The execution is weird and wonky, but I can't overstate how much I adore the _idea_ that X-2 was exploring; what happens to a world after it's saved? The empire falls, the immortal evil God is permanently vanquished, the evil religion that ruled over everyone's lives lies in tatters. *Now what?* The world has been irrevocably altered. Entire ways of life have been invalidated. Old prejudices were indisputably proven to be founded on lies. Everything people thought was true was found to be false. No one can be who they were before; it if impossible. _So who do they become now?_ It's an incredible question for a game to ask, and I really do want to see it revisited one day.

I only wish it was bigger; 2 years after a monster that destroys major city's dies and they only rebuild Kilika? AND IT'S TINY?! I would love to see a big village in Besaid, a huge Kilika port, maybe a town or 2 on the Mi'hen high road or the Moonflow. Go and get/steal items from people's houses lol.

Yuna going from a timid summoner to a bubbly, treasure-hunting gunslinger was kind of jarring on first impression, but it is a nice bit of character development. Before X-2 her destiny had always been determined by external forces and people, and now with Sin gone she, like the rest of Spira, has the opportunity to forge her own path through life, and she's taking full advantage of it. Helps that Tidus rubbed off on her big time and gave her the confidence to dive headfirst into this new world. You can tell a lot of her actions here are an answer to the question, "What would Tidus do?"

  • @fable23
    @fable23 5 лет назад +184

Chalk me up as one of those people who thinks the "second best" ending is actually the most emotionally satisfying one. The wish fulfillment of the 100% ending is nice and all, but it's far more resonant to see Yuna have to do what we all will one day have to; accept that someone we love is gone, cherish the love and memories we had, and move on as the better person they helped to make us.

I can kind of understand the reasoning behind the change to Yuna's character. This is a person who spent her entire life preparing to sacrifice herself and resigned herself to the inevitability of her premature death, only to have the thing that put her in that situation eliminated. She got a second lease on life. It's not uncommon to see someone who has been through a near-death experience become more eccentric and outgoing. Sometimes it because they've realized that you never know when your number is up and want to live life to the fullest. Sometimes, as I experienced in the military, you'll see that they've fallen under the delusion that they're invincible and become outgoing to the point of stupidity. Everyone responds differently to trauma and for better or worse, I think Yuna shows remarkable emotional balance.

I've always found Yunas extravagant behavior to be her trying to be someone she's not, like a childish backlash. She's saddened over the loss of Tidus, and the role Yevon played in it, she's trying to find herself and doing that by revolting against the conservative rules she used to live by, she's trying to mimic Tidus's more jovial attitude, and trying to fit in with Riku, and she's failing, it feels forced because, well, she's forcing it.

  • @InvaderWeezle

It's great that there's finally a big review of this game. Before now pretty much all we've had has been Spoony's videos on the game, and it's hard to call those a "review" when all they are is cracking jokes at the story for the most part. So having an in-depth look at X-2 is something I've been longing for for years. Thanks for making this and I loved the video!

    • @okagron
      @okagron 5 лет назад +9

How is the Spoony's review hardly a review? He pretty much touches on everything in the game. The childish story and how utterly repetitive it is, the crappy characters, how juvenile the tone of the game is and the gameplay. Making jokes while you are making a critical analysis (he analyses all the aspects of the game) doesn't somehow make it hardly a review.

    • @InvaderWeezle
      @InvaderWeezle 5 лет назад +7

@@okagron Because he barely touches on the actual gameplay, which is the most important part of any video game review. If X-2 was a movie then sure he covered it fine enough, but as a video game review it's pretty lacking.

@Dawaza Thats a bit of a narrow-minded way to see things I think. Personally, I think the DD sidequests are absolutely awful and tedious busywork for the most part (this is coming from someone who did the achievement for completing all of em).

I actually liked X-2 a lot when I was younger.
I guess I didn't see the transition in tone shift that jarring since this was years after Sin was defeated.
I saw the change in characters attitude like Yunas as a weird way of paying respect to Tidus and others that died to sin. If the people who died saw that when Sin finally was gone the people who remained didn't move on or enjoyed the peace they fought so hard for, it would be a form for disrespect against their sacrifice.
But this also feels like a front for many characters (especially Yuna) since despite the happy and goofy situations and music, the game has this underlying sadness. Though Yuna as a character has evolved since 10, it feels like she tries to imitate Tidus and how he would act in certain situations. But despite her putting on a brave face, it feels like her happiness is a facade and underneath she never truly moved on.
I also liked the message that even after Sin, human nature still makes people fight and create groups. Either out of beliefs, grudges, religion or pure tribalism. When this should be a time where the world should be united.

I totally forgot that the Yuna, Rikku, and Brother from FFX-2 practically different characters compared to their FFX versions. It’s as if the WHOLE IDEA to create FFX-2 didn’t come from the creators of FFX, but rather was by a SquareEnix committee of executives wanting to bank off the success of FFX. So they decided to hand the development of FFX-2 to someone who had no idea who Yuna and Rikku were let alone their respective character arcs or traits. Thus the outrageous and stark contrasts between those character’s in FFX to FFX-2.
    such cringe. much wow.

Sounds about right. As far as I'm concerned, X-2 is nothing but a cynical load of juvenile, fanservice hogwash that takes a dump on the established lore and characters from the first game in the name of milking its success and pacifying the immature wusses who couldn't tolerate its tragic ending. Add onto that the embarrassing degree of content/asset recycling and you have a followup that I like to pretend isn't canon.
I've never touched this sequel and I never plan to. Sorry, but my memories of the original title (you know, the one that was borne out of actual artistic integrity and passion) matter more to me than a few scant hours of "fun".

Yeah, the 100% completion is a serious flaw in this game. When visiting all Spira locations in chapter three, I visited the Calm Lands, and Shinra installed a CommSphere. I didn't visit the Chocobo Ranch because I didn't know Shinra would put one there, too, so I missed out on the percentage for chapter four in viewing some of the Sphere scenes at the Chocobo Ranch. But I was using a guide I found on the internet and the guide I was using was terrible. It told you a lot of things but it didn't tell you a lot of things you'd need to set up to get all the completion points or to complete all the episodes in chapter 5.

also another fun fact that i forgot is that during the final boss fight with Shuyin there is a very interesting dialogue you can get
if he has 1/2 of max HP or higher remaining, 1/10 chance of yelling or a
quote from Braska, Auron, or Jecht (each quote can only be used once, and
Shuyin does nothing) - quotes randomly chosen
    Braska: "Be strong, Yuna."
Braska: "You're the only ones who can stop him."
    Auron: "Stay focused."
    Auron: "End his cheap tricks."
Jecht: "Put that crybaby to sleep!"
if he has less than 1/2 of max HP remaining, 1/14 chance of yelling or a
quote from Braska, Auron, or Jecht (each quote can only be used once, and
Shuyin does nothing) - quotes randomly chosen
    Braska: "It's almost over, Yuna."
Braska: "He can't take much more."
    Auron: "Yuna, don't falter now."
    Auron: "Good."
    Jecht: "Not much longer now."
    Jecht: "Yeah!"
Jecht: "Don't let up! Keep fighting!"
    BUT ON TOP OF THIS
"The Final Fantasy X-2: International + Last Mission Ultimania posits that Dream Zanarkand was created as the ideal representation of the original Zanarkand, a wish given form. Since the original Zanarkand was the model for everything in Dream Zanarkand, this extended to its inhabitants, who would marry one another and have children, continuing the cycle of life. Thus the genes of the dream's inhabitants blended to form a unique populace. According to this it is unlikely Shuyin is the direct model for Tidus, as Dream Zanarkand's Shuyin should have lived a millennium ago."

I loved X and X-2, I believe If it was made now it would be better but me and my sis played X-2 first and then X and we enjoyed learning about what Yuna did and earned and how Tidus deserved to get his happiness. Specially with how much this story could go into with a world that knew nothing about its past to the point they were fed lies and rolled with it. Now people are out there exploring and finding new info cuz they don't wanna be in the dark. It had potential I think it didnt quite reach but it could've. X-3 is...idk it will ruin the close. Besides I like the happy tune, people moved on their threat was gone and now they can actually enjoy life and that means Yuna too. I enjoyed its wacky nature but there are frustrations of course with certain controls. My biggest gripe was them not going to far into the obvious connection to Shuyin and Tidus and how much of a big impact it was for learning about the war between Bevelle and Zanarkand in a little more depth. Pain was my favorite also Shinra and I wish they went into editing Lulus for her baby bump but what ya can do lol

TBH I never really liked X-2 happy ending. I thought it undermined the sad ending of X, and for me, the true ending was always the sad one. Because for me the story was always about Yuna accepting that Tidus is gone, cherishing the memory of him and letting go. This even has a nice parallel with the antagonist, as he's someone who couldn't let go and basically would destroy the world because of his grieve.
Also, the happier tone of the game was always more of a charade in my opinion, at least for Yuna. They defeated Sin and saved the world, so everyone is obviously overjoyed, but if you listen to most of Yuna's monologues, it's almost always somber. Yuna went from pretending to be happy in X to give hope to the people, to pretending to be happy in X-2 because they saved the world, even when it cost her the love of her life.
I actually really liked X-2, I'd even say it's on par with X for me. I've beat X-2 100% about 5 times, ranging from the original PS2 version to the current Steam one, and I do get that it's tedious, and basically requires you to have a guide, but it still has a very special place in my heart.

I really enjoyed 10-2. Mainly to see Yuna break outta her shell was so....refreshing to see! FFX was so somber , any fun that was being had was just to take yiur mind off sin for awhile, but to see the people of Spira finally have the freedom and peace, who am i to judge Yuna on how she chooses to live? She damn deserved it! The game play was so fun, i loved this game. Cut Yuna some slack. Shes forcing herself to change for the better! Shes no longer a summoner, no longer bound by rules and regulations, of course she wants to let her hair down and enjot the rest of her life, possibly looking for Tidus
Also, NEVER knew that Yuna was hiding in a fucking Moogle suit!! Wtf? THAT is what kept me from completing the game 100%!!! I searched EVERYWHERE for that last mission or item or WHATEVER i was missing!! (except there! Because wtf)

I've beaten the game 5 times across the PS2 and PS4 versions.
(Fun fact: Remember the PS2 Memory Card and the little models they used for files when you were looking through it all? X-2 used three or four of them, purely to pinpoint how many playthroughs that file was working from, up to a point where it was 'x playthroughs onward')
I've never seen the stuff inside the Den of Woe, simply because I never got all the Crimson Spheres. Here's the list, with each number representing the appropriate sphere:
    1) Go to where you fought Bahamut once Djose Temple becomes a Hotspot in Chapter 3. Watch the event and fight a side boss. Clement commented on how easily you can miss this one.
    2) Received at the end of Chapter 3. Unmissable.
    3) Received at the end of Chapter 3. Unmissable.
    4) Chateau Leblanc, in Chapter 3 or 5. Semi-Missable since it isn't locked behind an event.
    5) Celcius Engine Room in Chapter 4, after the concert. Missable if you don't talk to Leblanc.
    6) Floor 0 of Via Infinito. Missable if you don't go there.
    7) Speak to Nooj outside the Chamber of Woe in Chapter 2. Missable.
    8) Reach Floor 20 of Via Infinito. Defeat the Aranea boss to receive the sphere.
    9) Go to the Den of Woe in Chapter 1.
    10) Chateau Leblanc, in Chapter 2. Unmissable.
Yeah, getting to the Den of Woe content is a fucking pain.

Brother's animations when you fight him are the stuff of nightmares

0:54 I DID! I always revisit all the temples when I replay FFX! I love getting as much of the story as I can and the Fayth always have something interesting, thematic, and very poetic to say!
Ain't none of THAT in FFX-2.

This was an awesome in-depth Review of this one, and it actually reflects my thoughts almost 1:1
I personally REALLY liked the Shuyin and Lenne storyline, due to how tragic it is and tbh it could've been its own game in a separate setting. Great Video

I was very confused about the J-pop music at the start and the theme of the game.
I'm shocked to see so many easily missable features in this game.
Hate playing games that require way too much busy work like this.
