara99tg
      @Kara99tg 7 лет назад +6

      The Desperation Attacks were unique animations to each character in VI. But they weren't a key mechanic of combat, since no one really knew how to make them happen at the time and would heal whenever their HP got low. FFVIII used a similar system, but the trigger was just low health and not low health plus more than 25 seconds into a battle. VII definitely highlighted Limit Breaks as a feature of combat though, because they liked the idea from VI where characters could get these awesome attacks if they took damage in battle and wanted to build on that. Plus, the better technology allowed them to do more flashy attacks and they really wanted to show off what they could do with the battle system (also why Summons were so much grander in scale than previous Final Fantasy games).

      @bartymatrix7 7 лет назад +1

      Kara99tg Yeah what you said.

    • @mopeybloke
      @mopeybloke 7 лет назад +2

      I think people are too quick to in their idea that Limit Breaks were merely an iteration of desperation attacks (are those really named as such in game?). In VI there were techniques that characters could use always (slots, tools, Blitz), and those that they could rarely ever use (the DA). Limit Breaks were devised as a compromise to me. If you think about it, some Limits seems to be designed after the first type of ability (like Slots).

    54:03 I remember having Yuffie in my party when Aerith was killed, and I was initially in shock, just silent, ya know? Then I saw Yuffie's reaction and that's when I was just nailed by a flood of emotions. It was so *real*.
    Hironobu Sakaguchi lost his mother while developing FFIII, so he wrote FFVII with the themes of life and death. It's why when Aerith died there was no *recovery* of the time and resources the player put into developing her. That was gone, along with Aerith, and all that was left were the memories. I remember at the time so many players thought there must have been SOME way to bring her back, but there never was.
    Happened in FFVI but to a lesser extent with General Leo. Players thought there had to be a way to bring him back but Sakaguchi was like NOPE. But we didn't know then what he'd teach us with FFVII.

    This was, definitely something to watch. For the longest time I kind of forgot why I loved 7 so much, other than just using the excuse of it being the first game I ever played, and it being my gateway into Final Fantasy. Everyone I know around me despise 7 so it's fantastic for me to see people who genuinely enjoy the game and understand what makes it great. I need to play through FF7 again, since I have it on Steam. I'll probably play it with the Reunion mod set installed, since it re-translated the game using the original Japanese script and apparently there were some story changes to the American version. Crazy thing I've heard: because the game was so popular in the west, the expanded FF7 franchise goes by the story as it was presented in the western localization, even if it differs from the intent of the original script. I'm not sure of the extent of it, but I suppose this next run through the game will shed some light on it, assuming I can get the mod to work.

    Having just recently played FF7 (as party of my Final Fantasy introductory marathon), I can say that I'm glad I finally did. I really enjoyed it.
    The story was pretty cool. Cloud past was interesting to learn about, there were good character beats, and Sephiroth was a neat villain. I thought the fmv cutscenes were pretty cool (although they felt like they needed voice acting).
    The gameplay was fun. The Limit system is cool and is much more useful than the desperation attack system from 6. While I think the materia system works pretty well, but it cumbersome for someone like me who wanted to try and use all of the party members as much as possible. However, I thought some of the minigames/gimmicks were annoying (mostly the march and snowboarding). The chocobo breeding was fine, I mostly did it to get the Knights of Round, quad magic and master all materia.
    Some favourite characters of mine were Tifa (I shipped her with Cloud more than Aerith), Cid, Yuffie and Vincent (both gameplay and story wise).
    However, I think FF6 resonated with me ever so slightly more. I think Kefka was a slightly more enticing villain than Sephiroth. And the sad scene in 6 hit me harder than some of the sad scenes in 7 (which might just be a musical preference issue, not necessarily writing).
    Next up is Crisis Core, then either FF8 (probably when a PS4 port comes), FF9 or a break from Final Fantasy for a bit (to play Yakuza 0).

    42:49 - If this is addressed in the remake, I would approve. It's one of the few changes I'd legitimately be alright with. He literally steals the key to the Black Materia, and then says we should go on like nothing happened. And the party is ok with it. Seriously, this is a thing.

    7:24 - Yeah, the justification for them blowing up the reactors and killing scores of innocent people in the process is definitely asinine, and both sides really come off as horrible. If the remake is decent, MAYBE it would be worth doing a video on, but considering they plan on 'radically changing parts of the story', the canonicity of it will likely be questionable at best. As I said, the expanded universe of VII feels like nothing more than fanfiction.

    In my opinion the fact that the developers tried to innovate on so many different levels is a double-edged sword.
    On one hand the overabundance of battle animations, mini games and background lore gave people playing it back in the day plenty of mind blowing moments and thus memories to still call it their favorite game to this day.
    On the other hand the disparity between the enormous degree ambition, technical limitations and lack of experience can be felt all the more and is most likely the reason why a more grounded experience like Final Fantasy 6 or 9 is usually preferred by newcomers to the series.

    • @DevilHunter1994
      @DevilHunter1994 6 лет назад

      Really? I thought Ultimecia was easy. It just takes 3 steps
      1. Get the Lionheart. You don't need to bother making any other weapons. Just get the Lionheart.
      2. Draw 100 hero spells (I think that's the name of the spell that makes triggering a limit break much more likely, but I'm not sure)
      3. Keep using the spell on Squall and have him spam his limit break over and over until you inevitably win.

    • @rydiaofmist8190
      @rydiaofmist8190 6 лет назад +1

      DevilHunter1994 It was my first playthrough. I already knew about lionheart, too. But I never unsealed limit breaks. I unsealed item, draw, magic, resurrect and gf. Then went after her. I spammed her with ultima and flare with tripple after weakening her defenses with meltdown, and used hero on Selphie and Quistis when she revealed her lower half, because she blasted away their regens which was junctioned to hp. After a long exciting battle, she finally started talking, ending with "and" after which she died. Which was great timing, too. Because the next day, an NES reproduction cartridge of 2 came in and I beat that 2 days ago. So, now I officially beat 1-10 and 12.

    After watching this “good job by the way” I’m honest to god worried about the remake. Modern Square would not allow any of this stuff to appear in the game in terms of the adult humor, gameplay, and particular character traits. I hope I’m wrong and the game turns out great but the way everything’s looking and seeing Squares actions as of late with there current business practices and the way there treating XV I’m gonna remain full on skeptical. It would not suprise me at all if they had an aerith alive dlc. Personally I think VII just needs a graphics overhaul and a text touch up. Leave everything else alone and Boom 💥 Instant seller 💰 💰 💰

    • @NyxTheBraix
      @NyxTheBraix 7 лет назад +1

      I think you're mistaking Square for Blizzard or Activision. The way the industry goes nowadays is not Square's mindset at the moment. They even made this clear when they showed that they wanted to take the Games as a Service model because they want to add a lifetime longevity towards one game. Sure, Final Fantasy XV has story DLC and such, but they are always free and explore the characters in much more depth (Don't you dare tell me that Episode Prompto isn't good). RIght now, XV shows a perfect balance between the modern industry and a classic.
      The fact that it isn't a fucking Turn based RPG doesn't mean there isn't a layer of strategy either. People think that "Spamming potions and holding circle" is the way to go on XV but that really isn't the case. Since you have to be mindful regarding priorities and positioning. Pretty much like the Xenoblade Chronicles ripoff that it is.
      VII Remake is going to be great. And I seriously doubt Square-Enix would take out any of the moments that made the original good. Otherwise if we had the plot that was entirely focused on the serious moments it would be really dull.
      So yeah, have a litle faith.
