      I think the scene is fine as it is. Like Clement said it's meant to be awkward, it's a way of dealing with some heavy shit, and at the end it helped tidus and yuna. they just seem so relatable.

    I met James Arnold Taylor at a Con a few months ago. He was the nicest guy ever, and was really surprised how good the condition of my PS2 FFX was. He said that the script was like a phone book, and it took him three months to record all his lines. He talked about how blown away he was that even twenty years later, people were still asking him to do the crazy Luca laugh, and Tidus's signature "c'ya!" When he defeats a fiend.

      I had my chance to meet him at my city's Fan Expo last August and boy, I'm so glad I went to see him.
      He's incredibly nice, humble, and just an all-around great person. I told him about the supposed rumors flying around of X having a remake and he would be delighted to come back to voice Tidus again. He's well into his 50s now and it amazes me that he still sounds exactly the same. He still has that youthful energy in his voice, and I honestly can't imagine Tidus being played by anyone else.

  • @ManyTanks1
    @ManyTanks1 4 года назад +181

    For the fact that Tidus hides the fact that he’ll fade away, you can interpret that as he knows that if he tells the group, especially yuna, about it after everything the groups been through, she’s gonna go “nope, pilgrimage over!” And keep sin living on forever. So it’s not a matter of tidus holding it in cause he’s selfish, he holds that fact back because he knows that’s the only way to break the cycle of sin

    Tidus is one of my favorite final fantasy characters. Ill be damned if anyone disrespects him. Dont know HOW people took that laughing scene out of context. As a damn kid whose 10 years old I could tell it was a forced laugh for Yunas sake. And the whole point was to be embarrassing. It was forced. And THEN Tidus had a legit laugh. Crazy to me.

    • @KOTEBANAROT
      @KOTEBANAROT 3 года назад +9

      Some people are legit kinda stupid, they can't read context for shit. I don't don't mean that they need to know the whole story. The scene ITSELF provides enough context on its own. When I first saw it, I understood the tone and idea behind it perfectly: I saw the exaggerated posture, the melancholy music, the faces of other characters, and knew its a forced laugh. When Yuna joined, I even felt the understanding and connection between the characters because she was a dignified looking lady nonetheless joining in a goofy performance. I never even knew people thought it was like, for real.
      My brother also read the scene the exact same way and he never played a single FF and barely even aware of its existence.

    • @johndavidtibbetts7320
      @johndavidtibbetts7320 2 года назад

      A lot of this is the fact that a lot of the voice direction is, well, it's an early 2000s video game dub of a JRPG. It's wooden, it's stilted, and it's awkward. On Yuna especially, where Hedy Burress - whom I KNOW is a great fucking actress - just sounds utterly lost.
      James Arnold Taylor does his absolute best, and in later appearances like Dissidia you can hear him more comfortable as Tidus, but I think the laugh scene was used mainly as an encapsulation of this.

    The final battle with the Aeons might be a playable cutscene but it is a very emotional one. I grew to love these Aeons and having to kill them while each of them delivers some final words like "Give me the desired rest", "Good by", "Defeat me", ore "Dont hesitate" is quite impactful.

  • @SyniStar616
    @SyniStar616 4 года назад +46

    17:20 Tide-us still makes sense when you consider Yuna is a moon reference. The moon influences the tide, and everything he does in game, for the most part, is under her influence. His father was a guardian for her father, and subsequently the host of Sin, which she is trying to rid the world of.

    • @Sawngawkuh
      @Sawngawkuh 4 года назад +2

      Problem is that Tidus' name is meant to serve contrast to Yuna's rather than being something influenced by the moon. Hence why it's derived from "Tida," meaning "Sun."

    • @jamesbrincefield9879

      I’ve always called him Tide-us too. It just felt like the way you were supposed to say it. Every single one of my friends called him the same. Water is a very prominent theme throughout the game so it just felt natural. Plus the spelling implies that’s how you’d say it too. I really don’t blame anyone for dying on either hill. I think both arguments are perfectly legitimate.

      One reason people say tee-dus is that the guy paid to narrate one the the ads just randomly chose to pronounce it that way. He had no idea what the game was about or any of the characters. Many people took that to be the authority/proof of the pronunciation, but it's really just a random guy reading it the way he thought it was pronounced.

    • @pokeplayerHQ
      @pokeplayerHQ 6 лет назад +1

      Well, you are actually right about that. The Super Bowl was bad this year. Sure, it wasn't the worst, (For me, that honor belongs to 50.) but it was still bad. How the Rams kept it low scoring for so long against the Patriots is a miracle in of itself, given the questionable plays that were made. However, after the first touchdown of the game, by the Patriots no less, it seemed like they just weren't giving it their all anymore. When the second one happened, and it was obvious the Patriots would win, it's like the Rams just gave up. The Rams try to make some last plays, but they don't make some smart ones. They don't even go for a touchdown to at least make the inevitable defeat mean something. Instead they go for a Field Goal that they miss. I was one who felt that the Rams did not deserve to be in the Super Bowl this year, based mainly on the game before it, and this defeat only enhances that belief for me.
      Oh, and as for the Halftime Show, the only good thing for me was that it was done by a number of singers whose songs I like. (I didn't like all of them, but most of them I did.) However, even those I liked didn't hit all the notes. It's obvious that a number of them are past their prime.
      As for the commercials, it was hit or miss. Some were good while others were either questionable or bad. You spend so much money to get your product out there. (Heck, one even had a story of some sort that took multiple commercials to tell.) However, some you just have to question if it was just a way to waste some cash the company in question had on hand. It felt like such a waste sometimes.
      After all of that, and a nice rest, I look forward to what Clement has to say about such a polarizing game. So much more entertaining than what I had to sit through last night.

When a fiend is defeated, or when a summoner performs a sending, they glow and thus are often mistaken as "arising when there is a loss of life." Pyreflies and water are said to harmonize easily. When a summoner performs a sending, the pyreflies on a water's surface can solidify into a foothold. The blitzball sphere pool utilizes pyreflies to congeal the water into a sphere. Just to add a bit more clarity to the whole ‘Dream Zanarkand’ idea; it’s less a dream, and more akin to an Aeon, and Yu Yevon is actually summoning it, it is a physical location being summoned far out to sea, and If you could travel far enough, you could reach it, hence Sin being ‘programmed’ to attack cities that get too big and technological. It’s a rather basic summary, so feel free to amend / correct below, but I thought I’d add it since Clement raises a few questions about it, and thought it might help.

      Sin is the aeon, Zanarkand is a dream being dreamt by the massive Gagazet fayth.
      That fayth powers yu yevon and sin as well as maintains the dream Zanarkand. Zanarkand was never being proyected on the real world, but you are correct about Sin being programmed to attack any settlement that began developing quite a bit seeing as Its programming was originally to attack and destroy Bevelle in a Fuck you final move from Zanarkand's best and most powerful summoner. He uses sin as a shell to protect himself and destroy any who could pose a threat to him or the city. Tidus Is basically a small part of the aeon, although the fayth tell him that now thatvhe left the city he might be something more. The other aeons in the temples are people who sacrificed themselves to grant summoners the power to combat yu yevon. Im not sure why only yunalesca seems to know the secret of creating new aeons. Spoony was hilarious but deeply unwell. His negativity and mock-heavy humour, his tendency to only focus on the negatives and downplay the positives and his zealous obsession with a rose-colored "glorious" past this series allegedly had turned him into a bitter loner who could never be satisfied with anything ever.
      Spoony is an example of how to be unhappy and miserable in life. Instead of finding joy in things he liked he actively pursued things with the sole intent of hating them. That sort of attitude is precisely why he turned into a loser loner destroyed by depression and alcohol abuse. Because it turns out, it's not healthy to be negative about everything all the time, especially things made for entertainment.

    I first heard of this game when TheSpoonyOne reviewed it, and me made me think it was this long boring slog with these random ineffectual characters, when actually it's kind of the exact opposite, and is filled with these long elaborate setpieces and compared to other square rpg's has really rock solid pacing. It has this great mastery of camp comedy, but when it needs to be serious, It tries to put the effort in. I never actually played it tho, I'm much more of a Chrono Trigger, no random encounter kind of gal, but my friend in high-school Austin loved the game. It's a great and fun game to watch.

And this retrospective of the game makes me want to give the game a go. It is a great way to look upon the game, explaining it to those that never played it and veterans alike.

  • @cartooncritic7045
    @cartooncritic7045 6 лет назад +17

    I used to be part of the crowd that didn't like this game, and it was because the first (and for a while, only) time I played it was back in the PS2 days when I was a wee lad who was very new to RPGs and lived in a religious household. I thought the combat was boring, I didn't like a lot of the characters, and I quit playing the game when I got to the part where we saw Seymour resurrected because it went against everything I had understood/believed at that point. As time passed, I became acutely aware of how polarizing the game was among classic FF fans and learned through RUclips videos about the "Tidus never existed" twist, and for the better part of fifteen years I always felt like I made the right choice to stop even as I became less religious the older I got.
    Then, about this time last year, I finally cracked down and decided to give the PS4 remaster a shot, as I decided that I was being unfair with the game for that long of a time, and by then I had become a huge fan of the FF series. That playthrough made me change my opinion of FFX pretty damn hard, and while I still wouldn't call FFX one of my favorites in the series (you cannot convince me that the Tidus twist isn't just a cheap narrative shot just to have a pointlessly tragic ending), but FFX went from one of my least favorites in the series to Top 10 of the whole franchise material, spin-offs and all.
    I really do need to thank Clement for setting things straight with Tidus' character, by the way, because having played the game recently, I immediately realized how overhated he was and how much a lot of modern gamers completely misunderstood him and his voice acting. It's almost like playing FFVII and realizing that Cloud is NOT in fact a broody, selfish loner. On the flipside, it also made me realize how many of the main characters (namely basically everyone save for Tidus, Yuna, and Auron) have little impact on the main narrative: they all had their character development arcs, sure, but can anyone remember a point in the game when Kimahri was hugely consequential to the main story because of his development? Lulu arguably had it worse, as her backstory and motivation is revealed in an optional mini-dungeon where Yojimbo rests, and she only really exists in the main story as an extra source for exposition and to lazily pair her off with Wakka in the sequel. This is why I don't necessarily love this game yet, even if I'm generally more positive on it than I used to be.

    • @cartooncritic7045
      @cartooncritic7045 6 лет назад

      Nahid A I don't necessarily mean in the way of professional critics, more so to fans themselves. I've seen quite a number of people use their (unfair) disdain for Tidus to color their opinion on the game itself. There's also just people who don't like FFX's story.

    • @SBaby

    It has been amazing to look back on what I consider to be the greatest franchise of all time (and I'm personally including films as well).
    Like yourself, these games saw me through some long weekends, back when I was a live-in carer for my dad. I would stay up till my eyes were stinging on FFX. Loved it.
    I have been doing reviews myself lately and that is what led me to your videos, and you have really shed some light on parts of the series I wasn't so familiar with, like FFVI, which I still haven't played all the way through.
    Anyway (cause I'm in danger of rambling) FFVII, in my opinion, is not only my fav FF; I think it is the greatest game ever made. And FFX is my second fav.
    In your experience, would you recommend the Android app of FFVI, or should I buy the PSX version, as I really feel I should play it?
    Thanks again, man. :)

    Great video clement.
    I really love FF10 though Tidus isn't my most favourite protagonist I still like the character because of how well he goes with Yuna. These two characters come from two different walks of life. Tidus is trying to keep his shit together after hearing about sin is his father, he's struggling to fit in Spira with the group, (probably the shitty Besaid blitzball team was pissing him off to.). Yuna is this sweet, talented summoner/white mage who abides by Yevon's techings like everyone does, she tries to help others and keep spirits up.
    But when something goes wrong either one is always there for each other to support each other and their friends do a good job to. I really love the laugh scene I knew it was intentional to cheer each other up heck even tidus in voice and mocap was like in his head "Oh man I have to try to be as positive as possible so let's all laugh my troubles away" then Yuna joins in and these two characters just try so hard not to bring out an embaressed laugh then you see the other guys like "wtf are these guys doing? I'm this close to leaving this team now.". Then Yuna is like "Yeah we should stop doing this now".
    Later scenes in the game Yuna and everyone else starts to see how corrupt Yevon is, alot of things that people were taught were complete bullshit and as the game goes on you see Yuna starting to get more sad, and now her, everyone else are fugitives, She still wants to keep going but with all the shit she had to deal with becomes too much and seeing the romance FMV was so amazing and tear jerking to me.
    I really love Yuna and Tidus in this game. I can tolerate Tidus being a whiny brat and annoying show off but he is still a nice guy, at least he isn't constantly miserable like freaking Squall. Also seeing Tidus support not just Yuna but other characters really makes him more likeable I think this main protagonist cares more about his team mates than any other main protagonist but with a kind heart (even though he cries like a bitch. seriously man you're a grown ass man. Stop crying.)

    Anima being a "she" makes her even more metal.

      Never, and i mean never, underestimate the Power of the Love a (good) mother has for their children. Anima's aeon is essentially that, all her Love for her turned into Power so he will be safe. The fact It looks monstrous is just a byproduct of that

    YES. FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS MY FEELINGS FOR THAT FIRST BLITZBALL MATCH! Worst first impressions to a minigame in any game, IMO. It usually killed my enthusiasm for FFX in my attempts to play the game @_@

      I got good enough at this that I can consistantly win that first match in Luca. I want that attack sphere so I can boost Yunas attack and by extension make here Aeons hit even harder. It seems imposebile at first but its actully a fun match with the right stradegy. Its also really satisfaying to own the Goers and see Wakka with that crystal trophy.
      On my last playthrough I won with a 3:2 score. Datt, Tidus and Wakka all scored a goal.
      Its like looking back at a tough boss that kicked my ass in the past but is now easy.

    I was 12 when I first played this game. The Yuna dying twist blindsided me. I remember pausing the game and cried as I digested what I had just heard.

    I loooove FFX,it's my 4th favorite Final Fantasy game after 7,9 and 6. The story is incredible,I love the characters(Tidus included),I love the battle system,the soundtrack and I really don't mind the linearity here(unlike in FFXIII that barely feels like a game at all),I love everything about the game.
    Oh and I hate how the Internet destroys the Tidus laughing scene,it's such a beautiful scene,if people actually PLAYED the game they'd understand how charming it is.

    Thank you so much! Finally someone who actually followed the story up to the point of the “famous laugh”. I like Spoony but I never understood why he bashed so much on that moment and I thought it was just to make more views...

    I know that in English pronouncing his name as "Tie-dus" is reasonable, and I know Clement mentioned this too, but his name is based off the Okinawan word for Sun, romanized in English as "Tiida", (pronounced "Tee-duh"). Just as Yuna's name is based off the Okinawan word for Night.
    I don't blame anyone for calling him "Tie-dus", especially considering the theme of his design, but that is still technically incorrect and it just bugs me. I mean, even Clement said "His name SHOULD be pronounced 'Tie-dus'." I took that as him acknowledging that he knows that he pronounces it incorrectly. I know it's completely superfluous, it's just a game, it's not like I'm losing sleep over something this dumb, it's just a pet peeve I guess

    What another great retrospective I really enjoy these. I'm exited for when you get to the 13 trilogy because currently playing the games I'm on 13-2 doing alittle grinding so I can be prepared for the final boss. Also I'm excited to see how you talk about the DLC content of 13-2 and Lightning Returns

    i went for a ride through this video - i was always unsure about getting this game, but the first half of this won me over, next i became hesitant due to the flaws showcased, after that i became more intrigued with it's story and gameplay and less hesitant, and now you've convinced me to get this someday, maybe for the switch. (hopefully they'll have fixed said flaws at least somewhat) i'm thoroughly enjoying these videos, you've put a lot of work into them^^

    Gonna have to disagree about the final battle. You mirrored my thoughts on this game so much except for this, and not really caring for the twist about Tidus.
    The Yu Yevon fight is lame, but the aeon fights are fantastic. First off, not being able to die is just so that you won't get a game over and have to fight Jecht again if you get wiped by your aeons, which are as powerful as they really are, they don't have stats specific to this fight but have the stats they had right before it. It's meant to be unloseable so the momentum of the moment isn't lost. It's supposed to FEEL like a long and grueling battle, without being actually loseable so that the feeling of the climax isn't replaced with "well shit I gotta do that again". Making you watch the animations play out is because you're meant to really feel it, this is the LAST time you'll ever get to see them, so enjoy it while you can. You have to kill every single one of these companions you've not only bonded with, but worked hard to build up and strengthen. You may as well be killing the main party. Also, each one has a little line for you in the monster info box, like Anima's "Thus, I atone.".
    Yu Yevon being so easy is kind of a let down, he dies so quick, but I guess there is some satisfaction to be had in killing a final boss in one move.
